Extensive History of The Romanov Dynasty
This was an all encompassing history of the Romanov Dynasty in Russia. Quite an interesting account of the Romanov's through the course of history. I knew much of the history but learned a great many things from this book. The Romanov's seem to be a typical family with a mixture of personalities, styles of leadership, and level of mental illness that led to many tumultuous times during their reign. It seems as if with each new emporer/ess the country's political and economic stability swayed from one extreme to the other extreme. It is easy to understand the upheaval of the economic well-being and psychological health of the Russian population during this lengthy reign by the Romanovs. It is no wonder that the Russians were suspicious of and paranoid when there was a change in leadership. The lack of some of the Romavov's to accept change and move forward to a better life kept the Russian citizens in a state of turmoil and not knowing what might happen tomorrow that could drastically change their lives from one day to the next. It is no wonder that they didn't trust outsiders when they couldn't trust the internal workings of their own country. I imagine it is much like what the US is currently experiencing with our political conflicts. You don't know who to trust so suspicion and paranoia reign the day. It was quite an enlightening book and one that I would highly recommend.

Surprisingly, the Romanovs came to power not long after Ivan, the Terrible died. The Romanovs came from Ivan the Terrible's wife, Anastasia Romanovna. After his beloved wife died, Ivan became violent and unhinged. He even beat his son to death and killed his unborn grandson. After Ivan's death, there was no obvious leader. Thus, Russia sank into the Time of Troubles. False Dmitrys (successors to Ivan) abounded and the country was in chaos.
The boyars (leaders) got together and chose Michael Romanov. The Romanovs would lead Russia for the next 300 years. This is another excellent publication by Captivating History. There is an excellent explanation of serfdom and how it worked in Russia. Over the centuries, many things changed in Russia but the serfs and slaves became the permanent underclass of the country (with no way out of that group). The fact that there was never any alleviation of the caste-system the serfs were doomed to, created the seeds for the eventual destruction of the monarchy.
The story is fascinating and well-written. I read it in a single sitting because the story was so compelling.

If one can keep the different family lines of succession straight, this would be a much more enjoyable read. Nevertheless, there is some good information to be gained by reading this historical overview of Russian monarchy. One can understand how Russia was to become the first Marxist run government by the way the Romanovs and previous dynasties ruled. Thus, allowing for a dictator like Lenin to take control in 1917.
