How to Catch a Crush #4

First Kiss with the Quarterback

Rate this book
She's on his campus to score a science scholarship...so how did she win the quarterback's heart?

This shy high school senior never imagined her first kiss would come from a college quarterback. But then again, she never thought she'd get kissed at all. Not anytime in this decade, at least.
Speaking to guys is definitely not Charlotte's forte. She's more of a data and numbers kind of girl. But when her friends convince her that this weekend-long science competition is the best way to get her lab partner's attention, she's ready to step outside her comfort zone and show her old friend that she's more than just a big brain.
Her first attempt at a flirtation? Not a success. But help comes along in the form of West, the college quarterback, a guy three seconds away from failing out...unless he can get a science geek to help him out. It's quid pro quo for the science nerd and the athlete. Until feelings get involved.
Now no one is certain who likes who or what's real and what's fake...least of all Charlotte. Isn't there some sort of experiment that could help her sort out the truth from the lies?
According to West, there is.
The details of this lab experiment? Well, it involves a first kiss...

Spanish & English Opinion :: 4🍭🍭🍭🍭

ESP ::

¡Me encanta!

ENG ::

I just love this series. The Lonely Hearts Club is marvelous. They are so different in personality and physical appearance but they love and support each other. Is an aspirational group of friends.

Their dream guys are also different but great and it just proves how tastes are not the same for everyone but they are still amazing.

Anything from Maggie Dallen always makes me feel with intensity but, from a pink perspective, which I love. It’s refreshing and so good for the soul.

West is a book boyfriend. Charlotte is hilarious and I love their relationship. The epilogue was WOW.

Every book in this series has been a hit. I really liked Charlotte. She reads like an aspie, and it was so refreshing. She's not given a label and there's nothing that says she is on the autism spectrum, but if diagnosing fictional characters is a thing, total aspie. I can relate to her wanting direct answers and conversations rather than skirting around topics. Similar to myself, she will often start to answer a question trying to be vague and waiting for the other person to ask for more information before giving it up.

West could not have been a better match for her. He had his own issues where he felt kind of dumb because he didn't always do well in school, but she made him feel smart and like he was capable of doing anything so long as people approached teaching him in the right way.

I loved getting to see a girl as smart as Charlotte appreciate a football player who many didn't have high expectations for. She recognizes that though she probably is the smartest person in the room that doesn't make other people less important than herself, and she uses her intelligence as a way to boost other people's confidence rather than making them feel inferior.

She starts off this book crushing over a guy named Robert. They are lab partners and have won a few competitions to get them into a bigger science competition in order to win scholarship money. They spend the weekend on a college campus doing a presentation and competing against several others. After getting in trouble with his RA, West agrees to take over as a chaperone for the event to be able to keep his dorm room. But skirting around that issue isn't his only problem. He is failing his science class, and if his grades slip, he will lose his football scholarship. He's not first string, which I thought was pretty cool to see because usually characters are presented under the best possible circumstances. Yet, we can totally see that he is confident and on his way to becoming first string quarterback once the current quarterback leaves. Therefore, West is adored by others, especially girls. His ex Stella was a science geek. And I liked getting that bit of information because I knew that there was a possibility that he could fall for Charlotte since he's already been in a relationship with someone who is more scholarly than himself.

I like how patients and gentle West was with Charlotte even when her logic got in the way of his happiness and her own. He knew he needed to convince her of things, but he did so in a way that was not aggressive. He introduces her to movies for the first time and lets her see that there is no formula for who can like who. There's no choice in the matte. Just because two people don't seem like they would work doesn't mean that they're not actually perfect for each other. She says she's not good with expressing or showing her emotions, and he finds a way to help her with that. I love how he accepts all of her quirks and not only accepts them but actually appreciates them as something unique about her.

I also like that Charlotte shows him that he has things to be grateful for, like his growing family, and he shouldn't take that for granted. She is an only child, and her best friend is a pet turtle. Despite being socially inept, she is able to go after the things she wants and try new things when surrounded by the right people. And West is her person. You'll adore this book if you give it a try.

This is a cute and short addition to the series, though it can (mostly) be read as a standalone. Mostly, because, like in all the other stories, all the members of the Lonely Hearts Club may be a bit much to keep track of, especially since they only play a very small part.

I like Charlotte's no-nonsense approach to life, the universe, and everything, and how she's always (over)thinking, analyzing, and trying to figure stuff out.
And I appreciate how West complements her, helping her to figure out these elusive things called "emotions". :)

And I think Robert earns an honorable mention as Charlotte's initial crush-slash-lab partner.

2.5 stars rounded down because I liked this one least out of the series so far.

Just a little too much of the stereotypical nerd/jock vibes coupled with this being a novella with respect to length made this lacklustre.

It wasn’t horrid it was just the weakest of the series.

If you’re looking for something cute, quick and clean, this isn’t the worst thing you could pick up. It’s just also not that memorable either.

Cari lettori,

(3.5 stars) - the after-breakfast club

West is the stereotypical dumb jock, & Charlotte is the stereotypical shy nerd. Except they're more than that.

They've been pigeonholed for so long that they more or less embrace the stereotypes of themselves as their reality. It's not until they work out a deal to help each other that they begin to see themselves outside of the boxes they've been in.

They figure out that they each have some qualities of the other. West embraces his curiosity, & Charlotte embraces her sense of humor

The story is sweet & fun, but the relationship development is somewhat superficial. I enjoyed the emotional vs logical interplay between the two of them, though, and the epilogue was very good

*Romance level: passionate kisses, two secondary characters spend the night together in the dorm, no graphic details or descriptions

I loved the way this one started, while poor Charlotte’s well meaning friends stage an intervention to push her to make a move on her crush her lab partner’s but it doesn’t go as planned and runs right into her friends new step brother. West is the college quarterback who his having trouble with his school work something that nerdy Charlotte excels at, when they run into each other again they make a deal, West will help Charlotte get her crush and she will help him with his school work but along the way she just happens to capture the quarterbacks attention! Absolutely loved this one! Can’t wait for the next one.

Nerdy high school senior Charlotte has had a crush on her lab partner, Robert, for awhile. Unfortunately for her, he doesn't know it and she's too shy to do anything about it! West is an outgoing college quarterback who excels in everything but his school work! After Charlotte literally bumps into West for a second time, he decides to make a deal with her...he'll get her crush to notice her if she helps him pass his science class! Sounds easy right?! Maybe for most people, it is, but not these 3! Great YA read!

It’s All about the Chemistry

Charlotte liked Robert; they were compatible in every way, but did they have chemistry? Meeting West would put that to the test. They were opposites; she was shy and studious; he was outgoing and almost failing his biology class—the opposite of studious, but did they have chemistry? A science competition on West’s college campus would put them to the test. Could a kiss give them the answer they seek? This is a cute young adult romance. I enjoyed it and would recommend it even to those who are not young adults.

Oh Maggie Fallen, how do you do this to me? Once again she’s created a character, Charlotte in First Kiss with the Quarterback, that I so massively identify with. Real feelings that are do wonderfully genuine and real. In many (scarily too many) ways I was Charlotte and wow was it wonderful to be her again vis the perfectly written pages of this book. Oh yes indeed. Totally delicious and totally recommended.

Maggie Dallen writes the best YA stories! The quintessential nerd out of touch with feelings and the jock playing dumb meet at Max's new home when Charlotte's the subject of the intervention. It failed the first time. Who'd have guessed that a retrial would result in a new family and home for both Charlotte and West along with Max and the rest of the blended family? How they got there makes a great read!

This was a good one. It was short and sweet. But also funny and warm. I really liked Charlotte and her way of seeing things and dealing with them. I can’t explain it very well but it worked much better than the other ones in the series (and I liked those too) and I really really enjoyed it. It was a good one for sure.

I got an ARC of this a million years ago. I just read it and all opinions are my own.

Shy, academically smart Charlotte is encouraged by her friends to take a chance with her crush and study partner Robert during an intervention where she bumps into West, Max's stepbrother. During a high school science college event at West's school, West helps Charlotte to make Robert jealous in exchange for study help with his failing grades. Charlotte and West are fun together as they get each other, challenge and just click each having smarts the other struggles with. Enjoyed this story.

This is a really cute, fun, clean YA romance about a very intelligent, socially awkward teen girl and an athletic college guy. They both have a need that the other can fulfill. He offers to help her capture the interest of her crush and she will help him improve his grades. This is part of a series but can easily be read as a stand-alone. I liked it. 4.5 stars.

I have enjoyed these stories. They are a real kind of crush. Especially this one. I totally get where she's coming from because I get it. I do have more self-esteem and confidence than she does but I understand her questioning him. She's also scientific so seeing the logic in their relationship is not easy either. I really enjoy these books

I loved this book so much. The differences between Charlotte and West just brought them more together in the end even if there were parts that pushed them away from each other. I felt Charlotte on a deeper level, I understood her struggles and I loved that West didn't give up on her and saw her for who she was

West & Charlotte

Charlotte's "Lonely Hearts Club" friends attempt to stage an intervention to help her catch her crush, Robert. Max's step-brother West decides to help Charlotte out by making Robert jealous. Fake dating for a weekend at the science fair has Charlotte and West studying biology and creating chemistry of their own.

My favorite thing about Maggie Dallen's books is the character overlap from different books and series! In this book, the link was a bit less obvious but I did note that West went to Fairmont High. Which characters from Playing the Enemy do you recognize?

***There is a hint dropped that Max will be the protagonist in a book soon... co-starring with an unlikely hero. My money is on Alex (the original crush from book 2)!***

My Short & Sweet badge is for books recommended for a young adult (YA) audience.<br />These books are<br />Short: stand-alone books that generally take less than 5 hours to read<br />Sweet: high school romance with sweet kisses and hand-holding only (no sex, swearing, or violence). My ARC Review badge helps identify books I have reviewed as part of an Advanced Reader Copy agreement.<br />All of my reviews are positive AND honest.

After reading the first few pages, I was already thinking about quitting because even the first pages started to annoy me. (And the fact that I totally can't relate with Charlotte, the female protagonist, doesn’t change at all!)

But I wanted to give this book a change and convinced myself to read until I get to know who the male protagonist was. And I am really happy that I didn't stop reading because I completely fell in love with Wes. As much as I hate Charlotte, I absolutely adore Wes. He is open-minded, understanding, honest and so sweet I can't describe. In contrary, Charlotte was (even she should be the smart kind) kind of really dumb, egoistic and lived in her self-centred way of life that I can't support. The most annoying part about it was that i was described as her characteristics of being a nerd, intelligent and of love working in labs. As a female physic student I kind of feel offended with that stereotypes rolling around and make me want to scream out loud that this isn't true, that this doesn't have to be the reality.

Probably, if you wouldn't get emotionally attached like me (and I really took this edit personally), you really can enjoy some hot Quarterback, which is totally falling for a little nerd and trys to make everything right to make her happy.
