Tom Wallace was the confident and poised Head of Section in the first six volumes of the critically acclaimed Queen & Country series, but that wasn't always the case. Declassified looks back at his first days as an agent as he's sent to Hong Kong to investigate the murder of a British National. But with the handover of the island to mainland China just days away, can Wallace solve the mystery without causing an international incident?
Greg Rucka, is an American comic book writer and novelist, known for his work on such comics as Action Comics, Batwoman: Detective Comics, and the miniseries Superman: World of New Krypton for DC Comics, and for novels such as his Queen & Country series.
A look back at our current Minder 1's early days has us see how he deals with a murder that could potentially turn into a international problem if he doesn't play it right.
While the first Declassified volume focused on Paul Crocker, this one focuses on Tom Wallace. I really like that Rucka is taking the time to go back and fill in the backstory of these characters, as they play a big role in the regular series. This allows us to understand their mindset a bit more, but furthermore these stories add to the weight of their experience and responsibility. They have been exactly where Tara Chace and the other minders are and make calls based on their experience. These Declassified volumes show us how they navigated that life, and how those experiences molded them.
I thought this one had a great artist with Rick Burchett. He has almost a Golden Age animated style that fit in perfectly with the tone of the book. The retro feel of the art constantly reinforces the fact that this is taking place 15+ years ago, and helps give the book a polished feel. It would be great to see Burchett on the main book, but then again, I would probably prefer him to do another Declassified.
While the danger to the main character is always a bit softened by the fact that this takes place in the past, the book still feels dangerous. The mission feels risky and we really don't know the outcome or the results of what Wallace is doing/has done. One thing that did bug me is that I felt that 3 issues is not enough. The story wraps up very quickly to get under the 3 issue deadline. Hopefully Rucka chooses to do one more issue in the next one, if the story so warrants it.
The first volume of Declassified focused on Crocker, so this one focused on Wallace. I love reading the flashbacks showing how the characters ended up where they are. Honestly he could do an entire series on each character and it would still be interesting.
This one dealt with a crooked British Politician in Hong Kong in 1997, literally right at the time HK reverts back to China. Good story. The art was by Rick Burchett, who I remember from the DC Animated comic books, but his style was slightly more realistic here to fit the more mature subject matter. Really good fit, I have to say.
I only have one more volume of this series left, and I hate to see it end.
A little too short - I wish Rucka would've developed the storyline a bit more and shown more of Tom's character. Nice art, and Paul Crocker's ascension was more intriguing and enjoyable than Tom's assignment.
