Politics, racists, and profiteering are the focus of the Academy now

As the Misfits come back for year two they find everything has changed and none of it for the better. As Isaac’s uncle becomes the headmaster and institutes changes that restrict the non-human and scholarship students so much that they leave. As the Westdrift empire is gearing up for war, Jack and the Misfits find themselves right in the middle as the Dixon’s racism won’t let them let go of their hate for a half dwarf.
Talia’s family has problems too and the team decides to see what they can do to help. Shock and awe through overwhelming magical power works well as they demonstrate their new levels of mana.

On the positive side, Jack finally meets his father and there’s a surprise there too. Willmarth the Selkirk dragon asks that they help him save the dragons that will perish in the empires’ war.
Which it turns out the Dixon’s are a big part of. And Mage Nowak returns for their help and ends up helping them even more by sharing ancient dwarven tablets that grant interfaces.

Fun and unfortunately current

A power hungry human regime focused on wealth and power taking over and pushing out foreigners? And they're called Quarnon? Love it, made it really easy to appreciate the reflection of our times, and hope for a future.

Author continues to use main characters (Jack, Lana, Talia and Stann) as punching bags, blackmail, robbery victims, etc. It is obvious that the author is the main enemy to the main characters. Author spins stories, from empire, from academy, from Isaac and the rest of the corrupt, depraved, greedy antagonists to rob, injure, arrest, try to kill, Jack and his retinue. Author has little or no ethical values if he creates main characters only to sacrifice, torture, kill them in his books. If author treats main characters in this way, imagine how he treats his family and "unloved ones"?
Fantasy novel series should not have been called Darkthorn Academy, because since the first semester, Jack and his retinue of Misfits, is no longer going to the Academy. In the second year they didn't even assign any courses. If author created a story about the Academy, then author should have based it on students that actually go to that academy, and not on the drop-outs and scavengers that only went to that Academy for a semester.
Author continues to chain Jack, to a weak, indecisive, wimpy personality. Jack continues to leave bandits alive, the corrupt sheriff in complete impunity and hasn't even talked back to the Dixons. Author should recommend that Jack and his retinue read and watch all of Mario Puzo's Godfather series to start. Weaklings being meat shields, punching bags and sacrificial pawns to antagonists is not a worthwhile story to read. It is not entertaining nor is it fun to invest in a group of main characters that because of their lack of character, their lack of courage, get beaten at every turn by an author that does not value them or give them any chance to come out on top and overcome.
Author uses side characters Chadwick, Tolliver, Talia's family, as blackmail pawns to pressure constantly the main characters.
The only character that is a role model and never backs down is Lord Scratches (Willmarth) the dragon. Maybe author should have Willmarth teach Jack, Stan, Colin, Lana, Talia, etc. about character, courage, perseverance and justice. To each their own, and the author has been unfair and the worst enemy to the main characters in this fantasy novel series.

Alert

First, my review: “This was a fun book. I am glad that I read it. You should try it too.”

Second, I am not a bot...at least I don’t think I am. Yes this is copy pasta (just learned that term, so fun!) simply because I feel like any book I read deserves acknowledgement but at the same time my feelings on reviews conflict with the normal review process.

I enjoyed this book, so my goal is to promote it and help the author. If you are a potential reader, just stop reading now and take the above as all you need to know. I am not going to share my reasoning, thoughts on the book, or any opinions that would influence your decision to read it. It is my opinion that Art needs to be experienced at an individual level. You are the only one that can determine what you like and don’t like. Don’t let others make that decision for you. You should definitely read the book and completely ignore all of the reviews. Or not if you don’t think this book is for you. That choice is all yours and the beauty of art appreciation. You are a much better judge of what you will like than anyone here.

If you are a member of the IAK Guild (thanks, Jason) or part of the review police, feel free to criticize me and challenge my philosophy on reviewing art. I think we all love a good debate. The forums are open and I welcome your comments. I was wrong in my previous request to get you to stop. Your blatant disregard for that request has led to some fun discussions. Growth is important for us all.

Cheers

3 May You Forever Embrace Your Misfitness Stars

Scavengers is the second book in the Darkthorn Academy series by Robyn Wideman.

Scavengers definitely resolved a few quandaries I had with the previous book: Mainly the character backstories and development. We definitely were able to get more in touch with both Jack and Talia's families and origins. Although, Talia's family had minimal character development outside of the situational obstacles they were presently facing.

While, there was some improvement in multiple areas this book seems to have switched tracks and reveled new detractions in this work. Starting primarily with the overall advancement and plot of this book. Besides learning to utilize mana cultivation in their magic potential, ferreting out the unsavory asprirations of the MM, and running into Mage Nowak there is no definitive plot arc depicted here. This book comes across solely as the information gathering to lead to the true action in the next book. Which isn't always a poor layout for a series. I do, however, feel the Wideman missed the mark in this instance.

Finally, the conclusion of this story was overtly rushed in comparison to the pace of the bulk of the novel. When the Misfits faced off against Travis in Buxon the situation was resolved far too smoothly. This was further exemplified in the following experience breaking back into Darkthorn Academy where they seemed to breeze through all obstacles in their path. There was a minimal show of resistance during Jack's specific encounter, but this group seems to always magically escape far more easily than their experiences should lend them the ability for.

Add in the minor inconvenience from the grammatical/spelling errors, and I can't in good faith rate this book higher than three stars even though I'm truly enjoying this cast of characters and the intriguing magic system. We see our first touches of cultivation, and technological influence within these pages.

This coming book should be interesting as they try to requisition the Ancient Lands for their own purposes, and utilize the knowledge and abilities of their allies combined forces to fight back against the potential for tyrannical regime.

A lot better than the first part. I was debating wether to continue the series or not, but found myself positively surprised.
The setting changes from the academy and we get to explore more of the world. More characters get added - of which not all but most are well written. And most importantly, the logic holes and missing background knowledge gets filled out, explaining why the Misfits get mistreated as they do.
I found myself surprised with Jack‘s character growth. He becomes more confident in himself and learns how to roll with blows that life deals him. Not just the passive victim taking everything head down, he takes action and becomes an active Mc.
The plot takes an unexpected but welcome turn. In the beginning I was worried it would be another round of senseless abuse and the missfits struggling to stay at the academy, so the author‘s decision to go into a different direction and set up Jack as a rebel is very welcome. A little training arc here and there, but there is more going on than in part 1. I don’t get why some people are complaining about boring plot or low stakes - its actually the opposite. Instead of staying at a school with very questionable standards, Jack tries to find his own path in a world that rejects him. People just need to understand, that this is not a Harry Potter plotline, in which the protagonist progresses through academy years and slowly gets stronger. This is: Jack against the system. And the first real step is being taken in this book.
There are still flaws of course. The missfits power is still a bit unrealistic, the relationship between Jack and Lana feels over-sanitized and in terms of dialogue and personalities, while better, doesn’t reach the level of top series in the genre. ( I noticed Talias and Lanas names being confused with each other, which really shouldn’t happen.) This is more like a barely 4 stars. Despite the flaws, this time I am genuinely looking forward to the next part. The author finally seems like he has a plan as to where to take the story.

The second book of the Darkthorn Academy could not hold the high level of the first one.
The characters are still likeable, the story told is not deep but fun
But: Things are too easy for the characters. Money - no problem. Mentors - no problem. Need somone who buys your loot - here is your own dealer. Wanna learn alchemy - here are your rare ingredients garden, Wanna learn blacksmithing - here is your forge. Need to be better in magic - why not having a pet that can teach better than any academy lector?
As i said - too easy.
One thing that i liked in the first book is that the author took time to tell a story - this book i have the feeling he has a certain goal in mind and therefore takes the mentioned shortcuts to cut the middle story.
He also tries to tell us a lot of background stuff in dialogues - and that doesnt work well. Half the dialogues are not how normal people talk to each other. Meeting your father for the first time in my imagination would lead to sharing time together - not to going meditating and leaving so soon.
I still have high hopes for this series as it is fun but i also hope that the author finds back into his pace and rythm he had in the first book. And also that he thinks about about characters and how the relate to each other than just bringing forward the story.

Editing in it is still pretty bad. For instance Dear instead of Deer when speaking about the animal.

Editing aside, it is missing the enjoyable parts from book 1 which I thoroughly enjoyed. But the real deal breaker was when it turned into a cultivation novel. I’ve tried many cultivation books over the years and have just grown to despise them as it always becomes so boring. If I had seen it listed as Cultivation vs progression fantasy I never would have started it.

Other issues is that everything is just handed to the characters without them really having to do much work. Smithing, here ya go, your own forge. Alchemy, here you go a lab and a garden full of rare plants and manuals. Need a trade partner, gotcha covered

This is a very bad version of the concept of the 5th Harry Potter book. And that's my least favorite of the Harry Potter series too. The reason why that book could work the way it did though was because of the amount of stories that happened before that got you attached to the characters before. Like, I can't feel bad about staff getting fired when the staff have done nothing to this point. Also one of the best things about the last one was that the school wasn't actively terrible to students, but this removes that

I dropped this some I'm unsure if they did, but they should've just went to a different school the moment that the dragon classes were banned. why? because the previous book already said that's the only real special thing about the school. There are better magic schools around. also banned from ALL sophomore classes? Shit is just stupid

It's a young reader book. Fun,Simple, but over explained.

I enjoy the story for what it is, a young reader simple fun tale of a group of diversified individuals, in a fantasy world, coming into their own. I thought the story got a bit stale from book one, and the characters really don't get to decide their Fates it's just one event that forces them into the action of the next event. There was a lot of plot building and expansion of the world, which wasn't a bad thing, but it was way over explained every single action and thought of all the characters.
There really was no thrill or fear for any of the characters in the story although fun and simple is bland and worn out.

Great addition

Another great addition to the Darkthorn universe. This book picks up right where the last one left off, and follows the journey of the Mistfits on a wider avenue of education and more dangerous adventures. This book does a great job on exploring more of the Misfits backgrounds along with them being more confident in their approach to their lives. All in all great second book which leaves you quickly wanting the third book. Also love the new name for an already lovable character along with being one of the better edited books by Mr. Wideman. 5/5

Ok but...

Fast paced again but not the best written. If it had been properly proof read then I would have given an extra star but the typing errors are irritating. The story is fine but pretty standard and the attempts at humour are feeble. Too much dialogue and not enough story spoil the potential of a good read. And, if you are going to have a villain, don't have him turn up in the last couple of pages and get easily defeated. I get that this is a book for children but even so it could be better.

Isaac Dixon a rich snob uses magic to make Jack an his classmates fail final exam.

Jack works hard to attend Darkthorn Academy to catch up with the rest of the class .Since it's his first time ever attending any school at all . He makes some friends he studies hard in order to pass final exam .He does fine until last class in ethics class him an his all friends fail due to magic sabotage an have to become questers to pay for their tuition for the next semester or get kick out .recommend reading excellent series .

Fun story just some minor qualms

I've really enjoyed the storytelling so far in this series and only have minor issues with it. I'm a little biased because I always enjoy a good progression fantasy. They could use some additional editing though, some names get switched up here and there as well as some misused phrases but those are pretty minor. What bugs me the most are the meme references that really pull me out of the story.

Quite a bit of what endeared me to this series the first time around, the Academy plot, is gone from this book.

There was a lot of busywork throughout but at the end of the day, it boils down to them getting stronger with minimal risk and it felt like simply a setup book for the next in the series.

With that being said, I am excited about the next in the series, as it seems we're definitely going back to the Academy.

Wow what a clever read.

This is a real story! Do mot read if all you want is bloodletting or panting profanity n’ sex, but if fast action and magic and fighting with weapons and spell craft is for you. Read ! I like character development and scene changes with my magic. The most serious fault is spelling and grammatical mistakes. Please! Someone hire a reliable proof reader!

I'm enjoying these books; they kind of remind me of when my friends and I got together to roll-play D&D on the weekends.
Jack and his academy friends continue to adventure in the ancient lands for loot despite assassins and enemies in the imperial government. Lord Scratches has some surprises in store for readers, and I personally enjoyed them.
I look forward to reading more in this series, but wish they were available in physical format so I could add them to my bookshelf.

Scavengers: Darkthorn Academy Book 2

Wow! Wow! I can't wait to start reading book 3. Each book has gotten better and I'm not sure I can put my Kindle down when I start reading book 3. This is a very good series for teenagers that like this genre to older grandparents who enjoy this genre. Good writing, pretty good editing and very entertaining. Thank you for the hours of entertainment.

Great book!

This 2nd book in the Darkthorn Academy series continues a great story featuring the Misfits! A diverse group of younglings with a penchant for trouble, a love of good food, a cute dragon and some unbelievable luck. Definitely recommend if you like Gamelit and light LitRPG. Minimal game mechanics but they are a bit more intricate in this book. Looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

Ex-students Saving their Friends

The Misfits are nearly kicked out of school, but leave when the school turns into a military camp. They jump around helping others and the MC meets his father for the first time.
They return to the Academy to save the dragons and find that their teachers and friends have been imprisoned and tortured. Gotta make a prison break...

Fun read and exciting. Read in 3 days.

Exciting Story and Wonderful Characters

Loved some of the new twists and particularly many of our new characters. Hope they rescue the chef. The new training and improvement to mana is great. Looking forward to reading next book, especially response to dragons and most teachers disappearing.

I'm terrible at waiting

But when the wait is worth it I'm tremendously satisfied. Jack and his misfits and their adventures are truly amazing and I can't wait for the next one. I read the entire book in one night now I'm back to waiting.
Dragons and magic keeps me coming back for more.

This book is a!axing and I can't wait to see what happens next. The story was amazing and I loved the part where Jack meets his father as it is a very happy moment in the story.

One of the best parts was when they did the prison break and the teachers that helped them were rescued from the prison.

Good

Expands on the prior books themes very nicely. More lit rpg elements, which for me is a bit distracting, but the story pace held together all the same. A few editing misses but not distracting. You read this book for the good story, action, characters that are consistent, and the entertaining magic system.

Rousing Finish to a Sword and Sorcery Epic.

Ok It took me two days to read (1&2) some of the most exciting
fiction I’ve read in a while. Tho it’s young adult, so not
laced with sex, the relationships are strong. I must say good
theories about magic and fighting. Most will enjoy the read...

Book two

Mistakes: I found six scattered throughout the book.

Plot: After being pushed out of the Academy are band of misfits spend most of their time dealing with different family matters.

For the build up of how dangerous it is to scavenge, our heroes don’t seem to have any real problems.

Characters: Good growth so far. Looking forward to book three.

A fun developing story and plot

I’m enjoying this series quite a bit and looking forward to the third book. This one takes a bit of a turn from the first book that is quite interesting and starts introducing cultivation and more LitRPG elements - though exp and such aren’t considered. Still, I definitely recommend this IF you’ve read the first book, The Darkthorn Academy.

Intrigue! Excitement! Dragons! Even Romance!

The young magic students were thrown on their own this book as their nemesis gains power. But they have the best possible teacher in the form of a mini dragon who remembers the ancient ways. Check out the great plotting, the twists and gifts as different mages have their own strengths.

ISO: editor

While the story is good, it appears as though Wideman finds herself in need of an editor. The grammatical mistakes are very distracting and increase exponentially towards the end. That being said, I’m a fan of the story that was crafted here and do intend to give the series another chance.

Great even if you’re not an RPG enthusiast

I’ve never played an RPG in my life. I do have friends that play, so I recognize that these stories are based on game-type rules. I don’t need to know any of those rules to enjoy a rollicking good story with great characters that I can empathize with, though.
