Ամենաբարի ու անմեղ գիրքը։ Ուզում ես տասը տարեկան լինես, Նյու Յորքում ապրես, որ կենտրոնական այգում վազվզես մի բուռ շագանակով, ու միակ մտահոգությունը լինի այն, թե ինչ եղավ տանը մենակ մնացած ձուկիկը։

Apr 26, 630pm ~~ I recently collected all my Saroyan titles to do an author project this year but I had forgotten about this one, another library sale treasure. I found it when looking through one bookcase for something else. I knew I had read it but I couldn't remember anything about it, so this reading was fresh and new for me.
I won't forget it again any time soon.
Our narrator is a nine year old girl whose parents are divorced. She lives with actress Mom in California, but her brother lives with artist Dad in France.
In the first chapter Mom decides to go to New York City and have one more try at the big time on Broadway. Our girl goes along, naturally, and it is a good thing she does, because she seems to be the adult in the family most of the time. I felt a little sorry for her for most of the book, She wants Mom to be happy, but what she really wants is to go see Dad in France.
But Mom had her dream so our girl does her best to help. Turned out she was offered a part in a very special play, one that needed a girl just like her for the role. The choice was entirely up to her, but she knew that Mom would be happy if she would accept the job because then Mom would get to be in the play also.
We spend most of the book preparing for the play and having adventures along the way. A Major League baseball game, a trip to Coney Island, and most of all solitary walks for our girl in Central Park. It took me more than a few of those walks to get used to that idea.....these days who would dare send their child on a daily walk in the park?
Anyway, we see the prep for the play, but in a general way. The plot of the play itself is never revealed until the final chapter, and then it reaches up, grabs the reader's heart and brings tears to the eyes. At least that's what happened to me. How could I have read this before and not remembered anything?!
I loved it and I will certainly not let so many years pass again before my next reading.
I read Jim Tully's biography just before reading this book, and from there I saw that Tully and William Saroyan were friends. I will always wonder if that is why the character of the playwright in this book was named Emerson Tully or if it was just a coincidence?
Okay, I am all caught up with my pending reviews now so I will get back to reading!
Oh, and I did go ahead an add that extra star!

Почитала, бо хотілося чогось вірменського і пам'ятник Сарояну в Єревані нагадав про цього, чи не єдиного письменника-вірмена, якого я знаю. Книжка звісно не про Вірменію, а про дитинство, театр і Нью-Йорк, про розсудливу дівчинку і нерозсудливу маму і їхній шлях до театру. Чудове і з психологічної точки зору, і як вровадження у світ постановки вистави і просто приємно читати.

So if I could associate so well with 'Papa you're crazy', 'Mama I love you' was just another story. Nice and warm, but nothing extremely special.

I love this autobiographical novel that reflects the turmoil in Saroyan's life from his daughter's point of view. It is sweet, sad, and hopeful. Highly reccomend.

I am pretty much over Saroyan. I have read all of his novels in publishing date order since My Name is Aram. I learned in the biography I read about him that he had big alimony payments, so had to keep writing books for the income. The dedication of this one is to his daughter Lucy and the story is autobiographical. A young girl named Twink and her divorced mother go to New York in search of a part in a play for the mother. In fact, they each land a part in the same play, with ten-year-old Twink playing a young girl.
The story covers all the steps of producing and opening a play which I found interesting. Although Saroyan's writing is as mundane as ever, I stayed interested and the pages went quickly. 1955 and 1956 must have been the top years about kids living in posh New York hotels and apartments: Eloise at the Plaza, Patrick Dennis with his Auntie Mame at Beekman Place and now Twink at the Pierre. I was turning nine in 1956 and I did grow up thinking that the ultimate lifestyle would be to live in New York in a posh hotel.
Twink had that lifestyle at the age of ten and after many months decided to move on. If I had read Mama I Love You instead of Eloise, I could have gotten over my hotel obsession sooner. Ah well, now we have Priceline, so it is all good.

İçindeki tüm karakterlerin iyi huylu, anlayışlı ve uysal olduğu, tüm olayların bir şekilde tatlıya bağlandığı ve tüm engellerin - hani neredeyse- evrenin yardımıyla ortadan kalktığı, peri masalından hallice, çocuk filmi şeker şerbetliğinde bir kitap. Türkçe'ye sevgili Tarık Dursun K. çevirmiş, bu da sürprizi. Bu romanı Saroyan yazdığı için üçten üçbuçuk yıldız, çünkü biz gelirken Saroyan gidiyordu. Ancak bir türlü aradığımı bulamadığım için (belki de yaşlandım böyle sevgi dolu kitaplar okumak için) üçbuçuktan üç yıldız.

Lovely book! It's all about a daughter hanging out with her mama in New York, and getting jobs as actresses. They go to the park, walk down the street, eat pancakes for breakfast - simple things, but written with zest and beauty. Saroyan wrote this about his own family, and he truly gets into the head of his daughter Lucy. It's amazing to see.

Kitap Fuarı'nın sahaf bölümünden epey yıpranmış olarak aldığım bu kitap beni biraz hayal kırıklığına uğrattı. Yazar Saroyan olunca daha edebi bir okuma bekliyordum ama sanki bir çocuk kitabı okudum.

Չգիտեմ,ինչ֊որ թաքնված հասունություն կա գրքի մեջ,որ հենց էդպես թաքուն ոնց֊որ կարդացողին փոխանցվի)
Մենակ չհասկացա ինչի էին բանկ թալանելը անգլերենից բառացի թարգմանել ու գրել "բանկ կտրել"😀

this books seemed, strangely, as one of the Bukowski's book (in Czech at least), the writing style and words used. even the characters, but the plot was neither Bukowski-ish nor Saroyan-ish. I liked 'Papa, you're crazy' more, but still, they're completely different, in my opinion.

-Է՜, Գորտուկ,- ասաց Գլեդիսը։- Այ, դա է ամբողջ հարցը։ Ես չգիտեմ։ Ոչ ոք էլ չգիտի, եթե ճիշտը խոստովանենք։ Երևի բոլոր պիեսներն ու վեպերը, բոլոր օպերաներն ու սիմֆոնիաները, բոլոր նկարներն ու մնացածը դրա մասին են։ Ու բոլորն էլ ստեղծվում են, որովհետև ամեն ոք ուզում է կյանքին մասնակից լինել, բայց չգիտի կյանքը որն է։

Շաաատ հետաքրքիր գիրք էր : Պատմությունն այն մասին է թե ինչպես են մայր և աղջիկ խաղում պիեսում ,ինչպես է բաժանված կնոջ վիճակը , ինչպես է մայր և աղջիկ հարաբերությունները և այլն : Սարոյանը շաաատ հետաքրքիր և ճարտար լեզու ունի : Գիրքը գնահատում եմ 5/5 :

Հետաքրքիր էր աշխարհը փոքրիկ աղջնակի աչքերով տեսնելը. բարի ու անկեղծ։
Փոքր֊ինչ նման էր Բեքմենի "My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She's Sorry" գրքին, որտեղ գլխավոր հերոսուհին ևս փոքրիկ աղջիկ էր։🙂
