Melissa Collins has always been a book worm. Studying Literature in college ensured that her nose was always stuck in a book. She followed her passion for reading to the most logical career choice: English teacher. Her hope was to share her passion for reading and the escapism of books to her students. Having spent more than a decade in front of a classroom, she can easily say that it’s been a dream.
Her passion for writing didn’t start until more recently. When she was home on maternity leave in early 2012, she read her first romance novel and her head filled with the passion, angst and laughter of the characters who she read about it. It wasn’t long before characters of her own took shape in her mind. Their lives took over Melissa’s brain and The Love Series was born.

On Higher Ground is the sequel to On Solid Ground. The blurb confused me because I honestly thought this was a series, not a sequel. I thought we were getting two new characters. Whoops, my bad! So, a reminder to all, this can NOT be read as a stand-alone.

I enjoyed On Solid Ground and rated it 4 stars. It had a few stumbles, but the mixture of military men, PTSD, tattoos, a service dog named Tonka, a child and hurt/healing/comfort made up for the flaws. I feel the same way about book 2. It has all the elements of the first book (including blistering hot sex), but with new angst and stumbles. Of course there is a HEA, duh!

My recommendation is that if you have already read On Solid Ground and liked it, you will enjoy this continuation of Dax and Beck and Violet and Tonka's story. Love wins in the end!

Recommended.

*** Amazing, loving, astounding gay romance story ! *** Melissa Collins hit it out of the park here ! This tremendous tale is beautifully written, with deeply stunning characters, and a superb and artful telling of a wonderful love. Here we have Dax, Beck, and Violet from On Solid Ground, and this is their second part of the story that wraps them up in a big terrific ribbon.
Dax is back from war with severe PTSD, and has Tonka,

his brown Lab service dog.
Beck is now expanding his Tattoo shops and they have custody of Beck's dead sister's girl, Violet. She's an amazing child. A mix of past episodes and present fears are solid.
These two beautiful souls examine their wants and needs

for their small family, love is ever present, as the guys move forward, step by step. They are trying to plan a wedding, deal with the sudden letter from Beck's long lost father, nightmares, adjusting to home life, work, and school, plus considering adding another child.

All of them still have issues dealing with Nikki's death, where Dax and Tonka took a bullet for Violet and saved her. Much is happening, you are riveted, and through it all, the thread of steadfast love shines. Being there for each other is paramount. Beautifully and deliciously written, with super hotness, and sexy M/M loving, a well paced plot that holds our hearts, and as Melissa knows how to do, she gives us the pulse of our amazing characters hearts.

Highly recommended ! ENJOY !!

5 Stars to this AMAZING story - This story is Dax and Beck's life, Love, and Reality as they build their family This is book 2 in the On Solid Ground Series and must be Read after book one and in order, you cannot read as a standalone. In this book we catch up with Dax and Beck and see what they have been up to since we left them in book one and of course, Violet & Tonka Too!

I enjoyed this story and watching how Dax and Beck settled into the roles of insta-Dads along with how they were as a couple. In addition it was nice seeing how Dax was doing with his dog training and then of course we get to find out if they are going to get married and what else is going on in their lives. It's an emotional book with lots of love and lots or hot sex!

Hot kisses, hard nips, strong hands –we’re one and the same. One body moving together in this erotic dance, racing toward a blindingly hot finish....This is more than just sex –no matter how many weeks it’s been. This is about making him know he belongs to me....Slapping bodies. Heavy breathing. Groans and grunts of pleasure. The silent I love yous. Those are the only sounds in the room. The only sounds needed....His forehead presses against mine, giving me the perfect opportunity to wrap my hand around the back of his neck to pull him closer. The second before I take his lips, I say, “Mine,” reminding him of everything my body just told him.

This is a book that will stay with you for days after you read it because these characters are just that amazing and the story is both emotional and erotic it's multidimensional in a way that not a lot of authors pull off, so do yourself a favor and read this series -- you won't regret it!

I leave you with this moment between Dax and Bek...*swoon*

“Thank you for that. For you. For loving me and all my brokenness.”

5 Stars!

“You’re mine, and I’m yours. That’s all that matters. All that ever has and all that ever will. “

We first met Dax and Beck in On Solid Ground when we followed the relationship of Dax and Beck as they dealt with their painful pasts. The passion, emotion and pain between these two hitting us right in the heart.

Beck had to deals with his painful upbringing and Dax was coming to terms with his sexuality whilst coping with grief, loss and PTSD. We championed these guys and loved witnessing the progression of their feelings as they worked their way through their issues.

In, On Higher Ground, we meet up with them as they’re preparing to take their relationship to the next level by planning to get married whilst also raising Becks adorable niece, Violet – they’ve become a family and want to bind that by declaring their love officially.

“I needed to figure out my past before chasing my future.”

Melissa Collins has once again delivered a story filled with emotion and love whilst highlighting some very real issues, conveying the struggle PTSD on the sufferer and their families.

Life is on track for these guys with Beck’s Tattoo studio taking off and Dax finding his feet by successfully assisting Veterans through the Canine program and little Violet fitting in and settling into their lives perfectly. This was one loved and adored little lady.

However, unbeknownst to Beck, Dax’s nightmares have returned causing him to retreat into himself. Beck, in turn, walks on eggshells around Dax, afraid to confront him to ascertain what is bothering him. Miscommunication ensues with neither Beck or Dax able to broach and discuss the distance they feel is coming between them and it is through this we are able to properly see them cement their relationship. Sometimes it’s easier to open up to strangers then it is to the ones we love and Dax and Beck do struggle in this regard.

‘For all the pain I’d felt in my life, I would relive it all, live in it forever if it meant that I could take away what he’d been through.’

We loved much of this story and have loved sharing the journey with Dax, Beck, Violet, their friends and family, it’s a beautiful story of love, trust and acceptance.

‘I know I’ll always have that solid ground under my feet. Now, all I need is the courage to reach higher.’

The ending was perfection and had us clutching our kindles with tears in our eyes. What a fitting place in which to leave these beautiful men who have stolen our hearts.

Molto dolce.

Joint review with fellow reviewer Lisa.

Lisa: On Higher Ground by Melissa Collins is the continuation of Jacob “Dax” Daxton and Beckett Ridge’s (a.k.a. Beck) love story, two beloved characters that we met in On Solid Ground (book one). I have a confession to make. Ready, Mark? I usually HATE when authors decide to continue a story about the same characters in a second book, particularly when the said characters have already gotten their happy ending. So, why in the heck would I decide to dive right into this book you may ask? Well…. It’s really simple, actually. Melissa Collins. That’s it. This author can honestly write the phone book and I would read it. And, I am so glad that I did not say no to reading this one. Catching up with Dax, Beck and Violet was everything! Seeing the two men continue to move forward from their traumatic pasts simply solidified just how much I love these two characters that have etched themselves right onto my heart. What were your initial thoughts, Mark?

Mark: HAHA – I’m with you all the way on the phone book, Lisa! And I know where you’re coming from with continuing a second book when we already had a happy ending in the first. But for me personally I always think that once our MCs have gone skipping off into the sunset with their HEA and we’re all left with rainbows, unicorns and the fuzzies in our hearts, I’m always a little curious as to know how things develop from here. As we all know, when the honeymoon phase is over and real life kicks in, that’s when the hard work starts! The trial and tribulations of mastering everyday life with a relationship, a marriage, family and kids, how do we cope with these things? And it’s exactly because of all these reasons I couldn’t wait to get stuck into this book. After the “happy ever after” is reached this is when life’s true adventures really begins. Melissa does a WONDERFUL job in showing us all that although you have found your soulmate and partner for life the work doesn’t stop there. You have to constantly work at it. It’s all about understanding, patience, forgiveness, support, a healthy amount of jealousy, having a tantrum and letting off steam, but despite all this knowing that the love and respect for your partner will always be there. So even though there is no heavy angst in this book, as you know Dax and Becks are inseparable, all the above elements will still be found in spades. Let the adventure begin!

Lisa: This story picks up approximately one and a half years after we leave both men in On Solid Ground. Dax and Beck are engaged and have been for a while; however, no date for the wedding has been set. They are somewhat stuck in this awkward limbo, happy to be in a relationship with one another but not moving forward either. Dax, our honourable soldier who has lived through so much, continues to struggle with his PTSD and is experiencing a lot of nightmares. Beck is his rock, his support, but even with his partner right by his side, Dax has no idea if he will ever be able to overcome his demons and fully heal. He loves Beck and Violet with all of his heart and soul. He just doesn’t know if he deserves them. Here is a man who has served his country and he is still lost, trying so hard to deal with the after effects of his time in the Army as well as attempting to cope with PTSD. Beck and Dax met at a time in their life when everything was chaotic and muddled for both of them. They found a beauty they never dreamed possible in their messy circumstances. Can Beck prove to Dax just how much he sees him as a strong and protective man and that their little family is enough? Can they even get past this latest hurdle and truly take the remaining steps towards a future that includes forever?

Mark: I hear you on Dax’s issues Lisa and they made my heart ache, really. But I’m going to look at things from Becks’ view point. What do you do when the man you love and want to spend the rest of your life with just doesn’t want to make that final commitment? Yes, Becks is Dax’s rock, his solid ground, but he wants to get married. No little thing either when you consider his background too, but he has no illusions that this is right. I could feel his frustration and exasperation with Dax at times and totally understand it. You’ve just got engaged and at some point the plan is to get married. I don’t think Becks’ idea was to stay engaged for the rest of his life. So as much as I understood Dax and his issues I found his attitude on this a little self-centred or self-absorbed too. I could also totally relate to Becks to the extent where I just wanted to give Dax a slap for being such a pussy. I just wanted to shake him and say, “For goodness sake just do it already! You have nothing to lose and everything to gain you honk!” So yes, as understanding and supportive as anyone likes to be, but like Becks would you also be prepared to spend the rest of your life engaged? Big sigh of relief though from me when Dax pulls through, gets his act together and makes an honest man out of Becks – lol! I sat there with my Kindle, let out a big breath I was holding back while uttering the words, “Thank goodness. About damn time!”

Lisa: I think this book honestly made me fall in love with Dax, Beck and little Violet all over again. I simply LOVED how Beck, the rough and gritty tattoo artist with a harsh upbringing, was so supportive of Dax. You can feel his love for Dax (and, frankly, the love both men had for each other) transcend the pages. This story honestly reminded me that any strong and stable relationship is going to take work. Lot’s of it. If you truly love someone, you will fight for them, stand by them and be their anchor when they need you the most. When things get hard, you do not walk away. I loved the raw honesty between both men, how they were so open and vulnerable with one another. That took great courage. Anything real and worth it is always going to be messy and Dax and Beck certainly exemplify this as they muddle their way through the “tough stuff”.

This story is very much a journey. It showed us just how far Dax and Beck have come but it also revealed just how much healing still needed to take place, especially with Dax himself. I simply adored how this book was so much more than the continuation of a love story for our two protagonists. It’s also a tale about family. Seeing Dax and Beck be the best parents they could be for little Violet, who is still going through a lot herself, simply melted my heart. Gah! Their little family definitely had a lot of obstacles in their path, but they definitely had each other and that never faltered.

Mark: Exactly Lisa! A tale about family, in all its facets. I would like to pick up on the parenting role illustrated perfectly in this book. Even today I very often hear the statement that a child needs the classic roles of a mother and a father to be well adjusted. This statement always makes me a little angry as it just negates many things and puts the parents first and not the child. What a child needs above all is love, support, stability, routines, encouragement and attention. This Victoria gets from Dax and Becks in spades. She is the centre of their universe and rules it – lol! These two big guys are reduced to putty in her hands and they would both lay down their lives for their little girl. They have the same hopes and fears of any parent. Constantly asking themselves if they’re doing right by her all the time, second guessing themselves on whether what they’re doing is OK. Coping with the routines of getting her to school in the mornings, getting meals on the table, driving her to dancing classes, various clubs and friends while trying to fit in work and jobs too. The normal things that any parent will understand. But it’s in this constant questioning of whether you are doing the right thing that gives Victoria all the love and attention she needs and drives Dax and Becks on to be the best parents they can be. Victoria gets lots of “girl time” on her own too with Becks’ friend Chloe and Dax’s boss Heather, so there is also no lack of positive female role models in her life either. Another thing that Dax and Becks make happen. And what is the result? A well adjusted, adorable little girl, who happens to have two dads with all the love and attention she could ever wish for. And we all know secretly how most fathers are complete saps when it comes to daughters or “their little princess” and here Victoria has two. Wouldn't like to think what a future boyfriend will have to go through to prove himself worthy to Dax and Becks that he’s good enough for their little girl – lol!

Lisa: All in all I absolutely loved On Higher Ground from beginning to end. It is an emotional and beautiful tale about fighting for love and family. When I finished the book I had a huge smile on my face. That is the sign of a wonderful romance, a book that leaves me happily sighing. Even though this book left me in romance la la land, it was so much more than a simple romance. It’s about pure, unadulterated love. The kind that you bleed for and cry for. It’s the kind that takes a hold of you and never lets go. It is also the kind that you build a family on.

Mark: ……. and Amen to that Lisa!

I felt like this book wasn't necessary but it was a good addition. I didn't mind at all and I enjoyed this Duology.

I really want to read the next book in the series but that's about another character.

This is a review of the On Solid Ground Duet
4.5 stars--Part one: On Solid Ground:
Love is love...and these guys had no idea they were about to find it when they least expected it and that it would change the course of their lives. Beck is an edgy, rough around the edges tattoo artist and Dax is a struggling, anxiety-ridden war hero. They meet just by chance. Both are lost. Both have suffered tragedy, loss, and guilt from their past. Both are broken and putting on a facade for those around them. But their connection and chemistry shatters their walls and opens them up to vulnerability and intimacy that they have been missing. They still have struggles, fears, and issues to deal with. They have internal scars and their lives are not simple or easy. They have to decide if it is better to avoid bringing their troubles to someone else, or if it is better trying to face them together rather than alone.

This is a challenging love story of two men finding their missing pieces and trying to become whole again. It is told in dual points of view allowing us to see deep into their hearts and minds. They are strong but lovable men with big hearts, but each has emotional baggage and insecurities. It is steamy, intense, emotional, and heartwarming. They never expected to get to place where they felt happiness and solid ground at their feet and it was a tumultuous journey getting there.

4.5+ stars--Part two: On Higher Ground:
Beck and Dax have gone through so much to find their happy ending, but even so there are parts of their pasts that have marked them so much that they will never truly go away. I was happy with how the first book resolved and honestly I did not realize just how much story they had left to tell...but they did. And this second book reeled me in just as quickly. I felt everything they did. I shared their joys, sadness, and fears. Their struggles, how they support and champion each other, and the lives they build together make for a passionate, heartfelt story of love, hope, and healing. It is about sticking together during the good and bad times. It truly gives us the story of what happens after the initial commitment.--the next steps in building a life, home, and family together. It is not always easy. Life is stressful and there are often situations to manage and overcome. But in this duet these guys have shown such growth and understanding of themselves and each other. I became very attached to them and those that were important in their lives.

I loved seeing how far these two have come to find their place in the world and their higher ground.

I am intrigued by the new character that was introduced named Micah. He is another lost soul, and I am looking forward to his story in the third book.

Dax and Beck's blistering HOT and emotional romance continues in ON HIGHER GROUND by Melissa Collins. If you haven't started their journey yet, STOP what you're doing and purchase ON SOLID GROUND.

If you fell in love with these two men in the first book, then be prepared to take another heavy and emotional rollercoaster ride in ON HIGHER GROUND. This is a story about love, belonging, and acceptance. This about a love so deep and so everlasting, that even though there may be some demons that have not been laid to rest, you will have the other half of your soul to keep them at bay. Dax and Beck's happily ever after, may not be as happy as one might think. The past is chasing them, and they need to learn to trust each other, no matter what comes their way. After all, they have more than each other this go-round to think of.

The nightmares return and Dax continues to struggle with his PTSD. He's in constant worry that he will be unable to keep his family safe. His vulnerability grows and he shelters himself in his work. Beck will do anything to save his family and bring Dax back to the present. Opening up communication is the first step, the second step is to constantly remind Dax that Beck will ALWAYS be on his side.

The struggles, the ups and downs, all of the obstacles that come with being together and starting a family come crashing down all around them. They can only depend on each other to pull them out of the wreckage and come out on top and finally have the happily ever after that they deserve.

This is my second book from Ms. Collins and she astounds me one again with her beautiful writing and her lovable and complex characters. Some might say this book wasn't needed, but I for one, am so GLAD that the author shared more of Dax and Beck's story with us. It might have been a tumultuous ride, but in the end, all of the heartache and struggle was worth it. Love really does conquer all.

On Higher Ground picks up where On Solid Ground ends. I do not recommend that you read this one without the first one.

I think that this author is really getting into her groove with this one in writing this genre. This is by far her steamiest M/M to date. I loved their chemistry.
I think the reason that I can't rate this one higher is because it felt like their story line was somewhat dragged out. There was some unnecessary angst and drama that I just could have done without. It kind of had a feeling of an extended epilogue that could have been a bit shorter.

I do recommend this series if you are a M/M lover that likes their guys sweet and steamy.

I really loved going back to time with Dax & Beck - their chemistry and love for each other is just beautiful. There's a real sense of trust and loyalty with these two and their protectiveness of each other and Violet is warming to the heart. While they both go through self doubt and times of challenge, they always come back to each other...
It's a lovely series and while it gets some mixed reviews, it connects with me ❤️

I loved The continuation of Dax and Beck's story! No matter what they went through they never gave up on each other and their love. The extra bonus of this story was Violet and getting to seem them both as dads. I can't wait for Micah's story!

4,5 stelline

Devo pubblicamente delle scuse all'autrice.

Let me preface this review by advising, this is the continuation of Dax and Beck's story, my opinion and suggestion would be to read that book first. There is so much that happens and a lot of things are set in motion in that book that you will better understand if you've read it first.

Dax and Beck have settled into a comfortable life with Beck's niece whom they adopted after her mother was killed. The PTSD is far from gone, but Dax does have a better handle on with Beck's love, patience and assistance along with his service dog Tonka. When the nightmares begin to resurface with a new twist, Dax keeps it from Beck for a while. Beck knows something is up, but he doesn't push. Dax is trying to take care of things on his own. Partially because it's still surreal for him to have someone to love, someone to call home, someone to lean on. Partially because he doesn't want to add anything else to Beck's plate. With so many things going on at the same time, it takes a toll on Dax and his stability. If these two are truly going to make it work, they will have to remember why they fell in love, how hard it was for them to find their way to each other.

I do love when an Author goes back and ties up lose ends for couples that had more story to tell. That's exactly what Collins has done with Higher Ground. Beck's past, his issues with his father, what happened to his sister is a lot for one person. But then there are Dax's issues to contend with as well. PTSD is a crippling monkey on your back. The way these two have grown both as individuals, as a couple, and now with the addition of Violet as a family is outstanding. Planning a wedding, discussing adopting another child, trying to decide if you want to meet with your father that walked out on you and your sister when you were little... it's a lot for anyone.

While there were some heavy subjects/issues dealt with, this book was the crescendo of Dax and Beck's story. What resonated with me about this story was the reality of the issues these two had to face. Jealousy, PTSD, uncertainty, anger, are they good enough to be parents for Violet, and still, should they even consider adopting another child. Individually, maybe not. But together, definitely. Of course you must read this if you read On Solid Ground, who wouldn't want to know where the story goes? Those that enjoy their books with a balance of reality, angst and romance will likely enjoy this book as well.

**I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads.**

On Higher Ground is a continuation of Dax and Beck's story. I highly recommend reading On Solid Ground. There are a bunch of references to things that happen in that book that aren't completely explained. It's not impossible to read it as a stand alone but a much better experience to read it as the series was written.

Dax and Beck are continuing on with their lives as a family. They are facing ups and downs like any normal couple but with little or no communication and Dax's nightmares popping back up things seem to escalate pretty quickly. Assumptions are made, things are questioned.

I enjoyed seeing how the story played out. Ms. Collins can write a steamy sex scene (or a dozen) so very well. The fire that burns between Dax and Beck is always burning hot. I love seeing Tonka's part in Dax's recovery. PTSD is no joke and Ms. Collins talks about it beautifully. The ending was as emotional as it was sweet. Love this couple.

4 Stars!

I really, really, really like this author. While I am not a huge reader of M/M romance novels, this author made me a reader when I stumbled across On Solid Ground. And since then, I have been a follower and fan of this author. And when we thought we saw her best, she comes back and shows up why she is one of the queens of this genre.

Well Melissa Collins is at it again. In book one we met Dax and Beck. We watched them struggle and go through the motions only to fall in love and find their happy ending at the end of their story. And just when we thought it was over, this author wows us with a follow up. In On Higher Ground, we follow these two again and see their journey.

Emotional. Intensity. Passion. Love. Dax and Beck really have it all. But their relationship once again will hit bumps. Life is hard, family is complicated, and sometimes our demons threaten to take over even after they were conquered. What Dax and Beck have is real and their family is worth fighting for. Get ready for their highly anticipated follow up.

I recommend this book and series.

OMG THIS BOOK! SO MANY FEELS!

I absolutely loved the first book in this series, On Solid Ground, and I was super excited to see that this was going to be a direct continuation rather than a new set of characters. I really loved all of the obstacles that Dax and Beck have to go through, and how they communicate and work to overcome them together. Violet is adorable (she's one of the few kids in stories that I really do like! Adorable, cute, but not overly and unbelievably so), and I just loved getting more with this family.

And again, this is also one of the few books written in present tense that hasn't made me want to go crazy! :P

I have personally not known anyone to be suffering with PTSD, but I feel like it was handled so well and realistically in this. And I absolutely can't wait for Micah's story. I hope we'll get to see a bit more with Dax and Beck in Micah's book.

This is HIGHLY recommended but you absolutely must read the first book in this series first. Get them both, and enjoy the romance and the journey for Dax, Beck, and Violet!

“... sometimes the things that made us weak, that nearly broke us in half, ended up being the things that solidified us.”
On Higher Ground is pure perfection. This isn't just a long epilogue but rather a truly emotional romantic tale about try and built a great life together. I love how complex are the characters, I like their passion and I'm glad that the whole story is so real and believable. I enjoyed it very much.

I wanted to read this sequel since I've read On Solid Ground and I wasn't disappointed.
I really liked Dax and Beck love story that I did need this beautiful long epilogue.

Our two sweet guys still have to overcome some issues in order to reach their happiness and enjoy the rest of their life together as a family.

Protect. Heal. Love. Belong.

These are the guiding principles that have allowed Beck and Dax, despite everything that has happened to them, to create a life together…to heal some of the fractures that their respective pasts created…to chase some of the demons away and feel a sense of coming home with every embrace, every kind word.

But, even though Beck and Dax are now on solid ground, there’s still work to be done; there’s still hurts to be healed and fears to be handled. A sense of belonging and a sense of family is what brought Beck and Dax together, and those same ideas will sustain them as long as they communicate and push back at each other when one of them shuts down or the memories become too much to bear alone.

Melissa Collins has taken her readers on quite the journey with Beck, Dax, and Violet. There were times in the first book where I couldn’t fathom how they could wade through all of the misery and darkness that plagued them in order to make it out okay and together. But Collins created strong and courageous alpha males who refused to give up the fight even when the struggle seemed far too great, and those characteristics continue to be at the forefront in their follow up story as they “figure out their pasts” in order to “chase their futures.”

I loved that Collins continued Beck and Dax’s story, and in On Higher Ground, readers witness how solid the bond is between these two men, and even though there are hurdles to work through, there was never a doubt in my mind that they would fight tooth and nail, against each other’s self-loathing and doubts in order to have the future they want – one where they’re a family with their sugar pop, their friends, and even a few people they never saw coming.

You and I, we're not tied to the ground

Not falling but rising like rolling around

Eyes closed above the rooftops

Eyes closed, we're gonna spin through the stars

Our arms wide as the sky

We gonna ride the blue all the way to the end of the world

To the end of the world

Dax and Beck, both personally and as a couple, have been through hell and back, and while they still bear the scars and the burdens of the past, they found a way to stand strong and walk through the chaos and the devastation together, creating a united front that allows them to have a solid foundation and the determination to soar even higher.

Melissa Collins continues to consume with her fantastic storytelling and complex characters. Beck and Dax aren’t perfect; in fact, their flaws are a point of contention on numerous occasions throughout their story, but Collins beautifully illustrates, through every touch, every gentle/strong word, every sexual embrace, how and why they belong to one another and why that regardless of how many times things fall apart, they will always “pick up the pieces and rebuild it stronger than before.”

4.5 On Higher Ground Love Stars.....

"Love is love, and family is family. "

On Higher Ground is the continuing story of Dax and Beck, and of course how could I forget sweet little Violet. If you read On Solid Ground you know the story of Dax, Beck, and Violet, the three of them together are perfect for one another. From their devotion to each other, the bond they all share, and the love is absolute perfection. I would recommend reading On Solid Ground before this one, it would help you understand this story much better. I loved the first one and this one also, what's better than another dose of Dax, Beck, and Violet. This story has all the feels, you'll laugh, cry, and your panties may melt from some hot sex scenes. Secondary characters were an added bonus to the story. Violet will melt your heart out she sure did for me, she's got a sassy mouth and a big personality. Lets not forget Tonka, Dax's service dog who's with him through all his up's and down's.

Dax and Beck's story continues a year after On Solid Ground ended. Dax is still having nightmares from his time spent in the war and they still have not set a date for their wedding. Dax is closed off and hasn't been himself lately, he's not talking with Beck and its driving him further down the hole. Dax is afraid if Beck finds out about his nightmares how bad they have become, Beck may not want anything to do with him. He feels like he's a burden in Beck's life. He's a lost soul wondering will he ever recover from what he lost and all he saw. Dax has to realizes that he and Beck are in this together and whatever obstacles they face as a couple, the two as a team will overcome them.

Beck also faces some struggles in his life his past comes back to haunt him, he has to fix this and move on from it because not only it is affecting him but Dax and Violet to. Just like Dax, Beck has to understand that he and Dax are a team and they need to face their problems together.
The two share a love like no other, each wanting to protect one another and Violet. They both desperately need to move on from the past and the demons that haunt them, accept them and move on to the future there entitled to have. Will the two get married? Can they prove to one another that the love and bond they have is enough and move on with Violet and their life?

This is the journey of Dax, Beck, and Violet, each one individually has some healing to overcome, to accept past mistakes and move forward from them before they eat away at you. Accepting family into your lives, whether it's from your past, to present or future.

"Because your my home. My forever. I've never been more solidified in my life than right here, right now with you and sugar pop. "

Jen's Review

This book takes place like a year and half after where the last book ended. This story brings us more insight into the trials and tribulations of these men. We see a greater depth to Dax and Beck’s characters, as these men come to terms with their pasts while they move onto their futures together. I honestly didn’t know what to expect with this story. I thought for sure Melissa would have given us a follow up that would have been all hearts and flowers right from the get go but it wasn’t that easy. I really appreciated seeing that these guys still had struggles. Their relationship wasn’t perfect so of course there would be bumps in the road. The fact that there were some real problems made these characters feel a lot more personal. Their journey to their HEA just felt that much more real.

“sometimes, just sometimes, life is horrible and mean, unforgiving and cruel. And you can’t help but wonder if the tragedies which we suffer are only meant to make us stronger, to prepare us for the next leg of our journey.”

These men are still reeling with the after effects of Nikki’s death and Dax’s PTSD. Their lives are moving forward however there are plenty of things that these men have to face that have the potential of tearing them apart. I really loved that Melissa kept with the integrity of these characters. They were the same guys they were when we first met them. Just because these guys fell in love it didn’t make their lives all of a sudden problem free. Their pasts really had an effect on them and seeing them work through that together was just really amazing. There is no doubt that these guys were meant to be or that their love is all consuming. I really loved the relationship these guys had with Violet. There are so many moments they shared with this little girl that were so touching.

Over all I truly enjoyed this story. It was great being able to catch up with these guys and see how their lives were moving forward. I really loved that the passion and tenderness between Dax and Beck were still present in this story. Melissa really gave us a great sense of what a family really looks likes. I really loved the growth we got from these characters as a couple. There wasn’t a whole lot of angst even though it’s not always smooth sailing. This book was definitely a great follow up to the first book and I can’t wait to see what else Melissa brings us next.

My Review ~

On Higher Ground is the sequel to On Solid Ground, which introduced and developed the relationship between Dax and Beck. This is not a standalone and should only be read as the companion book to On Solid Ground.

I absolutely loved the first book, so I was extremely excited to hear that the author was revisiting one of my favorite couples and advancing their story. I will admit that I was a little leary of revisiting them as well because they are a favorite couple. I did enjoy the story because I loved seeing more of Dax and Beck, seeing them settle into their lives and deal with being parents.

The struggle for Dax with his PTSD was very well done. It just felt like something was missing from the first book to Dax's issues with his PTSD in this book. I'm not sure that I expected Dax's reaction to his PTSD flaring up either. It seemed a bit out of character but since PTSD strikes at will it's very possible this was a true reaction. And the author introduced a new character, Micah, who I'm guessing will be in a future book. At least I hope he is after what happens prior to his disappearing act in On Higher Ground. The additional drama that was created with his character though, fell a little flat for me. I'd have preferred to see more of a positive spin on the new character's part in the story since he also suffers from PTSD but, again hopefully this isn't his only appearance.

Overall On Higher Ground was a good wrap up to what was started in On Solid Ground. I just felt the minor issues were more of a blip then a bump or a stopping point. I loved seeing little Violet's life evening out with Dax and Beckett. Also seeing more of their friends and their own lives moving forward made this a very enjoyable read. As usual the author gets her characters and that shapes the story around them and it's very easy to get lost in a story written like that.

I highly recommend this for fans of the first book, and recommend both books to readers who've never read either the series or this author previously.

On Higher Ground is the continuation of Beck and Dax's love story, so if you haven't read On Solid Ground STOP RIGHT HERE and pick it up now.

I always read the acknowledgments that the author's place at the end of the book. Melissa stated in her acknowledgements that "love is love and their story showcases that perfectly". I honestly could not agree more. What Dax and Beck have is non-traditional to some...but love should never EVER be discriminated against it. Love comes in all different sizes and shapes and can be a bit blurry at times. It's the beauty of their love for each other that feeds the romance book lover in me! Okay, I just needed to get that off my chest.

"You're mine, and I'm yours. That's all that matters. All that has and all that ever will."

On Higher Ground picks up shortly after the last book. Dax and Beck have not tied the knot yet but as they have some obstacles to overcome. PTSD, some insecurity on both parts, family, and every day life lend to some of their problems in moving forward. But what Dex and Beck have definitely makes all these problems worth the love that they share.

I think one of my favorite things about this book is the love these two sexy men share for Victoria. I swear the interactions between them and their daughter just breaks my heart. Melissa did such a fantastic job writing that part of the story. Also, the chemistry between these two is still very much at the forefront of the story....and let's just say it's super steamy!

"The moment I saw you for who you were, flaws and all, I belonged to you. It may have been in ways I hadn't realized, but I did."

I am not always a huge believer that a story needs to be continued into another book. But sometimes as a reader we just need to see what happens after the HEA. This book is a prime example as to one that was a great addition to an already fabulous standalone.

Melissa Collins writes some of the best M/M out there. It's not bogged down with unnecessary sex scenes, it's laced with a beautiful story and incredible writing. If you are new to M/M, this is a great series to start with!

Love is Dax and Beck! <3
