Romance, clean, period; series, but stand alone read
Phoebe and Franklin's story was a genuine, sweet, reflective, and fun story. There is a bit of drama in one of the back stories, but I loved the family setting, where they were more 'relaxed' than in society. This felt like a story of neighbors and friends.
Franklin's home, the restoration, finding staff, and his family backstory made for a great character, and nice setting for parts of the novel. His introspection about what happened in the first book of the series, along with his current situation, made for a natural, genuine character and perfect for his highlight in this novel. Loved his love for his horse, and his partnership with his animal, and the fun part that the racing played. Franklin and Phoebe were nice foils for each other. Franklin who sees Phoebe's genuine, fresh, lighthearted personality that she displays when in her families company, and with her friends appeals to his sensibilities and his heart.
Phoebe's young heart, trying to find her way in her local society, and figure out if her past romantic notions are 'real', disappointed in the other interest she has, is pleasantly surprised and genuinely admiring of Franklin as he joins their family on occasion, seeks help and advice, and they naturally see each other. Strong side characters, and beautiful settings, genuine, honest main characters, and a beautiful attraction for each other made for a lovely read. I found the other side back story of the kidnappings a bit over the top, but the rest of the story was so sweet, and genuine, it didn't matter. A nice addition to this series, and my favorite of the two of them. Lovely read.
I received an ARC from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for a fair and honest review. My opinions are my own.
