God bless Aaron Day! All of the foods you miss the most on the new-fangled keto diet — rice pudding, muffins, granola, pizza, breaded onion rings, mac ‘n cheese, crunchy chips, tater tots, and bread, actual bread (or near enough) — are all here in his Healthy Keto Air Fryer Cookbook. I’m so glad that I found this cookbook, and you will, too. I couldn’t recommend it more highly, and I’ve read my share of keto cookbooks.

I was kind of disappointed in this book. I was really excited to get an ARC of it since my husband and I have been eating keto for a couple of months and I also have a fairly new air fryer that mostly sits unused. I have a lot of keto books that I've received for review purposes from another publisher, but many of them are of the "100 ways to eat bacon, cheese and butter" variety and I really try to focus on healthy fats and proteins, low carb veggies, more fiber, and foods that deliver a lot of nutrients. I have a subscription to Misfits Market for weekly organic veggie deliveries and I've been ordering lots of keto veggies like daikon radishes, jicama, celery root, collard greens and so on, and I was really hoping for some great recipes to use a bigger variety of keto veggies. Unfortunately, this is more for stuff like scotch eggs (hard boiled eggs wrapped in sausage), which are keto but I wouldn't really call particularly healthy. Shrug. "Healthy" is a very subjective term. I was surprised to see there was a recipe for tofu and he actually knew to press it first to remove excess liquid so it gets a nice texture but he doesn't call for marinading which I would always recommend, as tofu is sort of a blank slate sponge and it soaks up whatever flavors you marinade it in.

The book sometimes calls for ingredients that are very processed that I would prefer not to cook with, like using whey protein powder for breading things like onion rings. I really don't want lab-produced "food" in my cupboard, but I tend towards minimally processed, whole foods and things I can grow, forage or make myself. It probably makes a great breading for folks who just want tasty food, though.

There are not a ton of pictures and the ones there are sometimes seem to be styled for the photos with different ingredients. The cover recipe, for instance, is for steak. It calls for steak, oil, butter, parsley, garlic, and salt and pepper. In the photo, there are yellowish cubes in addition to the garlic. I have no idea what those are and I searched the recipe twice trying to find that ingredient. There also is no parsley shown in the picture, but there appears to be rosemary. Other recipes are shown covered in cilantro leaves when it doesn't call for cilantro and things like that. The sesame seed bread is shown as a lovely round loaf, but it calls for being baked in a low, square pan and then sliced into 12 slices, which would seem to give you really narrow, long slices of bread nothing like the bread pictured. It's a minor thing, but I really like seeing what a recipe will look like when made according to the directions.

There are also quite a few recipes where it really seems like more work to make it in an air fryer, like omelets and pancakes. If you live in a dorm and have no stove top burner, then maybe you'd need to make a pancake in an air fryer and take it out to flip it and such, but I really don't see a need to make a lot of these things in an air fryer. Also, some of the photos did not look appetizing. The New York style cheesecake looked dry and burnt, and the blueberry muffins looked kind of wrinkled and sad, with brown tops. None of the pictures really made me want to try the recipes. Lastly, some of the portion sizes seemed unrealistic, like a cauliflower bake for breakfast where a serving size was a half a cup. Who eats a half a cup of something for breakfast?

It'll still work well for keto people looking for more air fryer recipes and there are some recipes that really seemed like they'd be really tasty and easy. I didn't find a whole lot for my needs, but it's still a nice cookbook with a good variety of recipes.

I read a temporary digital ARC of this book for review.

This cookbook is beautifully presented with very clean and easy-to-use recipes accompanied by a decent amount of photographs. But I have to admit, I had to question whether they really needed to be air fried or were more easily done in the oven (without requiring extra purchases for special/unique fryer machine accoutrements. I also noticed that a couple of recipes did not come out as pictured/didn't match the photographs despite my best attempts.

The book breaks down as follows: The Basics (4 pages of tips on air fryers and the keto diet); Breakfasts; Mains; Sides; Snacks; Desserts; index. Recipes include chorizo breakfast hash, 'breaded' fish, Asian style broccolini and pine nuts, nut-free sesame bread, coconut shrimp, blueberry muffins, etc. Recipes that typically use flour are instead substituted with almond flour, whey Protein powder, or coconut flour; recipes that use potatoes will often be changed to use cauliflower rice instead.

Each recipe is very nicely laid out: large tittle, small description, nutrition information sidebox (calories, fat, carbs, protein, fiber), prep and cook time, serving size, and total amount. The ingredients are listed on the left in bold and italics. Steps are in short, numbered paragraphs. Each recipe has a tip at the bottom for e.g., substitutions, preparation, etc.

When it came time to use the recipes, I found I had to go out and buy several items in order to be able to do the recipes - which meant trying to find storage for these extra items (many of which I already had for an oven). As well, recipes for e.g., beef pretty much started with long marinade times so I quickly realized I needed to prepare the night before.

Many recipes were obvious - air fried whole chicken, for example. Or chicken nuggets. Others such as chicken fillet pizzas or egg cups were a welcome surprise. There are also several variations on the same thing: e.g., chicken wings with blue cheese sauce and then garlic pamesan wings.

There are many photographs - about one every three recipes. It's ironic to me that the colorless tofu-looking garlic-butter steak recipe is on the cover considering it looks very unappetizing and bland. The steak itself was not bad at all

Admittedly, for my tastes, I didn't find the recipes that appealing. But I do have to stress here that it is likely due to my preferences and that I am rather new to the keto lifestyle. The book is professional laid out and the recipes have a decent variety. Reviewed from an advance reader copy provided by the publisher.

Healthy Keto Air Fryer Cookbook is a new tutorial and recipe collection for keto cooks by Aaron Day. Due out 8th Dec 2020 from Penguin Random House on their DK Alpha imprint, it's 160 pages (print version) and will be available in paperback and ebook formats.

The introduction covers the basics of cooking with the air-fryer and essential accessories as well as an intro to the keto lifestyle/diet, including a basic primer on ketosis, macronutrients, tips, ingredients, tools, supplies, how-to. The following chapters include the recipes arranged roughly by category: breakfast, mains, sides, snacks, and desserts.

Ingredient measurements are supplied in American standard measurements with metric equivalents in parentheses (yay!). The nutritional information: fat, carbs, protein, fiber content, etc are listed for the recipes as well as serving sizes. Extra tips or recipe alternatives are listed in the recipes. The recipes themselves are fairly straightforward and are made for the most part with easily sourced ingredients (not all though, sweeteners for example, will likely need to be sourced from specialists). The sweeteners used often include erythritol, so people who have IBS or other inflammatory issues might need to proceed with caution.

The photography is not abundant; about 2/3rds of the recipes are not illustrated, but the photographs which are included are clear and well done. I wish there had been more photographs and serving suggestions, but I do understand that extra photography increases the price of book projects very quickly and I didn't find the lack crippling.

This is a large collection of recipes and even allowing for the fact that some of them are very similar to others in the same category, this will keep keto-cooks going for ages. Many of these can also easily be adapted to non-keto cooking.

Four stars.

This cookbook is unique in that it is written by an individual who has utilized these principles and recipes to lose weight. As explained in the beginning of this cookbook, this author used "keto" eating principles to lose over 140 pounds and keep it off for over 8 years. This cookbook provides delicious and easy to make recipes that will assist one in their keto journey. Each of the 100 recipes have less than 10 net grams of carbs and can be created in less than 30 minutes- a lifesaver for working moms everywhere. This cookbook provides recipes based upon the keto way of eating that are uncomplicated and inexpensive. Recipes are provided in each of the following topics: breakfast, soups and salads, snacks, breads and pizza, sides, main dishes, drinks, and desserts. This cookbook provides recipes to meet all needs within a household, including picky eaters. I highly recommend this cookbook. Not only are the recipes delicious and easy to make, they are also provided with designations in the cookbook such as: a "twofer" recipe meaning that you can make extra and use part of it for another meal. Another type of recipe included is "less mess" meaning that you can make the entire recipe in one bowl with minimal cleanup. This cookbook is a realistic, easy to use cookbook with delicious recipes.

This cookbook is a great resource for anyone who wants to combine the convenience of air-fryer cooking with flavorful low-carb meal ideas. The recipes are straightforward and approachable, making them easy to incorporate into everyday cooking without spending too much time in the kitchen. I particularly enjoyed the variety of dishes, which helps keep meals interesting while following a keto-style eating plan. The air-fryer method also adds a convenient touch for busy days when you want something satisfying with minimal preparation and cleanup. With 100 recipes to explore, there are plenty of opportunities to try new flavors and discover fresh meal ideas. Overall, this is a practical and enjoyable cookbook for anyone looking for simple keto-friendly recipes and an easy way to make better use of their air fryer.

Keto recipes for my Air Fryer, perfect!

This cookbook includes the basics of the Keto diet and its benefits and also the benefits of using an air fryer to make healthy Keto food. There are also tips to make using your air fryer easier and less messy. Each recipe includes nutritional information plus tips and suggestions for serving. Most of these recipes are fairly simple to follow with 6 or less steps and several include full color pictures.

There are lots of great recipes in this book, some of my favorites are the chicken fingers, chicken thighs and pumpkin cake.

I received an advanced copy of this book from Netgalley for my honest review.

Really solid cookbook for keto fans that appears to suck a lot of the laborious prep work out of the diet. There's a good balance of recipes and explaining how to maximize both the keto diet and the air fryer itself. Caloric information is clear as well, no tiny text at the end of each recipe here!
