My name is Volrath, and I am an Aesir of Asgard. I have no family name to speak of, but then I discovered I could tame, train, and breed the great dragons that are feared throughout Asgard. Now that I have this incredible power, it is my mission to scour the nine realms in search of more dragons to add to my menagerie. I am joined by a beautiful Light Elf and a powerful half-Valkyrie sorceress, and these women want to bind themselves to me and bear my children. This is the start of my legacy, and my journey to sit beside Odin and Freya as the greatest warrior mage Asgard has ever seen.
An ok story but not for me. Vikings who say "cool", drink from glasses, know what testosterone is (wasnt identified properly and named until the 1930s), and the only good males are all touchy feely and in touch with their feminine side thinking everything is cute and adorable except strong men - who are predictably stupid and bad.
Before you start writing about things you don't know about, might wish to do more research. The Aesir were gods. And only one of two groups of gods in Norse mythology . . . and each one has been named and given at least slight details in their myths . . . SMH try harder.
I fail to understand how this book has so many positive ratings. Either people will really just blindly eat up whatever “Logan Jacobs” (who is obviously not a real person, just a pseudonym a team of ghostwriters use to churn out books) writes, or there is something fishy going on. Even by harem novel standards, this is bad. Even by Logan Jacobs standards (which aren’t very high, mind you), this is bad. There are no redeeming qualities to Dragons of Asgard, aside from the fact that it’s (mercifully) paced quickly and relatively easy to get through. I am not exaggerating when I say this book has quite possibly the most repetitive plot I have ever seen. For something that is EIGHT HUNDRED PAGES LONG, the absolute WORST thing you can do is make the story have no variety. It goes a bit like this: 1. Rath, his girlfriends and dragons go through a portal to try and find more dragons 2. They get attacked by a monster 3. They go home 4. They eat dinner (why are there are so many scenes dedicated to meals???) 5. Repeat, repeat, repeat Compare this to Monster Girl Base, another portal-fantasy type book by the same author(s). There, the story actually acknowledges the fact that there are stakes - and the worlds the MC and his love interests end up in are actually interesting. Dragons of Asgard is simply a dumbed down version of Norse mythology with no substance whatsoever. Now, it should go without saying that since this is a harem novel, the characters have very little depth and every woman instantly falls in love with the MC. However, I feel like that’s a lot less egregious for most harem lit, since they’re usually the equivalent of ~200-300 pages. You simply can’t tell a long, overarching story in such a short amount of time, which is why writing something longer is the perfect way to remedy ths problem. 800 pages allows for more than enough length to incorporate compelling arcs for the three central characters. But nope. It’s more of the same stuff you’ve seen before, only this time with tons of padding to artificially extend the length! The MC also likes to incessantly remind us of his girlfriends’ hair colours, among other things that literally do nothing for the plot. As for an ending, there isn’t one! Surprise, surprise. It’s just setting us up for the sequel. There isn’t any main antagonist, and the final battle was spectacularly underwhelming. There is some intrigue and mystery in the plot, but trust me when I say it’s not very interesting.
TLDR, Dragons of Asgard tries to be what I assume to be a slice-of-life portal fantasy. It fails on every level.
Huh. It’s almost like the people pretending to be a guy called Logan Jacobs care more about quantity than quality. It shows. The books written under this pseudonym are a mixed bag. Avoid this one. It’s not worth your time.
First this is an expensive book for Logan Jacobs. Second this is a long book for Logan Jacobs. Third this book is worth every cent! Fourth I need book 2 yesterday!
The character and world development is second to none and I have to say that this book is vying for first place amongst a number of other series by Logan Jacobs. The cover and the blurb let you know that this book has romance and it is not fade to black romance.
I am loving everything about this and need to know what happens with Rath, Kas, Astra and the dragons in the next installment.
I gave this book 5 star because the protagonist was a humble skilled person instead of an aragant jerk like so many others in this type of book. The story is engaging and fun
With Skullduggery finished, Dragons of Asgard becomes my new favourite series by this author. With dragons, beautiful women, well fleshed out characters, great friendships and relationships, what's not to like about this series? It even manages to avoid a few tropes that I thought it was falling into and therefore it managed to surprise me in a good way, and that's always welcome.
Easily the standout element of this book is the dragons and the main character's relationship with them. The author has done a great job of making the dragons feel like genuine characters to me even though they don't talk. Each of the three main dragons in this book were distinct from one another and not just there as plot devices, as they so easily could have been. As a result, the relationship the protagonist forms with them feels natural and I loved the friendship they form.
Even though this book is clearly more adult than the How to Train Your Dragon movies, the friendship between Hiccup and Toothless is reminiscent of what we find here and that's great because that was one of the highlights of those movies.
Probably the biggest flaw with this book and the reason for a loss of a star in this novel was the over-reliance on time-wasting side quests. The time that the characters spent portal hopping to other worlds felt like little more than a distraction from the main storyline rather than something that added to the story in a meaningful way. Unfortunately, they make up a big chunk of the book.
What was worse about that was that I felt like they were there because for the first 2 thirds of this book the author didn't know where he wanted to take the story and therefore created these side quests just to keep the characters busy while he figured it out. That lack of motivation showed and it slowed down the progression of the book.
Overall though, this was a great first novel by an author who can be quite hit and miss with his books. I am convinced that there are actually multiple authors writing under this pseudonym, and I am happy that this novel at least is written by one of the better ones. I eagerly look forward to the next novel in the series.
Just an overwhelming lack of attention to detail on the part of the author paired with mediocre to bad prose. Off the top of my head:
- Multiple pairs of boots are bought by the protagonist with the conversation going something like "Hey, can I buy some boots?" "Sure; that'll be a buck-fifty." No mention is made of size whatsoever, and the protagonist has no in-story reason to know what size is appropriate. - A location is described as being nearby the protagonist's house which from context means that it's less than a half hour away; probably closer to 15 minutes. Yet the protagonist and those accompanying him decide to camp out and hunt for dinner because it's too late to get back home. - What's described as the countryside sounds more like grand central park; has the author ever actually left whatever city he's in to see what the countryside is like? - etc. I've forgotten several points I intended to put in this review as I was reading it.
Absolutely the best read of this year! And probably the best book written by Logan Jacobs! It has it all, Norse Mythos, dragons, gorgeous women and plenty of battles and action to go around. The characters are all intriguing and have great personalities, especially the Dragons themselves, and it's amusing reading their antics. World building is great and a lot of research has been done to make this book, with Logan Jacobs alterations and flair to make an amazing novel and great start to a new series.
I did it again! Started a book series where the next book was not ready! And since this particular segment was so interesting and descriptive I was eagerly wanting to continue and see where it led. Yes, it was typical Logan Jacobs but with a really interesting story line. Everything necessary to advance the tale was worked in so that it all fit and smoothly transitioned. I’m highly recommending this tale and anxiously waiting for it to continue.
And it was an awesome decision on my part. I've read other Logan Paul books before and even though the synapse of the book didn't seem that cool to me I bought it anyway based on my awesome experiences reading other Logan Paul books. This is very different from other dragon and Asgard books I've ready before, which makes it all the better as I got to explore this new version of dragon lore with no expectations. If you're reading this review to try and figure out if you want to read this book or not, trust me, you WANT to read it. Enjoy 😉
While I enjoyed this book I felt that it had missed its purpose. With the removal of the sex and language this could indeed be a great entry level submission in the ya fantasy genre. That being said it is still a good read and, no the sex and language did not bother me, I just thought that Mayne Mr. Jacobs may want to cast his eye in that direction also. Well done sir.
Long book with not much interesting happening. And Rath is a simp, it's ok to be nice but get a little backbone.
There's nothing more annoying to me that when MC is having a conversation with someone that his friends, standing right there, can't hear or understand, and said friends keep fucking interrupting the conversation wanting to know what's all being said. How about shutting up until the convo is over, and then ask your questions.
Logan Jacobs poured his heart and soul into this one, and you will most certainly like it. The character development, depth of plot, and obvious thorough research really brings this story to life creatively. Highly enjoyable, and will be one of Logan Jacobs’s best!
This is my first review, and giving it 4 stars. Volrath is much wiser than his years would suggest. He appears to be very insightful into others and himself. He is willing to ask for help when needed. This is the beginning, of hopefully, a greatly received hero, with many more exploits to come.
There were a few places that lagged but I worked through them. A spelling/grammar checker was needed as well. That said, apart from a meeting Rath appears to have intentionally forgotten but insisted upon nagging my thoughts, it was a clever and well thought out story. I'm looking forward to book two!
Awesome book that was a lot more slice of.life than other series by the author. The slow meaningful build up with the girls was believable. The cute relationship with the dragons was the best part.
This story was worth the wait alot of effort was put into this book it was a sort of adventurous training montage/slice of life but the dragons a awesome and the character's are well fleshed out and still growing Cant wait for the next one
Awesome new series, clearly put a lot of thought into it
This book was long easily twice the length of a he usually puts out. It was like how to train you dragon but for adults. He clearly did his research on Norse mythology
I absolutely love stories with rich and vibrant world building and characters and in that regard Dragons of Asgard does not disappoint! Norse mythology is very powerful in what it can bring and enrich fiction!
More please!!!This author has easily become one of my favorites in this genre. The characters and worlds he creates are truly amazing. I'm anxiously looking forward to the next book and seeing how he develops the MC and his group!
I enjoy many of his novels, and this one has been one of my favorite first reads. I enjoyed how it was allowed to progress at a “normal” schedule and not forced. Keep it up!
This was a much longer book from Mr.Jacob's and i loved every page, the relationship between rath and his dragons are written fantastically. Made me think of my dog and after that i was hooked great book cant wait for the next
I enjoyed this book quite a bit. Good characters, great action, oh and dragons. What's not to like? Except maybe give the finger some love. Give this book a try.
This is a good book. You shouldy read it. I like the story. The characters are fun. The book is a good read. i enjoyed it alot.. Download or buy it today. why not?
This book grabbed me right from the get go and kept me involved all the way through. Can’t wait for book 2. Plenty of action and great storyline. The characters are easy to like and it looks like they’ll be continuing their adventures. Can’t wait to find out who are Raths parents.
The story of a warrior who lives in the land of the Norse gods. An unusual warrior who thinks and strategized while fighting instead of just fighting in a blind rage, plunders a large spotted egg. A good read.
I liked the MC. A lot of harem protagonists are smug jerks by the end of it, but Volrath was a down-to-earth, sensible guy. There was a solid reason why he ended up with 2 women, which is always nice. I hate when girls just fall for the MC when he smiles at them
Great start, I hope the dragons could talk soon as well. Dentist's brother? I guess will find out. Will he have children soon? I would think so. Is it only a few weeks? Hard to keep track of time. More to come!
It’s just so fun to go into other worlds..learn about Norse mythology..romance..And dragons! Couldn’t not read this! It’s the best fantasy adventure romance there is! The characters are wonderful! Anyone else obsessed with Viking culture should read this!
