Master of Netherfield: A Variation on Pride and Prejudice

Rate this book
When Fitzwilliam Darcy graduates from University, his father decides to establish his son in a household at a great distance from Pemberley to provide a home for his younger sister away from the family seat. Wishing to keep his mistress close as he recovers from a recent illness, George Darcy gifts his heir with an estate named Netherfield in Hertfordshire. The challenge of building up the distant estate will keep his son away and provide a safe home to his daughter.
‘Master William’ takes on the responsibilities for Netherfield and his young sister with the help of his nearest neighbours, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Bennet while the five Bennet daughters adopt Georgiana as another sister. Several years later, when George Darcy becomes ill and dies, William becomes ‘Mr. Darcy’. As the new master takes control of the great estate of Pemberley with his sister at his side, Georgiana asks that they return to their ‘home’ and ‘family’ in Hertfordshire. When Darcy realizes he misses their home in Hertfordshire and one Bennet sister in particular, they return.

Angst: a feeling of dread, anxiety, or anguish

I admit it: I am a bit of a JAFF “angst-wienie” in certain situations, especially if Darcy has a rival for Elizabeth’s affections and most especially if his rival is his cousin, the Colonel. It is almost enough to make me revert to biting my nails.

I also find that I am a bit bored if a story doesn’t contain any angst at all. I know. I am much too hard to please.

This is a good story with an unusual beginning plot, but for my taste, a little bit bland. Our couple meets when they are still young (Elizabeth is still a child) and in many ways, they grow up together. The Bennets are much more sensible and Mrs. Bennet does not fear the hedgerows. The daughters are disciplined appropriately and behave themselves.

George Darcy still lives at the beginning of the book and has mistresses, past and present.

Quote from the book: “My father’s natural children will be an issue all the days of my life, I fear.”

And yet … provision for the mistresses is included in the elder Darcy’s will and the natural brothers are not an issue.

So, all in all, situations arise, are dealt with, and evaporate. No long-term issues. In spite of this, the book kept my attention to the end. Read it when you need a break from all the angst.

Very sweet, low angsty read. Primarily from Darcy's POV.

Almost a black a white retelling, in that most of the Ton are greedy, self serving, morally and financially bankrupt idiots. The Bennet's are practically saints in comparison, with white light constantly shining forth.

Darcy is lucky that he got to meet them fairly early on, right after finishing university. He might like to think Darcy Sr. got it for him to prepare him, but the idjit (who only learned his lesson on near death bed) really did it to get his children out of the way so he could move in the latest light-skirt for hire. who though for sure she'd end up with the whole pile of Pemberley.

A cute read tho!

Enjoyable Read
This author writes a good story, somewhat atypical of the many, many P&P variations I’ve read. Of the two books I’ve read by Martin Hunnicutt, he makes Mr. and Mrs. Bennet much more responsible in the care and affection for all their children. Lydia is younger, and therefore not such an embarrassment, and all the girls more accomplished. Wickham is never much of an issue.

In this variation, Elizabeth and Darcy meet when they are much younger when he is sent to manage Netherfield by his father, which becomes home instead of Netherfield. He and Georgiana become like family to the Bennets. Zero angst and not much romance.

Still too many proofreading errors for my taste, however. That’s disappointing.

The Darcy’s own Netherfield

The author has a style. Not a lot of heartbreaking or heartfelt romance but and interesting and full of events story.

This one is as fun as the other two I’ve read. Original plot...always. The tone is different in this story. There is more of how hard it was to live in Regency England. The path to safety for a family is very thin and there are many roads to awful that appear in everyone’s life.

Thumbs up.

A very sweet low angst story rich in friendship and family but a bit poor in romance. But as I finished this book , I could just think of one question to ask of the author. Caroline Bingley and William Collins, really? Who is he actually trying to punish? I really wish there was an epilogue of them having dinner with Lady Catherine.

Looking forward to more from this author!

This was a well-paced story of ODC and their families earlier connection from canon. This is not a story for those requiring angst at every turn of the page. Quite frankly, very little obstacle existed to their HEA (if I was honest, no obstacle existed except maybe for the time it took for Lizzy to come of age!). I love the simplicity of this story and the storytelling skill of this author. Yes, there were spelling/grammar errors, here and there, but it was not enough to detract from this pleasant story.

Lost me in the end

I’m a bit disappointed having just finished this story. I was so engrossed in the beginning and I just felt empty at the end.
This is not your typical P&P so be prepared. Mr. George Darcy has several mistresses and natural children. Let’s just say Fitzwilliam and Georgiana did not have a happy childhood. Then we see them grow in Meryton as the community embraces them. Not much romance between Fitzwilliam and Elizabeth, all of a sudden she’s of age do he’s out of mourning and they get married. The end.
So I’ve read this authors other books and have been intrigued so much so that I really wanted to see this story be great. I’m not sure if authors think they get to a certain word count then decide to end it. There could be so much more and so much more romance between ODC that is missing. Unless there is a sequel and I’m totally off my rocker for writing this review.

Not sure where to start

This could have been a good book. The premise and ideas are interesting. The story begins just after Darcy finishes university, and when Elizabeth is only fourteen years old. Darcy's father decides to get his son out of the house, and buys Netherfield Park for his son to manage and live in, and Georgiana, just ten years old, comes to live there as well. The older Mr Darcy, not exactly a stellar character, wants to be able to have his mistress at Pemberly, and cannot if the kids are at home.

In this version the Bennetts are a much more stable family, and Mr Bennett especially is a much better father and estate manager. He takes Darcy under his wing and shows him how the neighbors cooperate and help each other. Darcy's first meeting with Elizabeth is cute, and they establish a friendship. When Georgiana comes, she is absorbed into the Bennett family, almost as another sister. The Bennett-Darcy bond becomes strong and close.

I can't say that this is a romantic tale. Darcy and Elizabeth like each other, but there's really no courtship or flirting, no smoldering glances or stolen kisses. Suddenly at the end, Darcy proposes and that's it. Pretty dry, really. Most of the story is taken up with Darcy's struggles to distance himself from his own grasping and embarrassing relations, his sadness and disappointment with his own father and the illegitimate children he's left behind, his preoccupation with all the business responsibilities left on his shoulders after his father's death, and protecting Georgiana from bothersome people. This isn't a joyful story, but rather it has a very serious tone.

Most of all, this book fails because of the terrible editing. I started to wonder how this author came to be a writer with the many, many incorrect words used, the many words missing, many words that shouldn't be there, the lack of punctuation, or punctuation in the wrong place, etc. I wondered if perhaps English is not the primary language, and someone did a poor translation? The number of editing errors became laughable and embarrassing. How did this book get to the printers?

The ending is rushed and not at all heartwarming. It's more factual than emotional, and left me flat. It's disappointing because, in the right hands this story idea could have been so much better. I can't recommend it.

Great history of Bennet & Darcy in Meryton

Young Darcy is given Netherfield by his father to learn estate management and raise its income. His father wants to stay at Pemberly with his mistress and their natural child. He even sends 10 yr old Georgiana to stay with young Darcy. The Darcy family fits in well with the 4&20 families and are befriended by the Bennet family. Mrs Bennet isn't as shrill and is able to finally have a son to break the entail.
I enjoyed reading this, and it's changed enough to be interesting. The Fitzwilliam family members are gamblers who lose money quickly, even Lady Catherine can't manage her money and wants Darcy to bail her out by marrying Anne.
Fortunately we have minimal Wickham, no Mr Collins, a short but tedious Miss Bingley, and far too much of the Witch of Kent who blows in like a hurricane and creates drama.

A nice story. Two nice families…and some not so nice relatives.

This kind of story I like to call “brain candy.” It’s very sweet, low angst and just super easy reading (although it would benefit from better editing).

This story occurs several years prior to canon. Elizabeth is 14 and living with her very genteel and attentive family. All the girls are being educated and none are yet out…even Jane at 16. This is a much different Mr and Mrs Bennet. He has taken time and attention with both his wife and daughters and, eventually, his newborn son.

Old Mr Darcy is still living (a fairly debauched lifestyle). He has kept mistresses and has several “natural “ children. He didn’t have a good relationship with his wife, Lady Anne, who presented him with a daughter (Georgiana) not conceived by her husband. All of the Fitzwilliams are pretty degenerate with the exception of Colonel Fitzwilliam. They provide the small amount of angst in this story.

Darcy’s father wants his son to be untainted by his own reputation and once Darcy has graduated from university his father buys him an estate in Hertfordshire, Netherfield Park. Darcy brings his very young sister with him knowing she would get no attention from his father. Darcy and Georgiana go to Netherfield and begin building a life.

Darcy is befriended by the very friendly Bennets and they form very strong bonds over the years. There is very little romance in this story except for Elizabeth pining for her best friend’s affection as she grows into a young woman. It takes Darcy many years to realize he cares for Elizabeth romantically but they eventually get their HEA.

This is a strong Darcy who is not super impressed with his position, money or aristocratic family. Just a nice guy raising a nice little sister.

I loved it!

It was so enticing that I couldn’t put it down, this book grabbed my interest from the very first page. I couldn’t put it down, I had to know what happened next. The story is well written with a very good storyline. You will see the most beloved characters in a whole new way. This is a Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice variation.

‘Master William’ takes on the responsibilities for Netherfield and his young sister with the help of his nearest neighbours, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Bennet, while the five Bennet daughters adopt Georgiana as another sister.

So with all that and more this story pulls you in and holds you tight. It’s a must read. I highly recommend to everyone.

This book starts off 6 years before the traditional Pride and Prejudice is set. After Darcy graduates from University, his father wants Darcy prepared to run Pemberley when it is his time, so Darcy is given Netherfield Park to prove his ability to manage a park. Thomas Bennet becomes a friend and advisor to Darcy and the Bennet girls grow up with Georgiana. The two families become friends.

I enjoyed this book because you see a possibility of Darcy before he becomes the proud and arrogant man. You know he loves his friends and will always care for them. So you get to see them grow. Obviously this changes the events of Pride and Prejudice, but it is believable.

The character's are all part of the book (Mr. Collins, Lady Catherine de Bourgh, Wickham, Bingley, Caroline Bingley), so you get to see them all interact together.

i just loved this alternative view of my favorite couple. Mr. Darcy was a disappointment in that he had his mistress living in Pemberley . William meeting a young Elizabeth 14 yrs old and having Mrs. Bennet be a reasonable and good example for her daughters. Georgianna being friends will all the Bennet sisters. It was all so enjoyable. I wanted it to continue for lot longer than the story did. The characters were there and some were still unpleasant and others were seen and bothersome. Caroline was just Caroline and it was amusing. I will definitely read more of this author's work. As a Kindle Unlimited option this was just what I wanted.

Avid Reader

I enjoyed the lack of angst in this story and simply reading how the Bennet and Darcy families developed a friendship that eventually led to marriage for Darcy and Elizabeth. It was interesting the way that Herefordshire became home instead of Pemberly. Both Darcy parents had affairs because they were unhappily married. Mr. Darcy 's will made it impossible for Darcy to marry any of his cousins because if he did, he would lose Pemberly and all his wealth. If Georgina married anyone that Darcy or Richard disapproved of, she would not receive her dowry until she was 30!

Wait, it's over?

Master of Nethefield held my interest from the very beginning.

-There were no true villains, just badly behaved relatives and acquaintances.
-Darcy and Elizabeth romance was non-existent, but they got on well.
-The Bennet family are respectable.
-No Collins. Very little Wickham and Caroline.
-Mr. Bennet is a respected landowner involved in running his estate, managed to increase the profits, and aid this fellow landowners when trouble arises, but he still hasn't put any money away for his girls...oh well.
-Loved senior Darcy's will concerning the Fitzwilliam family.
-I was caught off guard by the abrupt ending.

Friendship

What would happen if Mr. Darcy Sr. decided that his son should stay away from his home to learn to be a master of his own estate? Was his decision made for the benefit of his son or for his own selfish reasons? You will find the answers to these and other questions in this story. With Darcy taking up ownership of Netherfield many years before Canon, we are able to see the friendships that develop and the mutual benefit for all involved. I did like a few of the things that Mr. Darcy Sr. placed in his Will; one could have hoped that he had done some of that in Canon. Overall this is a nice story about friendship. Will I read again? Sure.

Not bad, but not great

Lots of grammatical errors. Would been for some careful editing. Many omitted words, misplaced words, and unneeded words, plus simple punctuation errors are abundant throughout the writing. The ending is rather brief and leaves something to be desired. Once the situation with Darcy’s relatives end, you hear nothing more of them leaving the reader to wonder what happened with them afterwards. The same is true of Wickham. I felt as if these characters were kicked out of the story and forgotten.

Meh... Just fair...

The concept of the book is not bad, but the writing is weak. Words are misused, events are repeated through lackluster dialogue to no purpose, and there is no fire or sparkle to the plot. All of the Bennets are fine upstanding people, Darcy is unfailingly kind and friendly, Elizabeth doesn't get much opportunity to shine, and even the nasty characters are summarily put in their places without them hardly ruffling any feathers. All in all, it makes for a rather boring read.

Interesting Entertaining and thoughfulness

My 1st book from this author and I found it very interesting, entertaining,And very thoughtful.I love how Darcy and Miss Darcy became Integrated with the Bennets to form a big family. Unfortunately, the reason why happened a lot back then, very realistic. Truly enjoyed reading how different the Bennets were in this book. Loved how Darcy handled the Fitzwilliam Family. Would of liked more on Colonel, but that's only complaint. Job well done and highly recommended to all to read.

I enjoyed this cozy Pride and Prejudice variation.

I like this version of the Bennets, who are actively engaged in the upbringing of their daughters, and the running of Longbourn. The family welcomes Darcy and Georgiana as part of their extended family, and all 6 girls benefit from the association. There are villains, but with little power. A nice, low angst Pride and Prejudice variation.

Would've been a higher review with better editing

Hated all the work involved with corrections to the text. Liked the familial relationship between the two Darcys and the Bennetts. Liked the benefits it brought both families. Probably would have preferred a bit more romance between Darcy and Elizabeth. But it was a good long story.

Enjoyed this book!

A different retelling of Pride and Prejudice that was hard to put down. Young Mr Darcy is gifted Netherfield Park by his father and learns to be master of an estate there. He meets 14-year old Lizzy and builds a friendship that turns into love as she grows to her maturity. I so enjoyed this book!

Darcy’s father a rake

I do love variations that include either extended Darcy family or the Darcy parents are still alive. Darcy and Georgiana were much stronger personalities than I’ve read in a long time. I even liked Bingley in this variation, he had a backbone from tge start.

great low angst story - beautifully written

This story has one of my favorite tropes where E&D meet early. It has a unique twist and I love Mr. and Mrs. B in the story. Just an overall feel good story and one I could not put down once I started. Very well written and easy read. Definitely recommend!

Enjoyable!

I enjoyed this version of P&P. It is a different take on it leaving Pemberly behind. Pemberly is a character in itself in Jane Austen’s novel, so this was diverting. However, the author or the editing could improve on their grammar or typos.

Very Good Story

This is a very good and enjoyable. The plot is unique and creative. The characters are far blend of Canon and new wrinkles. Held my attention and was a fun and quick read. Grammar became more of an issue as the book progressed. Hence, the deducted star.

A happy twist

This book did not contain the friction and misunderstanding of Austin's classic work. But it is a hapy read. There are minor grammatical errors, easily overlooked but noticeable.

If you want a light and easy read, this is the book for you.
