In the end she decided to take a chance and quit the day job to find out if she could achieve success as an author. However, she couldn't have done it without her husband's unstinting support. Fortunately the gamble paid off. It has been a long haul, with plenty of financially lean periods, but it was well worth the effort. There is nothing quite like the buzz that comes with that phone call to say a publisher wants to buy your book.
Along the way She has been fortunate to have the support and encouragement of a strong and successful writers’ group. Not only has she appreciated the friendship of its members, but has also found their critical insight and feedback invaluable. So too is the support of her editor at Harlequin. With endless patience she steered her through the revisions of the first book and saved her from herself on numerous occasions. Being able to see the resulting improvement made the work enjoyable and rewarding.
As Joanna has always had a passion for Literature and History it ihas been no hardship to do the necessary research for her books. Initially her main interests were the Enlightenment and the Regency, but in recent years she have developed a fascination for the early Medieval period as well. Researching these different eras is exciting because there is always something new to be discovered. Invariably though she ends up with far more material than she can use so it's a matter of deciding what must be left out. Historical detail must never hold up the story. Joanna always has a rough plan in her head, a general idea of where the story is going, although the characters invariably take on a life of their own. They have no qualms about departing from the script and taking her down another path. It's fun to go with them and see where it leads. Frequently their way turns out to be better than her own so she’s learned to listen to them now.
When it comes to the historical background for a new story, Joanna always chooses events in which she has a keen interest, and which involve a serious conflict of some kind. The central love story is juxtaposed with this and gives the characters more obstacles to overcome. The Great Viking Invasion was fertile ground, as were the Luddite Rebellion and the Harrying of the North which provided the settings for her second and third books respectively. The Peninsular War is the background for His Counterfeit Condesa, and for its companion novel, The Caged Countess. This conflict was also the background to Redemption of a Fallen Woman which is Joanna’s contribution to the Castonbury Park series.

This was a nice medieval story.

Solo puedo decir que terrible ser mujer en esa época. No tenían decisión alguna sobre su vida, futuro y su propio cuerpo. Cualquier problema en el matrimonio siempre era culpa de la mujer y no valía nada si no podía tener hijos.
Isabelle quedó viuda apenas un año después de casarse. Su marido era un maltratador, impotente. Y los suegros cabrones, prácticamente la echaron a la calle con lo puesto. Fue devuelta a la casa de su padre, sin la dote, por no haber engendrado un heredero. Las posibilidades de volver a casarse con un buen marido eran casi nulas. Entonces su padre arregla un compromiso con uno de sus aliados de Glengarron.
Lord Ban lo perdió todo ante el rey normando cuando conquistó Northumbria. Es un guerrero sin tierras. Su hermana está casada con el Laird de Glengarron y lo envían a Castlemora para conseguir esposa. En el pasado no habría sido un buen partido, pero ahora es la mejor alternativa.
Como Isabelle no tuvo hijos, está en duda su fertilidad. Llegan a un acuerdo con el padre, de mantener el compromiso en secreto hasta asegurarse de engendrar un heredero antes del matrimonio. Por supuesto, a ella ni le preguntaron su opinión.
Para Lady Isabelle esto es denigrante, pero se da cuenta de que no tiene otra opción. Está entre la espada y la pared, porque el maestro de armas de su padre le ha dicho que pretende tenerla a toda costa. Murdo es un hombre malvado, que ha ido adquiriendo bastante poder con los años. Es un peligro latente, porque su padre ya está viejo y su hermano todavía es joven.
Por lo menos Ban no es un bruto, considerando el machismo y la barbarie de la época. Necesita una esposa y espera encontrar alguien dócil y de aspecto agradable. Su experiencia en el amor ha sido mala y espera que su matrimonio sea un arreglo de negocios. El amor hace vulnerable a un hombre. Pero se asegura de tratar bien a Isabelle y es considerado con ella. Su primer encuentro en el lago no fue el mejor, pero ahora la trata con más respeto.
Murdo es un enemigo despreciable, que da pelea a lo largo de la historia. No le gustó nada la llegada de Ban, porque arruina todos sus planes de casarse con Isabelle y ser el dueño de Castlemora.
Frase que odio con fuerza nuclear: "Soy tu marido y me obedecerás." (arcadas)
En fin. Es una historia típica de como dos personas superan sus experiencias terribles del pasado y logran encontrar el amor y la felicidad.

Puedo decir que es el primer Harlequin que leo que no me ha llegado a hastiar. No soy una experta en Harlequin de contenido histórico, así que mi critica no va a hacer referencia a ello. No tenía gran expectativa con el libro; pero me ha llegado a entretener y me he creído la historia de Lord Ban e Isabelle, en especial porque, aunque él no es un romántico empedernido, dada la época y la condición de Isabelle luego de quedar viuda, no la fuerza (en nombre del amor o de su honra masculina, como generalmente hacen hasta en novelas contemporáneas) y es hasta cuidadoso con ella.
Un poco aburrido el tema del complot de Murdo para hacerse de Castlemora, pudieron sacarle más sustancia al personaje antagonista, y no solo ponerlo como un tipo obsesionado con Isabelle... pero en líneas generales, el libro (No se dejen guiar por el título xD) está para pasar el rato sin rabiar (más de lo necesario) en el proceso.

So. I can’t believe I worked on reading this book for a month. The plot was seriously lacking, the characters were completely underdeveloped, and I was just bored. Completely bored. Sure, I didn’t go into reading a Harlequin novel looking for something awesome, but something easy to read, mindless. I also am 💯 sure they didn’t say “Penny for your thought” in medieval Scotland....wait... was this even in Scotland??? I don’t even know!

Now widowed, Lady Isabelle is forced to return to her father minus her dowry. Penniless and widowed, her prospects don't look good. However, her father the Laird of Castlemora, has decided that she should wed the infamous Lord Ban who has lost everything to the Norman king when he conquered Northumbria. Because Lady Isabelle never gave birth, Lord Ban decrees a secret betrothal to ensure that he will have an heir on the way before marriage! Lady Isabelle seethes at this but realizes she has no other option as Castlemora's master-at-arms, Murdo, has made clear his intention to have her any way possible. An evil man, Murdo seizes power upon her father's death and kills Hugo, her brother. Now Ban and Isabelle are forced to flee for their lives and try to reach Glengarron, Ban's home, and safety. What follows is a story of treachery and love found just in time.
I really liked this story. Every time the reader thought the story was going one way, it went another. Murdo was an evil presence throughout the story. The secondary characters were believable and the settings were true to the period.

Encore une fois, l'auteur m'aura fait passer un agréable moment de lecture. Ce n'est que le troisième roman Joanna Fulford que je lis, mais à chaque fois, elle arrive a me faire ressentir tout un tas d'émotions. Je suis passée par l'indignation, puis la colère, la peur, la tristesse et la joie. Autant dire que niveau émotions c'était les montagnes russes pour moi.
J'ai pris plaisir à suivre l'histoire d'Isabelle et de Ban (pourquoi je pense au personnage de get backers, mystère). Deux personnages au passé cabossé et rêvant d'un avenir meilleur. Je me suis très rapidement attachée à eux et ai plus d'une fois râler devant les évènements qui les mettaient en danger. Car, il faut le souligner, jamais un méchant ne m'a paru aussi ignoble et il fut fort dommage que je ne puisse pas aller dans cet univers pour lui apprendre les bonnes manières et pour lui faire la peau. J'ai dû ronger mon frein tout au long du récit et subir en spectatrice les atrocités et les moments plus joyeux.
Pour finir, ce livre m'aura une fois de plus confortée que l'auteur rejoint mes chouchous en roman historique. L'histoire est bien mené et je l'ai littéralement dévoré en à peine une journée.

Set in the years immediately following the Norman Conquest, this novel tells the story of a young, impoverished Scottish widow, Isabelle, and a - in true Harlequin style - handsome, virile English lord, whose lands have been laid to waste by the Normans. Their betrothal, or hand-fasting (common at that time) was a matter of convenience until it could be proved that Isabelle was not barren as had been claimed. Thanks to the murderous vassal of her father, appropriately called Murdo, the two are forced to feel for their lives. Many trials and tribulations followed before they can acknowledge that they truly love each other. Although this is a formulaic Mills & Boon Harlequin, Joanna Fulford imbues her characters with warmth, charm and believability and there's action enough for anyone.

Ha sido una historia bastante entretenida. En un principio la creí muy predecible pero en parte me equivoqué. La autora sale crear tempestad cuando el mar está demasiado en calma y eso se agradece, una historia plana y que justo al final sea una montaña rusa me da rabia. De los protagonistas no hay mucho que destacar, pero si me alegro que Isabelle fuese la típica llorona.
Lo que más me gustó, algún que otro giro de la historia.

No me gusto mucho que digamos, todo se centraba mucho en el tema de infertilidad y en que si no podías tener hijos no eras suficiente mujer por lo que el protagonista masculino vikingo se debatía entre su "amor" y el deseo de engendrar un heredero, no la verdad no me gusto nada, aqui en este libro la mujer no valía si no puede tener hijos por lo que es un no rotundo este tipo de libros pesados de terminar.

At the beginning, I really thought I will enjoy this book.
The charaters were good and the plot was different from what I had already read.
But as I have already said on my others reviews, when I find some graphic scene and acts I let down the book instantly.
This is the case with this book. It contains some scene I find too porn to be on a book without at least a warning.
I love to read a beautiful love story, I hate finding those kind of things which add nothing to the story.

J'ai aimé l'esprit chevaleresque de cette histoire. là pauvre héroïne coûtant de sa capacité à avoir des enfants et à plaire aux hommes après un mariage désastreux. J'ai aimé le style et la façon dont le héros , Ban , s'attache à sa jolie fiancée. Isabelle .
