Rosamunde Scott was born on 22 September 1924 in Lelant, Cornwall, England, UK, daughter of Helen and Charles Scott, a British commander. Just before her birth her father was posted in Burma, her mother remained in England. She attended St. Clare's Polwithen and Howell's School Llandaff before going on to Miss Kerr-Sanders' Secretarial College. She began writing when she was seven and published her first short story when she was 18. From 1943 through 1946, Pilcher served with the Women's Naval Service. On 7 December 1946, she married Graham Hope Pilcher, a war hero and jute industry executive who died in March 2009. They moved to Dundee, Scotland, where she remained until her death in 2019. They had two daughters and two sons, and fourteen grandchildren. Her son, Robin Pilcher, is also a novelist.
In 1949, her first book, a romance novel, was published by Mills & Boon, under the pseudonym Jane Fraser. She published a further ten novels under that name. In 1955, she also began writing under her married name Rosamunde Pilcher, by 1965 she her own name to all of her novels. In 1996, her novel Coming Home won the Romantic Novel of the Year Award by Romantic Novelists' Association. She retired from writing in 2000 following publication of Winter Solstice. Two years later, she was named an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE).
A wonderful book for any Rosamunde Pilcher fan. 160 pages of full color photographs of locations from both her life and her books, featuring appropriate quotes from her novels throughout. Simply lovely.
Beautiful book but not what I was expecting. I had no idea that this "memoir" was just a coffee table book with pretty pictures and the bare minimum of details about her birth and marriage. There were snippets from her books but I wouldn't call it a memoir. Disappointing. 2.5 stars
"The World of Rosamunde Pilcher", a gorgeous book of high quality photographs, takes you to the locales in England and Scotland that inspired Pilcher's novels. The book includes autobiographical information, a few recipes, and quotations from her works that are matched to the photographs. The settings include the rocky coast of Cornwall, windswept beaches of Scotland, fields of heather, English gardens, country cottages, and beautiful castles. I have never read any of Pilcher's novels, but I can tell she has fabulous taste in her settings.
Note: Goodreads has combined two different Pilcher books here. Most of the other reviews are about her early book "Another View".

4.5 🌟 It was absolutely wonderful to read and absorb all of the Rosamunde Pilcher beauty in this book! Not only the gorgeous photography, but also her beautiful writing. It was a joy to see photos of her and her family and learn more about her life. The quotations from some of her most popular books are paired with landscape or photographs of homes. I can’t tell you how comforting, soothing and uplifting this book made me feel. I only wish it shared more information about Ms. Pilcher and her life. 😢
When I was in my twenties, I read and loved several books by Rosamunde Pilcher. I read Winter Solstice a few Christmases ago, and the timing couldn't have been more perfect. I’m planning to slowly re-read her other books, as well as to read the ones that I never got around to. This coffee-table book is a delightful collection of photos, quotes from some of her books, as well as interesting family history.
This is the home that Rosamunde and Graham built in 1955 near Dundee, Scotland. “There was a large garden, with a tennis court and a small swimming pool, and plenty of space for children, grandchildren, friends, relatives, and dogs and cats.”
Here are some of my favorite quotes:
“I have always thought that you don’t know a man until you have seen his home, his books, his pictures, the way he fixes his furniture.” – “The End of Summer”
“Marriage is like a job. A long, difficult job and both partners have to work harder than ever before.”
Gorgeous book of photographs, both vintage and modern. They picture the locales in England and Scotland that inspired Pilcher's novels. The book includes autobiographical information, a few recipes, and quotations from her works that are matched to the photographs. The settings include the rocky coast of Cornwall, the beaches of Scotland, fields of heather, English gardens, country cottages, cozy interiors, and beautiful castles. I tried to read one of her books but found the heroine insipid and couldn't finish it. The photos do make me want to go to some of the locations though.
Was beginning to think I jinxed the weather by having recently read Rosamunde Pilcher's Snow in April. Rain was trying to turn to snow. At moments it would be snowing at back of the house, when I made it to the picture window it would be back to raining.
The World of Rosamunde Pilcher is a delightful read separated into sections on Cornwall, London, and my favorite Scotland. Loved how it had pictures of places with inspired book quotes. Even a few recipes from Rosamunde Pilcher's Kitchen: Scones, Dry Martini, Potato and Leek Soup.
Following some brief biographical information, this is a collection of photos of the areas Rosamunde Pilcher lived that she used as the basis for her novels. With the photos are quotes from many of the novels as they fit with the photos. This makes me want to go back and re-read the books now that there is a clear visual of the settings.
A beautiful photographic journey of Rosamunde Pilcher's homes and gardens during her life. I loved reading Shell Seeker and Winter Solstice and wanted to find out more of Scotland. Pilcher describes the homes and landscapes with detail in her books, I compared my imagination with photographs and descriptions of the beautiful countryside. Scotland is now on my bucket list of trips.
This is primarily a picture book divided into several different sections. These sections provide small maps, a few words, quotations from the author's books and beautiful photos of the various areas. A beautiful read that shows where Ms. Pilcher obtained much of her inspiration for her stories.
A lovely book for fans of Rosamunde Pilcher. It provides photographs that evoke the same emotions as the lovely descriptions of Scottish landscapes, seaside villages, and country houses in her books (if somewhat less intense).
It is amazing how closely her books followed her real life experiences. It was neat to see photos of so many places she described in her books. Now I want to go to Cornwall and places in Scotland to see the beautiful coastline, cottages and gardens for myself.
I expected this to have more written by Rosamunde about places she's lived or lives. Enjoyed the chapter on buying the bank house and the photos and snippets of her family history but this book is mostly unrelated photos of areas she has lived with quotes from her books.
I loved the photos and personal information. My wish is that it had more stories and quotes from her life rather than book quotations. I have read all her beautiful books and really wanted to know more about her.
What a visual delight! In addition to illuminating the world of Pilcher’s life and novels, it also showed pictures of St.Ives, which figured prominently in The Secret Book of Flora Lea, which I was in the middle of.
This is a collection of photos of the regions that are the settings of Rosamunde's novels. The photos are beautiful and are interspersed with quotes from her writing. Lovely!
This book is a feast for your eyes and a balm for your soul! It is filled with gorgeous photos and lovely excerpts from Rosamunde Pilcher’s books and stories.
