I have a love/not love relationship with this series. One one hand, they are quick, easy reads. On the other they are irritating. Story lines jump around, some are just boring (and I skip over the fluff that just leads nowhere) Yet I still keep downloading them - thankfully I don't pay for them because they are included in my Kindle Unlimited subscription.

The first half of this book was so poorly written it was actually irritating. There are a million short, choppy sentences, enough sentences that start with “but” you could make a drinking game of it, and boring Emma stuff that makes you want to just stop reading. The reader is lectured, Emma drones on and on about the same things, and there’s some shitty perspectives on therapy and other women’s choices with makeup. I made over 50 notes on this book with my thoughts on a lot of this, so if you’re interested in reading those, feel free.
That being said and with this being the 6th or 7th book releases this year by AJ Rivers, I’m really wondering why they’re being written at this pace. Rivers can write well, as evidenced by the previous books and the last third of this one, so why was the quality so diminished in this one? Too many in a short amount of time? Is Rivers forcing these out of herself? I don’t think so, considering that elements of what makes these good books are there- the mystery, the intrigue, but there’s a lot that doesn’t make sense. Poor writing style, the characters saying things that are out of character, things that just don’t seem like they were thought about at all. Perhaps timing plays a role but I am left to wonder what the hell Rivers’ editor is doing because it’s clearly not editing. A lot of discrepancies about how characters act over the course of 8 books should be picked up by the author and the editor, who should also be checking the thousands of short, banal sentences that fill so many pages of this book.
Truthfully, I was thankful for the end of the series with book seven and was not expecting this one. I read it and I fear we are on the same path of Emma wanting to investigate a personal mystery and not coming to answers over 7 more books in this “season” where someone will be obsessed with her, she’ll use luck and instinct to solve more cases, and uncover something huge, dark, and sinister that no one else thought of.
Will I read book nine? Hard to say. Has Emma jumped the shark? If not yet, then she is gearing up to it. Can we please let Emma rest, relax, and have some happiness? Can we write a new female heroine? So many questions and if I know AJ Rivers, we’ll have some half answers to them in several more books.

OK, I am confused, I thought I read this was the first book in a new series, one that was a spin off of the Emma Griffin books and now on here it is listed as number 8. So, without having read any other books in this series, I was easily able to start with this book. I immediately loved this book and the writer's style. Emma is great as a main character and I especially like how strong she is. Readers get told enough to figure out about Emma and what has already happened without being redundant to readers of earlier books. Bellamy and Eric are great as back up and the perfect choice to go on the vacation with her. I still am in awe that none of them think that 3 was an odd number for the prize, I sure would. I also was waiting to see if they or at least Emma was suspicious of winning the vacation, it just seems too much of a coincidence. The ending is great! Very satisfying but leaves no doubt that this story is not over. I cannot wait to read more of this and will go back to the beginning. There is plenty to like about this book and it's full of adventure. I really liked that Bellamy and Eric do not treat Emma like she is crazy and tell her to drop it but instead just jump in to support her and follow her lead. Very well written.

A little disappointing

I usually start off my reviews with this author and this series with a slam dunk. Not this time however. I feel that in the past books, the main character, was strong and fearless. This book made her seem fearful and dependent. Also, it was so much build up to the main event, that when you finally get to it, it is rushed. I won't be giving up on this author but hopefully it will be better next time.

The Girl In Dangerous Waters

A good thriller to read. Emma Griffin once again finds herself in a quest for justice as she vacations on an island resort that is not at all the paradise that it first appears to be. Follow her as she encounters the beauty of the island but soon finds herself confronted by the worst of crimes as she fights for her life while struggling to save others.

I didn’t realize the continuation of these books would come in seasons, like seasons of Emma’s life. Makes total sense why there’s like 30 books in this series, AND IM HERE FOR IT!!

Loved how this really picked right back up and all though some of her past has been solved, it doesn’t bring her comfort or safety. There is still more to uncover! Yay!

“Just because a story may be hard to believe, doesn't make it any less true. Stories are passed down for generations. They turn from stories into lessons.”

The Girl in Dangerous Waters — A.J. Rivers, 2020
(Emma Griffin FBI Mysteries book 8)

Oh, to win a week-long all-expense-paid vacation for three to an exclusive island resort in the Caribbean. I still wonder how was she really chosen for this dream vacation, tho. Was it luck or was it planned? Only Emma could get involved in a case while on vacation, unraveling drugs and human trafficking, and murder, then ended up needing a vacation from her vacation. And then there’s this dark cloud of some whackadoodle stalking her, a creepy creeper who let’s us know exactly how obsessed he is with our Emma, as the new cliffhanger drops at the end.

Love this Series but.......

I love this series and have read every book in it. However, I have one gripe. There is too much Sam. It seems like Emma can’t make a move without involving Sam. It makes her look too dependent, the exact opposite of who the character is supposed to be. *Mild Spoiler* I expected Sam’s presence to be minimal because he wasn’t included on the trip. Then, somehow he still ended up at the resort.

The whole series is great.

I love Emma's power of observation. How she picks up on little things and then puts them all together to ferret out a nefarious plot, and then solve the crime. I like to try to figure out who the bad guy is, before I read it, but I'm always wrong. I can figure out some of the plots, and this gives me hope! I have read most all of her books. Now, on to #9.

I like to pretend that I am Emma’s friend Bellamy because, well because who wouldn’t want a kick-ass FBI agent as a bestie? Delusions aside…. the first book in this series captured me with a two day read and I’ve managed to work through the rest of the series at a good clip.

Emma is strong AF, determined and driven in a way that many of us with traumatic childhoods are. She has a lot to prove, mainly to herself. I’m fairly sure she is an enneagram 3w2 but hey, we’re not supposed to type our friends.

The Girl in Dangerous Waters was a welcomed move away from the Leviathan saga of the past seven books. I feel like Rivers did I great job wrapping up (for now?) that piece of the story, most pointedly reconnecting Emma with her long last father. With Ian back and safe, it appears that Emma is ready to start building her life.

While Emma works to put her career aspirations into focus she finds herself in need of a break… enter a girls weekend with Bellamy. Munchies and a last minute trip to the market lands Emma with the unexpected gift of winning the stores drawing for “the vacation of a lifetime on Windsor Island”.

Emma’s schedule is free as a bird but Sam’s (hello dreamy boyfriend) is not so bestie Bellamy and bestie-adjacent Eric get the honor of going with Emma to the exclusive resort. Can we just pause for a minute…… How many of you are fans of NCIS Los Angeles? From the second that Bellamy and Eric appears in Emma’s story I pictured them as Nell and Eric, the adorable eccentric nerdy tech couple from NCIS LA. Anyone? I thought so!!!

Ok, so in true Emma fashion, her sleuth nose and crime-fighting DNA leads her straight into a who-done-it at the resort. Think murder, drugs, sex trafficking and very angry ocean spirits. And then there’s that creepy creeper who let’s us know exactly how obsessed he is with our Emma, giving himself an opening to “see you in the next book” which I’m starting as soon as I post.

Wrapping things up here… It wouldn’t be a truthful review if I didn’t add that the end to all things Emma’s past was a must for me to continue with the series. Well planned or just lucky, Rivers conclusion of that part of Emma’s story in book seven was a relief. It’s not that it wasn’t well written/carried through, it simply had ran it’s course in my humble opinion.

Warnings: Cult, blood, death.
My Rating: 4.5 stars

This one can be read as a standalone as it is the start of a new background mystery that doesn't appear to have anything to do with the previous one in the first seven books.

Dangerous Waters starts with Emma still dealing with what happened at the end of book seven. But we also see her getting the chance to go on an all-expense-paid trip to a private island. Sam can't go because of a case he's working on so instead she takes Bellamy and Eric with her.

At first, everything seems great, but after a while, Emma starts to notice some weird things about some of the people at the resort and then a body shows up which puts her into full investigation mode. Of course, Bellamy and Eric help out as much as they can, but they can't do a lot until Emma actually has evidence of things happening because of being in international waters.

"There is too much darkness out there, too many people getting away with brutalizing others and destroying lives for me to turn my back now. I'm not done yet."

Overall I liked and enjoyed this one. It was nice to see Emma in a different setting and to see her actually relaxing for a little while, even though that didn't happen for long. The way that Emma see's things and just knows when something is wrong is always fun to see happening. She pieces things together so easily it seems like, but really it's just her being observant, and being able to tell when people are lying or not. I'm interested to see where the next book takes us because we're going to be back to 'regular' life somewhat and I have no idea what is going to happen next.

The ending of this one was a little strange because it seems like Emma once again has a new stalker of some sort.

Book Review: The Girl in Dangerous Waters by A.J. Rivers ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This book starts a brand new mystery for Emma Griffin. While she is trying to figure out her next move in her career, she wins an all expense paid trip to a remote island for 3 people. When she gets there, someone is found dead on her third day. Then it is all about trying to find out what happened. The police are saying that she slipped and fell, but Emma is not buying it. We are taken through her investigation and learning more mysteries about the resort. This trip makes her realize her true desire when it comes to her career, but she doesn’t realize that just because she leaves the island, doesn’t mean that the trouble won’t follow her. Now starting the next one!!

I enjoyed reading this book, but I hadn't read the other books in the series. The first section of the book contains spoilers so if you're interested in the series, read the other books first.

Emma wins a trip to a luxury resort. Her current boyfriend can't come so she brings 2 friends instead. Although it's a gorgeous resort and the employees are happy to help, something seems amiss. Then things start happening - like a body floating in the pool. Emma is FBI and she can't let it go.

I enjoyed the book and the writing style of the author. I think I may go back and read some of the earlier books in the series even though I've read some spoilers in this book. The subject matter is for adult audiences, but I think mature audiences will enjoy this book.

Three stars

A brief synopsis: As Emma is being pressured to take time away from the FBI she finds out she has accidentally won a sweepstakes to relax at a resort on a secluded island. Quickly after her trip begins Emma gets the feeling that something is off at this resort. When a woman is found dead in the pool with some questionable wounds and security is all too quick to brush it off as an accident Emma decides it’s time to start asking more questions

My review: This was a pretty good book and a super fast read. I like the direction Rivers’ went with this installment of the series. I’m excited to see what happens next in the series

Emma Griffin FBI agent here to save the day. Figure out what happened and piece the mystery puzzle together.
Rivers did an awesome job with this story. Just enough action and mystery to make readers question everyone's motives.

Hello Goodreads Family, I gave the book 4 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Emma Griffin Series Book 8 was pretty good. She is an amazing FBI agent although she is not actually active at this point with the bureau. Nonetheless, the story line was a little bit mundane but it started to pick up during the middle. For some reason criminal murder cases seem to follow her but like always she figures it out and puts the criminal in Prison/Jail. She is also a tough woman that can fight and kick ass at the same time. Hopefully, Book 9 will be just as good as the others in the series!! 😊📕

Some vacation

Another great read in this series by A J Rivers. Emma can’t even get away with her two best friends on the tropical paradise vacation she won in a drawing from the local grocery store. In fact, she had no idea she had entered a drawing.
Once Bellamy, Eric, and Emma arrive at the beautiful island, Emma immediately senses something isn’t right. To find out what that is you will need to read book 8 in the Emma Griffin FBI Mysteries series.

Detailed writing! Great ending. Anxious to see what happens next!

I waited for this book to come out. When I first started it, I was a little disappointed because it moved so slowly; unlike her previous books. But, oh my, it got interesting real fast. Only Emma could get involved in a case while on vacation. The writing was so detailed that I felt I was right there with her. The ending floored me! Now, I'm anxiously awaiting the next book! Who is that mystery man?!

Emma is at it again!

Emma has a mind like a computer. She has focus and ferrets out the tiniest details. But she doesn't know how to turn if off. It continually messes with her private life. I'm not sure how she keeps such loyal friends. And now she's diving right back into the pool. Don't you wonder how she was really chosen for this dream vacation. Who is Dragon? What's coming next?

Awesome mystery series!

This entire series kept me sitting on the edge of my seat. Kudos to Ms. Rivers and her ability to make me unable to lay the book down. I have so enjoyed reading about Emma and Sam and all that has transpired in getting to where they are now. As always, I now anxiously anticipate the continuing book to come soon. If you enjoy hair-raising mysteries, you won't be disappointed with Ms. Rivers' writings.

Finally, a AJ Rivers, Emma Griffin novel I loved! This is book #8 in the Emma Griffin series and I thoroughly loved it. Raced through it, and stayed up until the wee hours of the morning to finish it. The ending was a bit confusing....who is the man on the roof??
Books #2-7 just were so confusing with the various story lines and references to I suppose, previous story lines, and I was having a very hard time remaining engaged. This novel, #8, is set on a deserted island, at a resort and held my interest all the way through. I highly recommend this book.

Emma and her friends win a vacation to a beautiful island resort only to discover more murder and mystery. I feel like I am hanging onto this series only because I am attached to Emma and Sam. This is my second least favorite book in the series so far. It is written really well and the characters really do draw me in, but this one just kind of fell flat for me. I will try her next book with an open mind and hopeful heart and hope my mood toward the series changes.

Great Mystery Series..

A good mystery series is hard to come by. I have read Book 1 through Book 8 and I have found each one hard to put down. As I finish one, I have another to continue reading. This author is gifted to be able to continue each book without losing the attention of the reader while continuing the story of Emma.

It's a good thing I am now retired so I can prop up my feet for an afternoon of reading. Keep up the good work A.J. Rivers!

I am hooked on this Masterful story teller!

Spinning out another thriller in book #8 and once again wrapping it up by dangling just enough to push you right into the next one! AJ Rivers you are amazing! I love how brilliant yet human Emma is. I love how Rivers intertwines bits and pieces and uses them again later! This book was a little slower but I know it is going to be crucial to the next book. Enjoy!

After powering through books 1-7 in a 7 day span of time, this one was a bit slow for me. The story line changed from the first 7 books so it’s understandable that the plot needs to be rewritten but it took longer than I’d like. One the story thickened, I was not expecting what was unveiled at the resort to be unveiled and couldn’t put it down until I finished the book! Strong finish for a weak start!

These books are page turners for sure! I will continue this series as a guilty pleasure and quick reads in my busy life! This book was different in that it was almost a stand alone book rather than tying in to the previous books. Emma Griffin kind of reminds me of Nancy Drew and perhaps that is the draw the nostalgia of a good mystery that quickly gets wrapped up in 250 pages or less :-) Just starting on the next book in the series!

Vacation?

Oh to win a all free vacation. Was it luck or planned. Emma, Eric and Bellamy head out to take advantage of the win. Impressed with the accommodations, weather they start hiking over the island. But then with a number of things happening Emma goes into FBI thinking. She solves some mysteries and save some workers. She was relieved to head home. What did she solve? Interesting reading.

Well. Another chapter in the Emma saga read. The author proclaims that she gets enjoyment and fulfillment from writing these tales of derring-do, and I am happy for her.

I do intend to keep on with the series, despite my oft-thought “oh no, now what” mindset as a new cliff-hanger drops at the end of each new book - but that’s just me.

Emma is headstrong, taken with actions that make no practical nor operational sense, yet remains engaging-for the fantastical imaginesi amongst us readers

#8 in the Emma Griffin FBI Series is another good one. Bellamy comes for a weekend and Emma wins a trip for 3 to a secluded private island. It's the perfect opportunity for Emma, Bellamy, and Eric to spend some time together relaxing and not worrying about a case. Of course, that doesn't last long before Emma starts investing a mystery. A private island, murder and mystery awaits in dangerous waters.
