3 Stars
I've spent most of the day pondering this psychological thriller, trying to decide exactly how to rate it. It was tough, because while some of it was very unique and well done, other aspects were much less impressive. I think 3 Stars is a fair assessment of my experience.
SUMMARY
Phoebe Miller's life is on a downward spiral. She and her husband, Wyatt, have let so much space come between them that they have become little more than apathetic roommates. Not only did her (very wealthy, captain of industry) father recently die, but in the wake of his death, multiple women have come forward accusing him of sexually assaulting or exploiting them. Due to her father's scandal and the fact that she is his only child, the press has been hounding her, making it difficult for her to leave the house. Staying home all the time has turned her into a depressed recluse, and it's fair to say, that she no longer takes any pride in her appearance. In fact, sometimes she will spend days in the same yoga pants without showering (not exactly typical behavior from this once impeccably groomed, beautiful heiress). Additionally, she has noticed a car spending a suspicious amount of time parked outside her house, clearly someone in the car is watching her. Who is it and what do they want?
Phoebe perks up when a new family moves in across the street. Although Phoebe generally does not befriend the neighbors, something about super friendly Vicky and her handsome eighteen year old son, Jake, intrigues her. As Phoebe begins to let her guard down and form a friendship with Vicky, she increasingly believes things might not be all sunshine and roses at her new neighbors house. She suspects Vicky's often red faced, volatile husband, Ron, may be the problem. In the meantime, her stalker in the car outside her house is still making appearances and behind her own closed doors, things go from chilly to hostile with Wyatt. You won't even believe what happens next and what the characters try to pull off.
Told predominantly told in third person with short interludes from the POV of various characters, this story is easy to follow and a quick read.
WHAT I LOVED
This is a fairly unique concept for a thriller, definitely not your run of the mill story. It has some very clever plot points.
I love the Chicago setting, it's a fabulous city and makes a great backdrop for a book.
It held my attention from page one to the very last sentence. I also liked the writing style, it's not overly fluffy, yet I still felt had a great sense of place and could envision the characters.
This book is so timely! It's very #me too and ripped from the headlines Jeffrey Epstein-esque. Is this book Life Imitating Art or Art Imitating Life?
WHAT I DIDN'T LOVE
The main premise was iffy. I chose to suspend belief and just go with it but I had to force myself not to over think it. It did help that even the main characters admitted their Hail Mary plan was flawed and may not work, but it was hard to imagine they actually even tried. .
I can literally say I liked NONE of the characters. The more I got to know them, the less I liked them.
All of the 'romances' in the book seemed a bit off, weird, disloyal and unnatural to me.
The farm part was way too gross.
I didn't like the ending. I understand why it happened, but it just seem to fit with the read of the story. I can't say more or I will ruin it.
OVERALL
I think this book is readable, it held my interest but I didn't overwhelmingly love it. If you think too hard, it's easy to point out some flaws, so my advice is to treat it like a fun, easy book and not to over think.
