Death and Moonlight #1

Step Into My Web

Rate this book
Step into my web…and you’ll never get out.

Chloe Hastings doesn’t like rules, and she doesn’t exactly play well with others. But she does have one amazing talent—she can get into the mind of killers like no one else. A police consultant and profiler, Chloe is definitely not like anyone that Joel Landry has ever encountered. From the moment they meet—in the middle of a bank robbery—she throws him off balance and pulls him under spell. She seems to have no fear, she plots constantly, and…Joel quickly finds himself trapped in her web.

She needs a new partner…and he’s just the man for the job.

There’s a sadistic killer hunting in the streets of New Orleans, and Chloe plans to catch him. First, though she needs a partner she can trust, and she’s decided that Dr. Joel Landry is the best fit for the job. Sure, he has a dark past. The doctor was attacked by a serial killer, but Joel survived while his attacker did not. Now the ruggedly handsome doctor has turned to the shadows. He’s learned how to hunt, how to fight, how to kill in a thousand brutal ways—in short, he’s acquired all of the skills that Chloe absolutely adores in a man.

He’s exactly what she wants. She could become the only thing he needs.

Together, they should be a perfect fit. She knows the minds of criminals better than anyone else, and Joel can protect her from any threat that comes their way. They’ll have one hell of a time tracking down the bad guys, provided Chloe and Joel don’t kill each other first. Another unanticipated twist for the new partners? Their attraction to each other is explosive, their desire uncontrollable. One reckless kiss seals their fate, and their need won’t be denied.

And neither will the killer who waits for his moment to attack.

Once you step into a spider’s web, there is no going back.

Author’s Note: Chloe Hastings always has a plan in play. Her investigations are unusual, her friends are generally on the shady side, and her social skills? Well, those are pretty much non-existent. But Chloe solves every case that crosses her path, and she never, ever backs down. When she teams up with her new partner, all bets are off. Joel is gorgeous, sinful, and about to break through every wall that Chloe possesses. He’ll fight for her, she’ll fight for him, and the criminals in their path had better get ready. There is a new crime-solving team in town.

And this is why I will never ever question why Cynthia Eden is on my one-click list! Step Into My Web was on the right side of creepy (if creepy could be right) and gave me the thrilling story I was looking for.

After surviving an attack by a serial killer, Dr. Joel Landry was trying to get by. Surviving but not really living. He was scarred both physically and emotionally and Chloe Hastings believed she could offer him a way back. Be her partner. Help her catch a killer. Fall in love. No biggie.

There was so much to love about this story:
⭐ Chloe's mind, her secrets,her insights
⭐ Joel's strength and determination, his fight, his integrity, his endurance
⭐ the side characters that made their team — I hope to see more of them
⭐ the killings. I was seriously caught up in trying to find connections and didn't quite figure out whodunit until it was shown to me. I love to be kept guessing!

My only issue was the part about Chloe's ex, Morgan, who seemed to warrant more of an explanation. However, knowing that there will be another book, I'm hoping it will provide all that I found missing. I will definitely be one-clicking Save Me From the Dark when it releases in April.

3.5 Stars.

I’m used to of CE’s ott crazy insta-love/lust and this one was a bit more of a slow burn. And I also feel like there’s barely any chemistry between them two, that if it’s there’s any.
I didn’t like the hero, he was like detached. He said that he wanted the heroine but he didn’t showed it.
Liked the heroine, she was cool and all but the secret she was keeping from him was not ok.

Also if you think this is a standalone then you’re very wrong, I thought so and I was pissed because I wasn’t expecting a cliffy. So be aware of that if you go into this book thinking you’ll get a HEA.

It’s been a while since I read a Cynthia Eden thriller.
And I thoroughly enjoyed it. Her books always reminds me how much darkness and twisted minds are there in the world.

A kickass heroine who is the coolest and most observant person ever. I loved her quirks and her personality. At first glance I thought hero was a beta but as usual appearances can be deceptive in this author’s books. Hero was a complete match for the heroine.
I just wished the murder motive was a little more mind blowing.

Safe and recommended.

Chloe is one of the most unique heroines I’ve read, and I’ve read a few originals lately, and I’m loving what I hope is the new trend. She has an ability that has an eerie paranormal feel to it and that had me holding my breath to find out what her whole story was. While she might not physically be able to keep up with the big guys, holy heck, was she more than capable of beating them at the mind games.

Jess and Ann

Joel was wounded in a way that I never expected, especially for a hero, and it set him up to be the perfect counter point to Chloe. With all the trademark Eden characteristics for an alpha hero to go along with his insecurities, I first laughed at his initial response to Chloe and then fell in love with him as he began to be pulled into her world.

Step Into My Web is one action packed adventure filled with mystery, suspense and drama that kept me turning the pages, going backwards to reread what I had just read (because it was just that good) and anxiously trying to figure it out before the end. I couldn’t. This has such an original plot with characters that kept me engaged from the first page and an ending that, I hope, gives us a promise of more to come. While I’d love for each one of Chloe’s cohorts to have their own story, I’d also love to have more of her and Joel as well.

Romantic suspense just doesn’t get any better than this!

Chloe was such a cool and interesting character. I normally read this authors books for her heroes because I love the dedicated and possessive heroes she brings. Which Joel totally was, but in this book, Chloe is the one that shined.

I really love those heroines who are extremely intelligent, tells it like it is, and proves that a woman can be just as good, if not better than men in a male dominated job.

At first it seems that Chloe might have high functioning autism but when you find out about her childhood, I think she just learned her behavior in order to survive. Maybe it's a mix of both. Either way she was unique and fun watch to follow along as she un-puzzled the mystery behind the killings.

I will admit, I guessed the wrong murderer which I like since it wasn't predictable. I also really enjoyed the side characters and would love to see more books with them. I am happy we will get another book with Chloe and Joel.

2.5 MEH STARS

So I don't know what happened here, as an avid Cynthia Eden fan I was psyched to see this. Killers, a smart heroine and a hero with a few shadows

Lacked the sizzle and spark I was hoping for. Joel's interest in Chole felt lacklustre at best, there was a sense of detachment to his character that had me loosing focus and unable to invest in the story or relationship development. The tension and sense of danger I was hoping for didn't materialise.

Ends on a tiny cliffy, sadly I don't see myself going back for book two.

First and foremost, I liked this book. This author regularly delivers on her romantic suspense in terms of the suspense. Twists and turns that usually surprise you in the end with some human characters.

What I didn't like: Chloe. At first she was charming and sardonic like a Sherlock Holmes. But she quickly wore down my nerves with her constant game playing, manipulation, and I know all attitude. Joel was rightfully upset multiple times and she was always so quick to be offended when called out by her own actions. If you can't crack your walls even a little, how can you expect others to even try and react any differently?

The twists were good. Though, there was so much reader manipulation that I grew frustrated keeping threads separate. The twist in the preview for the sequel was not unexpected given how every person was phrasing discussing the situation in this book. I'll definitely read it but I hope for a bit more likeability in Chloe.

Wow this book certainly started as it meant to go on and no mistake ! Joel is a survivor of an horrific attack that almost killed him . He is a lost soul in a very dark place when he meets the most perplexing and gorgeous woman who challenges everything he thinks is right.
Chloe understands more about murderers and psychopaths then even the police do ! She's a consultant after yet another serial killer but Chloe has her own twisted secrets too .
I had no idea where this story was going and absolutely loved that Chloe poleaxed everyone around her. Initially I thought she might be on the autistic spectrum because her behaviour and ways of thinking and communicating were very unusual. Yes I think it fair to say that I found Chloe very intriguing. Alas I just didn't fall for Joel and found the romance and his obsession with Chloe to be too instant but I can see that there's a lot more to find out about this couple and the characters who supported this story.
This voluntary take is of an advanced copy and my thoughts and comments are honest and I believe fair

I thoroughly enjoyed Step Into My Web. Chloe was a great character who I absolutely loved. Her intelligence was impressive and her quick whit had me chucking through the whole book. I was very confused about her from the beginning. I couldn't figure out what happen to her or what her abilities where, if any. It was entertaining and kept me engaged in the story. When I finally found out what her situation was, it all made sense and I was pleased with where Ms Eden took the character.

We find out most things about Joel right from the beginning and because of Chloe we continued to find out tidbits about his life throughout the book, much to Joel's dismay. I felt bad for him but I admired his courage and strength and quickly grew to love him.

The chemistry between Chloe and Joel was off the charts. The first time they met, they knew something was happening but like most they ignored it. However, that didn't last long. It only took one moment and it was over for them. They burned up the pages.

This story was exciting and full of surprises. The best part is I honestly had no idea who was doing what until the end. Definitely kept me on my toes. This just might be my new favorite from Ms Eden. I highly recommend this read for anyone who likes romantic suspense.

WOW I always love Cynthia's books but this one is by far the best she has written it is much darker than what she usually writes and I have to say that I love that. There are so many twists and turns in this book that at times I almost felt like I had whiplash but at the same time I couldn't put it down always wanting to know what was going to happen next This is a book that you don't want to start late at night because you will get no sleep because either you will be reading all night or listening to every creak and groan of your house

Chloe helps the police department solve murders she has a memory that never forgets any clue and she can pull them back up at any time to make the connections that are needed to solve crimes and at the moment she is on the trail of a serial killer in New Orleans She needs a partner and when she meets Dr. Joel Landry she knows he is the one He survived a serial killer and the killer didn't survive and after that he made sure that he would be able to survive if he was ever attacked again so he is the perfect partner to keep Chloe alive and safe. But she has secrets and the twists and turns come from them because while they are tracking a killer they are also fighting the attraction between them but can they have a future when they both are keeping secrets.

Chloe and Joel both have secrets and talents that they try and hide from others. As much as he doesn’t think he wants Chloe, Joel can’t stop the course they have been set upon. Great witty banter and a story full of intrigue and twists and turns. I really enjoyed this story! Chloe is a smart and worthy heroine.

This was an okay romantic suspense. There's a Sherlock Holmes aspect to the heroine and some instalove vibes. I didn't particularly connect with either main character but enjoyed some of the colorful secondary characters. The mystery was decent but didn't keep me guessing right up to the reveal.

Review posted on Got Fiction? book blog

This story has a different feel to it than some of her other series. It seems to be book one in a series with the same couple. I am intrigued.

Joel Landry is at the bank when he notices several things at once. There’s a gorgeous woman, a man who’s trying to rob the bank, and the gorgeous woman is about to get herself killed chatting with the bank robber.

Chloe Hastings is chatting with the robber because she’s going to catch him. She’s not a cop, she’s more of an outside consultant, and the robbery gone wrong is not necessarily her end-game. She needs a new partner. She wants it to be Joel. But he’s not a cop or a detective either…he’s a doctor. Or at least he was, once. Before…

Joel was kidnapped from his hospital and tortured by a serial killer. He escaped and killed the man responsible, but he was never able to really go back to his old life. So he’s sitting around in limbo with what he wants to do. Can he move on? Does he even want to?

This book is different than most Romantic Thrillers out there in that the hero has survived a serial killer, and the heroine is the rich and manipulative but it’s for his own good type person. I liked how Chloe was several steps ahead of everyone else at all times. She comes off as maybe on the spectrum? She has a unique perception of everything around her and is able to see things others don’t. Including the fact that Joel would make a good partner for her. He spends a lot of the book trying to understand Chloe, and once he actually “gets” her, once he understands how she thinks and behaves and why, he falls even more in love with her.

The teaser in the back of the book shows that the series will continue to focus on Chloe and Joel and not move on to another couple. Ms. Eden has only done this once before with her Paranormal Romance series Blood and Moonlight, so I’m excited to see where this goes. With an intelligent heroine who runs the show, and a hero who is slowly healing from his past, the author gives us the most intriguing and interesting crime solving duo I’ve seen in years.

I've Read Better.

Whenever I see a book written by Cynthia Eden it's an automatic download for me and up until now I'm usually riveted by the storyline. Sadly this book didn't hit the spot, in fact I struggled to finish it. Needless to say I won't buy another in this series.

4 Satisfied Stars for STEP INTO MY WEB, a standalone Suspense Romance Mystery/Thriller novel that kept me guessing til the end.

MY RATING GUIDE: 1= dnf/What was that?; 2= Nope, not for me; 3= This was okay/cute; 3.5= I enjoyed it; 4= I LIKED IT A LOT; 5= I Loved it, it was great! (I seldom give 5 Stars).

POSSIBLE SPOILERS > Chloe Hastings/FMC, 5’8”, is an English born woman, late 20-30’s, currently living in New Orleans. She has a PhD in psychology and dual masters in forensic psychology and abnormal psychology. As an independent criminal profiler, she consults with various police departments pursuing killers. Chloe hates rules and prefers to work alone. She speaks directly, reads people carefully, is extremely observant and excellent at drawing obscure yet accurate conclusions, and blessed (or not) with an eidetic memory. She has a scary ability to slip into the mind of killers yet remaining absolutely fearless. Chloe discovered her parents dead in pools of blood one morning, when she was young, the result of an apparent robbery. Chloe is concerned by many as being extremely odd, yet she has gathered around her a small and loyal group of friends. She is currently recovering from a badly ended relationship.

Dr Joel Landry/MMC, 6’3”, is the surviving victim of a serial killer. He was a young practicing surgeon at the time of his harrowing assault but following his near-deadly ordeal abruptly resigned his position and began focusing on mastering all methods of self-defense - various martial art disciplines, knowledge with knives and firearms - while withdrawing into a solitary world filled with nightmares and flashes of claustrophobia. Through a bizarre occurrence, Chloe meets Joel. She convinces him to assist her with her current murder investigation involving a serial killer. Out of curiosity and a desire to temporarily escape the darkness in which Joel barely exists, he accepts.
< END POSSIBLE SPOILERS.

I was impressed with STEP INTO MY WEB. I wasn’t sure what to expect not having read any of Eden’s work previously. Rather than an information dump, the characters’ back stories were effortlessly slipped in while the action kept me flipping pages and guessing what might happen next. I found myself routing for Joel and Chloe even before I exactly knew who they were as people. The twists made it fun. I prefer humor and less dark novels. STEP INTO MY WEB danced on the edge of my “darkness/psychological thriller” limit but didn’t toss me over. ;). Another reader mentioned that Chloe & Dr Joel reminded them of JD Robb’s characters and I don’t disagree but they are also distinctly different. The angst level (I prefer less) was also within my preference. A book #2 follows - SAVE ME FROM THE DARK. I may pick it up but I was very happy with the ending here and really don’t wish to dive into a pit of angst in bk#2, which I’m afraid my occur. Again, simply my “less drama” preference. I have marked it for purchase in case it goes on Sale and have also added a couple other titles by Eden into my tbr stack.

Readers of Thrillers, Contemporary Suspense Romance novels and police detection Suspense novels may wish to check out STEP INTO MY WEB. I found it a well written and clever page-turner.

*READER CAUTIONS - NOT RECOMMENDED FOR READERS who prefer CLEAN fiction or for YA readers.
PROFANITY - Yes. Strong language is used on occasion.
VIOLENCE - Yes. This is a serial killer investigation with rather detailed medical examiner comments. The overall tone, however, isn’t particularly dark.
SEXUAL SITUATIONS - Yes. Detailed intimacy scenes occur several times.

A romance with touches of the Sherlock series that won me over

OK for a Cynthia Eden book, I didn't expect to laugh so much xD I usually freak out, worry, squeal ... But here we have an original heroine who made me laugh =) (she reminded me a lot of Sherlock Holmes in the British series Sherlock with her quirky British side !)

I loved the two main characters who are so tortured (Joel's past is so horrible just like Chloe's that we discover little by little ...) but who found each other (best first meeting, it made me laugh so much =D) but also the secondary characters (special mention for Ruben who made me laugh so much !) and the plot b> fascinated me (stressful until the end ! I love having the point of view of other victims !)

In short, a surprising romance that makes you laugh as much as stress =D For fans of series like Sherlock or Elementary, I recommend it !

Wow. Cynthia Eden does not disappoint.

After reading Wilde Ways #12 and finding this new story at the very end, I figured it will be something similar. But although it had badass characters, it was completely different.

I loved this mystery. Throughout the whole book, I had to ask questions and resist the temptation to jump to the end and find out what and who and how - which is a sign of a great mystery book.

Chloe is odd, she's got skills that make people look at her sideways and keep their distance. Joel, though warned to stay away, didn't listen, and boy, am I glad. Their whole partnership is explosive from the start, from the very beginning at the bank. Joel Landry is a man with a traumatic experience in the past that keeps its hold on him strongly. That's the true meaning of PTSD, anytime and anywhere, his nightmare memories can overwhelm him. A lone man on the road to self-destruction. And Chloe is his savior.

She involves him in a chase after a killer, something she's done before but never with a partner quite like Dr. Landry. Their attraction is off the charts - the kind that makes an electric sizzle strike your body at the gentlest touch - and it makes the story all the more interesting. A promise to keep separate professional from private means nothing, really, when you want the person as much as you want to catch the killer. Or more.

I couldn't predict much and never far into the future, something kept surprising me, new discoveries and secrets and moments from the past. People weren't who they said they were, others were who they wouldn't admit they were. It was a wonderful maze of intrigue, murder, passion, love, and secrets. And the teaser for the second book really makes me want to speed up time until Death and Moonlight #2 is ready to be read.

Good

Chloe Hastings is different. She doesn’t think like anyone else, but her ability to track the evil that commits violent crimes is unparalleled.
Joel Landry was once a surgeon, until he became the victim of an unspeakable crime.
When he meets Chloe, he has no idea that this is a woman who will change his life. She challenges him to help her in her criminal consulting, helping her find a serial killer, and to stay ahead of the danger that seems to follow them everywhere…

Chloe is a fascinating character, with a Holmes like outlook on life, and a Machiavellian tendency towards plotting and planning everything, every step in her life. She’s tough in unusual ways, and a hard character to like simply because she keeps her cards close to her chest.
Joel is a survivor, one who has suffered, and I suspect that he had more yet to come. Chloe becomes very much a lifeline for him, helping him to see things far more clearly than he had been seeing for a long time.
Together with Chloe’s other rescues, they are a formidable team, and one that makes for a compelling read.
This is an enjoyable suspense/thriller, with lots of action, and a smidgen of romance thrown in. There are several mysteries at work through the book, and only one of them is actually solved by the end of it. The characters themselves remain somewhat mysterious, as their stories are slowly revealed through the course of the book, and even then the reader feels that they still don’t know everything.

This engaging book is an enjoyable trip into the dangerous world of Chloe Hastings, and is recommended for romantic suspense/thriller fans.

Dr. Joel Landry a well known surgeon was attacked and survived but still has nightmares he's learned to hunt, how to fight in brutal ways become one with the shadows.
Chloe & Joel meet in a bank where a robbery is happening he steps into protect her something she doesn't need she knows who he is and what he's been through she needs a partner she can trust there's a sadistic serial killer hunting the streets of New Orleans they'd be the perfect pair to track him down.

I received a complimentary copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

This is the first book in a new series by Cynthia Eden. It is about two troubled people whose lives have been greatly affected by their pasts. They are both antisocial and have trouble relating to other people. This story follows them as they start out just working together. Eventually they fall in love as they help each other overcome their issues.

Chloe has the ability to understand killers so much that it seems as if she is able to get into their minds. She works with the police and manages to help them solve many difficult cases. However, she does not work well with others because she doesn’t care about anyone’s feelings, nor does she care whether, or not, they like her.

Chloe meets Joel during a bank robbery. Afterward, she immediately picks him to be her new partner. Years ago he had been attacked by a serial killer. Even though he was able to survive, he never got over it.

Chloe and Joel investigate several deaths by an unknown serial killer. The author skillfully creates a complex plot with lots of twists and turns. Her clues lead the readers on a wild goose chase with lots of dead ends. Plus, there is an unexpected surprise ending.

Meanwhile Chloe and Joel discover that their chemistry together is explosive. Their lovemaking is wild and steamy.

This is an exciting page-turner with non-stop action and intrigue.

I have to admit that the first half was a little bit boring, not too boring, just a little bit. Maybe because the first half is the introduction to the case, not much action here, not too thrilled, most of things were still blurry. But, the second half is very good.

There are a lot of psychological aspects in this book. The hero was a serial killer survivor and the heroine had her family murdered.

The main characters are likable. Joel is sometimes rude, but deep inside he always wants to save other peoples. While Chloe is a perfectionist, genius, but she does not arrogant. It is just that she is manipulative and often takes advantages of other peoples. It's not bad. She does not have bad intention. She is also kind by how she took Reese and Marie in. Each of them is lonely. Together they become family that they can rely on each other. And in the end she also makes an offer to Cinnamon.

Their relationship? I like how their relationship developed. They are willing to protect each other. I like their interaction.

I guessed the killer correctly because he was useless in the book. Why did he even be introduced in the book? For what purpose? So, the reason must be that he is the killer. There are quite a lot characters here. Of course they have their own role for the story development, except that one, the killer. That is why I thought he is the killer.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

Dr Joel Landry is still reeling from his brush with death when Chloe Hastings storms into his life. A highly intelligent woman with multiple psychology degrees under her belt, Chloe Hastings is a force to be reckoned with - and a killer's worst nightmare. But she wants a partner and Joel is her first choice. Even if Joel isn't quite sure he should go with the crazy lady.

This was an enjoyable romantic suspense read. The plot was decently complex and kept me invested in finding out who the killer was and discovering all of Chloe's secrets. The romance between Chloe and Joel was typical of the genre - instant attraction and lacking in emotional development but it was alright. I did like that it wasn't exactly instalove - they both were attracted but didn't quite jump into the deep end until they were further along.

Chloe was a bit robotic at the start but it was honestly what I liked most about her. The way she managed to separate herself from her emotions and be more analytical was a draw. I like Joel well enough. The rest of the characters were great. I loved how Chloe had built this little family up around her - her brother, Reece, her rescued assassin, Marie, the coroner, Reuben and the police detective, Cedric Coleman.

Another solid romantic suspense with a darker edge from Cynthia Eden. 4 stars.

Joel and Chloe have a dark past that involves death. Chloe has an eidetic mind allowing her to remember everything, all the clues, the people involved, etc. helping the police solve crimes. Chloe is working on a series of murders when she meets Joel.

Joel used to be a surgeon until something horrific happened to him. He is going through the motions of each day until Chloe slams into his life. He finds that working with her helps bring him back to life. Will their ability to put clues together help them catch the bad guy in time?

You never know what world you are going to be stepping into when you pick up a Cynthia Eden book, Step Into My Web is no different. I loved Chloe's ability to step up and tell the truth no matter what. While these two characters continued to snark at each other you could feel the chemistry start to build, I feel helping them work together better. The supporting characters, didn't feel like they were supporting the main characters but an integral part of the story. This book is packed full of nail biting suspense, explosive chemistry, bad guys, and family. I was sad to see it end but am so glad we get to see more of these characters!
