A chipmunk searches for someone to sing along with her in this celebration of true friendship.
Chipmunk spends her days sitting on her rock and chirping her song—sometimes it’s happy, sometimes it’s bittersweet, and sometimes it’s very sad indeed. When Chipmunk goes off to find a companion that will sing along with her, she encounters some bumps (and pine cones) along the way, and finds friends (and harmonies) in unexpected places.
A wonderful book! A chipmunk living a lonely life alone with only her songs for company. This concept can be related to many readers who have a hard time making friends. I liked that she was brave enough to go seek for new friends when she decided that she wanted a new friend to sing with. It’s good that the author showed readers that what we wanted don’t always come easy. Chipmunk wanted a friend but the friends she found weren’t the ones she looked for. And that might be a reminder for kids to pick through who they can be friends with, bullies versus nice people.
This book started with chipmunk who lived on a rock. She loved to sing and her songs were happy, bittersweet, and sad. Her rock was a good listener but she wanted a friend to sing with. She went out to search for a friend but found friends for her rock instead. Luckily, an unexpected someone, a raccoon, came to help chipmunk tug away rock’s new friend. They became friends. Both of them couldn’t pull this new friend back to rock and they sang their song together with frustration. Then along came…
Chirp! is a cute book about wanting friends and finding friends where you least expected it. I just loved the illustrations! The page with all three animals trying to pull the log was funny! Their poses were so cute and hilarious! I like that the animals didn’t give up and just said let’s find something else. They continue to try and try again. It’s good for little readers to see that if these animals can try and try again and eventually succeed then maybe they can too. An excellent book with good influence for kids and I highly recommend everyone to read this book!
CHIRP! is petite sized, like it's adorable main character. Chipmunk loves to sing about his feelings and he's grateful for his friend rock who is an excellent listener, but longs for a friend that interacts more. The plot itself was a little lacking in originality for me, but there are things I really enjoyed about this book. I love how music and feelings are depicted - how they relate to one another and how feelings of all kinds are part of life and okay. I also absolutely love the vibrant illustrations. An adorable little book about feelings and friendship will lots of fall vibes.
Chipmunk spends her days chirping on top of her rock. Her songs can be happy, or bittersweet or very sad. Her rock was very good at listening, but didn’t sing along. So Chipmunk set out to find a new friend. She found a pinecone that she scooped up and brought back to where the rock was waiting. But the pinecone was also a listener and not a singer. So Chipmunk set off again. She found a log that she thought would make the perfect addition to her group of friends. The problem was, Chipmunk couldn’t move it. So she sat in the log and sang a sad song. Raccoon heard her singing and offered to help her move the log. But even with both of them trying, it wouldn’t budge. Chipmunk and Raccoon sang a bittersweet song together and Moose heard them. With Moose’s help they managed to pop the log free and it rolled right next to the pinecone and rock. Chipmunk still spends her days singing, now though Raccoon and Moose join in too.
A search for friendship makes for a poignant look at how it can be a struggle to find the right friends. At the same time, Chipmunk never gives up on her rather silent friends, framing it instead that they are good listeners. It’s a charming take on loneliness. The bridge of music to share emotions and find new friends weaves throughout the book and brings Raccoon and Moose into the story where they share their voices too. The ending is lovely and satisfying.
Magoon’s illustrations convey Chipmunk’s emotions with colors and movement. The pastels of happiness, the orange and dark moments of bittersweet feelings, and then the blackness of sadness that still has some light within it. The forest setting of the picture book is shown in lovely small details of ferns, grasses, leaves, rocks, dirt and light.
A book about finding friends who truly hear you. Appropriate for ages 3-5.
Simple and meaningful...just like a heart-filled song.
Chipmunk spends her days on her favorite rock, singing all day long. Sometimes sad songs and sometimes happy ones, and while she doesn't really have any friends, the rock is the best listener. But it's not really enough, either. So, she goes on a journey to find some friends.
This is a gentle book through and through, and yet, it holds a strong message and leaves an impact. Chipmunk is such a sweet creature, and the singing makes her so endearing. The first pages have her alone on her rock singing, and it sets the perfect cute yet melancholy stage. When she journeys out with the desire to find friends, it's impossible not to feel for her and root for her every step of the way.
The text is well placed and great for young listeners either as a read-aloud or alone (for those with a bit better handle on their words). The illustrations are as gentle as the text and bring across the scenes and characters well. Listeners can follow the tale on their own by flipping through.
Many listeners can identify with Chipmunk, since everyone feels alone at one time or another. Her courage to reach out and find friends is inspiring. Even the idea that you never know who will be your friend is there. It's encouraging, offers hope, and leaves a smile on the face.
I received an ARC and found this to be such a cute, touching tale.
Chipmunk chirps all day. Sometimes happy songs, sometimes sad, but she wants a friend to listen to her. On her search of the forest, she finds a pinecone and brings it home to be with rock (where she lives) While Pinecone gets along with Rock, and is just as good a listener, neither sang along, so off she goes to find a friend. This time, it's a log too big to move, but a raccoon comes to help, hears her song and sings along, so does a moose. Maybe Chipmunk is looking for the wrong type of friend.
Scott Magoon's illustrations are really cute, and the story is sweet. AJ noticed right away that Chipmunks pinecone and rock weren't things that can really be friends, and was so glad the raccoon and moose found Chipmunk. We also talked about songs sang a happy song and a sad song.
Chipmunk has a lot of songs to sing, be it day or night, with emotions of all kinds. Thankfully the rock she lives on is a great listener... but lately she's been yearning for a friend that can sing along with her. On a journey to find some friends for Rock, she meets some new friends for herself, too-- Raccoon and Moose, two companions that can talk and sing back with Chipmunk! A sweet story of using your voice, listening, and balancing between the two.
Chipmunk longs for a friend and spends her days chirping out a song. Her rock is a great listener, but not the kind of friend who will sing with her. So, Chipmunk heads off to find a friend. Along the way, she encounters loneliness and defeat but continues to sing. Will Chipmunk find the friend she has been searching for? In a heartwarming story of perseverance and friendship, Chirp delivers a charming, sweet story and shows the rewards of true friendship and never giving up.
A lovely gentle picturebook about being with your feelings, being brave about going out and finding friends, and the value of sharing being with your friends. The illustrator had to think hard about how to draw songs about feelings, and ended up using the concept of "synesthesia": where the senses get mixed, and sounds/words/feelings can be seen as colors and patterns.
A book about finding friendship. Sometimes you need a listening ear, but other times you need someone to sing your sad song with you. Chipmunk sings many different songs, some happy, some sad, and even some bittersweet. But these songs become richer when Chipmunk finds friends to sing with her, and a few more friends to listen.
Squirrel's search for a friend to share their song with begins with a rock and a pinecone who are very good listeners but not so interested in singing. So squirrel ranges farther afield. I like how the "listeners" are appreciated for what they can give and how squirrel's songs run the gamut of emotions. Illustrator Scott Magoon can do no wrong in my opinion.
Chipmunk loves to sing. She chirps all the time, day or night. Her songs reflect her feelings: happiness, sadness, or frustration. But she gets lonely and wants a friend to sing with her. So she goes looking for one. And she finds a pinecone to join her at her rock, but pinecone can't sing. Chipmunk then wants to add log to her group of friends, but she can't move it. Raccoon hears Chipmunk singing and comes to help, but even together they can't move the log. Can Moose help move the log? Will Chipmunk ever find a friend to sing with?
Swenson's story of looking for friendship in the wrong places rings with truth. Yet Chipmunk succeeds in finding a friend. This sweet story is a powerful reminder of how friends can be found in the most unexpected places and unexpected ways. Magoon's digital illustrations highlight Chipmunk's sweet nature and heart-rending songs. I especially enjoyed the way he turns Chipmunk's music into color and patterns. A sweet story about sharing what we love with our friends.
A cute book about a chipmunk that loves to sing, and how she finds friends that are good at simply listening, and friends that can add to the "song in my heart." The illustrations were creative in how they depicted music coming from Chipmunk in addition to the music's tone and feeling.
Chipmunk sings for her friend rock, then pinecone. She finds a log, but she can't move it. With the help of raccoon and moose, soon the three woodland objects reside next to each other. And the best part, they listen and her animal friends join in sining.
The illustrations are wonderful but the story is really random. A chipmunk sits on a rock and chirps all day long but longs for friends. He finds a pinecone and a log and along the way meets a raccoon and a moose and they end up sitting and singing songs all day. Just not my cup of tea.
Funny and sweet. Kids will get the giggles when the chipmunk expects the rock to sing along with him. I can see it used to discuss friends not having to look the same and other S.E.L. lessons. The part with the log could be used in an elementary school science lesson.
Really cute illustrations, but the story is sort of weird. It was hard to understand what the chipmunk really wanted---a friend? a bunch of inanimate objects? to sing a song? Not sure what his real goal was.
Chipmunk sings the song, and the artist depicts her songs with beautiful and vibrant colors. She tries to find a friend to sing along with her, but she keeps finding inanimate forest objects like a rock and a pine cone. I loved the colorful illustrations and the happy ending.
I love the illustrations, and the story is super sweet! I especially love the admission that the song in our hearts isn't always happy, but that friends will still listen and sing along.
