In this volume, we discover the existence of the Shaman Fight that will determine the next Shaman King. This even that only happens every 500 years is now the perfect opportunity for Yoh to achieve the great title possible and live the life he always desired for himself.

We're also introduced to Anna Kyoyama who sure loves to slap people around at such a young age! There's also a story-arc around Tao Ren and his family as Yoh finally showcases more of his Shaman skills.

Wuhuuuuu deg-degan!!

We continue Yoh's adventures and introduce a new character, Anna, who is his Fiancée, all at 13 years old. :) Ah, well, childhood soulmates. We also learn a little about Yoh's childhood and see his good nature, so let's continue to explore the world and learn more about the characters. Let's continue and Keep on Reading.

I have always loved comics, and I have I can. I love comics to bits, may the comics never leave my side. I loved reading this and love reading more, you should also read what you love and hope always to love them. Even though I grew up reading local Indian comics like Raj Comics, Diamond Comics, or even Manoj Comics, now's the time to catch up on international and classic comics and Graphic novels. I am on my quest to read as many comics as I just want to Keep on Reading.

En este segundo tomo conocemos a mi ídola, Anna, y también la historia de Lee Pyron,o como lo conocíamos en el doblaje latino, Lee Bruce Long. Desde el anime su historia me dio pena. Estoy emocionada.

The adventure continues! - now with the introduction of Anna, Yoh's fiance (as arranged by their parents), and Tao Jun, Ren's older sister. Yoh battles an undead kung fu master, we learn how Yoh set out on his journey to become the Shaman King in the first place, and... Ryu continues to look for his "happy place."

The story and characters of this series are really fun, and I am *loving* the art style! I'm excited to read more!

I'm surprised that the chapters in this particular volume are the ones I somehow remember best from my days of reading serial chapter publications in the English editions of Shonen Jump. I certainly didn't recall the events occurring so soon, but perhaps that's just rusty memory; it has been half my lifetime ago that I read them, after all.

That being said, I definitely enjoyed revisiting these chapters in this volume. Meeting Anna is a peculiar thing as an adult; I think as a teenager, yes, she came across as a badass and many of my friends and I wanted to be just like her: cool and tough, and able to keep a guy like Yoh in line. As an adult, I feel like there's a lot more packed into Anna's introduction than we realize, because she strikes me as a character who has more riding on her shoulders than she lets on, and that reveals itself in the things she says, the way in which she acts regarding this need—not want, need—to help shape Yoh into the Shaman King. (I agree with some other reviewers that it's a little strange and perhaps disheartening to see the newly introduced female characters aim for goals to push the males in their lives towards the goal of becoming the Shaman King rather than want that for themselves, but I suppose that I can understand why this is the case.)

Additionally, I'm still a sucker for the story (and budding dynamic) between Tao Jun and Lee Bailong. I feel the volume ends in a way that promises a lot of growth for both of them as individuals and as a team, and I want to see that come to fruition as the story progresses.

While recovering from a vicious attack by a rival shaman, Yoh gets a surprise when his fiancé shows up - a marriage arranged by his parents. Anna Kyoyama is determined that Yoh become the Shaman King and she’s going make sure he trains hard enough to earn the title in the upcoming “Shaman Fight in Tokyo.” But before any of that can happen, a new opponent emerges attempting to wrest the ghost of Amidamaru from Yoh, but this time, she has a zombie that can kill Yoh with powerful kung-fu!

in this second volume of the series, the mythology of the whole thing starts to come forward. We learn what the “Shaman King” is (someone who can use all of the shamanic disciplines and will be able to communicate with the “king of spirits), how he’s chosen (essentially ritual combat), and some of the other types of Shaman are revealed along with their powers. This sets up a premise for the series where Yoh can face a variety of enemies with various powers as the series moves on. While that’s fine, I do hope we have some diversions along the way. I am intrigued by the different types of shaman and their powers. It’s interesting to see these different methods of manipulating and bonding with ghosts and spirits as well as how Takei chooses to visualize the concepts in his art.

The “villain” in this issue is Tao Jun, the sister of Tao Ren from the first volume. She’s a Dao-Shi, or corpse herder - meaning that she uses charmed papers to control zombies. In this case she has the zombie of Lee Bailong, a Chinese movie hero, as her personal ghost. Like her brother, she thinks nothing of basically enslaving ghosts and using them for her personal goals. In fact, her family actually arranged for Bailong’s murder simply to add him to their collection! A very dark, but intriguing idea. It seems this family will be around to menace Yoh for a good portion of this series at the very least.

All of the characters get some development in this book especially Manta and Anna, who each get chapters that highlight them. Manta finds a way to overcome his fearful personality to help out Yoh at one point, and Anna displays her own powers near the end of the story, propelling her past the “annoying girlfriend” stereotype and giving her some actual plot points. She is an Itako, a shaman with the ability to summon ghosts whether it’s those stuck on earth or already passed into heaven. I can see where she will have some interesting potential as the series moves on.

Overall, this is a pretty fun book. The overall concepts are really intriguing and I like the idea of all these different ghosts and spirits interacting with the living world. While this issue mostly focuses on the ghost of Lee Bailong, I feel we’ll get more history and character of more ghosts in the future. The last half of the book is pretty combat heavy, but there is still room for character beats and some humor along the way. I understand there’s a new anime of this series releasing sometime in 2021. I might just have to check that out.

Following up on concepts laid out in its preceding volume, this installment of Shaman King goes almost balls-deep into the "supernatural battle manga" genre. Having been made aware of the Shaman Fight during his encounter with Tao Ren, Yoh undergoes severe training imposed upon him by his fiancee Anna, becoming a decent counter to Ren's sister Jun and her zombified Lee Pyron.

With this volume, Takei continues the trajectory laid by "generic" battle manga. In the first volume, the reader meets Manta and Yoh, and continues through a few brief episodes fleshing out the manga's world a little bit, before getting to Tao Ren and Bason and a greater focus on action. As with all good battle manga, this volume's story builds upon events from its predecessor, introducing not only Tao Jun as a new opponent building upon our initial relation with Tao Ren, but also better expanding the abilities of the shamans in this series by giving us a shaman who can integrate her chosen spirit into his own corpse, guaranteeing 100% synchronization (as relevant to our story -right now-) while also broadening the scope of shaman fighters for the future (foretelling things like Faust and Eliza).

Of course, this volume's main story dabbles a little too greedily with the idea of Yoh as an oblivious/naive hero, and the ultimate defeat of Lee Pyron is a result of Yoh's cheerfulness and friendship with his own ghost (Amidamaru) leading Pyron to first regain consciousness and later snap out of the rage against the Tao family, finally choosing not to pass on to the afterlife, working with Jun and his resurrected corpse to master his martial art style (and kinda-sorta establishing Jun and maybe Ren as allies for the potential future).

Takei's art-direction isn't quite good enough for fight scenes as of currently, but his art-style itself allows for interesting poses and things, somewhat-retroactively improving the storyboarding.

Shaman, n. In animistic religion, a person who communicates with (or is possessed by) Gods, Spirits, and the dead, using magic to cure illness, foretell the future, and influence events. Shamans act as Medicine Men entering into a special trance to borrow these spirits' powers; guides or mediums, forming links between the physical and the spiritual worlds. In ancient times, they were the centers of society, and still are in some cultures today.

Ever since Amazon linked up with comiXology, so that readers could get comics, graphic novels and manga on their kindles, I have been meaning to check out what they had. Under Amazon Prime Reading you get a number of titles for free and this comiXology original is one such series.

The story revolves around a boy called Manta Oyamada, who, whilst cutting through a cemetery in Tokyo to try to catch the last train home after school, runs into a stranger called Yoh Asakura who is talking to ghosts. The next day in school no one will believe Manta's story, even when a new transfer student arrives and is nonother that Yoh. However, Yoh denies their meeting and laughs at the idea of there being ghosts.

This second volume continues the story with Yoh having survived the fight with the seemingly evil shaman, Ren. Recovering in hospital, Yoh must face new challenges when his fiancé turns up and announces he must increase his training in order to become the Master Shaman. We also learn more about Yoh's past, his family's shamanic history, and the dangers facing Tokyo.

Easy to read and engaging, I enjoyed this and it felt just like reading a paperback manga, even on Kindle, as you have to click through the book backwards. A nice little touch. A solid 4* and onto the next volume!

Lovin' the character models. The chinese warlord spirits look like mechs, though...still badass!

Volume 2 basically serves as a Bruce Lee tribute. What I say in paragraph 4 will apply here. I think Shaman King works best when it does not take examples from history. It works best with fictional history and doesn't really cast any sort of light or shade on certain delicate subjects. Bruce Lee is an idol and so I can see how this might rub some folks the wrong way.

I think the author was expressing some love in their own way. It made me smile. I just cringe a little as Bruce’s avatar entered the story and expressed opinions, etc. That’s the stretch.

Two weary things here. It gets borderline religious when drawing comparisons with the Shaman King as a messiah. People may think that's a cool tie-in or that it's negligence. It's reaching a bit for me.

Second, the two new female characters are pretty swell, excepting the fact that their goals are to see it that the males closest to them become Shaman King? Why couldn't one of them reserve that goal for themselves?

These two aren't deal breakers. It just kills the momentum of Shaman King for me. Aside from those two complaints I think I can see why there are 30+ volumes in the series. I’ve seen in other reviews where many people are recommending the anime over the manga. I might have to check that out.

This volume starts to build the cast and crew around Yoh and Manta. Not that we were not introduced to characters like Ryu (Elvis hair style guy) and Ren (Yoh's rival) but the cast and crew grows. Some characters are strictly there to support those trying to be Shaman King and others for different reasons. I thought the Bruce Lee homage section was cool...maybe unnecessary but it was interesting. I feel the Shaman Anna will be the most featured of the newly adds characters in this volume throughout the series. Hiroyuki Takei delivers a great style to match the fun tale. Action is heavy and yet delivers a fun factor that some manga seem to lose.

Volume 2 covers chapters 9-17

After getting knocked out from his last battle with Ren, Yoh’s fiance and fellow shaman shows up to train him in preparation for the upcoming Shaman King tournament which will decide who among them will be chosen as the leader of all shamans. After embarrassing her brother in a close match, Roh’s sister summons the spirit of a powerful kung fu master to test Yoh’s strength and moral conviction.

Not quite as good as the first volume, but Yoh’s fiance is a great new addition to the cast and the lighthearted humor was fun.

Shaman Yoh Asakur, a and his ghost companion samurai, Amidamaru, have experien, ced a battle with Ren and his ghost companion, Bason.
Now Ren's sister, Tao Jun, wants to battle Yoh for Shaman King and her ghost companion is a Kung Fu star with incredible martial art skills.
Yoh just barely out from the hospital and recovering from his recent battle with Ren may not be able to survive this fight.
Another fun filled read.

The second volume expands the mythology, as we discover the various types of shamans there are, learn about oncoming tournament to determine the next Shaman King, and get new characters in the form of Anna, Yoh's fiancee, and Ren's sister. They're great additions, as Anna's rigorous training allows for Yoh to improve his skills, and the ensuing battle gives Yoh the opportunity to show them off. The battle feels like an overlong Bruce Lee tribute, although it's an engaging ride.

Anna is so weird to read. Like, funny and absurd and extreme (for the sake of comedy), but she's a bit of a caricature when she first appears.

Love the Lee Bailong arc. It enhances our understanding of how Yoh wants to use his shamanic ability and provides the twist of exploring other shamanic powers. As an aside, I struggle to believe there are really 33 more volumes after this one; the story moves forward quickly, in these beginning editions.

The longer Oyamada hangs out with Yoh, the more he learn about the strange and dangerous world of Shamans, and the potential they have to defeat even their strongest enemies! Takei gives readers an enjoyable and informative entry to the "Shaman King" series with this engaging continuation. Family is only as strong as its bonds - including those to the dead.

During the end of the chapter is very heart warming. The connection Yoh and Amidamaru have with each other is very strong. When Li Bailong was blinded by rage his master knocks some sense into him. As Jun tried to kill him and take Amidamaru she was in defeat. When Yoh saves Jun from getting hit she realizes how much of a good kid Yoh is.

Second part of a great story of a young shaman, Yoh. We get to meet his "future wife", the first shaman lady, Anna, his new enemies, who turn out not to be as terrible as it may seem (or not as undefeated as it seems to be at the beginning of the story). Exciting fights, well drawn, fun and gripping. I will definitely keep on reading.

Series continues where the last left off, all of the go to Shonen tropes are on display: suddenly there’s a rivalry between Yoh and an evil Shaman of the same age, a fiancé and they’ve started teasing a tournament.

The art style is amazing, honesty they go hard with the title pages for chapters and the Bruce Lee spirit is a great tribute. Couldn’t ask for more from a Shonen series really.

i was a little hesitant after the first volume was kinda dull but i’m starting to turn around (probably because more characters are being introduced and they’re all cool powerful women.) not a fan of manta though i just don’t see his importance to the series other than to give the actual shamans a reason to give exposition. so far he’s done one beneficial thing oooo wow :/

I know this series is partly about spirits, but I'd completely forgotten that there's straight up murder in some cases to get those spirits... it's a fucked up version of pokemon. But to be a bit serious that's really awful, and I get why Yoh is so adament about not giving in to either Ren or Jun. Also Anna is way worse than I remember.
