I’ve moved to my fiancé Cooper’s hometown on the shores of a beautiful lake. His family have welcomed me with open arms. We’re planning the summer wedding I’ve always dreamed of.
But the week after I arrive, one of Cooper’s classmates corners me at the store. She says that Cooper’s not fooling anybody. Everyone in town remembers what happened to Celia Gray…
Celia was Cooper’s high school sweetheart, who died in a tragic accident the year they graduated. But some people think it was no accident. That my kind, loving husband is a killer.
I don’t believe it. But the only way to be sure is to find out what happened to the woman before me…
A dark, gripping suspense novel with a brilliant twist, The One Before is perfect for fans of Lisa Jewell, Gillian Flynn and The Girl Before
Miranda Smith writes domestic and psychological suspense. She is drawn to stories about ordinary people in extraordinary situations. Her debut novel, SOME DAYS ARE DARK, will be released in March 2020.
Miranda has been a staff writer at a local newspaper and a secondary English teacher. When it comes to fiction, Miranda writes about complicated women, dark impulses and Southern settings.
She lives in East Tennessee with her husband and three children.
Well, this one was quite fast, gripping, nail biter, exciting, devouring at one bite and finishing at one sit kind of reading!
I enjoyed the author’s previous book: “Some days are dark” too much. She can create heart pounding, fast pacing, intriguing storylines with deceitful, unreliable characters.
This time the story formed around a powerful Douglas Family who are wealthy, controlling and one of the most powerful, respectful families of Whisper Falls! A small, beautiful, peaceful town has shaken to the core with the tragedy of young Celia’s death more than a decade ago. A few gossiping towners still point their finger at Cooper Douglas whose her boyfriend and the last person who saw her alive. And now Cooper and his fiancée Madison returned back to town to move that place and build a new life even though Madison has second thoughts to be part of small, stable, quiet town life.
Once upon a time she was ambitious reporter who dreamed to get her promotion but a deceitful source ruined her entire career. Now she has to change the scenery, living her busy life to adjust her new reality at where her fiancée was born and raised. But as everyone talks ill of her fiancée behind his back about his connection to Celia’s murder and dysfunctional dynamics inside Douglas family whose members cannot form a civil conversation without enough booze being served, she has real hard times to adapt in her new life!
And Helen is out there to prove Cooper is the perpetrator of daughter’s death. She’s spying on Madison, stalking her each move. She can do whatever it takes to convince her not to marry with a murderer.
Madison gets more confused as she learns more about her fiancee’s past and Douglas family’s secrets. Are they capable to bury all the evidence against them? Could Helen tell the truth? Could caring, loving Cooper have another personality that he hides from Madison? Is she in danger by not cancelling her marriage plan?
Well, there are two twists I didn’t see it coming which executed so cleverly. I foresaw some revelations but they were still well played. The story kept me in toes. And I loved both Helen and Madison’s well developed, connectable characterizations.
I loved the author’s previous book more but it still excited me and it was whirlwind, fast, captivating reading!
I am giving my four suspicious, mind bending, enjoyable, twisty stars.
Special thanks to NetGalley and Bookoture for sharing this unputdownable arc copy with me in exchange my honest opinions.
I feel slighted by her unnecessary comment, but I don’t think she can help herself. In the half-hour I’ve known her, I’ve picked up on her innate ability to aggravate people.
“That’s what we do in Whisper. We choose our side and defend it to the death.” I roll my eyes again. Regina will take some getting used to, but there’s truth in what she says… This town certainly takes sides.
Mistakes cast ripples; they penetrate your surface, the life you thought you had, and expand onward from there.
Sympathy is granted sparingly; it’s typically reserved for forms of tragedy. An unpreventable illness. An unprovoked crime. We forget most people are the source of their own unhappiness. When you’re the cause of your hardships, people are less willing to forgive.
My Review:
This was a clever and twisted tale of intrigue, family entanglements, small-town complications, and secrets. The characters were oddly enticing and magnetic, they plucked at my curiosity to know more about them as they inhabited well-crafted storylines that curved, bent, and folded over like a beautiful origami swan. The pacing was shrewd and expertly honed to keep me enslaved to my Kindle and hissing at any and all distractions that dared interfere with my perusal. This was my first exposure to Miranda Smith’s treachery and I am already craving more.
Whisper Falls is a fresh start for Madison and her fiancé, Cooper. But then Madison learns that Cooper's high-school girlfriend, Ceila had disappeared after a party. Three days later her body was found in the lake. Madison loves Cooper but she can't help wondering. She has to know the truth. But if she starts asking questions, what other secrets will be revealed?
This is a fast paced and gripping read. I was invested in the story from the beginning. It has some surprising twists that will keep you guessing. The story is told from Madison and Helena's point of view. We also learn of what happened in the past. The characters are flawed and unlikeable. I couldn't put this book down. I read it in one sitting.
I would like to thank #NetGalley, #Bookouture and the author #MirandaSmith for my ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Madison and Cooper are moving back to Cooper's hometown (Whisper Falls) where he will will be running the town's newspaper which happens to be owned by his mother. The move is mutual due to Madison losing her job (she loved) as a reporter in Atlanta so she wanted to get a whole new start on her life and career. Coop's family welcomes her even if they are somewhat suspicious of her motives since the family is so wealthy and want to make sure she wants Cooper for love and just not his bank account. Within a few days Madison is approached by some people who have always thought that Cooper had murdered his high school sweetheart Celia, and they have always held a grudge against him even though there was no evidence against him and also the fact that Celia had drowned. Madison knew about Celia but not that people had suspected Coop of being involved in her accidental drowning. Madison is very thrown off by these rumors but she knows that Coop is innocent of any wrong doing because he is the sweetest, patient and most gentle person. she has met in her life. Shortly after, while making her wedding plans she has a run in with a an anonymous person who the family believes to be Celia's mother who has always believed her daughter was murdered. Madison is shaken by these events but nothing can change the fact that she is marrying the love of her life but she just wishes Coop had given her some warning of what she was walking into in Whisper Falls. Unbeknownst to the happy couple there is someone else hiding in plain sight that has another vendetta against Coop and to finally make him pay they must get their revenge by going after the one person who makes Cooper happy and that will be Madison, the love of his life.
This was a deliciously dark and wicked ride into the secrets that many small towns have to hide. There was very good character build-up and story pacing. I had a hard time putting this book down since it was so good. I thought I had it all figured out but I was happily wrong and found several surprising twists and turns which made for a terrific story. Miranda Smith did a wonderful job with writing this book and I can't wait to read more of her novels.
I want to thank the publisher "Bookouture" an Netgalley for the opportunity to read this terrific AVC and any thoughts and opinions expressed are unbiased and mine alone!
I highly oh recommend this thriller and have given a rating of 4 Sinister 🌟🌟🌟🌟 Stars!!

Madison and her fiancee, Cooper, make a move to his hometown. She's more than happy .. his family has welcomed her, and Cooper has a future in running the family newspaper.
Not all is as perfect as she expected. Madison runs into an old classmate of Cooper's who tells her that Cooper had a hand in killing Celia Gray ... Cooper's high school sweetheart. It was eventually labeled as an accident ... but people still remember and still say that Cooper "got away with it".
That's not the only crime he's been accused of. A girl he was dating in college disappeared and has never been found. The girl's mother tells Madison that she's sure that Cooper killed her.
Why hasn't Cooper mentioned any of this to her? Is it because he's guilty of both crimes? Or is he a victim of circumstance.
Much to Cooper's consternation, Madison feels she needs to find the truth before she can commit to marrying him.
Well-written, the plot is complex, filled with twists and turns that had me eagerly turning pages. Just when I thought I had it figured out, the characters would throw me a curve ball. The ending was a bit unexpected.
Many thanks to the author / Bookouture ? Netgalley for the digital copy of this psychological / crime fiction. Read and reviewed voluntarily, opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.
I love mysteries/ thrillers that are set in a small town. This story is filled with suspense, family secrets, drama, and small-town gossip. It is mostly told from the perspective of Madison Sharpe who has moved to Whisper Falls with her fiancé, Cooper Douglas. Cooper belongs to the town's most prominent family and has returned to take over the family business. Madison is excited about this new chapter in her life; planning their wedding and turning their house into a home. But it doesn't take her very long to realize that Cooper hasn't been entirely honest with her about his past and he and his family are hiding many secrets.
A very captivating psychological thriller. The characters and the plot held my interest until the end. Just when I thought I had put all the pieces of the puzzle together, the author drops a shocking twist about Helena's character. It was really clever and I never saw it coming. To be honest, I never saw any of the twists coming. All in all, a very enjoyable read with a satisfying ending. I look forward to reading more books by Miranda Smith.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for the opportunity to read this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Quite a twisted mystery, especially in the last few pages, where the unexpected occurances made it an exciting reading. A smooth flow to the prose captured my interest as author Miranda Smith made the truth so compelling.
This was a pure mystery where Madison, a newly engaged woman, came back to Cooper’s hometown to start a new life. Gossip soon hit her about his ex-girlfriend’s disappearance. A mother wanted justice for the loss of her daughter.
I was quite surprised that as the pages turned, I couldn’t seem to put down my kindle even for a second. The story started like a small town read with gossip and petty rumors and one influential family holding the pursestrings. But it later became a maze where unopened mysteries came to light.
I didn’t know what I was investigating when I started reading, and that was when the author pulled the rug from under my feet as she brought in a new mystery but so well connected to the main plotline.
My niggles worked into my reading. Madison was an investigating journalist. She did tell me that many times, but I hardly saw her investigating. The mid section felt a bit slow. Then the prose picked up to a shattering climax.
The last few lines of the book touched my heart as Madison looked back on who she was. So well written. An engrossing read.
Not only is Madison quite pleased to be engaged to Cooper, she has given everything up to start over with him in the small town of Whisper Falls. However, a shroud of doubt and concern begin to weigh heavily on her as his past relationship begins to be concerning. While in high school Cooper's girlfriend disappeared. After her body was then found, all fingers pointed to him. Cooper's family helped him escape from blame back then. Now, however, it seems that someone is bound and determined once and for all to prove that Cooper had something to do with the girl's death.
Madison begins to doubt Cooper, thus upsetting any plans for a forever future with him. Meanwhile, someone in their lives now has ulterior motives, thus placing Madison's hopes and dreams for a long life with Cooper in jeopardy. Could Cooper have been responsible all those years before? Does she even know the man she is about to marry?
As things begin to unravel for Madison and Cooper, the tension in this book begins to be wound very tightly, thus making this to be quite a thrilling read. Actually, the story begins to take on a chilling effect as events of the past begin to clash with what is going on currently for the couple. So much so that I was completely thrown off. I loved that Madison did not take things at face value, even if it meant there was the possibility for her to discover things were not as they seemed.
I loved the fact that Madison's job played into her curiosity about past events. The fact that she was a reporter played into her skills when it came to unraveling facts. Then there was the bevy of characters who were not all they seemed. I also loved the pieces of the puzzle that were placed before us as readers as we began to doubt Cooper just as Madison was beginning to. The ride was definitely a fun one, full of conflicting twists and turns, some shocking red herrings and a a twist that completely threw me off-guard.
In addition to those things I loved the character who played into upsetting any plans of happiness that Madison and Cooper might have, and watching that play out gave this excellent read an extra layer of intensity. Miranda Smith has written a compelling story and I am more than pleased to have been able to read it. I cannot wait to see what else she has in store for us readers.
Many thanks to Bookouture and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.
It's not often I read a book in one day but I found this soon to be released book by Miranda Smith impossible to put down. Entertaining with enough mystery to keep the reader interested. Would recommend. Thanks to Netgalley for the opportunity to read this book for an honest review.

This book is a gripping read, full of secrets and lies. Madison is due to marry Cooper and agrees to move to his home town of Whisper Falls after she loses her job. Cooper has a job lined up running things at the family newspaper but Madison has nothing planned, other than the wedding. Madison is shocked to hear that Cooper is suspected of killing his girlfriend when he was younger by some of the locals. He’s told her that Celia died from drowning but not about the head injury. Madison starts to dig a bit deeper as something doesn’t feel right and unbeknownst to her, there’s someone plotting revenge for the death of Celia. This book has a few twists towards the end and I really enjoyed it. Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.
So I don’t give 5 stars that often. And this isn’t the most earth shattering book I’ve ever read; however, there was really nothing I didn’t like about it! I read it in an afternoon, and I liked the beginning, middle and end! So, hence, the 5 stars. An engaged couple move back to the small town of the wealth husband-to-be. The main problem the wife-to-be has at first is trying to fit in. But, soon, the past of the husband-to-be’s past start to catch up to him. Is it just a rumor or is there more to the story? Well, there’s ALWAYS more to the story, isn’t there? An easy, enjoyable story!
Wow just wow, I was hooked from the start! Madison Sharpe and her fiancé, Cooper Douglas, are newly engaged and move to Cooper’s hometown of Whisper Falls. Whisper Falls is a small, quiet town where everyone knows everybody and their secrets. Moving back presents tension and memories for Cooper as he was once accused of Celia Gray’s murder in high school. The Douglas’ has prestige and wealth, basically with connections everywhere. As Madison begins to settle in, she can’t shake the feeling that Cooper is hiding details of his past relationships but she’s distracted with the wedding planning. Things aren’t as they seem though and the first of many twists are huge, a bit predictable but it’s still fast paced and suspenseful! Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley for a gifted copy. This is my honest review.
Madison and her fiancé Cooper have moved to his hometown in Whisper Falls, TN. His family welcomes her and she is shocked out wealthy his family is. She had no idea.
Madison knows his former girlfriend Celia died, but many believe it was not an accident. She cannot believe the rumors, as he treats her well. She starts having doubts?
Another narrative, a lady claiming her daughter was killed by Cooper. Cooper definitely has some enemies, which is seems oblivious too, but his family is respected and influential.
Take a small town and mix family, secrets and jealousy. I can always count on a twist from this author. Another 5 star book by Smith. Now I have read/listened to all her books. What’s next?
This was a great read. At times the pace slowed a little but then a twist would happen to bring me right back to the story. The characters were untrustworthy, which I love in a book! All plot lines tied in together at the end, albeit it felt a little rushed and took me some time to follow it.
Fantastic book. This is told by 2 POV , Maddison and Helena.( Celias mum) . It has short chapters so its a very easy read. I love a small town story and this one is set in Whisper Lake. Its all about small town gossip and everyone has an opinion on what happened to Celia. What I loved most of all was the unpredictable ending. Totally different to what I was expecting. Cant wait to add more books to my shelf.
This book by Miranda Smith is an ominous and sinister mix of closet secrets and psychological suspense and is my third sortie into her writing.
The One Before was jam-packed with intrigue, mystification and chilling events. Madison Sharpe is engaged to Cooper Douglas and has given up everything to move to the small town of Whisper Falls to be with him. However, shadows of doubt are creeping in as a past relationship of his becomes concerning to her. Whilst Cooper was in high school his then-girlfriend, Celia, disappeared. After eventually being considered blameless at the time, someone is now out to prove that Cooper had something to do with the girl's death...
Told mainly from Madison's viewpoint, Miranda Smith did a superb job planting seeds of doubt in the minds of both Madison and myself. Throughout the story's progression, I found myself thrown off course as I struggled to decide whether or not things were as they seemed. All the while the tension was being ratcheted up as I was taken on a merry-go-round of past and present occurrences.
The One Before was a distinctive and gritty thriller and I particularly liked that Miranda Smith gave me the fodder to ponder the nature of wrongdoing whilst also featuring a plethora of twists, turns and misdirection to keep me flipping the pages. Reading this novel was a deliciously dark and rewarding reading experience and I will be keeping an eye out for the author's next novel.
I received a complimentary copy of this novel from Bookouture via NetGalley at my request and this review is my own unbiased opinion.
This was a quick and fast-paced read, centering on Madison, who moves to the small town of Whisper Falls with her fiance, Cooper. Madison and Cooper left Atlanta under a bit of a scandal with her job, and Cooper wanted to be closer to his family, but he neglected to mention to her that his high school girlfriend, Celia, was found drowned in the lake years prior and many people there think he did it. Madison is trying to endear herself to Cooper's family while also finding out what really happened to Celia.
There was a great twist about halfway through the book and the pace of the story really picked up from there. There were a few other twists thrown in, though I figured out a couple of them, which made the story even more interesting. The end was tied up nicely, though I saw some reviewers said maybe a little too nicely, though I found it mostly satisfying.
My only real issue with the book was that I didn't gel with Madison- she came off as being kind of snobby, continually talking about coming "from the city" and not really making an effort to learn more about the town or its inhabitants. She did prove herself to be somewhat of a formidable opponent as the book went on, but I never truly connected with her.
All in all, this was a fun read and I'd recommend it to those who like mysteries and domestic thrillers. It's not a super unique plot but it's written well and will give you some surprises. Thanks to Netgalley for providing me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Tense and pacy, packed with twists. This was an addictive, suspenseful, action packed wow of a thriller. Loved it from start to finish. Amazing. A brilliant read.
Starting with Celia we get a glimpse of the day before she died, then we fast forward to Madison about to move to Whisper Falls with her fiancé Cooper for a fresh start. She’s jobless due to her career as a journalist being destroyed and he comes from a wealthy prominent family and is about to take over the running of The Gazette, the family newspaper.
Madison knows of Cooper’s ex Celia but does she know the truth? Helena, is determined she soon will. She has an ax to grind seeing Cooper moving on while she is stuck in the past. Seething at his wealth and privilege and lack of punishment.
I loved the small town setting and Regina’s cutting gossipy remarks about its inhabitants. I wonder if it was a little Easter egg of Mean girls using that name and if as a schoolgirl she had a burn book. This is a town divided on the guilt/innocence of Cooper’s involvement in Celia’s death.
The dual timeline and different narrators gives a variety of perspectives but it was Celia that had me gripped more than Madison. All of the characters are flawed and their decisions are questionable.
With some twists I didn’t see coming and an unexpected denouement this is a thriller packed full of family secrets in the world of the wealthy.
Madison and her fiance’ Cooper have just moved from Atlanta to his hometown, Whisper Falls, TN. . Cooper’s family lives in a beautiful home on the lake and are town royalty. It’s a small town and everyone knows everyone’s business. . Not long after moving, Madison discovers that Cooper’s high school girlfriend died and that the townspeople believe it wasn’t an accident. . Madison knows Cooper is a kind, sweet man that could never hurt anyone. All he wants is to give her the life she dreams of and she loves him with all of her heart. . She hears rumors around town. She feels unsettled. Should she ask questions and risk disrupting her new life? Should she believe the loving man that has always supported her or strangers that love to gossip? ________________________________________ . I love stories that are set in small towns. Especially ones full of secrets. I thought I had this one figured out, but I was wrong. There are definitely some curveballs and at one point I just sat there stunned for a minute. It’s a quick, entertaining read. I really enjoyed it!
Madison and her fiance Cooper Douglas return to his home town to have their wedding and start their married life together. But Madison is shocked to discover the town's negative attitude towards Cooper due to the death of his high school sweetheart Celia. It was ruled an accident but could his family have used their wealth and influence to cover up a murder? Madison is a tenacious journalist but has now turned her attentions to organising her wedding and solving the mystery about her fiance's dead girlfriend. She is loyal to Cooper and determined to prove his innocence. Meanwhile we also see Helena's perspective. She is convinced that Cooper killed her daughter and will stop at nothing to get justice. Some chapters are delivered as flashbacks to Celia's final hours before her death in 2006 and it becomes clear that there have been secrets hidden by the influential Douglas family. I enjoyed Madison's journey of discovery as she tries to reconcile her kind hearted fiance with the cold blooded killer image he has in town. She is also trying to negotiate new relationships with her in laws, a stressful experience that most people will be able to identify with! The style of writing is easy to read and the plot is fast paced. There is great misdirection and some fantastic twists that I had not expected at all. Overall, The One Before is an intriguing thriller.
Firstly, thanks to NetGalley and Bookoutre for the opportunity to preview.
I found this to be an ok read. Cooper comes from a wealthy family and he brings his fiancée, Madison to his hometown of Whisper Falls to live. There is a mystery as to why Madison wanted to leave her job and friends in the city, but, when the secret is revealed it’s a bit of a let down. In fact, I found the whole book a tad formulaic and the writing style bland.
Each chapter is written from the perspective of a different character and that works well, as does the theme of an earlier murder mystery that Cooper is suspected of. Because of this, it was OK for me.
It’s just missing that difficult to explain ‘something’ that made it a bit of a chore to finish. The twist is ok and there is an element of surprise.
I’ve been on another psych thriller kick lately. Fortunately, most of them have been pretty good, and each one has had something unique that makes them stand out. For The One Before, I’d have to say that the author pulls a switch that I absolutely did not see coming, and it changed my perspective on the story completely. Well done for that. Even though it started slowly, once you reach a particular point in the book (you’ll know it when you read it), you realize that everything was put in place exactly this way to lull the reader into a sense of familiarity and maybe even complacency. Then the twists happen. Truly, this book totally picked up in the second half. Once I got to the turning point, I couldn’t put it down. For a full review, please visit Fireflies and Free Kicks. Thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for a digital ARC of this book.
Whisper Falls is a fresh start for Madison and her fiancé Cooper. The safe, quiet town on the shores of a beautiful lake is the perfect place to spend the rest of their lives.
But then Madison learns that Cooper’s high-school girlfriend Celia disappeared after a party. Three days later, her body was found in the lake.
And the town thinks it wasn’t an accident.
Madison loves Cooper, but she can’t help wondering. She has to know the truth.
But if she starts asking questions, what other secrets will be revealed? Will she meet the same fate as the woman who came before her?
A dark, gripping psychological thriller with a brilliant twist, The One Before is perfect for fans of Karin Slaughter, Gillian Flynn and Rachel Caine.
BLOG TOUR REVIEW
Review for 'The One Before' by Miranda Smith .
Read and reviewed via NetGalley for Bookouture publishers and Bookouture anonymous
Publication date 4th November 2020
This is the first book that I have read by this author. It most certainly will not be my last!!!
I was originally drawn to this book by its eye catching and intriguing cover and intriguing synopsis. The blurb also stated that it is perfect for fans of Karin Slaughter. I am a HUGE Karin Slaughter fan so am looking forward to see if it loves up to this statement!! I must admit I was also biased due to the publisher being Bookouture. I have yet to read a book published by Bookouture that I haven't enjoyed. Hopefully this won't be the first... Watch this space! (Written before I started reading the book).
This novel consists of a prologue and 66 chapters. The chapters are short to medium in length so possible to read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case!
This book is based in Whisper Falls, USA 🇺🇸.
This book is written in a mix of first and third person perspective and the main protagonists are Celia (Third person perspective) Madison (First person perspective) and Helena (Third person perspective). I enjoy books written in both first and third person with several protagonists as it let's you see the bigger picture of what's going on and you get to know more characters more, what they are thinking and what they are doing. You alse get to bond more in first person perspective with the character. It feels like you get to see the whole picture and not miss out in anything.
WHAT did I just read!!!! WOW!!! I mean seriously Wow!! I was NOT expecting that lot fairplay!!! This has GOT to start with a MASSIVE WELL DONE MIRANDA SMITH!!!! Ooopps sorry, yes, needed a minute to get over that but I've just left you hanging there... Sorry.... Let me tell you more...
Firstly let's start off with the writing style, etc!! Extremely well written book which had me hook line and sinker!!! It is so smoothly and beautifully written I completely forgot I was even reading a book a few times. The blurb and cover really fit the storyline. This book did have a cover change and while I did like the previous covers the be new one suits it the best.
As you can tell I LOVED the storyline. I found it quite fast paced and loved the setting and just well... Everything!!! The first twist comes in at around 50% and that hit me a shocker immediately. Was not expecting that one... Or the rest. I'd assumed the identity of a certain person only to be completely side swept there and from that point on it just became explosive!!! Twists after shocks after turns!!! Arggghhh... Its so hard to NOT say anything about them as it will give too much away and spoilt it for future readers but it definitely left me speechless over and over!!! I have read hundreds of psychological books and I really do think this one is definitely in the top 3 when it comes to dropping bombshells. I am, in fact still she'll shocked!! Just brilliant fairplay and all links in and wraps up perfectly!!!
THE plot throughout is rammed with suspense, mystery, lies, surprises, tension and did I say surprises!!! Well done Miranda you have most definitely hit my favourite author list!!! I am looking forward to reading more of your books and when oh when is this going to be turned into the movie of the year!!! Gone Girl and many others have NOTHING on this one!!!
Loved the characters and thought they were portrayed perfectly with great character development. I was completely invested in them and thought they were all unique with their own quirks, I really seemed to click with Regina but also think she's a Marmite type of girl, love her or hate her. I was definitely surprised by the secrets that some were hiding and how well they were kept hidden too!!

Miranda Smith writes psychological and domestic suspense. She is drawn to stories about ordinary people in extraordinary situations. Before completing her first novel, she worked as a newspaper staff writer and a secondary English teacher. She lives in East Tennessee with her husband and three young children.
This book surprised me in that the pages turned. The story started like a small town read with gossip and petty rumors and one influential family holding the pursestrings. But it later became a maze where unopened mysteries came to light.
My niggles worked into my reading. Madison was an investigating journalist. She did tell me that many times, but I hardly saw her investigating. The mid section felt a bit slow. Then the prose picked up to a shattering climax.
So well written. An engrossing read. Would recommend
