It's Easter 1993, and the gang is going to Las Vegas for Angie's surprise wedding. Noah is attempting to recover from a bad bout of the flu--and his disastrous Valentine's Day, and is not all that excited to meet his new relatives: Cotton Preston and his three grown daughters. They're staying at Lucky Days casino, a hotel with notorious mob connections... and family connections. It's only then that Noah and his friends realize his future step-father might just be a mob lawyer. Things get worse from there with a mysterious appearing (and disappearing) suitcase full of cash, an aunt who's not an aunt, a crazed redhead and... Wilma Wanderly.

The only thing I can complain about is the wait for the next book. I absolutely love this series and this book did not disappoint.

I am a very slow reader normally, but I was at home all day today nursing a back injury and I ended up reading Cash Out from start to finish in one day! I am very excited to report Noah and the gang solved another murder. This time they went on the road to Las Vegas for Noah's mother's wedding. Lots of fun, mayhem, intrigue, suspense, and crime solving. And kudos to author Marshall Thornton for adding Louise Hay and Shakti Gawain into the mix. It's details like those two ladies which makes the Pinx Video Mysteries historically accurate and authentic.

My only hope is that Thornton eventually writes a story where Noah gives in, sharing his fears with Javier who accepts Noah's HIV status as they embark on a genuine love affair. I know that's asking a lot - because sexual tension and unrequited love can keep the suspense bubbling, but Noah deserves to end up with someone fantastic. Plus there's lots of sero-discordant couples who survived together.

Meanwhile, Cash out was lots of fun. Pinx Video Mystery is my current favorite cozy.

I usually plow through Mr Thornton's books in one or two sittings but for some inexplicable reason, this one I kept putting down and picking up again (repeatedly). Perhaps it's because Noah and Javier have fallen out 'Big Time' in the last book and we get two grumpy cameos from the latter in this book. Perhaps it's because the gang have de-camped to Las Vegas to witness Noah's mother (Angie) get suddenly hitched to a new man in her life ... I miss all the video shop dramas actually.

The notorious Wilma Wanderley gets a couple of 'memorable scenes' but stays mostly out of the picture as the plotted murder has nothing to do with her (this time)! And of course unexpected death and bodies coincidentally materialize around poor Noah, but at least we're spared a gruesome repeat of the previous book's opening chapter.

Don't get me wrong - there are many suspects, motives, red-herrings - but this plot just didn't draw me into the drama. I remained emotionally distant and non-invested throughout - hence the 3 star rating. Actually I lie ... the secondary character Leon annoyed me so much I wanted to smack him repeatedly.

Marshall Thornton releases his latest Pinx Video Mystery, Cash Out, this Christmas and it is just as marvelous as the past stories. Be forewarned, if you have not read the other books in this series, this review may contain a few spoilers. With the whole gang back together and invited to Angie’s wedding, things are sure to get crazy and they do. Noah hasn’t even met his future stepfather, Cotton, or his family. The only thing he knows after being introduced is that Cotton’s son-in-law, Sonny, works for a law firm that deals with the mob back in Chicago and that is never a good thing. Events unfold very quickly in this novel, and from the arrival of a former best friend of his mom’s, Aunt Katie, to a mysterious redheaded woman who warns Noah not to “let it happen,” whatever that might be, all is not right in Vegas. When a murderer strikes and Noah’s mom, Angie, is a key suspect, Noah turns to the one man who might be able to help—if he even takes his call, that is.

Another excellent installment. I was a bit leery going in due to the whole Vegas/mob angle, which is always a turn off for me, but it was fun. I am starting to feel bad for Javier though.

I have no idea what I'll read next now that I've finished this series. It's been a while since anything else has managed to hold my attention.

RATING WITHHELD UNTIL A NEW ‘FINAL VOLUME’ IS PUBLISHED

If forced to rate Marshall Thornton ’s Cash Out, the fifth volume of the 'Pinx Video Mystery' series, I would be hard pressed to offer more than 2.25 Exceedingly Disappointed Stars.

It’s almost as if another author had been hired to ghost write Cash Out.

Unlike the first three volumes of the series, and to a lesser extent the fourth, this fifth volume was frustrating and boring. There were far too many characters, far too much repetition, and by the time the overly convoluted mystery was solved this reader had lost all interest.

The title appears to have come from the one very bad ‘cash out’ experience of a Pinx Video temp hire, Patty Wong, during the time that Noah Valentine, the owner of the store, had gone to Las Vegas to attend his mother’s Easter time wedding. An exorbitant amount of money was missing the one night that Patty closed - and yet there was never an explanation provided as to why that was important to the novel or even what followup occurred as a result.

The wonderful humor that characterized the earlier volumes of the series is essentially gone. And even Noah, who always tried to keep the handsome LAPD Homicide Detective Javier O’Shea at a distance for a personal reason (an unnecessary reason as it turns out) has suddenly cut Javier off - except when he needs his help. When Javier does help, Noah has to be prodded to say ‘thank you.’ All of this is completely out of character for each of these men.

Cash Out was published in 2020. I sincerely hope Thornton intends to write at least one more volume in this series to rectify the mistakes of this one, and to provide the HEA ending for Noah and Javier that all of his readers want.

The Pinx Video Mystery series cries out for a much better conclusion - reverting to the wonderful fun-filled books of murder, mystery, and mayhem combined with great humor and clever plot twists that characterized the earlier works.

This is such a great series and I enjoyed being in this world again. The crew goes to Las Vegas for Noah’s mother’s wedding and while there get tangled up in a murder. There seems to be no surprise to everyone that there’s another dead body while Noah is around. The guy can’t catch a break but at least he wasn’t to blame this time. He just has to make sure his mother isn’t blamed.

I really love the antics that these characters get up to. This series has such a great way of combining mystery and humor. It’s like visiting with old friends in every book. It was was a nice change to get them out of Los Angeles. I thought I’d miss Javier and any type of relationship angst but we get a glimpse of Javier and he’s still angry at Noah. I do hope things can work out with them and that we will see more of him in the future.

I don’t know what is in store for Noah and his friends next but I am looking forward to more from them!

4 stars!

I just figured it out... the books in this series are like TV series episodes. I think we wont see Noah having a proper romancing until the author is good and ready for this series to end.

Seeing as how much I’m enjoying this series. Without any romance at all, I’d say I’m good with this plan 😆

After reading this fifth book in the series, I realize that I really don't particularly care about the murders, entertaining as they may be. I just want Noah to have a happy life, find a good man, continue regular drinks and dinner with Marc, Louis and Leon, see his mom Angie more often, find a good medical cocktail .... annnnd ... Javier being part of that mix would be a bonus.

That's not to say that this book wasn't entertaining (and Angie definitely needs to find a good man worthy of her as well!) and I hope the gang will continue to haphazardly solve murders along the way. 4 stars for "Cash Out" and anxiously awaiting the next installment.

Viva Las Vegas, the boys are back and on their way to Angie’s wedding. Noah is not happy with idea of his mom getting married, and definitely not happy on his new step family with mob connections. And to top everything off, his mom gets framed for murder. I always love the Louis recipes given at the end. The Shit-Faced Fruit Salad is a hoot! Perfect for making in your Vegas hotel room.

I liked this a lot more than the Vegas book in the Boystown series (Lucky Days) – it helped that Noah’s whole crew was there. And I appreciated that the callbacks to Lucky Days were integrated into the plot. The mystery in this book wasn’t quite as engaging as some of the others, though, and I wish we’d gotten to know Cotton’s family better because it would have helped with assessing how much to suspect them.

Well the whole crew's off to Vegas for Noah's mother's wedding. A wedding where Noah's never even met the groom or his daughters. Suffice to say Noah's got a bad feelings about things, but he's there to support his mother if this is what will make her happy. But a suitcase of cash showing up and the groom's son-in-law taking a nose dive off the twentieth floor balcony has all the boys deciding the need to figure out exactly what's going on pronto. Especially when it looks like someone's trying to set Noah's mom up for the murder.

In some ways this story felt a little more absurd than the previous book as Noah and his friends are out of their element and in Las Vegas instead of back home in LA. But still it was entertaining and I enjoy watching them run around trying to figure out all the details. I do hope we get a little more romance in the next story. I know this series is really more about the mysteries and the friendships than about a certain tempting cop, but I want more Javier next time. :)

Well, this was the best mystery of the whole series. It was complex and quite dark and yet had lots of funny moments.

And I love that Wilma Wanderley is there *laughs* And Louise Hay and Shakti Gawain are also there. Yeah, I adore how those little details made the story more historically accurate :D

Poor Noah, still recovering from his last adventure and pesky flu, has to face his new in-law family at his mother's surprising wedding... in Las Vegas! Luckily, all his friends are there because, of course, there is a murder and he'll need the help :P

And yes, I get that many will be disappointed by the lack of resolution on Noah and Javier's story, but I'm okay with it. The end of the previous book pointed to that, so... yeah, I'm sad for them but it fits the story.

No romance in this episode at all. Thought I was reading a farce or a Benny Hill story with all the room in and outs. I definitely didn't enjoy this one as much as Night Drop. Just glad it was on KU.

Another great installment. Highly recommend the series. No romance, all about the mystery and it was fun! I am so looking forward to the next. And it's always fun to read about things from the past as if they are the latest and greatest, which they were in the time period this is based in.

Love this series. Pretty much zero romance in this one but I love the mystery and all our characters and their idiosyncrasies. Hopefully we see Javier and Noah finally sort themselves out in the next book.

Narrated by Jack Meloche - excellent.

Cash Out (Pinx Video 5)
By Marshall Thornton
Kenmore Books, 2020
Five stars

I continue to really love this series, and particularly as a counterpoint to Thornton’s 1980s noir detective series set in Chicago against the backdrop of the emergence of AIDS. The Pinx Video books are a decade later in history, the early 1990s, and have a sort of uncanny atmosphere of sitcom-noir. The books are droll, for sure, enlivened with a snarky humor that comes from the central character--Noah Valentine—but is shared with his coterie of petit-bourgeois Los Angeles friends. These are ordinary Angelenos trying to live their lives and have some fun in one of the strangest cities on earth. That fact that Noah is HIV positive and is taking AZT adds a specific historical poignancy to the mildly madcap plotlines. It’s sort of like “I Love Lucy,” if Lucy was secretly battling ovarian cancer.

Noah and his friends get out of town for this episode, with Leon, Louis, Marc, and Tina joining him on a road trip to Las Vegas for—of all things—Noah’s mother’s wedding to a vaguely mysterious lawyer from Grand Rapids by the name of Preston Cotton. Noah is disturbed by many aspects of this adventure, and his worries only get bigger when they arrive at the fictional casino hotel, their stays fully comped by the bridegroom’s lawyer son-in-law, Sonny Leone.

Noah is worried about his mother, even more than he’s worried about his health. The typically self-obsessed twenty-eight-year-old is beginning to understand how much his mother means to him—especially since his friends all think she’s great (having had some adventures with her in the last book). The idea of losing his mother to this other, unfamiliar family really haunts him. Marc and Louis play his avuncular fairy godfathers, taking care of him in little ways that he both takes for granted and privately cherishes. Leon and Tina are more his peers, low-level professionals who desperately try to pretend that living in LA is fun if you’re not rich and powerful. It all feels so very spot-on, and this crew works so well together, that it’s a pleasure just to watch them interact.

Ultimately, the mystery at the center of the plotline isn’t as important as the relationships among all the various people in the cast. Noah is not, perhaps, a very special person, but we love him because he feels so familiar and so, well, plausible. He’s a young man whose trajectory in life has been derailed by a disease that may or may not be under control. He’s just trying to live, not quite sure if he deserves to be happy (as a brief cameo by former not-quite-boyfriend Javier O’Shea shows).

In the end, I don’t care about the perpetrator or the crime. I want Noah to be happy. Marshall Thornton is too good a writer to have made me feel this way by accident. I will read every future installment of the Pinx Video series, just because I want to see how Noah’s doing. It’s sort of the way I felt about Nick Nowak in the Boys Town books.

I just love Noah :Q__

The best part of this book to me was the Boystown's references (low key was waiting for Nick to pop up lol)
Mickey and Gary... I remember something about them when Nick went to LA but unfortunately at this point don't remember the details.

As for Noah, I feel like his narrative was funnier than before XD And he is still the cutest character Q.Q

I don't like Leon but he is a great comedic relief. Other characters are also engaging and interesting in this book. Although I do miss Noah's 'flirting' with a certain tall dark and etc lol

Anyways, this series is my favorite from this author. Hope it won't be long till the next book.

I still love the writing and the characters and the mysteries, but after five books I'm getting frustrated by the lack of progress on the romance with Javier. I was okay with books #1 and #2 establishing a slow burn romance that was secondary to the mystery. And in #3 and #4 we made some breakthroughs, even if it was less than I hoped. Here we only get two phone calls between N/J, and they're case-related. I think I might be done with this series, not because it's bad, but because I am ultimately here for at least a little romance.

Road trip! The Scooby gang of amateur sleuths are in Las Vegas for Noah's mom's wedding. Conveniently, there's a murder for them to solve, not that the local police, the hotel staff, or the suspects appreciate their efforts. LA cop Javier makes a couple appearances by phone, and he's grumpy, probably because Noah's been avoiding him.
I enjoyed the interplay between characters. The mystery had me totally baffled, as usual. I could swear that some of the extras were from the Boystown series. After all, there is a Chicago connection in this book.

If you haven’t read any part of this series, you need to read the other books first. They REALLY need to be read in order or there are a LOT of things you will miss out on.
Of course, it never fails to crack me up that Noah and his friends find trouble no matter where they go. You’d think by leaving LA to go to a wedding in Las Vegas, would keep them out of trouble. But nope. They are in up to their eyeballs again. And it’s more personal this time. Because this time, they are trying to frame Noah’s mom. And that doesn’t fly. Of course, Noah and his friends are determined to find the clues to fix this, but it’s not as easy as it seems.
If you haven’t read the other books, there are also things about Noah you are missing out on. Now I can’t tell, because it will give too much away, but after everything that has happened in this book, I love Noah’s mom more than ever now. I loved her to pieces in the last books, because that woman is a hoot. Truly. But she did something in this one that just…...made the book for me. I loved the book anyway. I love the mystery and the intrigue. Finding the clues and figuring out who did it. And it’s all funny to read in the process because Noah and his friends are pistols. They are so hilarious at times. It just makes the mystery that much better. Doesn’t mean it always ends well or turns out that great for Noah most times, but it’s still a blast to read.
This series has just been another one of those that you can’t put down. Once you start getting into it, you can’t stop. You never know what one of them are going to do, or what’s going to happen next. If the murderer is going to strike again, or if Noah and them go too far. It’s just a well put together set of books and this one just adds more to it. It’s been a joy to read and I’m hoping there are more in the future. I really love Noah. And what Angie did for him in this…..yeah, I really hope to see more of them in the future.
