Hi, I’m Lola! I’m a book lover with a *slight* romance obsession. My books are all steamy romantic fantasy or paranormal romance, and there is always a happily ever after.

Well it starts promising, but around half way it starts spinning it's wheels and getting a little garbled and repetitive.
Henley is a wolf on the run from evil abusive alphas. She's 21 and been abused since she was 8 because of her special power. She ends up in NY hiding out as a lone wolf. But of course NY has a wolf pack so of course they sniff her out eventually. AND of course the alpha wants to mate her. AnDdddd, of course the evil alpha will keep trying to get her back...
I liked the MCs. Except i wanted to smack Henley with a skillet for the entire second half of the book. The plot devolved into:
h, "I hate alphas because of my history of abuse. So i will never mate you"
H, "That's OK, i am patient, you are MINE. In the mean time I will keep beating up all the horny wolves that can't help but want you because of your special snowflake status"
h, "You are so hot. If another fem wolf touches you I will end her. But don't let that get your hopes up because I will never mate you"
H, "No worries, because I will protect you by having guards watch you that are invariably incompetant so you will get punched and stabbed and strangled over and over."
h, "I am alright with you having people guard me even though my first instinct will always make me run away so the bad guys can catch me."
rinse and repeat
...I tell ya, I skimmed from 53% til the end.
The ending was a cliffhanger of sorts, with no resolution of anything except that the worst of the bad alpha's gets his just desserts.
Some of the world building was confusing. I'm still not sure what constitutes mating...
I'm giving this read a 2 1/2 star rating. Now I did enjoy the storyline and characters, what I didn't like was hen our H. Like most H's this one had a horrible backstory and a reason behind the way hen acted, but the author went on and on with our h's trama, and then instead of our H growing from it, it held her back making her ugly, manipulating, and just down right horrible. Our H justifies the bad decisions she makes, and horrible petty things she does because she's been hurt. And the sad true fact is these ppl are nothing like those horrible other ppl who've hurt her. But our H doesn't care about anything or anyone but her and her constant crying and feeling sorry for herself. I'm the victim! I've been wronged! Whoaaa is poor fu**** me! You can't wear ur scars like a bad**** while being just as horrible as those ppl who have hurt you!
The storyline was decent, however, the h and H were constantly going in circles. The cliffhanger at the end was intriguing and had somewhat saved the book.
The worst feeling is finishing a book and thinking “I will never get that time back”
The best way I can describe what went wrong is that the book promised a lot and never delivered.
Starting with the main relationship, I was never able to fully invest in it. The whole thing is supposed to be that this guy isn’t like other Alphas and wants her for who she is and not what power she has... except he literally says he caught her scent and knew she was it for him so that’s not true. It’s even more annoying because this point is exaggerated by a plot device that didn’t add to the story and wasn’t needed.
Next in regards to the main characters relationship to other side characters. They weren’t really fleshed out and for one of them in particular, the relationship was inconsistent for no apparent reason and had more so to do with what the author wanted to happen in certain chapters instead of what was actually happening in the story.
Then we get to the world, which usually I couldn’t care less about as long as we get the bare minimum. This takes place in modern day NYC and nothing was ever really explained nor were there consequences. This whole pack is living in a giant sky scraper in the middle of the city and we never know why? Like, why are over a thousand werewolves living in the middle of the city when it’s acknowledged that the city isn’t a good “habitat” for them and they could easily be based upstate. Also how is the pack super rich? And what happened to all the packs who’s alphas were killed by the love interest? I know this is a series but I have a feeling these were things ignored because the author didn’t want to deal with them rather than them being things to go back to later.
I just wish things were more purposeful and meaningful. This book was 400 pages yet it felt very surface level and underdeveloped, like a Wattpad story I would’ve read 8 years ago. Things that you would’ve thought important to the story were mentioned in throwaway lines and then scenes that were repetitive (like multiple girls day out and bar tending scenes) took way too much space considering how little happened.
Wow! Proof you can't judge a book by its cover! Cause lets be real this cover is weird.
Exceptional world build and storyline. Incredibly exciting. Some shockers are included. Great secondary characters. And an ending making you race to book 2!
Roman is perfect. Sexy, smart, caring, and possessive. Carefully crafted by Glass, you feel like you know him. There is such a connection I felt immediately. Roman takes in Henley's past traumas and shows such great amounts of understanding and patience. He never gives up because he knows she is his.
Really good FMC. Henley is one of the most traumatized FMCs I have read. Now the refreshing part is her past has not made her a victim. She is strong, cunning and tough. The only thing missing for me is her fighting ability. However, I believe more is on the verge for Henley!
Great series! Super glad I ignored the cover and picked this one up!
2 unimpressive inconsequential stars The premise was a winner & the sample was interesting. Sadly, the story deteriorated as it progressed. The fact I found the h attitude petty & contrary helped move the rating even lower. Although the reviews for book 2 seem to be promising I’m not convinced it’ll be worth the effort after such an abysmal attempt at world building & character development. 🤷🏻♀️ Pass.
Pet peeve. Torture (not overly descriptive or detailed) Ended in a cliffhanger.
Waste of time regret not reading the reviews first.
I have to get this off my chest. I like strong women. The type of inner strength and endurance woman are known for. Not the women who think if they beat on their chest like Tarzan they are as tough as men physically. Please. Women are not stronger in the physical sense and I'm glad this heroine was obviously not that way by talking tough and acting tough. However, she is stupid. Why would she constantly put herself in danger? To prove she's dumb? Well lets check that a hundred times. Seriously, I wanted someone to just kill her at moments and get it over with. The saying is true, play stupid games win stupid prizes. I can't believe I hung on til the end of this massive disappointment. I guess I thought there would be a happy ending or even a resolution to this idiots piss poor choices. Not at all! She deserves to be tortured because she clearly rejected a new beginning that offered her peace. I'm over this storyline.
The series has five books but I only read three of them. Book four and five are spinn offs with other Female leads, who we already get to know in the main series.
The review is about all three books and will be copied to the other books to.
I liked the main and side characters. Henley is a wolf who prevents other wolves from shifting. She was used and abused for this ability after her mum and her pack was killed, when she was eight years old. She was taken by a pack and they held her until another pack would kidnap her and so on. But finally she could free herself and went to New York to live under the radar. That worked out good, until she is found by the alpha of the New York pack. But he is different. Instead of abusing her, he offers her to become a member of his pack, protect her and even pays money for staying for a year. Henley agrees.
The first three books are about Henley and Roman. How she meets her mate but do not want to mate him, because she has a lot of insecurities. A lot of strange things are happening and her abilities differ from the abilities of the other wolves. Henley and Roman investigate a series of death. Which lead to more questions about Henley's heritage. And then they found out what she is and that she has to mate the only other wolf who is like her, but he is a jerk and abuser. She fights for her survival even though she is deadly ill. And Roman fights along with her.
I liked the series, and it was a solid three stars read for me. I liked how the other female wolfs drew Henley out of her shell and became good friends to her. She managed to build a chosen family.
There's more sexual tension between my toaster and a piece of bread than this. The pacing of the story reminds me of a wattpad story. The plot is mostly left dangly and it feels more of a weekly "what shall the characters do in this chapter".
I really tried to finish it, but it was killing my already low reading libido.
A huge thank you to Lola who provided me with an eARC!
First thoughts: Henley is a sassy badass. I love her ‘I own myself’ vibes. I want her hair and to share a pizza with her while she mixes some fancy alcoholic beverages. 😂
This fast paced debut novel was a dramatic and exciting read, filled with action and sexy shifters. It contains a lot of past trauma discussion involving abuse and neglect by alpha males, with some brutal fight scenes so I’d recommend for mature readers only.
Being set in the modern world of New York, Henley Clark finds herself brought into a pack who’s Alphas (yes, a male AND female alpha!!) claim they want to protect her for her unique gift. Wolfsbane was the name given to her at 8 years old as she is the only werewolf who isn’t forced to shift at night; she brings that same relief to whichever pack she is apart of, therefore leading her to have been hunted down by many previous alphas who haven’t treated her as more than a means to escape their nightly shift.
There were some awesome characters, both male and female with a range of personalities and lifestyles. I enjoyed that in this world, the take on shifters included a male AND female alpha, and in the pack Henley is apart of, abuse of a female is punishable by death by their alpha, Roman. It also showed a different side to the traditional take with not every werewolf being trained to fight or guard, they had the choice to basically just go about their life in modern NY.
There were a few gaps in information, but that’s to be expected with a fast pace novel. Overall I really enjoyed this novel and I will be picking up the rest in the series as they’re released! ☺️
This world has an interesting take on the wolves. The wolf is almost a different person inside, with separate emotions. They have “true mates,” but can imprint on someone else if something should go wrong. They live in packs in houses together, have alliances, and a council. I liked this world-building.
I was honestly astonished at how much I loved this book. It definitely became an instant favorite. If all shifter/werewolf books were like this, I might become a fan! There were so many great parts of this book. There were times that I just died laughing. This book is a must read for any paranormal fan and for anyone that loves alpha heroes.
And let’s not forget how hot this book is! The author didn’t hold back on the sex scenes. They were great.
I have to say, Ms. Glass, you did a fantastic job with this book. I can’t wait to read the next in the series and beyond that, you have a new fan. I would read anything you wrote.
The premise of the story sounded good. The execution of the story was not. The heroine was annoying and the part that every unmated males wanted her wasn't explained except she smells good. Awful heroine with I was abused so I am going to treat the h/alpha like trash. Doesn't even appreciate how she was paid or treated nicely by the h. The constant push and pull or flirting with other guys of the heroine made her unlikable. The way the heroine was constantly being hurt got old too. What a whiny, weak, and unlikable heroine. Too immature writing style in my opinion.
This is a first where I am not rooting for the heroine to end up with the h. Don't care for the heroine and the storyline so this was a DNF.. hard passed. The book cover definitely fits this heroine and not in a good way. First time and last time will be reading this author.
This was a pleasant surprise of a book. And one of those books that allowed me to see past some of the tropes that usually put me off.
This is pretty much a pure PR book, in that the only plot is the romance between then two characters. Usually I prefer the Urban Fantasy style plot/romamce ratio, so I was somewhat impressed this held my interest, as it's quite long.
I think there were a couple of reasons this impressed me. Firstly, the author manages to do the damaged and tragic heroine trope in a way that doesn't feel gratuitous and isn't too 'woe is me' in her attitude. Henley had a pragmatism about her I could get behind.
Secondly, Roman, the love interest was done very well. The author mentions at the end of the book that she rewrote his character to make him not the typical ubet alphahole werewolf male, because that's not the sort of man Henley would ever fall for, given her past. This was the strongest element of the book, for me, as he felt like a much more well rounded and genuine character just because he didn't always conform to that trope.
It is cheesy at times, and the attacks on Henley get a little tiresome, but it's not too annoying.
If you are a PNR fan and like werewolf fated mates books, but want one that feel less cheesy and with a male character that isn't a characature, then I'd recommend this.
I devoured this book. It is a beautiful mix of hot shifter romance and trauma recovery. The main character, Henley has been through some terrible things, but when she's accepted into the New York werewolf pack, she finds friends, and perhaps even a new family. While plenty of questions are left unanswered (leaving me DYING for book two), there is no doubt that Henley has found a new place where she can become the woman and wolf that she was meant to be.
I really loved how the author created a believable urban pack. The needs of the wolves that had to be met were addressed, as well as the customs that would develop with shifters who have a pack mentality. There was just the right amount of wild brutality mixed into all of the pack interactions, both amongst just the New York pack, and when they have to interact with other packs.
And the romance. Sigh, the romance. I adored Henley and Roman together. Their relationship is developing in a way that speaks to a future lifetime of happiness together built on true trust and devotion, not just single-minded lust. I cannot wait to see more of these two as they continue to learn each other's pasts and build a life as a pair.
DNF - quit at 70% I really tried to finish this, but by 70%, I just couldn’t do it. I was just done. The flow is horribly slow, it seemed to drag on forever with not much going on thru half of the 70% I did read. There is really no world building, just bare bones for background, NYC for the location, but nothing is really explained. There’s a lot of plot holes or things that aren’t helping the plot, or don’t make sense. If your going to change the common lores about werewolves, it needs more info dumped into the story to explain it away. I also couldn’t comprehend werewolves living in the heart of NYC in a skyscraper, it just didn’t make sense. The characters are flat. I didn’t understand them or learn enough about them by 70% to make me care about them. Henley is so hard to like, I don’t find her to be a strong character, but a severely troubled character. I had a hard time appreciating her with tendency for self-preservation at the expense of people around her, or she has befriended, or starting to care for. The relationship development between her & Roman also didn’t seem believable, I just wasn’t buying it. Not going to continue with the series...
At my age (approaching 60), life is way too short & my time is too important to force myself to read a book I'm not enjoying, especially when there are so many other books out there waiting to be read.
This book is not worth the read. The heroine is one of the most annoying heroines I’ve ever read. She has been through a lot and that’s understandable, but she blames that on everything she does. When will she accepts that the people she is with are not the same people she use to be with. Ughhh I’m annoyed that I’ve spend time on reading this. I did like the hero though he had patience and was overall a nice dude.
I love shifter books and this one started out great, I love all the characters till I don’t...the ‘wo is me’ just gets old then 200 pages later it’s annoying. The other annoying is you have a Victoria secret supermodel as her bodyguard and she is a pack enforcer yet she can’t fight and gets drunk while on duty....
I love that it's not your typical insta-love werewolf story. I love that the Alpha doesn't use his power to get what he wants. I love that the female character can take care of herself. I love that the pack lives in the city and not on a huge piece of land, like a cult compound. I'm looking forward to finding out what happens with the Alphas of All. Awesome job, Lola! I read a TON of books, and this is different.
I have to admit, I had whole idea for this review but I lowkey forgot the name of the main character and that says much more than whatever review I was gonna write… that being said, I prefer the other series by Lola glass…
1/5 stars, listened as an audiobook. Oof, this was a tough one to finish. Super inconsistent character behavior which drives me bonkers, and I feel like there was no real conclusion?? FMC made me want to pull my hair out by the end. And good lord if I had to hear one more time that her hair was red not pink I was ready to throw my phone off a cliff.
