On her fiftieth birthday, Grace uttered a plea to the universe. As the saying goes, ‘be careful what you wish for’...
For the first time in years, traveling nurse Grace Littleton is out of work.
Her on-again off-again boyfriend is with a younger woman, and her only son has just jetted off to Europe.
Alone, unemployed, and unsatisfied, Grace is on a search for something more.
A magical village in the Vermont countryside seems to hold some answers… and a few major problems to boot.
Hypnotized squirrels attacked an elderly gentleman in town.
Who brainwashed the critters?
Then there’s the devilishly handsome bookstore owner who won’t give Grace the time of day.
With her pit bull Lucky at her side, Grace tackles the problems one by one -- not because she wants to, but because she really has no other options.
For Grace, the end of the line is in Covenstead, Vermont.
For fans of paranormal women’s fiction and witch cozy mysteries -- a combination of midlife self-discovery, magic, and murder! "Fun, addictive & easy to follow" -- early reader.
This was a fun and entertaining afternoon read for me. Grace is a protagonist that I can relate to and Covenstead, VT sounds like the kind of place that could provide endless entertainment for those who wish magic was real.
Grace has taken jobs as a traveling nurse, but the agency which has been helping her has no more positions available. She learns of a job in a small Vermont village, and traveling there with her lovable pit bull Lucky, she finds that the town is a magical place inhabited by witches. Someone has just put a dark spell on some squirrels who injured a resident, and Grace is tasked with finding out who could have done it. An entertaining paranormal for relaxing escapist reading.
This brand new series was an incredible read that settled you in the magical town of Covenstead, Vermont. Grace who is a traveling nurse and her dog Lucky celebrated Grace's 50th birthday alone and Grace with for something different for her life. Well Covenstead is the answer to that wish but she can't believe that the town uses magic for most things. There is also a mystery for her to solve. I thought this was a very good book and when it ended I was shocked because I was so into the story I wanted MORE, PLEASE!
This book was unlike any of the other author's books. This is a book in a new series. It was interesting, mysterious, intriguing, suspenseful, gripping and kept you guessing until the end of the book. The book was a page turner... I highly recommend this book and yes I will read it again. I look forward to reading this book in print format sometime in the future. **Please Note** I received a free Digital ARC Of This Book in exchange for my honest review. This is my honest review of the book. I also have bought the print book, read and given my honest review above
This is the first book in the Midlife Medicine series by Amorette Anderson.
This was definitely a cover buy. (I didn’t actually buy it since I subscribed to Kindle Unlimited last week.) But I am so glad I picked it up. This was a fun read. Grace loses her current nursing job and gets a mysterious note to come for a job interview in Covenstead. Turns out everyone is magical in this town and some sort of witch. There are a quite a number of covens here. Grace is given the job of nurse to a doctor who does magical surgery. And her secondary job is that of a sleuth, or the town detective.
This is a 3-book series so far and I hope the author continues with it because I am totally hooked.
Basic premise: Someone is hypnotizing the animals and one of these animals has killed a person. So, as the new town sleuth, Grace must find out who is bewitching the animals and discover who the true killer is.
I love the community here and I enjoy all the magic stuff. The mystery is nice and keeps my attention but it is really the people here who will keep me coming back for more.
Loved so much about it. If you like magical cozy mysteries, definitely check this one out. You won’t be disappointed.
Conceptually cute. I could have used quite a bit more worldbuilding—this is a town that is deeeeeeeeeply up in each other's business (Grace moves in as the new nurse, and everyone says 'great! You'll have to be the town snoop as well, because the previous nurse was!'), and I struggle to believe that the list of approved spells stops at 112; in this book alone we hear of spells for healing, for making food grow to enormous proportions (and what, I ask you, can a single woman do with a crown of broccoli big enough to use as an umbrella?), for repairing slashed car tyres, for enchanting newspapers and handcuffs and bookcases, for reheating food, for 'rehabilitating' baddies...in this book alone we probably see enough spells to account for a tenth of the town's capacity. (I'm also not sure why Grace needs to be a nurse, or whether the doctor is a medical doctor at all: if everyone in town knows the same spells, and knows all of them, then presumably everyone knows the healing spell(s) the doctor uses?)
Grace is...very accepting of everything. She goes in for an interview as a nurse, sees that the clinic doesn't actually practise medicine, goes, 'huh, that's weird, well, whatever', and takes the job (and then is left with a patient who has just had major magical surgery—and for whom she has no clue what to do). At no point does she sign a contract or learn what her salary will be (which would be less notable if she didn't think it an odd omission herself!). Someone casually mentions that eating meat isn't allowed in town, and Grace doesn't even blink or think this odd, though we learn later that she is in fact a meat-eater who doesn't know how to cook vegetarian food. (And folks. As a lifelong vegetarian, I can tell you that people who have spent their whole lives eating meat do not adapt readily to vegetarianism, at least not when it's being imposed from the outside.) She moves into the included housing, discovers that the indoor plumbing is limited to a cold-water pump in the kitchen, and her bathroom—in Vermont—will be an outhouse and a solar camping shower, and she goes, 'oh, okay'. Her dog mutates into her familiar and is able to talk to her, becoming very un-dog-like in the future, and Grace thinks, 'it's more like having a best friend than ever!'
But maybe that's just...Grace. This is a woman, after all, who uses inflatable furniture because she's a travelling nurse and moves a lot—which is a level of quirk that I appreciate—but also has to order new furniture every few weeks because her dog tends to puncture it. Why not put the furniture in a room with a closed door while she's at work? Why not order several sets of inflatable furniture at a time? Why not skip the inflatable furniture altogether and rent furnished flats? But that's not Grace, I suppose.
Amorette Anderson has done it again! She has created the perfect small town; one where I would enjoy living. Covenstead is a quaint, self-sufficient town hidden away in the woods. In fact, one can’t find it unless the manifestation council sends you an invitation!
Grace is ready for a change in her life. She just turned fifty; broke up with her partner; ended a nursing job, and her lease is up on her condo. Her birthday celebration included just her pit, Lucky. Not surprising Grace’s birthday wish was for a change in her life.
As she is loading her last case of belongings into her car, a paper flutters to the sidewalk in front of her. She picks it up to see a job listing for a full time nurse in a nearby place, one she’s never heard of. Not normally spontaneous, Grace nevertheless heads for the town.
Be careful what you wish for! It might just manifest in your life in ways you could never imagine! Visit Covenstead and join the magic.
Covenstead is my dream place. A magical countryside village, hidden away from prying eyes ~ perfection!!
This appeared in my recommended reads on kindle unlimited and as soon as I read the description, I just knew I needed to read the entire series back to back! It was the perfect witchy, cosy mystery I need and I seriously can’t wait to carry on read the next 9 books in this series! I had no doubts, but I am shook at how much I loved this first book and how much I fell in love with Covenstead 🥰
Good mystery in a charming country town with interesting characters
I enjoyed Grace, her dog Lucky, their relationship, and the magical change in their lives. Getting to know them, her boss Dr. Ham, and others in the town is interesting in itself. Throw in the strange mystery that Grace tracks down many clues to decipher, and you'll be wondering how on earth these little pieces fit together. Relaxing fun!
This is the first installment in Amorette Anderson's "Midlife Medicine" series. The main character is Grace Littleton.
On her 50th birthday, Grace blows out the candle on her cupcake and wishes for some positive change in her life. She's divorced, her adult son lives overseas, and she's a traveling nurse. When Grace finds a random flier advertising for a nurse in a town called Covenstead, she packs up her bags and her dog, Lucky, and makes her way to the small town. There, she learns that the populace are all witches, and that she must be one, too, to have answered the Summons.
While Grace is trying to wrap her head around witches and magic, she also finds herself at the center of the mystery involving her lone patient, Earl. He was attacked by hypnotized squirrels, which means there's a Rogue Witch in Covenstead. Grace's predecessor was the town's investigator, and she is now expected to step into that role as well. Grace has no experience investigating crime, but she does love a puzzle, and putting clues together may just be the biggest puzzle of all.
This was cute and fun. I got a good sense of Grace's character, but not so much of the others. I expect that to change as the series goes on. I enjoyed it when Grace learned that Lucky was her familiar and that they can now communicate telepathically. There's a romantic interest, who for once isn't a police officer (hallelujah!), and Grace is making new friends. The story was amusing, but not engrossing. Giving it an average score.
This story was an insult to middle aged women, nurses and dogs. I should know I am a middle aged women who has been a nurse for 35 years and an avid dog lover. It is juvenile in both context and writing style. There is no meat to the story. There is no facts in what a nurse actually does. The lame attempts makes a nurse look like a doctor’s hand-maiden. The characters are one dimensional. The poor excuse of trying to be diverse by saying a character is gay then not sticking to it was insulting. I have read several “cozy” type books. None are riveting reads but this one I had to force myself to finish it was so predictable and just plan bad.
It was a nice enough read, but I couldn't really warm up with the characters. And the (telepathically) talking dog was just not behaving like a dog anymore, more like a sidekick. The case of the attacking squirrels was fun, but I found it was predictable, even the twist was obvious. I don't know yet, if I will read the next book.
Really didn't like this book, not sure why. Took me longer than usual to finish, 3 days, couldn't hold my attention. I love the Hillcrest Witches Mystery. The characters and story caught my attention, loved Turkey.
(FYI I tend to only review one book per series, unless I want to change my scoring by 0.50 or more of a star. -- I tend not to read reviews until after I read a book, so I go in with an open mind.)
[] I quickly didn't care about the MC. --
[] I liked MC's canine companion. --
[] The world building didn't make sense. --
[] The gay character. -- I liked him as that. --
First time read the author's work?: Yes
Will you be reading more?: No
Would you recommend?: No
------------ How I rate Stars: 5* = I loved (must read all I can find by the author) 4* = I really enjoyed (got to read all the series and try other books by the author). 3* = I enjoyed (I will continue to read the series) or 3* = Good book just not my thing (I realised I don't like the genre or picked up a kids book to review in error.)
All of the above scores means I would recommend them! - 2* = it was okay (I might give the next book in the series a try, to see if that was better IMHO.) 1* = Disliked
Note: adding these basic 'reviews' after finding out that some people see the stars differently than I do - hoping this clarifies how I feel about the book. :-)
I liked this book. It was an uncomplicated mystery with magic/paranormal added. I didn't quite buy that Grace was a 50-year-old woman though. She acted more like a woman in her mid-20s early 30s. Not that 50 is considered old these days! ;)
I went back and forth on who the villain was and about halfway through, I guessed it. :) But that didn't make it any less enjoyable. :) (Remember this is the woman who read Stephen King's Salem's Lot from the back to the front because the first part was boring and I wanted to get to the vampires! I have also been known to beg people for spoilers on movies, tv shows, and books). It doesn't lessen my enjoyment to know what happens at the end.
I did expect Grace to start performing magic sooner and I was delighted when her dog actually became her familiar. I wasn't real happy with Dr. Ham as he wasn't much of a teacher or an explainer. The way he was written was perplexing and at first, I thought maybe he had dementia. But he didn't or at least by the end of the book he didn't. :)
This is not an in-depth book and is more for light reading but it's enjoyable, entertaining, and interesting. I will buy a few more in the series and will probably buy the entire series. :)
This was a good book. It had interesting characters, of many kinds of paranormals, and a good story. It was interesting watching Grace start to understand magic. I will definitely read the next one.

” Post-Op and Potions: Midlife Medicine Book 1” by Amorette Anderson is a tale of one Grace Littleton a fifty year old traveling nurse ...her Pit bull Lucky and the magical village of Covenstead, Vermont. At mid-life ...Grace desires a change ...and boy does she get one. Opps...I said TOO MUCH! A delightful NEW series from the highly creative pen of Amorette Anderson. Read and see. Much enjoyed and Highly Recommended. I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Copy of this book.
Amorette Anderson has created the perfect quirky small town in a new series, POST-OP POTIONS. You will find the writing and the characters wonderful with a fun the plot.
Grace just turned fifty and her birthday party included her dog Lucky and the birthday girl. She has no boyfriend, no place to live and no job prospects. Her birthday wish asked for a change in her life. Boy did she get a change.
Get ready for some fun. A medical clinic that doesn't seem to have patient protocols and patients seem to magically heal practically overnight.
I did receive an advance readers copy from the author and the above is my freely given and honest review
This is the start of another wonderfully-fun series by the author of the Hillcrest Witches series. Grace is an out-of-work travelling nurse who sends a message out to the universe for something different. And, boy does she get it. She gets an "invitation" to a job in a small town in Vermont and she decides it's worth a shot. But, things aren't always what they seem to be. When an elderly man is attacked by squirrels, several people say they were hypnotized. Then, all sorts of other strange things happen. It will be up to Grace to figure out who's behind them. But, will she be able to and come out alive?
I have simply love this book, being a woman divorced mother of two grown young men, it really wowed me especially since that little girl part of me still exists that believes in magic Santa Claus Jesus loves us all etc. I recommend this read to anyone in their mid twenties late 40s and up but my question to the author is when when when is the next book? Please don't keep us waiting too long and please let me know when the next one's due to come out I'm not very patient person I am sorry for that but I'm not sorry for my eagerness to reach your next book in this series. Thank you Ms Anderson
After finding nursing jobs were scarce, Grace picks up a job notice off the ground and heads out with her pitbull. Things get strange from following the directions to the town to the greeting from the natives. They new she was coming, but she hadn’t called ahead! A different witch tale where you learn to be a witch after you arrive and there is no rush to explain your role in the community. It is very mysterious and holds surprises throughout the story. I was entertained and draw to this different presentation of supernatural detective work.
This first book in the Midlife Medicine series presents a little village to die for, highly likable secondary characters, a "familiar" that will constantly put a smile on your face and melt your heart and a simple but charming magic system. The main character is a bit off for me, too naive for her age for some reason, and this first mystery is quite simple and not difficult to figure out, but, with everything already quite fleshed out, there is a lot on the plate for a first book. I'm already eyeing the second in my the pile!
This story is intriguing, warmed my heart, and made me smile. All perfect earmarks of a wonderful story, one that will stay with you for a very long time. The characters are so real and witty. The animals add a living note to the story. "What's your third favorite thing?" " You. " oh you nust read this delightful story to see what I mean. Very well done, Amorette. Love this new series so much!
I'd give it a 6th star if it was available. Nice to have a heroine who's not a teeny bopper! Loved Grace, and Lucy her Pittie. The whole idea of ending up in this here to for unheard of town, and having Grace come to terms with otherwordly happenings was great. The plot winds back and forth and sideways, with mysterious happenings along the way. Nice little mystery. Unusual cast of characters. Read it! You'll love it.
Some times you just have to make a change in your life and try something new. Just pack up and head out to an unknown future. Start over and see what happens.... It may be the best thing you've ever done. Grab your dog and jump in your car and take your chances. That's what Grace and her dog did. She ended up in a quaint little town and got the surprise of her life. Enjoy!
I enjoyed this story though it may seem rather silly to some people. I think it is comical how Grace, who is out of a job, suddenly gets offered a job that doesn't require her nursing skills. She has to learn how to be a detective & how to solve the mystery of the nutty squirrels & a bear that also goes nuts.
This was different, I'll give it that. There are several bits of the worldbuilding that could use some explaining or justification, and some more depth of characterisation would be nice, but I am intrigued by the idea of investigation being understood as part of her new role and how that changes up the dynamics. Not thrilled with the bait and switch with the (not actually) gay character, but I saw it coming.
A genuine pleasure to read I tore through this book, smiling most of the way 😀
New author to me but I'm already reading book 2 in the series. I'd recommend this one for a day when you just want something fun, easy to read and simply enjoyable. Great new world, fun protagonist.
Cute story, but not sure I cared for how easy everything was for Grace settling into her new life. Everyone knew she was coming (even before she did) and everyone welcomed her eagerly (except one person). Also didn’t care for the bait and switch (spoiler) about the one available hunk being gay then not being gay.
Haven't read a straight mystery in a whole. Yes there were witches but magic and the supernatural was not the focus. Investigation with limited danger was the main event. The book wasd a lot less violent and... sexual than the lady one I read. And Grace was a good character to get behind.
