The birth of the Ottoman state is shrouded in legend. Whatever the truth of its origins, the Ottomans formed an Empire which almost succeeded in bringing Christian Europe to its knees. During the last decades of the 13th century, the ambitious Osman Bey's tiny mountain state took eight frontier castles plus the Turkish town of Eskisehir. In 1299 Osman seized Yenisehir after working up the Kara Su valley. With this as its first real capital, the Ottoman state emerged into history poised above the fertile shores of the Sea of Marmara.

Like many, I have loved these Osprey military books with their research and beautiful illustrations since I first saw them (for me, perhaps four decades ago in a hobby shop). One of my primary historical interests is Islamic history, and these really do help to flesh things out in my imagination quite a bit. This text did not disappoint. Very good. Wish I had allllll of these books. I have had the successor edition to this on the Ottomans for almost twenty years, so I'm glad to finally get this.

Prilično dobro napisano, što je za Ospri već standardno. Sažeto i nabijeno podacima, koji bi mogli biti od koristi našim istorijsko-fantastično okrenutim piscima. Pored odlično opisane strukture osmanlijske vojske, najzanimljivi su mi bili povremeni detalji o vazalnim srpskim jedinicama. Tako se navode vizantijski i drugi neturski izvori koji kažu da su Srbi u bitkama imali običaj da nose crne oklope. Jedan izvor je Porfirogenitovog vremena (sad nisam siguran da li se baš on navodi kao izvor), koji kaže da se Srbi bore sa takvim i takvi oružjem, u crnoj odeći, dok više izvora navodi da su u Bici kod Ankare pod Stefanom Visokim učestvovali "crni oklopnici" i to kao pešadija. Ovo je inače prvi izvor gde to nalazim, pošto se do sada navodilo da je despot Stefan predvodio odred od 5000 konjanika.

Türkçe metinde, çevirmenin alışık olduğu Osmanlıca sözcüklerin (müsadim, müteşekkil, tevarüs, vb.) yerine günümüz Türkçesinden karşılıklarını kullansa ve bazı ölçü birimi ve terimlerin (funt, lamel, vb.) Türkçe karşılıklarını açıklayan bir küçük sözlük olsa çok daha başarılı bir çeviri olacakmış.

İçeriği uzun bir dönemi özetleyebildiği için net ve açıklayıcı. Editoryal olarak da oldukça başarılı (tek bir kelime hatası var, Alman yerin Alan yazılmış)...

Ancak ilk baskısında (ve orjinalinde) Osmanlı Orduları 1300-1774 olan isminin ikinci baskısında Osmanlı Orduları 1300-1768 olarak değiştirilmesinin gerekçesini anlamlandıramadım.

Any time David Nicolle and Angus McBride team up to write a book, I know it'll be good. The overview of the Ottoman forces is, by necessity, brief and only lightly touched on, but it serves as a good starting point for further study. The illustrations are, as always, exquisite and fabulously detailed.

Good, but not my favorite Osprey Men-At-Arms book. I would have liked it better if the maps, pictures, and drawings had been placed closer to where they were discussed in the text. As always with Osprey, a good combination of information, color plates, and other illustrations.
