In the town of Stillwater, that’s not just a promise.
It’s a threat.
Join superstar writer CHIP ZDARSKY (THE WHITE TREES, Daredevil) and Eisner Award-winning artist RAMÓN K PÉREZ (Jim Henson’s Tale of Sand, Jane) as they dive into a world of horror and intrigue in this new ongoing Skybound series.
Chip Zdarsky is a Canadian comic book artist and journalist. He was born Steve Murray but is known by his fan base as Chip Zdarsky, and occasionally Todd Diamond. He writes and illustrates an advice column called Extremely Bad Advice for the Canadian national newspaper National Post's The Ampersand, their pop culture section's online edition. He is also the creator of Prison Funnies and Monster Cops.
Dan West receives a hand-delivered letter from a little old man in a bowler hat summoning him to the town of Stillwater to receive an undisclosed sum from his great-grand-aunt’s estate. Having recently been fired with nothing but time on his hands and a need for cash, it’s the perfect time for a road trip! But what is Stillwater - and why has no-one heard of it…?
Stillwater #1 was the first Chip Zdarsky-scripted comic I didn’t totally hate! It’s tough to get into at first because Dan is such a shitbag of a main character: he’s fired for hitting a colleague, he fights (and loses) to a club bouncer, he fights (and loses) to a cop. So he’s overly aggressive, stupid and, given how crap a fighter he is, a glutton for punishment - not loving the guy! Doesn’t help that he talks in that douchey-chatty way that too many Zdarsky characters do.
I usually love Ramon K Perez’s art (Jim Henson’s Tale of Sand is terrific, if you’ve not read it and want to “read” a brilliant silent comic), and it’s fine here, but he’s not given anything terribly interesting to draw. It’s all ordinary stuff - normal people, small town; nothing eye-catching. The last panel of the little boy sitting on the ledge though was memorably creepy.
Still, I loved the Twilight Zone-esque quality the story develops slowly as the comic goes on. People at road stops have never heard of the town, there’s no phone signal in Stillwater, and then things get really weird. Zdarsky immediately diffuses the mystery and seems to lay most of his cards down on the table but I’m hoping there are more surprises in store later on in the story - it’d be a shame if this was all there was, particularly as what there is so far isn’t that remarkable a story for a series.
It’s not a bad start for a new title though and I was into Stillwater #1 for the most part - looking forward to where the story will go next. If you’re after a decent horror/mystery comic, this is worth a look.
3.5 stars. Picked this up because of Zdarsky. Man I didn’t see this coming. Our main character Dan gets a random letter speaking of a great aunt of his passing away and leaving some stuff for him. So him and a friend head the the small town of Stillwater. Once they get there, things instantly take a turn for the worst. I mean like 0 to 100.
Dan West is an unlikable guy who has just been fired from his job. He gets a letter from an old man that says he just gained inheritance from his great grand aunt but he needs to go to Stillwater to receive it. Stillwater is a town that no one seems to know about except the people that live there, and they have some secrets. This was a decent first issue even though it felt like Zdarsky gave too much of the plot away. We get met with a big cliffhanger at the end so I guess I'll buy the second issue and see where this leads.
The script is quite simple but with an original touch, a basic idea that serves as a starting point for what is seen as an interesting series. There are elements of very classic Gothic literature from the beginning of Stillwater by Zdarsky & Pérez #1, which leads me to think that there will be many more, which will not only be a series of horror, blood, violence, and paranormal elements, but also a story that will explore philosophical and social themes. Fans of Stephen King rejoice! Horror comics have found a new champion and his name is Chip Zdarsky.
Daniel West is going nowhere fast. He’s a cocksure burnout with a short fuse and a penchant for finding trouble in all the wrong places.
But when a mysterious letter arrives from an estranged relative, Daniel thinks he’s hit the jackpot. All he has to do is travel to the small town of Stillwater to claim his inheritance.
It doesn’t take long for Daniel and his best friend Tony to realize that Stillwater is far from what it appears to be. The townspeople are protecting a dark secret, one which they’ll kill in order to protect...
I really only checked this title out because it shares a name with my hometown. However, it is an interesting, if not typical, horror story premise but the ending left my curiosity piqued enough to want read the next issue when it's available.
