She's been rich and powerful her whole life. How can she possibly survive the slums of New York?

Esther

Clifford Silverton, the country's most prominent oil tycoon and upper-class paragon, is dead. But his daughter, Esther, can’t afford to spend time mourning her beloved father; not with his murderous business partner breathing down her neck, his greedy eyes fixed on a fortune that would make him the most powerful man in the nation.

But Esther is no ordinary Victorian lady. Resourceful and clever, she decides to disguise herself as a man and hide out for a little while. Easy, right? Wrong! Life throws yet another curveball at her when she ends up in the slums of poverty-stricken New York and somehow finds herself the guardian of a gang of orphaned street children. Oh, and then there is that dangerous covenant she struck with the mysterious and dashing Duke of Aberdeen — who happens to be headed out on a controversial mission into the lawless Wild West.

Geroge

George Astely, Duke of Aberdeen, sits on the brink of ruin. Trapped in what feels like the worst year of his life, his estate approaches collapse, and his best friend Billy has disappeared with his investment somewhere in the American frontier. And now he’s completely confused by his growing feelings for the cunning companion that he doesn’t realize is a girl.

In this passionate and haunting tale set in Victorian America, a courageous woman must find her way through peril, uncertainty, and loss, to find the strength to reclaim her life and love again.

'In this epic and haunting tale set in Victorian America, a woman must find her way through peril, uncertainty, and loss to find the strength to love again.

Robbed from the comforts of golden doors and opulent dresses and thrown into the slums of poverty-stricken New York, Esther must bet all she has left on disguising herself as a man and posing as a travelers’ guide. But troubles arise when George Astley, the Duke of Aberdeen, hires her for his daring journey west to the very town her lawyer had disappeared months ago—and she can’t help but fall for the dashing nobleman…

George is having the worst months of his life. His prestigious estate is at the brink of ruin, his beloved sister promised to a pig, and his best friend Billy disappeared with his investment somewhere in the lawless frontier. An Outlawed Heiress and Her Duke is the third book in Denise Day's Time Travel series and take place in Victorian era America and is a historical fiction.

I have read each of Denise Day's books and An Outlawed Heiress and Her Duke has by far been my favorite. Each book in this series has gotten stronger and I really enjoyed this one. But it is important to note that, unlike the previous books in the series, this book does not involve any time travel, regardless of the name of the series and so you shoiud be forewarned if that is what you're looking for here.

The characters had a good depth and feel genuine, the interactions between them read well. I thought that Esther and Geroge had a good chemistry and I loved the kids. I enjoyed the moments of danger and sense of adventure throughout the book, not only when they were traveling across the country, but also while Esther was abrupt change in her station in life in New York.

I was a bit disappointed by how the conflict was resolved. The conflict was the driving force of the entire plot, what brought the characters together and sent them across the country and so I was surprised by how easily it was disolved. (slight, but vague spoiler ahead)It seems to me that if someone is prepared to kill to accomplish their goals, I find it hard to believe that they would accept defeat in the final seconds over a solution that didn't have any legal papers to support it.(end vague spoiler)

An Outlawed Heiress and Her Duke is a lovely book and I recommend it to those looking for a historical fiction. Although the plot of this book stems from a character's actions in response to a unsavory situation from the first book in the series, I don't believe it is necessary for you to have read the previous books if series if you haven't already.

An Outlawed Heiress and Her Duke: A Historical Western Romance
Time Travel #3
Denise Daye
https://www.timelesspapers.com/
Release date 05/31/2020

Blurb :

On the day her beloved father passes away, Esther Silverton, heiress to one of the most powerful fortunes in the nation, believed her broken heart of losing her last family member was the biggest challenge ahead of her. But with her trusted family lawyer vanishing in the Wild West and her father's devious business partner stopping at nothing to use his absence to claim the Silverton fortune for himself, Esther not only has to disappear in the streets of Victorian New York, but also must find a way to disguise herself.
Poor, starving, and posing as a man, fortune crosses her path with the most attractive English nobleman who has ever stepped foot on American grounds, the stunning George Astley, Duke of Aberdeen.
Fresh off the boat, and with his own family at the brink of ruin, George is set to make his way deep into the Wild West to save his investment in a controversial gold mine—at all costs.

George is at a loss. Why does he feel so attracted to this pretty-faced, cunning guide of his? Has he lost his mind? Or is there more to this boy whose intelligence, bravery, selflessness, and kindness seem to touch the deepest corners of his heart like nobody has ever done before…

Oblivious to the fact that the street-smart guide he hired in New York is actually a wanted heiress on her own mission, the two of them set out to not only face the dangers of the lawless American frontier, but also feelings of attraction, sparks, and maybe even love…

From the Author:
Thank you for considering An Outlawed Heiress & Her Duke. If you love historical western romances, sexy dukes, feel-good romances, sizzling passion, steamy love scenes, and strong heroines, you'll love this adventurous Wild West tale of kindness and true love. **

My review :

When a miss in the run, posing as a boy, crosses the path of a man holding maybe the right answer in his hands ...

This is Mrs Denise Daye third published book and my third read by her.
And each time, she gets better and better. Her stories are so much more than romance, it is a tale of women finding their inner strength to stand for themselves and the men who would hold their hands at their side. She gives voice to her heroines, each with her own capacities, finds her footing and alters more than her life. And while I do not always agree as how they take matter in hand, which is not the case here, they try and in their own way, they win.

And how a roller coaster ride this one book was, I knew I would read the second book heroine’s brother story, but never I imagined it would this awesome breathtaking striking moving story.
Mrs Denise Daye has outdone herself with this new book, no time travel but such a journey into the wild of America with some stops into the New York of the Gilded Age, I such loved the first chapters of this book I instantly purchase it.

I was nothing like I imagined, I thought the H&H will meet, catch the villain and HEA.
When it was so very different, sure they meet with Esther under disguise, but prior to it, she had to recreate herself, the Esther, George encounters is no more the young woman on her father’s last breath day. She had to become stronger, determined.

« As things stood, she had to major in the arts of survival, attending the school called reality. »

Thus unknowingly, George will fall for the true Esther, he is attracted by his unconventional guide, he won’t be swept of his feet by her beauty, as he believes she is a boy, it is her soul and spirit that will charm him to follow her to the end of the earth.
George is nowhere close to the lofty peer I expected. He was talked about in his sister’s story, still the man in flesh and blood is even more dashing and courageous, crossing half the world to find the means to save his sister when he just could have sat and married a heiress.
He is compassionate, full of kindness and whatever his plight, he stands next to the weaker if they need his help.
He is the perfect match for the tender-hearted Esther, whom has chosen to nurture five street-urchins instead of tending to her own needs.

So if you like multi dimensional characters, strong and resilience heroes, adventurous journey and a sweet HEA, do not miss this little pearl.
Mrs Denise Daye offers us a gem, this is no raw stone but a very polished diamond, with all the quality of a great jeweler piece.
5 stars.

This is the last book of the trilogy. I liked this one very much. Lady Silverton is hiding out, and taking in Orphans, and her lawyer planning her death. She takes off to America, while George , the brother from the first book is looking for his lost sister. Putting all his hope into a mine, he and his friends share. Things do not go as planned. Their is humor in all three books, plus a quick connection. The men are all kind, and caring. Handsome but not pompous. Plus they care about others. The heroines are smart, independent, kind , and lovely. These three books are great to escape in. I certainly did. I loved them all. 5 stars.

Great story!

I love the way the author Denise Daye weaves multiple story lines together, linking with the first two novels in the series. In this book the author incorporates historic events relative to “Street Arabs”, homeless children living on the streets of New York, and Native Americans struggling to keep their land during the late 1800s. The book is a compelling read and well written . Look forward to reading more by Denise Daye.

Decent story, but...

The main premise of this story is that Esther could not marry marry without consent of her parent or guardian before she wad 21. I could find no evidence that that was ever the case anywhere in what is now the United States, even going back to to the colonial era. The age varied with time and place going from at the high end 19, through the average of 16 down to 7!! Since Esther was 20 she could have married anyone which negated the need for the story.

There were other errors such as talking about the winter of 1881 being the coldest in memory - several in preceding years were colder, with more snowfall, and most young adults would have remembered them. There was a reference to a server being a prostitute as 'a side hustle' which is a phrase a 19th century gentleman would not have used and is inaccurate because the serving would be just the front for the primary occupation of whoring. Two things with the Apache. There were several references to tepees which like modern individuals the apache used for camping. Their primary residence wad a sapling brush structure called a wickiup. The second error refers to the Apache chief wearing an eagle feather warbonnet. The only one to exist wad a Commanchee warbonnet worn by Geronomo, who got it by, trade, capture or theft, no one knows for sure. Finally, none of the Duke's foster or adopted children could inherit his title or entailed properties.

I read the story and when I was not being drawn up sharp by an obvious fault I enjoyed it.

The overall storyline was good, and I loved Esther's tenacity and good heart. The book just felt a little clunky, though. After I finished reading, I realized that Esther might have been better named Mary Sue, and the same for George, because they were too perfect with no flaws. I can't put my finger on why I liked, but didn't love, this story and that could be the reason.

ONE OUTSTANDING THRILL RIDE!!!
Hatching harpies! Denise bolts through with such exuberance and intensity, riding this artfully composed crème de la crème, laying out one killer storyline and gripping plot, wrapping this baby up sleek, shiny and tight. Shattering boundaries and dispensing lines, displaying the strengths and weaknesses being weighed and balanced, kicking this gem into the eye of the storm, breaking it down, slamming it into overdrive, launching it into a hissy with a life-altering culmination. Shenanigans, chaos and mayhem rule the roost displaying the drama, anxiety, intrigue, secrets, danger, mounting suspense and intense situations along with a boatload of moxie and sass, you have one jaw dropping masterpiece. Quirky mishaps and unsettling happenstance, swirl with the formidable trials and taxing tribulations, spinning alongside the explosive twists and wicked turns, putting our characters through their paces, testing them in ways they could have never imagined. The attraction and chemistry builds as each layer is peeled back exposing an intensely undeniable emotions, binding them to one another perfectly. The characters are complex and genuine with traits and qualities that add depth and realism, blend and flow transforming into relatable personalities. The scenes are strikingly sharp with abundant details and descriptions that feel as though you were transported to ground zero with them. Remarkable job Denise, thanks for sharing this lil' fella with us.

Take one spunky heiress that’s been dealt a very raw deal. Add one impoverished Duke caught between a rock and a hard place. Mix in a nefarious inheritance grabber that won’t blink at “wanted, dead or alive”. Sprinkle liberally with action and intrigue drawn from the history of the American old west. Bake for eight and a half hours. Voila! There you have it! An Outlawed Heiress and Her Duke! All that’s left to do is to put on your headphones, sit back, and enjoy! And believe me, I certainly enjoyed this fantastic, cleverly written and beautifully narrated story! The characters are unique! Throughly developed, and real feeling, some I loved like Ester and her Duke, some I loathed, (nameless for fear of spoilers. I have no doubt you’ll easily pick them out!) The premise devine! I love historical fiction and everything in this one, EVERYTHING, the scene setting, the dialogue, the characterizations, all historically accurate! The plot was delicious! No spoilers, you’ll have to listen to get the goods, but believe me, you’ll be glad you did. The narration, amazing! Every word clearly spoken, dialogue perfectly accented and properly emphasized, and pacing consistent throughout! An Outlawed Heiress and Her Duke is truly a five stars across the board audiobook experience and I loved it!

Could Have Been Clean Read -One Token Bedroom Romp
Parents- PG13-R- 17+ read
Language- PG - not a lot of language and no f-bombs
Violence- nothing to warn of, some wild west fighting moments
Sexual Content- R- one pretty descriptive bedroom romping scene, attraction and mention of saloon girls

I have to say that while this was a pretty predictable romance storyline, I did really enjoy it. It really felt like a good clean old romance if not for the one token bedroom romping scene it could have been. That one scene could have been easily left out without damaging the story. There's enough detail to require a warning for younger readers. Overall, I thought it was a really enjoyable story and those who like the 1800's romance adventure stories will enjoy it.

Narrator- 3⭐ Was pretty good although I felt it was really slow. Normal speaking speed felt closer at 1.35x speed, I listened at 1.65x speed.

—I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Best of the Trilogy

"Last but Not Least" is an apt expression for Denise Daye's third installment in her time travel series, "An Outlawed Heiress and Her Duke". George Astley is a familiar character from the other two books in the trilogy and provides insight into the manner in which he provided for his lost sister over the lengthy span of time and space. The reader also learns how he found his one true love, Esther, who first became acquainted with him as a " boy" tour guide named Egan. Esther is on the run from Morris, her conniving and brutal "guardian", who wants nothing more than to seize Esther's vast family fortune after her father's death. The fate of this scoundrel is left unknown, but Esther and George clearly attain their HEA.🤗

I really enjoyed this regency romance book set in Victorian age NYC. The plot was much different from the normal set of this type of book. I love Esther and all her pluck. A rich heiress who has to hide from her recently deceased fathers scrupulous business partner who is threatening to take away her inheritance. Hiding in the slums of NYC she takes on a gang of homeless kids and makes them a family. A wild train voyage across the US with all you’d expect from it (train robbery, wanted posters, saloons, shoot outs) and a beautiful ending with a tribe of native Americans. It had it all and I loved all the characters!! A great story with a happy ending. Warning- there is one sex scene, and while quite descriptive is brief and tasteful, but also leaves nothing to the imagination.

Esther's Excellent Adventure

Esther Silverton, daughter of Cliff Silverton, was raised in Texas. When her father became enormously wealthy, he moved them to New York City so Esther could enter Society. When Cliff died from appendicitis, Esther should have inherited everything. However, Morris, her father's scheming partner, produced a forged Will stating that Esther would inherit when she turned 25 or when she married, whichever came first, and that Morris would be her guardian in the meantime.

Esther realized her days were numbered, so she ran away after making it appear that Morris had murdered her. She was taken in by some street children and taught the rules for survival, but her adventure was just beginning.

-----

Entertaining story with a few historical fact thrown in. The author's admiration for the Indigenous Peoples of North America, and for the beauty of the Western United States shines throughout.

If you are a stickler with historically accurate speech and details (and not more modern language) in a historical novel, then this story is probably not for you. But, if you are looking for an entertaining, somewhat anachronistic, historical mystery adventure, you might enjoy it.
In my opinion this story would have worked just as well without the sex scene; leaving the intimacy implied. (I don't think I was supposed to laugh during it.)

But we read through her travels the bigotry of not only through the classes of rich vs poor, also rasicm of Indians and whites.. Naturally it ends happily

Loved this romantic adventure❤️

I loved this book. I have been looking for a romance book that was different from the rest and this one did the trick. This book didn’t wast time on detail after detail that drags out forever, instead it focused on the story line. I very much so appreciated that. It’s the perfect romantic adventure and I fell in love with so many different characters. It’s one of those books that makes you feel light and airy after reading it. I just might read it again 😌

I read the other two books in the series, I didn't get closure on somethings .. like what happened to the lawyer, what did she do with her home and the servants after she came back, how did his mother react to his marriage, did they have any other children? just saying... Although this was not a time travel as the other two, the time period made it interesting. Other than that I loved the book... it was a nice read.

Would make a great movie

This novel was well written. I love the challenges the author created for our heroine. I thought it had all the elements for a great epic movie with several seasons that Amazon loves to bring to their customers. This was the last of the trilogy and I enjoyed all three. But the Outlawed Heiress and Her Duke was my favorite. It had all the elements for a great movie: drama, love, adventure and history.

interesting story but liked the first two books better

This was an interesting story that I really enjoyed until our heroine got shot. From that point on, for me the story went downhill as it became more and more unbelievable. Someone seriously injured can’t ride a horse aggressively for several hours and while I agree that medications discovered by Indians were brilliant, they are not a miracle cure for a gunshot wound. Just didn’t hang together.

Fairly good read

I enjoyed the first 2 books in this series; although this time, it took much longer to warm up to the characters so the connection to Esther & George didn't have the same chemistry as I would have liked & it wasn't easily flowing like I felt with the first 2 books, unfortunately! And that Morris nemesis was very difficult to understand--pure evil--not to mention his distaste for Esther! What a vile person!

Very good

I was pleased to see the many Victorian facts, starting with the seamy side of NYC, and the poverty of the children. It was hard to rea!ize how arduous a trip across the country became for all the trave!ers to finally reach their destinations without !odd of life from bandits or other marauders. Thanks, Denise. I look forward to your other books.

A beautiful story

I loved this story. It was very insightful. What it was like in NY then and still today.
The story of a very courageous woman was determined to do what she had to, to do all the right things for herself and the children she had come to love. In the end she was the most amazing, generous person, denying herself for the people she loved. A must read.

Loved the history

Good story with a lot of history. Was entertaining as well as educational. Loved learning about this tribe of Indians and what they went through with their lands being stolen from them. Also learning about the slums of NYC and what children went through to survive. Yep a a book I will read again.

No time travel continuation

Although there was no more time travelling in this third book that's first were time travel books it was still very enjoyable. The epilogue missed learning of what became of his sister in book two. How his mother ended up where book two let's know. I think that juicy tidbit was wrongly left out. That's why only 4 stars.

A wonderful read with great characters!

I enjoyed reading this book so much I had to listen to it while I walked. I literally could not put it down until I turned the last page! You like all the characters in the book(besides the villain and the beautiful rival on the train) and admire the strengths of these adventurerers. Great job, Ms. Daye!

2.5 Stars. The beginning was really good, but after that it kept stumbling and reaching. Milton was extremely improbable. By the end, I just wanted to finish the book. Consequently I skipped the author’s note. I just didn’t care anymore. She was a new author for me. My frustration was that it had so much more potential than what was delivered.

It was an ok read but I felt it was left unfinished. The ending seemed rushed. There was no other marriage apart from the Native version. We don't find out what happened to her father's so-called partner, her inheritance etc. We are literally left in the dark about his family as well. Whether his sister ended up marrying or what became of his mother.
