A quick and easy palate cleanser, with witchy autumnal vibes and a non murdery mystery. I liked it.

I hate to give 1 star reviews unless the book is absolutely abysmal or I couldn't bring myself to finish it, so this gets 2.

The premise of this story was cute, and it started out pretty good! I wasn't expecting anything super in depth or world shattering, but it very quickly degenerated. The main characters were 20-something women, living on their own, but acted like teenagers. And I mean like 13 years olds. :/ They screamed, made demands, the whole story was riddled with overly convenient plot devices, and over all, the plot ended up being at odds with itself. The "super busy" B&B had 2 patrons throughout the whole book. The girls knew nothing about magic, but someone knew how it worked when convenient. The Aunt wanted to keep the kids safe...and did everything to not. When the MC "demanded" this or that, it amounted to the caretaker saying, "Oh, well, this is dangerous....and you don't really know anything about this world, but I guess, and I'm so proud of you!!!" Very weird.

Lastly, the GLBT+ "representation" was very poorly placed, so much so that it seems like it was almost added as an afterthought. The relationship between the two adults was fine, it wasn't written oddly in itself, but was...I don't know how to put it. Their relationship was fine, but how it was referred to made me feel like it was a bid for attention. A "Hey, look at this, they're still lesbians! Really!" type. The trans reference was even more oddly placed and so cringy too. I got big "I'd like to tell you Dumbledore was gay" vibes from it.

I read the first half of this book one one sitting (couldn't sleep) and it took me over a week to go back to it - take that how you will. I did finish this book (since it was short), and there were no glaring editing errors or anything like that, so it doesn't get the dreaded one star. I was so psyched about the idea of this book, it was just fumbled imo. :(

The bones of a great story are there, but it felt like another round of edits would’ve made for a stronger, more cohesive book. Not typos –videos polishing the plot and refining the characters.

This is book one of the Visions and Victims series and starts with the main character Selena Smith struggling in her new job as a barista. She lost the financial backing of her parents when she refused to train to be a doctor like them, but managed to pacify them somewhat by starting to train as a nurse, but failed to carry on. Now she shares a house with three other young women and works in a boring role she is not very good at, just to try and pay her bills. She has one friend, Jadis, who is into lots of things supernatural and reads tarot cards. When she is trying to make drink orders up, she comes across one she thinks must be wrong and calls out for the oddly eccentric looking customer, to check her order. The old woman is called Blair Williams and says she is Selena’s aunt! Selene finds this hard to believe as she thought she only had an uncle. Blair wants her to come up to the mountains and work at her bed and breakfast called Kindred Spirits. She seems to know a lot about Selene and both of her parents, even about her failings studying. Selene doesn’t know whether to believe her and says she’ll think about it.

She only has a couple of days as Aunt Blair will be going home on Sunday morning and that would be her only chance. She asks Jadis once she gets home and Jadis makes her shuffle and then split her tarot deck. From the cards she turns over, Jadis tells her this could be the opportunity for a new future and exciting opportunities. She tells Selene she should go for it and she would come as well if her aunt would let her, she is up for an adventure. A few of the things Blair says when Selene phones to accept the job offer, should have given away a few oddities about where they were going! When the girls arrive at Kindred Spirits B& B, they are introduced to the other guests and staff, Aunt Kiki Blair’s partner, a dwarf, a vampire, a pair of imps and a brownie are just some of the paranormal types staying at the B&B. While Aunt Blair has been away, the brownie, Fael, who is the housekeeper and cleans everything, has gone missing and no one can remember seeing her in days. When Selena finds a key the imps are trying to hide away, she gets a vision of Fael opening a door labelled 666! She has never had a vision before, but Aunt Blair knew she would probably have magic and this is her first indication of her abilities.

The four try to find out what happened to Fael, but she isn’t the only member of staff to go missing, as soon Emile, the Quebecois vegetarian vampire also goes missing. Selene continues to get a few more visions as they search for both Fael and Emile. Selena and Jadis’ most important job now is to find out what is happening and make sure no one else goes missing from the B&B. It certainly won’t be good for business if anything else happens, especially as they have a very famous guest, staying there after some cosmetic surgery. Their B&B prides itself on never revealing who is staying with them and never revealing any secrets about their guests, no gossip either! But someone or something is targeting people from the B&B. Now that someone, is targeting Selena and it seems they will do anything to get away with what they have done and want no witnesses to their actions. Room 666 isn’t supposed to exist according to the original architect of the hotel, but someone has secret methods of getting around! Selena’s introduction to the paranormal is a sudden one, with a very different car ride out, and then unusual staff and guests and an aunt with magic! A cozy tale of magical happenings in a quirky, paranormal setting. I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.

Selena is estranged from her parents, both are doctors and disappointed when Selena knows that nursing school is not for her and she needs to follow her heart and be happy her parents have cut her out of their lives
Moving to Denver she is now working in a coffee shop. Selena is struggling she is not enjoying her job, though the one bright side is her friend Jadis who she works and lives with in a shared house. On a particularly bad day when she is really struggling and feeling low, an eccentric woman enters the coffee shop claiming to be Selena's Aunt Blair. But that's impossible, Selena has no family her parents have no siblings, there had been an Uncle Bob, but he had died when Selena was a baby. Blair does know things that give Selena pause for thought, She asks Selena to come work for her at her B & B "Kindred Spirits" she has till Sunday morning to make the decision
Selena talks with Jadis who consults her Tarot cards, she encourages Selena to take the risk and go for it, and she will come with her, so Selena makes the phone call.....and so the adventure begins.

"Kindred Spirits" is not just any B&B in any old town in the mountains, no it is a paranormal B&B where the builder is a Dwarf who keeps a penthouse suite for himself, the building itself has a mind of its own and no-one is what or who they appear to be!
Selena has never felt more at home! Magic is real and she and Jadis are part of it!
On the first night, at the first meal (cooked by Kindred Spirits very own vegetarian Head chef Vampire Emile), Aunt Kiki raises her concern that the housekeeper a brownie called Feal is missing. When they set out to search for her things begin to happen and there are some interesting results

I am glad Lily Webb decided to leave Moon Grove for now, Zoe was beginning to get a bit stale so this is a bit of a breath of fresh air. some of the new characters are excellent, I love the imps Lox and Keez with their permanent tied tales and their own little secrets I think they will bring a lot of mischief to this new series
Though there are parts of the book I enjoyed this there are some things that missed the mark for me, the fact the girls just "accepted" everything that happens, and I am not just talking about the magic that they suddenly learn is true.. Some of the characters are perhaps a little too "woke" and miss the mark, there are so many things happening that is just accepted, I know this is fiction but the reactions are just not genuine and there are parts of the story that I struggled with, for example, how do you search for a person you have never met, nevermind a whole new species that the day before you did not even know existed and not ask for a description of what they look like? Not only that but how DO you search a building that you have only spent one night in on your own?
Then there is Blair's use of the endearment "love" as you read on it became progressively more and more annoying and overused.

The "mystery" itself is very clever and well thought out. I had the who but not the why sussed out fairly quickly and the conclusion is very good.

I am sorry that I have to give this 3 stars as I am a big fan of Lily Webb, and I will read the next book in the series with the hope that it improves as it does have potential.

This book is the first part of the "Visions & Victims" series, told in first-person pov by main character Selena Smith.

After disappointing her doctor parents by dropping out of nursing school, Selena is working as a barista and sharing a house with three other girls while she tries to sort out her life. Everything is boring and normal until an eccentric woman arrives at the coffee shop, claiming to be Selena's Aunt Blair and asking Selena to come work at Kindred Spirits, her bed and breakfast in the mountains.

Selena is unsure at first, but when her friend Jadis does a Tarot reading for her, which indicates changes in her future, Selena decides to take Blair up on her offer. Jadis tags along, and the two girls are soon thrust into a magical adventure. Kindred Spirits is inhabited by supernatural staff and guests, Blair and her wife Kiki are witches, and Selena soon finds herself experiencing visions. It's a good thing, too, because when the inn's resident housekeeper, the brownie Feal, goes missing, Selena's visions may be the only clue they have to finding what became of her.

This was an entertaining story. I liked that the mystery wasn't a murder, but rather one of a missing person. I appreciated the diversity of the characters, although I thought the characters could have been fleshed out more. Some elements of the story were obviously influenced by Harry Potter, which is fine, but it was somewhat distracting. The plot progressed in an orderly fashion, but it didn't flow as smoothly as I would have liked. There may be a budding romance between Selena and Jadis; time will tell.

The series shows some promise, and I wouldn't hesitate to read more of it. However, it was likable, not remarkable, earning an average score of three.

Although I'm generally not a fan of first-person narratives, Dead and Breakfast was a cute first-in-series. Overall an easy read. The characters had some questionable reactions and motivations, but not so outlandish that I couldn't shrug them off as their personal quirks.

There were two things which drove me up the wall, which seem to be endimic with many first time and self-published authors these days.

1. Misuse of I/me in the 'verb name and I/me' strucutre. (To authors: When writing 'John and __' drop 'John and' then see if I or me sounds better. For instance you would say 'She left me' not 'She left I' so the sentence would be 'She left John and me at the mall.')

2. Sandwiching the adjective 'myriad' between 'the' and 'of.' (To authors: myriad is an adjective which means uncountable. You wouldn't write 'the uncountable of lights' you would write 'the uncountable lights'; therefore, don't use 'of' after myriad. However, the noun 'plethora' - which means an excessive amount- is WOULD be followed by 'of' as in 'the plethora of lights.')

As to the reviewer who complained about the use of the pronoun 'they' when referring to a singular entity, that pronoun was considered singular up until the late 18th century, and grammarians who insisted it was stictly plural met with avid resistance, according the OED. Despite what may or may not be acceptable in style manuals (the manuals still don't agree), they/them/their continues to be used as singular pronouns in day to day speech.

Okay, end of grammar rant. 😉

The "villain" of the story wasn't too hard to pick out. The real mystery was in how the heros would catch them. I enjoyed the enough to continue with the series.

Selena is picking up the pieces of her life. She is having a bad day at her job, when she waits on a customer. The customer tells her she is her Aunt Blair, she would love it if Selena came to work for her. Selena never heard of her, decides to talk to her best friend Jadis. Selena calls her Aunt and if she is ok with Jadis coming with her, she will give it a try. Her Aunt is more than happy that she is bringing a friend.
Selena gets a wake up call about her family and apparently she has magic. They get to the her aunt's bed and breakfast, they find out someone is missing. Selena got a vision of a room that doesn't exist. The person that is responsible is still there and they have to figure it out before more disappearances happen.

I found this first book in this series to be entertaining, great characters that are introduced. Selena coming into her magic, finding her footing in the new world she is in. Can't wait to see what else is going to happen for Selena and the others. The pace of the book was at a great pace, you didn't know who was responsible until the end of the book. You will enjoy diving in this book.

Heather's Notes
This was a light and fluffy story, but not really my cup of tea. There was nothing horrible about the story, I just wasn't invested and didn't really care what happened to the characters. Also the world and magic was not really explained. I doubt I will continue the series.

Selena is not happy with her barista job and having an especially bad day when a woman comes in and tells her she is her Aunt Blair. The woman owns the Kindred Spirits Inn and asks Selena to work for her. Selena talks to her best friend about it and they both decide to accept.

Selena and Jadis arrive at the bed and breakfast which is not what they expected. This one has paranormal guests! And Selena discovers she has some magic and gets visions. So when a staff member of the inn disappeared, Selena uses her newfound vision abilities to help find the one responsible. Could it have something to do with the metamorph? Will Selena put herself and Jadis in danger? Will she find what happened and why?

This is a good start to a new series that I already am enjoying! I like the characters and seeing how Selena reacts to her new-found magic. Grab your copy and enjoy this new paranormal cozy mystery series!

When an unknown relative offers our heroine a job, she figures she has nothing to lose. Which might turn out to be true, but at the same time she gains some abilities that are going to take some getting used to.

This is book one in the series.

This is a paranormal cozy mystery. The story is well written with a lot going on. We get introduced to a nicely detailed setting and a diverse cast of characters. Our heroine also gets new abilities which she is learning to use while at the same time adapting to a new place and trying to solve a mystery.
It is a lot to take in and requires some concentration now and then, but the overall effect is a wonderfully fun story with plenty of mystery to keep you turning pages. Overall, I enjoyed this introduction to the series and look forward to more in the future.

Highly recommended.

What a good start to what looks to be a fantastic series. This is a paranormal, cozy mystery, that was a joy to read.

Written as a 1st person, single point of view with a completed mystery ending. Good, strong story line that had made me anxious to read more. Fantastic characters that are so likable. Selena, bless her heart, is learning things about herself that she never knew were possible, and we get to see the start of her journey in this book. Lucky for us, her story continues in the next books of the series. Amazing detailed descriptions that were so easy to visualize and such comical dialogue, that I couldn't help but chuckle along the way.

This was just a feel good, yet mystifying mystery, that was a good way to spend a lazy afternoon.

Would I recommend this book? Yes

Would I read more from this author? Yes

Dead and Breakfast is the first instalment in Lily Web’s new Paranormal Cozy Mystery series. I am a huge fan of Lily’s other paranormal cozy series so was super excited to read her new one, and I wasn’t disappointed! I loved this instalment, Selena and her BFF Jadis are delightful and I loved aunt Blair. Like I have said with respect to her other books Lily is very talented in her descriptive writing and because of this your pulled into the story right away. I read in about 4 hours, on Halloween which was fitting as the story ends on Halloween night. There were plenty of twists and turns to keep you guessing on who the culprit was. Overall this was a great paranormal cozy and I hope there will be plenty more to come. I highly recommend this series to all my friends. This was not your typical witchy cozy book...if there is one. There are witches, one who is Selena's aunt and she owns the Kindred Spirits Inn. Selena is working as a barista in Denver and hating it. When an old lady claiming to be her Aunt appears and insists that she come and work for her at Kindred Spirits,. Selena doesn't know what to think or do. With help from her best friend, she makes a decision and as they say...the rest is history. But in this case it is some mystery, paranormal, fun, spooky and very enjoyable book. I thoroughly enjoyed the story and as Lily Webb is so good at doing, making you always want more of a story, I look forward to reading the second book in this new series.

Great start to a new series. Not only is it fun but it grabs your attention and holds it through the story. So different from what I have been reading. Selena meets Aunt Blair, who she knew as Uncle Bob, who whisks her away in a flying car to a magical inn, that is teeming with paranormals. As far as Selena knew she was all human until she touched a key that gripped her with a vision. A missing brownie sends everyone on the hunt, that leads to other things. Ok, I am stopping, I don't want to give away the story. If you like paranormal books with a different twist this is definitely the book for you. I am eagerly awaiting the next book.

This was a funny, sweet, cute story. Loved it. Selena has had to make her way on her own after her parents disowned her. She’s been working as a barista for several months and still can’t get it down quickly. When a strange elderly lady comes into the shop saying she is Selena’s aunt and wants her to live with her at her bed and breakfast. Selena thinks she’s a kook, but caves into her friend Jadis’ conviction that this could be a good thing and they both move to the bed and breakfast in the mountain. And there they find out her aunt is a witch and the bed and breakfast caters to supernatural gusts. And after only one day there they have to solve the mystery of the missing brownie maid. and I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review

This is the first in a paranormal cozy mystery series. Selena Smith is working as a barista in Denver when a woman claiming to be her aunt comes in with an offer to join her at her bed and breakfast, Kindred Spirits. Selena and her best friend go, but soon learn that Starfall Valley is mo ordinary place. It's a magical community and Kindred Spirits caters to the paranormal. Selena also learns that she's a witch, just like her aunt. Dealing with visions and a mystery, Selena adjusts well.

I enjoyed this book which was a fun read with quirky characters. The book was fairly well written although the copy I have had a few errors. Overall though, it was a joy to read and I look forward to the next book.

Feeling she let herself down and destroyed her relationship with her parents. With her parents rejection she is starting all over on her own. While at work a woman arrives saying she is her aunt and wants her to come work for her. Taking a step out on faith Selena and her best friend decide to take up the job offer. Things go from night to day. A refreshing change of pace. This is a fast paced and non-stop action packed cozy mystery. I anticipate for the next book in this series to be great. Really liked this book.

Solid 4.5 star
What a wonderful start to this new series, I just loved all the characters and a bed and breakfast like no other! Selena is thrown into things right from the get go and as she tries to work out where Feal the brownie has disappeared to, learning she does have magic to a certain degree, finding out what real family is like and meeting some very interesting characters along the way. This was a fun and well paced read that left me with a smile on my face at the end and looking forward to Selena's next adventure with Jadis, Aunt Blaire and the others of Kindred Spirits Inn!!

Selena and her best friend Jadis decide to take up an invitation from Selena's aunt Blair to come and work at her inn in the mountains, and to see, if life there would suit them. On the way there they experience their first surprise, when the car suddenly starts flying. Blair then explains that she is a witch and her inn is for paranormal beings. With that Selena and Jadis start a crazy adventure with a missing brownie and mysterious happenings.
Highly entertaining, this story is a rollercoaster of fun and quirky from beginning to end.
I am definitely going to read the next book in the series.

Visions

You find that the uncle you were told died years ago is alive and well and now your aunt, do you accept the job they offer you in their Bed and Breakfast? Of course you do.

Selena is on the outs with her parents, thrown out of the house, and barely making it in Denver, so the answer is obvious. As her best friend needs a change, Jadis goes along.

There, the magic begins.

The story is cute, finding family where you believed there was none, the characters people you would like to get to know, and the mystery a bit quirky. A wonderful read for a snowy afternoon.

A new life

There are a few things in this book that caused me to pause and reread paragraph not the least of which was when I encountered the first use of the gender neutral pronoun and the account of the change from 'Uncle Bob to Aunt Blair. Despite this, the book was interesting enough to keep me reading until
the end. Many strange beings living together in a different kind of story.

Selena is down on her luck and hates working as a barista, but is doing what she can to make it after her parents cast her out for not finishing nursing school. Her Aunt Blair, whom she's never heard of shows up and offer to take her to Kindred Spirits for a new start. Selena learns she is a witch and has seeing powers. When workers start disappearing Selena and her visions help lead to who is doing it. Good world building.
