The last thing I expected to get for Christmas was kidnapped…
Ari: I also didn’t expect to escape, get amnesia, and wash up on a reclusive millionaire’s private beach.
I didn’t expect that millionaire to turn out to be insanely-hot, ex-actor Holden Amundsen, who fled Hollywood years ago after a scandal.
And I definitely didn’t expect famously straight Holden Amundsen to not be quite so straight after all—at least not when he’s in bed with me.
Talk about holy nights...
But when pictures of us kissing end up online, more than Holden’s reputation is at stake. Holden promises he’ll protect me when my kidnappers come calling, but I’m more worried about my heart.
Holden says what we have can’t last, but I know love when I feel it. So how do I convince him that finding each other is a Christmas miracle worth fighting for?

I loved this book from start to finish. It was an original, exciting, and enjoyable take on a classic fairytale. I loved how the author established an immediate desire and care for the main character as he tries to remember his past while handling his emotions and budding feelings with his rescuer.
Both main characters are experiencing many personal struggles, but they choose to work on their struggles together, which was great to see the changes develop throughout the story. I loved how the author did a realistic update on a classic fairy tale that both honors its origin while creating something fresh, new, and exciting.
Both main characters are a joy to read, they complement each other and have amazing chemistry, which is always a plus. I loved this novel and am excited to see other fairy tale interpretations with a fresh and new spin.

What? No mermen ! ? Ari is on Christmas vacation with his family in Iceland when he's kidnapped. He ends up on the shoreline of Birch Bay, Maine, where Holden lives. Ari/Gus, 25, Jewish, is a beautiful man, and Holden is captivated by him. Ari has amnesia, and is quite injured, so Holden takes him to the mansion above the cliff, and fully intends to call an ambulance, but Ari said no.
Holden,30, an actor, has been hiding out for 7 years from Hollywood and cameras, and is glad there won't be nosey folks around. Ari has nightmares that give him clues to what happened after the kidnapping, and they are scary.
Spencer Spears does give us funny, witty and snarky banter between our two men. The pace is even, and the story is expectant, but is a bit disappointing. There are no mermen, and I expected one.
Holden and his secrets are overshadowing Ari, who needs to discover what happened to him. It's a mystery, a mixed up memory for Ari, with missteps and many questions, but Ari is constantly horny, even when in pain and confusion. The sexy times are hot.
The two men are forced together, and I saw no real connection, that I needed. The wrap comes quickly and is a strange event. The end is happy ! I guess it's not my cup of tea.
I’ll admit, I picked this up because the blurb made it sound like sort of crazy crack and sometimes I just am in the mood for that. I did find it more serious than the blurb suggests, but that didn’t take away anything from the story for me and I totally enjoyed this one. While the set up is kind of fantastical, and Ari has a tendency early on to crack jokes when he should be fearing for his life, this story was very well rounded with some nice character development, sweet and sexy romance, and a bit of suspense as well.
Ari is a totally engaging character and a highlight of the book for me. He is fun and sweet and sometimes silly. He knows what he wants (Holden) and he isn’t afraid to go for it.
Ultimately I was a big fan of this book and the MCs, but it did take me a hot minute or two to get there.
It took some time for the characters to find their groove it seemed, but once they did I loved the banter, the chemistry and the evolution of the relationship between Ari and Holden.
The set up was great, but the talk of so many boners after a ton of trauma doesn't read too legitimate, they didn't have to try that hard, because the chemistry did come to them and the slower build up makes it way more worthwhile to me in the long run. Also, no, no one called the cops, which is weird, I had to just let that one go and move on, as implausible as it was.
But, like I said, once the story got it's groove and the characters could work themselves out, it was a great ride to be on.
I suppose this one is probably my problem and not necessarily the problem of the book. I just downloaded when I read little mermaid retelling but besides the names there isn’t a lot of retelling going on.
I was also a bit frustrated with both of the characters and their thought processes/personality. I kept wanting to shout at them.
I also skipped all the sex scenes and the sex talk because the kink isn’t my kink and I felt like I skipped half the book even though the main aspect was a kidnapping and amnesia 🤔
This is an entertaining retelling of The Little Mermaid. The author quickly swept me into the story of two people facing their own issues. There is something for everyone in the story from humor, suspense, and romance. This is a great story.
This is such a wonderful retelling of The Little Mermaid for the MM Fairy Tale Romance series. Ari washes up on the beach of Holland's home in Maine after being kidnapped whilst on holiday with his family in Iceland. He's covered in cuts, bruises and has amnesia with no recollection of his past or himself. Holland has been a recluse at his home for several years following a traumatic incident and so is not used to having a person all in his space, let alone a beautiful young man. Holland allows Ari to stay with him as he struggles to recover his memory and from his injuries, certain that going out into the world isn't safe for him and feeling a sense of protection from Holland. Neither man could ever guess at how or why Ari came to wash up on Holland's property and as the story unfolds, there is drama, distress, insecurities and guilt from both sides and Holland also has things from his past that he is still dealing with. Slowly a bond forms between them as Ari knocks down Holland's walls a brick at a time and they build up a trusting friendship. Attraction is immediate for both men but neither is willing to act on it for their own reasons which is where trust comes into it, especially for Holland. This is a wonderful story with great relationship development and I found it so easy to fall into the story, both for the plot and the characters themselves. My heart went out to them both; as Ari continuously experiences nightmares that slowly uncovers a past event but with no knowledge of who he is, he's lost in this world with no family or friends that he knows and the to Holland who is still weighed down with feelings of loss and guilt for an event and relationship that occurred years before. Only together they can support each other and provide a happiness that neither could have predicted, especially once people start knocking on the door, demanding their attention. There are several great characters alongside the MC's, especially Hollands best friend. She definitely provides some light relief with the care packages she sends him. Ari's family are also wonderfully loving and so welcoming. I cannot recommend this story enough! I loved everything about it and think that it's a perfect fit for the series. It has great similarities to the original story but it separate to stand on it's own. I received an ARC and am happily giving a review.
DNF 59 %. I admit I had my hopes too high when I heard it was a modern retelling of the little mermaid. First off no merfolk or princes. Major bummer :<. What we have are 2 conveniently wealthy men trying to hide from the world. Eric has a dark past in Hollywood and hides from the paparazzi in his big lonely mansion. Ari doesn’t remember who he is and was found shipwrecked on the beach looking like death. He has a strong suspicion he is being hunted down and wants to stay hidden with Eric in the mansion. While Ari was funny and charming I couldn’t bring myself to root for the relationship because of how sexually charged it started right from the flood gates. It was simply distasteful to be beaten bloody, and likely suffering from hypothermia but still horny as hell for the cute stranger to take out his dick for you. I mean Ari’s “everything hurt” and all he could think about was sucking dick. Stubbing my toe would be enough to deflate sexy feelings for me but not for Ari and Eric. Eric saw those strangulation marks and decided Ari needed a hickey. Just. It felt like some kind of weird injury kink that I was soooo not into. While Ari does eventually start to heal I found I had little investment in them as a couple due to their less than appetizing beginnings.
The Little Mermaid was my favorite growing up and I wanted to like this book so bad. But I just couldn't drum up enough interest to continue.
Well this was just lovely. It was a hurt comfort with both MC as one was physically and emotionally hurt by recent trauma and was was emotionally scarred by a past trauma. Ari was such a lively fun character until his unfortunate predicament occurred and then he was scared and hurt and lost. Holden had been lost for a long time and then he found Ari. Ari brought Holden back to life. There relationship was a slow burn which made complete sense for them. Once Ari figured out everything that had happened with him that storyline was wrapped up quickly, which was great, as the book was really about Ari and Holden finding love within each other and making it a home.
Sorry, but this was a bit too constructed for my taste. Who, in his right mind, finds someone obviously choked and nearly drowned on a beach in december, freezing and wet and just brings him in the house, lays him on a bed (wet!) and leaves him there for 13 (!) hours just to wallow in his selfpity that now he can't be a recluse anymore???? And this continues.... Just no.
Spencer Spears Sea Kissed is a delightful modern day fairy tale. It's fabulous and is definitely worth a read!
Ari is on the run, but when he's washed up on a beach, he has amnesia. Luckily for him, Holden is there to both save him and care for him.
It's a great story, as both men have complicated backstories, and both are hiding. I appreciate the way both men have some mental damage and the way they work through it. With some forced proximity, the two get to know one another, and eventually care for each other. In the end, both are trying to save and protect the other.
The opposites attract aspect is wonderfully explored. There's an age gap, and some major personality differences. I always love a good quiet and withdrawn man meeting a talkative and outgoing one.
Best of all though is a cat named Frog, who will have you laughing out loud.
Their story is certainly sweet, with plenty of humor, as well as some major dirty mind moments. So much fun. There are some wonderful secondary characters who you'll fall for, as well as some twists and turns to keep you on the edge at times.
Written in alternating 1st person pov, we get to know both characters well. Both are complex men, with well developed backgrounds. The light action and danger add a good element to the story. And there's definitely some heat involved, with a little bit of a daddy kink.
Sea Kissed is a fantastic modern day retelling of The Little Mermaid. Spencer Spears does a great job switching things up for a unique take on the classic fairytale. I love it all!
Even though I know the Little Mermaid storyline by heart, this amazing romance kept me guessing the whole way through! I've never read a book by this author before, and I'm honestly so impressed by the incredible characters and plotline in this story. Ari and Holden didn't seem like the likeliest couple at first, but they completely won me over during their time at Edgecliffe Manor.
The whole concept of a reclusive ex-actor finding a man washed up on the beach with no memories was so intriguing, and I thought it was executed really nicely. Not only was I chomping at the bit to see Ari recover his memories and figure out who kidnapped him, but I was also desperately curious to know why Holden locked himself away for all those years. As Ari and Holden grew closer, they shared just enough of their secrets to drive me wild as I waited for the full truth to come out. Between that and the intense sexual attraction these men were fighting to resist, I was a mess of anticipation (in the best way) for at least the first half of this story. Much to my delight, Holden and Ari couldn't deny their chemistry for all that long, and that's when the real fun started. As soon as Holden let go of his fears and worries about not deserving happiness, his and Ari's relationship soared to new heights of passion. Their steamy moments were insanely hot, and as soon as Ari brought his Daddy kink out to play I knew I was done for.
While I could have happily revelled in Ari and Holden's secluded bliss forever, neither of them could keep reality out for that long. As Holden was forced to face his past and Ari regained some of his memories, the question switched from if they would ever get together to how they could make a relationship work outside the manor. I'll admit that I did see the "shocking reveal" of who the true villian was coming a mile away, but I'm still highly satisfied with how everything worked out.
**I voluntarily read an ARC of this book. This review expresses my honest thoughts and opinions.
This story was a retelling of the Little Mermaid, without the sad ending, and I thought the author did an good job with that but I had a few issues.
It started out like gang busters. I loved it! If only the whole story had that same feel as the beginning but the long sex scenes and if I'm honest the insta love thing brought it down, at least it did for me. I can see this appealing to a lot but I thought it missed the mark a bit.
I loved Ari and Holden, A LOT! I loved the mystery/suspense/drama aspect. Ari's bratiness and non stop talking made me laugh but I really wish their romance wasn't an insta love/lust situation. I really wish it had been a slow burn. They had more than enough chemistry and enough time (meaning the length of the book) to develop the relationship slowly it would have been amazing. Their situation was the perfect vehicle for a slow burn, high sexual tension type relationship.
In the end I more than just liked it Sea Kissed but I didn't quite get to the point of loving it. *sigh*
TAGS -- Fairy Tale retelling/Little Mermaid -- mystery -- suspense -- amnesia -- sweet -- sexy -- made me chuckle -- LOVED the MCs... Ari & Holden -- insta lust/love -- wish it was a slow burn -- some sex scenes too long (I skimmed them) -- family, good and bad -- learning to let go of grief -- definitely worth the read
Sea Kissed is a fascinating book - I honestly could not put it down!! This book begins with Ari’s kidnapping, so we get a sense of who he is (snarky, brave, adorable, and slightly kinky) before he loses his memory and washes up on a private beach belonging to Holden (formerly Eric), a reclusive former TV star. These characters were great and the plot had the twists and turns that made this story interesting and intriguing. It was full of excitement, action, emotions, family affairs and funny banters, and of course a happy ending to fulfill our heart's desires. Ah, don't forget to read the bonus chapter. Sooo hot!
I received an arc in exchange of an honest opinion
A huge suspension of disbelief is needed and expected but once past that this was enjoyable. I’ve never *shock* seen “The Little Mermaid” so I didn’t really have any expectations as far as plot or character. The only really sour note for me was at the end when, in the middle of having sex, Holden blurts out to Ari that he wants Ari to get fucked by a lot of other guys then Holden have his turn on Ari’s ass last. And then afterwards they have a discussion about that scenario. And Ari’s into it. And the book ends. Really classy M/M fairy tale, huh?
Sea Kissed is the sixth book in a series of 6 modern MM fairytale retellings by 6 different authors. Sea Kissed is a modern MM retelling of the Little Mermaid written by Spencer Spears. I loved the story of Ari and Holden. Their story was hot, sexy, sweet and very well written. If you love (modern) fairytale retellings or just love sweet romances this one is for you.
sweet retelling of the Little Mermaid story, sort of. I wasn't sure of Holden at first, he was a grumpy man who seemed to only have his hotness going for him. Ari/Gus was a vapid guy with hidden depths. It had enough intrigue to keep me interested and the story kept a steady pace. I'm a sucker for fairytale retellings and this was a good one.
Ari(el) ends up being washed up at the shore and is found by Holden, who used to go as Eric in his former Hollywood life. Ari having lost his voice & memory plus their names are actually the only things that are similar to the Little Mermaid. When I heard that it was a lgbtq retelling, I expected maybe a little bit more fantasy like mermen or something, but it's actually a contemporary story. Which is fine. Really...Buuuuut!
I usually like Spencer Spears stories, but I had really big issues getting into this one. The first time, the MCs have a proper conversation that is not cringe-worthy like hell is after like 1/3 of the book is done. I don't know, but Ari is really weird. All he can think about is sex... even when he's almost killed and beaten to a pulp and hurting, he's mostly thinking about sex. What the hell? I know this is fiction, but seriously? And Eric/Holden isn't less weird. He's giving me whiplash with his mood swings. And then back to Ari... why the heck does he think that Holden should let him stay? For free? And then he wants to stay there? Just like that...? Is Holden a community welfare association? He's not much better, though. They are both really odd and I found them both really frustrating.
In the end I started to enjoy the book a bit more, but it's definitely one of my least favorite books by Spears. I think she can do better.
Likes: The plot and world building demonstrated a good conversation about various types of social/ economic power and consent dynamics.
Dislikes: -Introducing humiliation during intimacy scenes as somehow desirable -Unhygienic intimacy decisions that are called risqué, but are actually simply unsafe, in addition to being unnecessary - Introducing an agreement between the couple to bring cheating into the relationship - massive amounts of generalized religious bigotry
** mild spoilers**
The book was average but an ok read (for those willing to ignore the religious bigotry) until the romantic relationship resolved. Afterwards, it seems like the author added gross unsanitary practices and cheating to the intimacy scenes because they ran out of ideas and wanted to add drama instead of showing how the couple could progress in a settled relationship (possibly by finally going in vacation to Death Valley etc.).
The ending just seems very unresolved even though it’s clear no more of the story will be told. Whose idea of an HEA goes directly from “I got tested and I am clear of STDs” to randomly agreeing to threesomes with strangers? It’s not my idea of an HEA and I just cannot recommend the book.
"Sea Kissed" by Spencer Spears is the next installment in the series inspired by fairy tales and "Little Mermaid" is yet another story that got it's new life thanks to a talented author. Nevertheless, I think it is worth noting that many times when reading this novel, "Beauty and the Beast" comes to mind and this is due to Holden's character, or at least its traits that he initially shows us. Well, it turns out that our "prince" Eric is not as charming as he might seem. He resembles this rather grumpy, often cold Beast, and only with time he shows his true colours, big heart and just his real face. Another thing is the library, which is what we all like the most in Disney's version of the fairy tale. Yes, in "Sea Kissed" there is a fairy-tale library full of books. And let's add also some arguments, snow, danger... In short, in this novel, Spencer Spears has definitely captured more than one fairy tale, so that "Sea Kissed" can really enchant us.
I would like to write a little more about the characters we get to know in "Sea Kissed", as they are undoubtedly worth our interest. If I were to describe them in one word, I would say they are complicated. This makes it very difficult to form our opinion about them. They have as many flaws as qualities. And that's what's so beautiful about this novel, as it makes the characters very believable. After all, we are all equally filled with qualities and flaws. What's more, both Holder and Ari have a broadly developed psyche, and thus there is depth in their creation. It is precisely what is deeply hidden in Ari and Holden that arouses our interest in them the most. In the case of the former, the leading motif shaping his psyche in this novel is fear, while in the case of the latter, what shapes him mentally is a sense of guilt. Therefore, when we read "Sea Kissed" we are enchanted by the characters, because they have so much to offer us.
Finally, I'd like to write a few words about the story presented in "Sea Kissed" itself. After all, it is really interesting, as it is filled with action, humor, elements of drama, and thus keeps us in suspense until the end and makes us its slaves. We simply do not want to stop reading until we know everything, until we get to the end and all major threads are closed. To put it simply, Spencer Spears has written a story that engrosses us completely in the blink of en eye. "Sea Kissed" is not only a contemporary, changed version of a fairy tale, it is a fantastic novel with which even people who don't know stories like "The Little Mermaid" or "Beauty and the Beast", I've mentioned above, will fall in love. And remember, as for me, this novel is like some kind of two in one deal and much, much more.
In conclusion, "Sea Kissed" is a really great novel that you will fall in love with immediately and which will make you addicted. It's a real page-turner so you won't be able to wait to find out as soon as possible what would happen in our characters lives. Believe me, you will be delighted with this novel.

Przypomina raczej gburowatego, często oschłego Bestię i dopiero z czasem pokazuje swoje drugie oblicze.
heard this was a gay retelling of the little mermaid, so i had to check it out. and, despite the lack of merpeople, i'm very, very glad that i did.
this is the second book of spencer's i've read so far, and the second book of his that i've really enjoyed. the plot was a teensy bit silly toward the end, but who is reading m/m romance for hyper-realistic plotlines? certainly not me, so i can just turn my brain off and enjoy the story for what it is when the writing's this good.
Elements of this were sweet - but they were bookended by serious wtf-ery
The initial attraction on meeting was creepy due to Ari’s condition. Holden being a reclusive dick when Ari was in a bad way and just leaving him to it without even bringing him a glass of water or helping him out of his sodden clothes was bizarre.
Then at the end the sheer ridiculousness of the wrap up drama. Sigh.
My first, but definitely not my last, book from Spencer Spears. How have I not read this author before I have to ask myself??? This is an awesome retelling of The Little Mermaid; one that Disney will not be filming in the near future!!
This book reads with an amazing freshness that could come from the sea and lightness to the words, that makes your heart float and giggle as if you were laying in a bouncy cloud tiggled by naughty mermaid cherubs whilst you read the book. His turn of phrase is hilarious and had me lol'ing on more than one occasion; I loved the conversational and often train of thought style of writing for the characters, it's exactly how my own internal monologue interacts with me when I'm alone!!!
Our 'Ariel' character is full of youthful naivety and joy as per the original fairytale, even in the face of adversity, he's written with a wicked sense of humour, shyness and an easy smile; not to mention wonderful hair and beautiful eyes. Our 'Eric' on the other hand could almost be Catholic with his dark sense of guilt hanging from his every angle, of which I vision him with many! SS has his intensity down to a tee so that the reader can feel him shut down or light up as you read the words; his internal angst is so palpable that you'd know it was there without being told about it as part of the story! The emotions of them both the dip and soar through their twisty turnie journey through two new lives, a crystal loving friend, an ex-Marine, paparazzi, ear flap hats, hot chocolate and marshmallows, Yule, library shelves, first editions, random suits of armour, a persistent agent, bothersome fans, dodgy receptionists, a disappearing housekeeper and not forgetting one big ass scary cat!
The landscape of the book is well set from the beginning and moves well throughout the story. SS moves the story across the world but also within the country and then town. There is plenty of description and feeling so that you know just how cold the snow is, how slippery the floor is, how jagged the rocks, how dark the alleyway, how salty the ........... latkes are!! And it all moves with great pace and flow; no awkwardness, no stalling just page after page of fantastic reading.
Yep, it's all in there, including some rather steamy scenes so be ready for those in case you weren't expecting them as they are definitely there!!!
Basically I loved this book and can't wait to read more in this fairytale retelling series but more importantly more from Spencer Spears.
I'm totally recommending this book to you but if it's your first MM book just be aware that you don't want someone reading the sex scenes over your shoulder on the train xx
I am a sucker for The Little Mermaid. I cannot tell you how many times I have watched Disney’s version. I was thrilled when my daughter was casted as one of Ariel’s sisters in her school play, but I digress.
I’m not ashamed to say, that while I enjoyed the entire series, this is my absolute favorite addition. Each book was written by different authors, reinterpreting different fairy tales. They’re all complete stand alones, and can be read in any order, whatsoever.
Ari is a bit of a twerp, in the best way possible. I love his snark, his comedic timing, and his sweet nature. He may be able to turn just about anything into an innuendo, but he has the biggest heart. I love, and appreciate, how he doesn’t lose himself just because he lost his memories. It just shows how embedded it is into the fibers of his being.
Holden is punishing himself for something he feels completely responsible for. His guilt is eating him alive, despite becoming a recluse. Nothing, he has found, has helped elevate it, or been punishment enough. He feels like he doesn’t deserve to be happy, accept friendship, let alone love, or anything remotely good. It breaks my heart.
These two men are absolutely perfect for each other. I loved watching the push and pull of their growing relationship. I loved how genuine and authentic it felt. I felt like they both brought something to the table, the other needed, that gave them balance. Holden may think he was just helping Ari, but Ari was also helping him lay his ghosts to rest. I loved these men together, except I would prefer Ari to be the one cooking.
The mystery, in the book, really isn’t a mystery to the reader, but the characters don’t know. It was enjoyable watching it play out, as they catch up to us. The intrigue wasn’t over the top, or even remotely ridiculous. It was well handled, and aptly done.
I loved the way this book was written. It flowed easily, kept me captivated (when life let me sit down and read), had me chuckling one minute, then swooning the next, and broke my heart before putting it back together. This story had me in touch with all of my feelings/emotions, and I did not mind one bit. The characters were delightful, well developed, charming, and very lovable—minus three people.
Overall, I fell in love with this book, and I highly recommend it. Make sure you’re alone before diving into the bonus chapter. It is NOT SAFE FOR WORK. I thought the book had some steamy moments, along with a ton of tender ones, but that bonus chapter? Whoa. Spencer Spears added some extra spice when writing it. (Wink, wink, wink)
***While a copy was received from the author, a review was not required. All thoughts, and opinions, are my own.***
This book opens with Ari’s kidnapping, so we get a sense of who he is (snarky, brave, adorable, and slightly kinky) before he loses his memory and washes up on a private beach belonging to Holden (formerly Eric), a reclusive erstwhile tv star. I love Ari as a character-- even without his voice or his memory, he manages to be so completely and utterly himself that he bends the fabric of everyone else’s existence and reshapes it in kinder, brighter, happier ways. Watching the relationship between Ari and Holden take shape alongside the plot twists of his amnesia and (justified) sense of danger and unease is heartwarming and exhilarating at the same time. I can clearly see the elements of The Little Mermaid here in the lost voice, the characters’ names, etc., but I also loved that there are shades of other fairy tale tropes as well, including a quirky mansion full of old furniture, a magnificent library, and a love interest who can be as tragically grumpy as any Disney Beast. Add in also Frog, the tetchy, preternaturally intelligent cat, and it’s the perfect backdrop for this particular story. I respect the way the chemistry between Ari and Holden takes time to build, and that Holden in particular is super careful about boundaries, power dynamics, and consent. The steam, and kink, quotients of the novel ratchet up dramatically in the final chapters, and if the groundwork for the sweeter, more romantic and emotionally balanced framework of their relationship hadn’t been so well established previously, it might have been too much. Ultimately, however, the story ends up being both hot and heartwarming.
*I received an ARC of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This was a truly awesome book! Loosely related to the Little Mermaid, it has an amnesiac ship accident survivor with vocal damage found by a reclusive actor. But from there it is its own story and does not disappoint!
Holden is an actor who has hidden away ridden with guilt after an accident ruined the acting career he had. Or so he thinks. It becomes clear that despite Holden's insistence that he ruined his life and that of a former co-actor, he likely is not the villain he believes himself to be. But he is so mired in that guilt that he cannot move on and now lives stuck in the past in his huge estate.
Ari describes himself as being not too bright but he is rather downplaying himself. Though he is not one for the sciences and he has no course to his life yet he is a confident and bright young man. When he get kidnapped and ends up washed up on shore, his injuries and his amnesia terrify him. Despite all this his personality soon shines through. He is optimistic and very sunny, with a great outlook to life even after things have gone so awry. Watching him gain his memory and figure things out about himself was hilarious. Though having no personal memories was distressing, he chose instead to be proactive and try to find out about himself. Things like figuring out his sexuality and kinks were absolutely hilarious and it was clear that he would persevere no matter what happened.
These two together made for an amazing story. Holden is uncertain, but his sweet caregiving nature comes through as he tries to help out Ari. And though Ari does not remember his past, he is determined to make a future and to have it include his sexy saviour. Watching them make that a reality was a story well worth the read!
There´s so many reasons to pick up „Sea Kissed“ it´s hard to decide where to begin with: It´s a beautiful fairy tale retelling: Spencer Spears plays with quite a few similarities off the original and what we know as the orginal, that we immediately feel familiar with the story. The cozy fairy tale feeling poured into me instantly. But those traits are twisted so very uniquely into something new, it had my intention from the very beginning and it never gets boring. It even has some suspense which is very catchy but never messes with the romance in the story. On top of that we get snow, christmas lights and a very sweet christmas happy end. So if you are still looking for your christmas read with a little twist – that´s your go to book. I loved Ariel and Eric from the very beginning. Their pining and how they are coming closer to each other step by step, is just adorable. The development of the backstory gives the whole lot an interresting spin, that was pulling on my heart strings. And just when you thought you just finished an amazing romance read, there´s this bonus scene. And just when you think you know your Spencer Spears´ books, he´s coming along with something new and steamy and surprising and like a whole christmas present in itself. For all of you who have read the books that came bevor: you are up for a GREAT surprise. And really: there´s so much potential to go from there :D I cannot wait to see where your character (!) is headed from here on! For all of you who are not sure, what I´m talking about: a hot and steamy bonus scene awaits you, that you definitely don´t want to miss out on.
Ari never asked to be kidnapped. He certainly didn’t ask to be taken on a boat and swept overboard. Now if only he could remember his own name and how he wound up in Maine. Holden just wants to live alone with his guilt and be a recluse for the rest of his life. Those plans get swept away however when he finds the gorgeous young man on the beach near his home injured and unconscious. As these two men get to know each other, it becomes apparent that they both have secrets.
I love a good “fairy tale.” This one is a loose retelling of “The Little Mermaid” although thankfully no one actually dies in this one! This is a great version of the classic tale. There aren’t any fantastic elements here, but there don’t have to be. Just two men who are trying to get to know each other as best they can. Holden just wants to hide because he feels responsible for the death of a friend and co-star from Hollywood seven years before. Ari can’t remember anything, not even his own name. As they unravel the mystery of what happened to Ari, they also have to deal with Holden’s past. These characters were great. I also love Holden’s friend Hadley and Daisy, his security detail. Let’s not forget the scene stealing cat Frog. This was a delightful story with just a dash of danger. I highly recommend it. All of the stories in this fairy tale retelling series have been pretty good. Go out and look them up. I did read an arc of this one.
Spears is one of my fave authors and most of the books I have read by them I've really liked a lot!
This book was a bit different for me. It had mystery, some hair-raising situations, intriguing characters, including some side characters and a hurt/comfort love story, plus a big grumpy cat named "Frog".
The two main characters, who have both been hurt, either physically, emotionally, and/or mentally, are slowing re-discovering themselves as well as a love interest in each other. It's kinda fun to watch the "Xmas Grinch"* unwind!
*(there's a devastating reason behind one of the Mc's dislike of the Christmas Holidays)
What confused me was mostly in the last part of the book, as they seemed to change tack: both main character's personalities seemed to undergo a major personality change... quite a bit, going from shy and reclusive to public exhibitionists (and the excitement of desiring it and planning it). I really disliked the ending! Come ON Spears, your fans know you are a much better writer than that dreck at the end; major suckable (and NOT the fun kind)!
In the main book this is near the end, but in the bonus chapter... (which included a side character, Nolan, from the 1st Murphy Bros book, who also appears in subsequent books)... it's the focus of the chapter, as the MCs are checking off things on a sexual version of a "bucket list". Nope! Throws everything Spears has told us about these "reclusive" characters right out the window! Did not like this ending, at all!
It seemed about a 180° turn from their perceived private love lives, to the rest of the storyline being about planning sexcapades, and the way the characters treated each other seemed very different from the main part of the book.
The bonus chapter was an odd read; it just surprised me and saddened me, as their personalities seemed to have changed to something more "Hollywood flagrant", replacing their original somewhat hesitant private interplay with each other.
Also, I have to agree with another reviewer's POV as well: "Who, in his right mind, finds someone obviously choked and nearly drowned on a beach in December, freezing and wet and just brings him in the house, lays him on a bed (wet!) and leaves him there for 13 (!) hours just to wallow in his selfpity that now he can't be a recluse anymore????" (yeah, a selfish martyr-acting effing self-centered rocks-for-brains idiot!)
UPDATE: in re-reading, I'm editing my review of this book (Spears is usually a really fine writer and I love a lot of their books, like the "Murphy Brothers" series), I've decided to knock off a star because I didn't really like this book very much, after all. It was just...weird (and not in a good way). I still like Spencer Spears as an author though; hey, we all have our odd off-days/weeks, etc!
