Debut author Kathleen Denly has crafted a sweet & swoony romance with delightful, vividly-drawn characters you'll quickly grow to love. Waltz in the Wilderness takes these characters - and readers - on a tender (and sometimes harrowing) journey with well-timed tension in all the right places. What a great novel!
I know I'm going to give this book a five star rating because this book has made me groan out loud, want to give Eliza the good shaking she deserves at times and I have even snickerd in some places. Eliza is a fabulous character though. You just gotta love her. Daniel is a good man and he is a gentleman in every way possible. His mama raised him right! I love him too. As for Alice, Richard and Caroline I felt this was like a second story. I can't imagine being in Alice's shoes. Not at all!! In in a few ways I don't like her at all but you really have to read this book to understand where she came from. I didn't like Cecilia at all! But, I am hoping she will learn her lesson somewhere along the line. Karma does have a way of coming around. Poor Uncle Henry! He sure got more than he bargained for! Bless his heart. He's a good man though. I give him credit for trying. The Lord is good is He not? I would like to give Him some credit in this story too. For He saw the big picture that no one else could see. He had a big plans for Eliza. He's got the whole world in His Hands. I highly recommend this story. I hope it blesses you as it has me. (There is some suggestion that alcohol and abuse are involved). My thanks to the author for a complimentary copy of this book. I was NOT required to write a review. NO compensations were received and all opinions are my own.
With a stubborn but loyal heroine and an honorable hero with a steadfast faith, this story is a bit complicated but that’s what makes it interesting and enjoyable. It was fun to read about Eliza Brooks’ journey into womanhood. The historical facts about early San Francisco and San Diego and ship travel of that time were fascinating. Daniel Clarke is a man with high principles, even as he is escorting Eliza into the wilderness to find her father. He tries to honor God and his fiancée but could he be falling for Eliza? Would they find her father? Would Daniel’s betrothed feel the same after four years apart? Some characters had much to admire and others were fun to boo and hiss at. This is the first of a series and I am anxious to see what is in store for the characters in the next book. *I received a complimentary ecopy of this book from the author. I was not required to give a favorable review. All opinions are my own.*
Right from the very first chapter, these characters invited me to join their story and waltzed their way into my heart. I enjoyed my time spent within the pages of this engaging book and I honestly hope that you get to enjoy this story as well!
Eliza Brooks has more than her fair share of rough edges. Prickly could be a word that most would use to describe her. She keeps others at a distance and doesn't let people get close. Eliza has experienced more than her fair share of loss, everyone she's ever let in, has either died or left her behind. I loved the character journey and growth that Eliza makes. A reminder that everyone we meet has a story, and is hurting. That everyone needs our grace and kindness.
With an engaging plot, dynamic characters and unexpected dangers, you won't be able to put this book down! More often than not I found myself talking to these characters as if they could hear me! Kathleen Denly brings not only the setting but the characters to life and invites the reader to join the story!
I eagerly look forward to more page-turning adventures in the Chaparral Hearts series and more fantastic stories from this author in the future!

Waltz in the Wilderness by Kathleen Denly has my feel-good nod of approval. Not only did it satisfy my reading soul, but it gave me real substance to chew on as I contemplated the characters and their response to untenable circumstances. I fell in love with strong-headed, one-purpose Eliza Brooks and Daniel Clark, her uncle's employee who becomes her reluctant escort. Other characters I couldn't stand at all, while I wondered how the people around them could stomach them. The novel is pretty predictable, though fun until certain secondary characters decide to take over the story as if they don’t like where the author was taking them. One character challenges Eliza to compare her motives in her search for her father with Scripture directives. Then we are allowed to see what Eliza will do about her willfulness that she has until now labeled ”responsibility.” I got so deeply into the story that my mind was boggled by the weight these characters bore, who stood up and developed a backbone and changed the course of the story. I really wanted to know more about what life is like for them, and perhaps we’ll find out. I appreciated clear explanations of faith, themes of feeling undeserving of God’s love, and the need to truly trust Him to care for ourselves and others. It obviously affected the players’ daily lives. This story does include to some degree the sad effects slavery and prejudice have on people who are different from their abusers. I loved this book and I highly recommend it. If you like reading Miralee Ferrell or Misty Beller, you will like Kathleen Denly. I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author and publisher through Celebrate Lit. This does not influence my opinions, for which I am solely responsible.
I was sent a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. I was not financially compensated, and all opinions are 100 percent mine.
When I began reading this book, I figured it might be a typical historical fiction romance, but in truth, this is a cut above most in this genre. It is a Christian book, and Biblical principles are woven into the very framework of the story. Historical accuracy is also emphasized throughout. In fact, the author herself discusses the historical accuracy of the book at the end of the book. There is nothing inappropriate in this book, and if you love historical/prairie romances, this book is for you.
I was pleased with the way in which the author detailed the story and focused on the characters. I hadn't even realized this was the first in a book series, and this is one of the strongest first book in a series I've read in some time. While there are the typical elements the readers will enjoy, there are plenty of moments that will keep you guessing along the way. The romance is a joy, and I would definitely sign up for the next in the series.
Waltz in the Wilderness was a great trek back in time to the rugged land of California. I liked Eliza and Daniel and felt for them as they both began to experience feelings of love for each other while Daniel was still betrothed to another. I appreciated that Daniel and Eliza both respected that engagement, even as it caused them pain to do so.
I really enjoyed reading about their travels up into the mountains and what they ended up discovering up there. The side story involving Alice was also interesting and I liked the way the author gave little glimpses throughout the novel as to what had been going on in Alice’s life during the time that she wasn’t answering Daniel’s letters.
(4.5 stars)
I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
Love love and love this story!! One of the hardest lessons that we'll ever have to learn in life is letting God have complete control of our lives, even when we think we could do a much better job of putting the pieces of our lives together. It can be so difficult trusting Him with the people we love, our hopes and dreams, everything. The world can be a scary place and there are times when His plans never make any sense. But that's where trust and complete release come into play and it usually turns out to be the best decision ever when the answers to our prayers finally arrive. It's never easy, but He loves us more than we could ever imagine and always has everything under control.
I honestly struggled with this story, mainly due to Eliza's character. Her personality was difficult to connect with. Although she showed slight growth by the end of the book, the progress felt too slow, which also delayed the overall pacing. I found myself more interested in secondary storylines and characters rather than the main cast and plot. I did like Daniel and Richard. Had I not been reading with my book club, I would have DNF'd this title early on. The writing is good. The style just wasn't for me.
Kathleen Denly has written a beautiful tale in the first installment from her Chaparral Hearts series, Waltz in the Wilderness. I adored this book. I enjoyed the historical details throughout the book. The author did a fantastic job with her vision on how it must have been like in that time in history. Eliza is one of those characters that I love from the start and feel a connection to. I admired her courage and bravery. Daniel is a wonderful man of faith. It was great seeing how Eliza and Daniel interacted with one another and I am happy I was able to take this adventure with them.
I am giving Waltz in the Wilderness five plus stars. I highly recommend it for readers who love clean historical fiction. I look forward to reading the next book in the Chaparral Hearts series and will be early waiting for its release.
I received this book from the publisher. This review 100% my own honest opinion.
A Waltz in the Wilderness is a solid debut with an engaging plot. I enjoyed all of the historical details about California in the early days of cities like San Francisco and San Diego. The descriptions of the natural landscape - including both the beauty and dangers (flash flood, anyone?) are finely done. I felt fully immersed in the setting. I love a story that involves a journey, so that was my favorite aspect of the plot.
Eliza is a tough lady to like at first. She comes across as way too headstrong for my tastes at first, however, the glimpses of development gave me hope that she was going to change over the course of the story, and happily, she does. Daniel is noble loyal man. Both he and Eliza are determined to do the right thing by others, even when it's the opposite of what they themselves want. The romance is tender, and the secondary characters add a variety of flavor to the story - some are admirable components to the current story, while others you hope might have their own story in a future book.
I recommend Waltz in the Wilderness to fans of sweet historical romances. I definitely hope to read the next book in the series.
My thanks to the author for a review copy of this novel; I was not required to post a positive review, and these are my honest thoughts and opinions.
I am so glad that the ACFW Book Club chose to read this book for April. I loved the story.
Eliza Brooks loved her father very much. She was disguised as a boy while her father was panning for gold. One day her lovely figure was revealed and she and her father needed to leave very quickly. Eliza's father took her to his brother's home to live. Eliza did not want to part with her father. Her uncle loved her very much, but his wife was constantly looking for a way to marry off Eliza. Eliza was having no part in her aunt's schemes.
Eliza felt huge guilt because of her mother's sudden death. Eliza did not feel loved, except by her father. She had a lot to learn.
One evening Eliza's aunt invited a young carpenter to dinner. Of course, this aunt had plans to marry off her niece. Eliza found out that this young man by the name of Daniel Clarke was boarding a ship and that the ship would pass by San Diego. San Diego is the last place she received a letter from her father.
Eliza wants to board this ship, but single women back in that time period did not travel without a female escort. She found out the name of the captain of the ship and asked him if his wife would be her chaperone. The captain said yes. Little did Eliza know that this captain was not an honest or happily married man. Danger lurked on the voyage for Eliza.
Daniel Clarke was an honorable man. The only thing was that since childhood he was promised to marry another. Daniel and Eliza became friends and Daniel helped Eliza to search for her father.
Along the journey, Daniel and Eliza have romantic feelings for each other but do not kiss or become involved because Daniel had a fiance.
The journey to find Eliza's father was very arduous. There was a big surprise in store for Eliza.
The title of the book is so wonderful because of what Eliza always thought her married life should be. She had such wonderful memories of her mother and father. The author really did a great job in portraying wonderful family life and a beautiful romance.
I blame Kathleen Denly for my lack of sleep. I couldn't stop reading this book! "Just one more chapter. Ok, NOW one more chapter. Well, I've gotten this far, may as well make it to page 200," etc.
Why do these small people insist on eating? And why am I not smart enough to make sure I'm done with the book instead of having the food done when there's only 20 pages left???
I love westerns and I love historical fiction, and this book didn't disappoint. It had me on the edge of my seat, wondering how everything was going to work out. I'm afraid I didn't think nice thoughts toward Eliza's aunt, and I very much enjoyed what happened later in the book. Clean romance, action, adventure-all in the old west. You can't go wrong with that!
I loved this book! Kathleen Denly wrote such an entertaining story! I loved Eliza and Daniel! I enjoyed how their personalities fit together. This story was very unique. This book makes me want to read more from her!
I received a complimentary copy from the publisher. I was not required to write a positive review. All opinions expressed are mine alone.
I just finished reading this book and am kind of sad that it's over. I am very much looking forward to the next series in this author's collection. I thought the author did a wonderful job with the accuracy of the history during that time. I love that she included her research at the end of the book on where she got her information for the historical facts. Eliza, the main character is easy to love. She may be stubborn and headstrong but she is also very loving and loyal. There was adventure, suspense and romance all rolled into one story. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who loves Christian romance novels. This is one of the best I've read so far.
Listening to Waltz in the Wilderness felt like being swept into a graceful yet daring dance, where every step carried me deeper into a rugged wilderness filled with faith, growth, and danger. Kathleen Denly masterfully blends heartfelt spiritual truths with historical intrigue, and Rosanna Pilcher’s narration turns the experience into something unforgettable.
Eliza Brooks is a force to be reckoned with—determined, prickly, and fiercely loyal. She might stumble along the way, but her journey reminds us that God's plans often unfold in the least expected ways. Daniel Clarke, on the other hand, is a steady and selfless gentleman who embodies honor and unwavering faith. His decision to safeguard Eliza, despite the cost to his own plans, beautifully reflects the heart of a true servant of Christ.
Pilcher’s narration brought these characters to life with an artistry that felt like a performance rather than a reading. Her tones shifted gracefully, matching the story's moods—from moments of peril to tender scenes of faith and reflection. The raw emotion she conveyed during Eliza’s struggles and Daniel’s moments of surrender to God’s will made the story resonate in a deeply personal way.
From the crashing waves of a shipwreck to the untamed California mountains, the vivid settings were as much a part of the story as the characters. Pilcher’s delivery painted the wilderness in such rich detail that I could almost feel the wind on my face and hear the rustling chaparral.
This audiobook swept straight into my heart with its heartfelt themes of redemption, trust, and God's providence. If you’re ready for a journey filled with grit, grace, and romance, I highly recommend it. It’s a story worth every moment, and I’m eager to read the other books in the Chaparral Hearts series that I haven’t discovered yet.
I received an audiobook version of this book from the author. I am not required to write a positive review in any way or for any reason. My honest and unbiased opinions expressed in this audiobook review are my own. My review focuses on the writing style, the pacing, the narration, and the story’s content, ensuring transparency and reliability.
Let us just start with the beautiful cover, shall we? It’s a dreamy one that’s for sure and seems to portray the inner struggles of Eliza quite well 😊.
The characters in this book are quite unique. The main characters Eliza and Daniel both have some very big struggles to overcome and a lot to learn along the way. Eliza especially caught my attention as a character who had to learn some important lessons in trusting God to guide her path. I did feel that Eliza’s character was kind of wishy-washy, but that may be just me. I like characters that are strong and can plan well and execute things themselves; Eliza always seemed to need help in some form or another, and even though she grew up with her Dad in remote locations she did not seem to know much about survival. Daniel was a great knight in shining armor right from the very beginning and I truly liked his character.
I thought that this new twist on a classic storyline was fun and enjoyable. Waltz in the Wilderness had a sense of adventure, travel, and courage followed closely by themes of faith, reliance on God, and forgiveness. I think that Kathleen Denly did a great job writing this story and that she stuck close to the time period (i.e. the mode of travel the characters used, and the clothes the characters were described to be wearing) very accurately.
Overall, I would give this story 4 out of 5 stars for the adventurous theme, the basis of faith, and the lessons learned by the characters.
*I volunteered to read this book in return for my honest feedback. The thoughts and opinions expressed within this review are my own.
This book has touched me in ways I’m not even sure I can entirely express in a review. Denly has penned a beautiful novel that captures the power of family, friendship, and relying on the Lord’s timing. She touches on the importance of healing, and allowing others to help you. She brings to light some difficult topics even, and yet does so in a way that just allows the characters to shine through those moments. Denly has managed to not only grab my attention through the main characters, but through the secondary story line as well.
I would be remiss if I didn’t mention how I connected with the secondary character Alice. At first, I wasn’t quite sure how her story was going to fit into the big picture (it does though, so not to worry), but even so I was drawn to her character. Her father reminds me of my own father, and I had a journey of wanting to get away from him as well. And while I know (and hope!) this would not be true for every reader, I have to say that it really intensified my reading experience. I knew exactly how she would feel and react in the different situations she was placed in, and Denly nailed it. I would love to see more of Alice in the future!
Eliza and Daniel were also wonderfully crafted characters. Eliza is a woman who will do anything for those she loves – whether it’s playing the role of a boy, sneaking on a ship, or risking her life to find the father that she loves so much. She’s a strong heroine for sure, and even so Denly was able to capture some vulnerability in her, and character growth that I was not initially expecting.
Daniel is the hero that has just moved into my mind, and isn’t going anywhere for awhile. What I liked about him the most was his loyalty, even when it felt wrong. I don’t want to risk any spoilers here, but I will say that he was a noble character, and even though I wanted him to go down a certain road, he chose not to. I think that made me like him even more. And not to worry romance fans – there are plenty of swoony moments that will leave you wanting more!
In addition to relatable characters, vivid settings, and swoony moments, Denly has delivered a story that will resonate with readers and have them looking at their own spiritual journey. Her love for sharing the gospel is so evident among the pages of this book, and I can’t thank her enough for writing the powerful message of relying on the Lord. It’s something that is certainly difficult at times, but if we do so, we can find the blessings will be so much more than we ever dreamed of. That is what I hope readers will get out of this story above anything else.
Waltz in the Wilderness is a well rounded story that will leave readers breathless. It is a poetic story of God’s love, God’s healing, and God’s perfect timing. I highly recommend this debut novel, and assure you it will be in Top 2020 lists among readers. I received a complimentary copy of this book. I was not required to write a favorable review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I have been a fan of Kathleen Denly’s BLOG for almost three years now, so when I heard she was releasing a novel I knew I had to read it immediately. Boy, am I glad I jumped at the chance to read Waltz in the Wilderness. It is fantastic. I was captivated from the very beginning and the pages kept turning at lightning speed. I am a native So Cal girl; been here my entire life. I have traveled to San Diego many a time, so getting to learn some history about the early days was fascinating and fun. I very much enjoyed Eliza and Daniel’s characters. I found them to be perfectly crafted and they come off very relatable and genuine. And, I found the themes of Waltz in the Wilderness thoughtful and plentiful. In my humble opinion, this beautiful novel would make an excellent choice for any book club. All in all, I loved this adventurous, wild romance and feel it is a 2020 must-read for sure!
Eliza’s character arc is superb. At first, I didn’t like Eliza’s character at all. She is petulant, self-righteous, and volatile. It was hard for me to root for her, and I often found myself feeling frustrated by her as Daniel, the hero, does. But as the narrative progresses, her volatility calms down and I found that Eliza grew on me. Her walls come down a bit and I began to understand her actions a little better, which led me wanting to root for her. By the end of the novel, if Eliza were a real human, I would have wanted to be her friend. What I gleaned from this excellently crafted character arc is to never judge based on first appearances alone. I judged Eliza and found her wanting, but I didn’t know anything about her. How many times have I done that in real life to real people? How many potential friends have I lost because of my initial, knee-jerk judgments?
Jesus tells us in Matthew 7:1-2 not to judge others because by the measure we judge others we will be judged. Instead, He shows us that we need to illustrate grace, mercy, and kindness towards others. Shamefully, I often forget this, especially in our crazy day and age. I’m grateful for Ms. Denly’s reminder that I need to be less judgemental and more patient and understanding. I was ready to completely write Eliza off at the beginning of this story and wasn’t willing to give her much of a chance. What does that say about my heart?! 😫 Thank you, Ms. Denly, for holding this mirror up for me and allowing me the opportunity to see where I need to make corrections. I can definitely say God has used Waltz in the Wilderness to convict my heart.
There is just so much to love about Waltz in the Wilderness that one review just cannot do this book justice. I highly recommend reading this wonderful novel. I truly believe you will love it as much as I do!
I received a review copy of this novel in eBook form from the author via Celebrate Lit. In no way has this influenced my review. The opinions expressed in this review are my own.
I really enjoyed this book. It was captivating right from the start as we meet Eli who really is Eliza. She has lost her mother and blames herself. She is with her dad in the gold mines, poor, hungry and most of all definitely not being a lady. Her dad realizes that this is not the place for her and takes the chance of taking her to his brother in San Francisco. Eliza is none too happy about his decision and this is where the story truly begins for me. Eliza is definitely very close to her father and I think a huge part of it stems from blaming herself for the death of her mom. She doesn't want to lose him too and wants to make sure that he is well. When he leaves her with her uncle without her knowledge she is furious but it is truly for the best despite her Aunt Cecilia. Seriously her aunt is one of those characters that you despise due to her attitude. Now back to Eliza, it took me a while to get to like her. On the outside she seems like a selfish, self centered brat. But once you get to know her inner being, you understand why she is like that.
We meet Daniel who is absolutely amazing! You know I am going to say it... he is definitely swoon-worthy! He is a true gentleman and even though he is engaged to Alice he can't help being drawn to Eliza. So when Eliza decides that she needs to find her father and boards a ship unchaperoned of course my man Daniel steps up to the job especially after he sees how the captain and the other men are eyeing her. (I told you he's swoon worthy) He treks it all over God's creation to help her find her father and during all of this you can't help but love Eliza because finally her shell is breaking and she sees that she can trust and open herself to something more than herself. That God is the person she needs to be trusting for everything. That was an amazing moment. I know you are thinking of Alice... but don't worry about her. I assure you everything does get resolved for her in the best possible way. I will say that Alice was a great addition to the story and I do hope we get to see her in the next book as I would like to know what happens to her brother and mother.
This is Kathleen Denly's debut novel and I have to say I am very impressed! She not only did a great job at painting a picturesque setting in which you can lose yourself in but made some great characters that you can relate to. I for one cannot wait to read the next one, which just happens to be on my bookshelf!
I received this book from the author. I was not required to post a positive review. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.
A promising beginning to the Chaparral Hearts series by Kathleen Denly, “Waltz in the Wilderness” combines the best of westerns, adventure and survival stories, and of course romance. This is a story that I think is best enjoyed without reading the synopsis first, which is a practice I always employ to avoid knowing how the story might play out. As I read, I was so glad that I went in blind because the characters and the plot were surprising in ways that they would not have been otherwise.
Historically a fan of solely historical pioneer fiction, for the past several years or so I have branched out and have been exploring other genres, historical in particular, including Westerns. As soon as I saw the cover for “Waltz in the Wilderness”, coupled with the whimsical yet mysterious title, I knew that I had to request a copy to review. Like others that I have read in recent months, this book manages to inject the story with interesting detail and subplots; there is no lull in the action, but I also did not feel overwhelmed. This is such an important distinction to make, and it can make or break the book. With “Waltz in the Wilderness”, what drew me in the most were the characters.
Far from the fainting heroine waiting for her knight in shining armor, Eliza Brooks has grown accustomed to carrying her own and her pa’s burdens. When he goes missing, however, Eliza must rustle up every bit of her courage as she embarks upon her quest to find him. Although at times I shook my head at her naiveté, for the most part she demonstrates extraordinary strength of character, tempered occasionally by gaffes that make her human.
Daniel Clarke, whose introduction to Eliza gets off on the wrong foot, is preparing to leave California to return to his family and fiancée in Boston. However, crossing paths with Eliza steers him off his course as the two decide to navigate the treacherous Southern California mountains. “She was, without a doubt, the most exasperating woman God had ever created.” It is their tenacity and resilient spirits that urge them on, deepening their faith and their own friendship, but will it be enough?

What a wonderful wilderness adventure story and so much more besides wrapped up in this novel by new to me author Denly.
Taking place in much of wild and untamed California soon after the gold rush of 1849, we find Eliza Brooks growing up with her beloved Pa and a whole lotta of guilt on her young shoulders. Due to the dangers of a young female panning for gold, her father decides it is best to send her to her uncle and aunt to live in society. For awhile Eliza can do nothing but obey, but as she grows up her thoughts are always on finding her father and why he has stopped his communications with her.
In the meantime we are also given hero Daniel Clarke's story who has gone to California to try and make his living so that he may go back to Massachusetts and marry Alice his fiance.
After meeting, Daniel and Eliza have a deepening chemistry between them, though each try to smother it. Daniel feels especially protective of Eliza whether it be from unscrupulous men or nature itself. And so going with his gut and conscience he decides to join her on a very dangerous wilderness journey in hopes of finding her father.
Meanwhile, we are given snippets of what has been taking place months before with Alice and her family. All of those snippets leading up to a very momentous climatic change for everyone.
I really enjoyed this book that read almost like an epic saga and I look forward to following this series.
I received a copy of this novel from the publisher. I was not required to post a positive review and all views and opinions are my own.
I love a strong-willed character which is why I loved Eliza Brooks so much. I understood her fears and concern for her father and their close relationship since the death of her mother. Did I understand the lengths she would go to in finding him? Not at first but that's what I loved about her, her determination is admirable and once she made up her mind to do something there was no stopping her.
Daniel Clarke is the epitome of a gentlemen, he is truly an honorable man as he escorts Eliza on her search to find her Pa. Meanwhile at the home of Uncle Henry and Aunt Cecilia there is all kinds of things happening. Eliza had been living with them but took off to find her father but Uncle Henry had no idea where she was, his wife is rather tight-lipped and they have an unexpected guest in need of help. There are so many fantastic characters in this book to love(and a couple to dislike)that I was sorry to see this story end. I'm happy that this is the first book in a series by Ms. Denly so I'm looking forward to what she has in store for her readers in the next book.
Overall, this is easily one of the best books I have read this year. The writing is top-notch, the characters are well developed and delightful. Waltz in the Wilderness is perfect for readers of , historical and Christian romance novels with a bit of adventure in the mix. I received a complimentary e-copy of this book. I was not required to write a review and all opinions are completely my own.
This story revolves around several people: a young girl (Eliza) burdened with guilt from the past, a single father (Jim Brooks) struggling to raise his daughter while dealing with his own sadness and feelings of inadequacy, and a young couple (Daniel and Alice) promised to marry but separated for several years. Set in the time of the Gold Rush in California, the author takes the reader on a journey from the gold fields to San Francisco to San Diego to the mountains in Southern California. I had a hard time connecting with the characters in this story and at times found myself wondering why the characters were doing the things they were doing, and that is my reasoning for the three stars. This was my first book by this author, and I think this was her debut novel. I appreciated the author's attempt to incorporate Scripture and Biblical principles into the story, but sometimes it seemed less than natural. And I also appreciated her keeping the story clean.
I really enjoyed this read, we are given a girl who acts and dresses like a boy. She lives in a mining area, and hides from all that he is a she. Her Dad finally bring her to his brother to have her civilized, and my take was she became a spoiled brat! Her heart’s desire though was to be reunited with her father and she goes to all lengths to get there. As she begins a journey to find her Dad, we journey around California during the gold rush, and see it all though the eyes of the author. We are given a look at the not so easy life of a miner, a look at the raw wilderness, and a bit of romance. Throughout the journey we wonder if this young woman will ever be able to find contentment and happiness.
I received this book through Celebrate Lit and the Publisher Wild Heart Books and was not required to give a positive review.
Eliza Brooks needs to find her father—and she will do whatever it takes to do so. This search takes her through Gold-Rush California and brings her Daniel Clarke. Seeing the history, adventure, and romance then come alive as the journey of this stubborn heroine and honorable hero progresses is a pleasure; add in some encouraging faith and character growth, and Waltz in the Wilderness is a book inspirational-historical readers do not want to miss.
I enjoyed this debut from author Kathleen Denly. Her story proves engaging with vivid descriptions and endearing characters, and I cannot wait to read more from her in the future.
I received a complimentary copy of this book and the opportunity to provide an honest review. I was not required to write a positive review, and all the opinions I have expressed are my own.
Waltz in the wilderness was a great story of Eliza and Daniel‘s journey to find her father and also to find themselves. Eliza was this young girl who didn’t really know who she was and Daniel wasn’t sure what he wanted in life. Eliza had insecurities about letting God have the control over her life because she didn’t trust him fully and didn’t think that he listened to her. Daniel had a strong placed faith in God. Eliza was a headstrong, obstinate, stubborn girl who grew into a kind, gentle, loving,(but still stubborn) and beautiful on inside and out woman, and in the beginning of the book, Daniel couldn’t find the answer to the question that he’s been asking himself, but farther into the book, you see him gradually find the answer and him and Eliza kind of grow together. . . . Kathleen Denly has written a wonderful masterpiece ❤️❤️❤️
A wonderful introduction to an author that is new to me, this book just makes me want to read more! The characters are either lovable or you want to shake some sense into them. Eliza is stubborn, headstrong and blaming herself for her mother’s death when she was just a child. Thus she has taken on what she feels is her job - taking care of her father - a tough situation for a young lady to be in. Uncle Henry is just the sweetest and Aunt Celilia is one of those you’d love to shake! Daniel is a gentleman, honest to a fault, a hero that anyone would love. Back in Massachusetts are several other characters that lend credence to my earlier impression of Daniel.
What follows is a story that will have you laughing, sometimes frustrated and certainly wanting to impart some practical wisdom to several of the characters. There is adventure and disaster, suspense and romance in this well researched historical novel. Will the search in the mountains bring the answers Eliza desires?
This e-copy was received through Wild Heart Books and CelebrateLit. The impressions and comments are my own and were in no way solicited.
Headstrong and impetuous, Eliza Brooks leaves the comfort of her uncle’s home to find her father who went to look for work some distance from where she was living. Eliza encounters many dangers along the way, so much so that Daniel Clarke, an acquaintance, chooses to help her locate her father in order to protect her.
I enjoyed the love story of Eliza and Daniel, but felt it moved very slowly. I appreciate that they both stayed true to their faith and convictions. This was what I liked most about both of their characters. This book can be read by readers of all ages for its positive message.
I received a complimentary copy of the book and was not required to write a positive review. All opinions expressed are my own.
This story has an old soul feel to it that is rare these days. Kathleen Denly tells a tale of adventure and love that readers of Christian romance will enjoy. If you are looking for a book with which to introduce your teen to Christian fiction, this is the book you want. Denly adds a few twists that I didn’t expect, and the danger that the hero and heroine find themselves in is real. Speaking of the heroine, she has plenty of spunk to endear readers to her plight, and the hero’s galant manners and loyalty to doing the right thing make him a man any woman would want. When the end comes, Denly wraps up the story as neat as a bow. Readers young and old will love this sweet story, and I’m looking forward to reading more by this author.
