A young Alaskan Indian boy gets the chance of a lifetime to go with Dr. Sheldon Jackson on an expedition to rescue Yukon gold miners. But is this really his ticket to fame? Ages 8-12.

This is on a person I haven't really heard about before—Sheldon Jackson. He worked with the US government to help develop Alaska and also had a desire to help people, especially Indians in the area, and started several schools for them. The story's plot revolves around the gold rushes of the late 1890s (including the Klondike) and the adventures of Sheldon and Adam, an Alaskan Indian graduate of his school, through the winter snows and grimy mining towns of the arctic area. Good lessons in how Adam messes up things through pride, self-centeredness or disobedience, but learns to follow instructions and unselfishly consider his own Indian people and how to help them, instead of attaining personal fame.
