“You do realize that my name hasn’t changed to Fiancé, right?” Fiancé asks, and I feel like this is a trick question so I just give him a sweet smile from where I’m sitting at my desk, my feet on Fiancé’s chair.
He just smiles at me. “I honestly didn’t mean to slingshot an edible bra into your eye.”
“Wait until our mother hears about this,” I say.
His expression plummets to horror. “Don’t tell my mom!”
“Come here, Leland,” Henry says as he pops his trunk. “I have a really neat gift for you inside the trunk. Do you enjoy neat gifts?”
I beam at him. “I do!” He pushes me and when I don’t fight against him, he seems confused before just pushing me the rest of the way in and shutting the trunk.
“That was weirdly easy,” Jackson says from outside the car. “We should have done that instead of me stealing his phone to get in.”
“The thing is,” Henry says as he walks with me, “I just can’t stop myself from wanting to hang around and watch you guys. I think it’s this strange curiosity about what will happen, and I can’t tell if I’ve hit my midlife crisis or if I’m suffering from memory loss.”
As the side of his jacket lifts just a touch, I can see the hint of a gun at his side and my love for him explodes. He squeezes my hands as he leans in.
“I wore it just for you.”
“I love you so much.”
How can this man know me so well?
Henry sighs again, which makes me smile. I’ve always wondered how we’re able to con him into our crazy ideas.
