Charlemagne: A Captivating Guide to the Greatest Monarch of the Carolingian Empire and How He Ruled over the Franks, Lombards, and Romans
If you want to discover the captivating history of Charlemagne, then keep reading...
Warrior. Ruler. Patron of the arts and language. Terrorist. Brutal oppressor. Protector of the good. Guardian of Christendom. Father of Europe. There are so many different ways in which Charlemagne can be described, and yet the man himself is often seen as an enigma. Depending on the viewpoint of history, he could have been either a monster or a guardian angel. Yet, as with most men, the truth lies somewhere in between. The truth is that he was human.
Charlemagne, crowned emperor of Rome and king of the Franks and Lombards, was the third ruler of the Carolingian Dynasty. He is also known as Charles the Great, and greatness certainly is a fitting word to describe his illustrious rule of 47 years. He added huge tracts of land to the Frankish kingdom, reformed everything from administration to currency to language, and changed the dynamics between the church and state forever—a defining influence on the entirety of Europe during the Middle Ages.

In the typical Captivating History style, the author sets the scene politically for the reader. As Charles/Charlemagne was coming onto the scene, the kings of Francia and Lomarady were spending much of their time tamping down insurrections. Popes of the time were also politically active and interfered with individual state's internal affairs.
Charlemagne is a difficult man to categorize because he was all over the map with his accomplishments and efforts. Although not the first ruler of the Carolingian Dynasty (he was the third), he was a strong ruler and conqueror who was often called the Father of Europe. He ruled for 47 years and spent much of that time conquering rebelling tribes and regions. However, he also worked to stabilize the currency, encouraged reading, and competent administration.
He also changed the relationship between kings and the Catholic Church. He became a protector of the Catholic pope. For this, he was eventually crowned as Holy Roman Emperor. What I liked about this book was the way Captivating History helped create a living-and-breathing Charlemagne for the reader.

Concise, to the point, not a single wasted line or sentence and a good primer for anyone who wants to get a quick overview of Charlemagne and his life and accomplishments.

Another excellent read. While the “Captivating” series claims not to be, and can hardly be described, as scholars works, they’re apparently well researched. Full of interesting and relevant facts for a modern reader. To be honest, just the bibliography at the end of each book is worth the price of the book if you want to do your own research.

Yet another book I read for research, but I really am a full-on fan of this series at this point. Certainly not the most in-depth historical account I've come across, but a good high-level review of the subject matter.

I thought this book did a good job hitting the important points of Charlemagne's life in a succinct manner. While this type of material can be dry, I found this short account to be accessible and interesting.

Need more passion
Need more passion, more novel, is like a little view from this man than a history, but is good resume

I recently took a Great Course in French history. Of course, I've heard about Charlemagne but decided I wanted to know more. For a small book, it was full of information.
