Dead Remaining #3

Campus Bones

Rate this book
Amazon Charts bestselling author Vivian Barz reunites Special Agent Susan Marlan with Professor Eric Evans in a riveting installment in the Dead Remaining series.

It’s been a year since Special Agent Susan Marlan and Professor Eric Evans worked a taxing missing persons case together on the Olympic Peninsula. Though the couple have since separated, Eric must reluctantly turn to Susan for advice when a student accused of murdering his ex-girlfriend comes to Eric for help proving his innocence. Susan—busy tracking down two missing employees of San Francisco’s Gruben Dam—warns Eric to be cautious, as the young man has connections to Defenders of the Earth (DOTE), an ecoterror group operating out of San Francisco.

After the suspected student dies of an apparent suicide, Eric starts having visions that point to a more disturbing truth. Determined to figure out what really happened, Eric works with his old friend Jake Bergman to infiltrate DOTE.

As Eric continues to grapple with his newly discovered ability to see the dead, Susan’s missing persons case leads her to a startling connection between the campus suicide, her case, and the ecoterrorists. To put the pieces together and prevent further disaster, the trio must join forces once again.

My thanks to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for the ARC of Campus Bones! It's book 3 in the Dead Remaining series.

There are two mysteries in this book: The first is when a student accused of murdering his ex-girlfriend comes to Professor Eric Evans for help proving his innocence. The second is when Susan, a Special Agent with the FBI, is tasked with tracking down two missing employees of San Francisco’s Gruben Dam. Eric and Susan were once a couple, but they went their separate ways in a previous book. Adding to the mix is Jake Bergman, Eric's friend and TA.

I liked the characters a lot. Eric has a newly discovered ability to see the dead, which he is still trying to figure out. He has wisdom and a sense of humor - my favorite combo! Susan seems like she's on track for becoming a great Special Agent, although she's still a wee bit green right now. I loved Jake, who is a dwarf, and is hilarious!

Surprisingly, the two stories ended up having a connection that I definitely didn't see coming! Eric, Susan, and Jake make a great team. I generally read books that are more serious but I SO enjoyed this lighter fare!!

I think this rates somewhere between 3 and 4 stars. But since I can’t give 3 and 1/2 stars, I will round up to 4 stars. It was entertaining overall but seemed a little simplistic or maybe the characters were a bit cookie cutter. Regardless, it was a quick read and reasonably enjoyable.

I borrowed this title in Kindle Unlimited Read and Listen for Free, and listened to it in the Audible app.

Again, this installment is beautifully narrated\performed by Julie McKay.
I can happily report that the MMC, Eric's, failed marriage does not feature in this final book. I was wary that the author would create tension by forcing a confrontation with Eric's ex at some point later in the series. Thankfully, the plots were allowed to develop without that manufactured drama.

In this installment, we find Eric, Jake and Susan continuing to cope with the aftermath of the previous two cases and the unwanted notoriety\scrutiny they are subjected to as a result. Unresolved trauma and new job opportunities have pulled Susan and Eric apart, and Jake is truly struggling with his losses. A convergence of events (and entities) involving a group of militant environmental radicals bring Eric, Jake and newly minted FBI agent, Susan, back together for this final case. It provided a gratifying conclusion to the trilogy.

Thank you Brilliance Audio for the gifted copy.

This is the third book in Vivian Barz’ Dead Remaining series and I really like this series. It’s atmospheric, creepy and a great installment to what is becoming a favorite series.

While this book does work on it’s own, I really suggest you read the the prior books in the series before picking this one up. It will help you to get a better feel for the main characters and the dynamics of their relationships. Of course, Vivian Barz does give a little backstory here in this third book so that if you haven’t read the other books you won’t be totally lost, but there were enough times that events were mentioned from the other books that I’m glad I had already read them.

I love being back in the world that this author creates. It’s just the right amount of creepy and thrilling without being over the top. Once I start these books, I am completely engaged and do not want to stop until I finish – that’s always the sign of a captivating read and this latest one was no different. A missing college student, a suicide and ecoterrorism really keep things interesting and I had no idea where things were headed.

One of the reasons I love this series is because it’s such a good mix of thriller, mystery, police procedural with a little bit of paranormal thrown in. But where this installment shines is the extra development with our characters. While we have seen some growth in them all along, I feel that they really come into themselves in this book. Eric finally has a handle on his gift and uses it to the best of his ability. And Jake makes some major changes that I’m excited to see continue in future books…if this series continues!

This book is filled with just the right amount of twists and turns that keep you on edge and I loved every minute of it. I hope there is more to come in this series but even if there isn’t Vivian Barz is definitely going on my must-read list…I just love her writing and creative mind!

Audio thoughts: I was so glad to see that Julie McKay was narrating this third book. I am such a fan of consistency when it comes to narrators of series, whenever possible, and loved that she came back! I thought she did a great job with this third book, bringing the same voices back again as she had from the earlier books, which makes it so easy to jump right back in. Her intonation and pacing was spot on and she really does bring this book to life. If there are any more books in this series, I do hope she will be back to narrate them!

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Campus Bones by Vivian Barz is the third (and I believe the last) book in the Dead Remaining series. Definitely story felt finished. This one was more complex, cases were overlapping, no logic in between them, more questions and no answers.
It's funny how some just expect Eric to turn on his superpower and the case will be solved!
It was nice to witness a bumpy ride between Susan and Eric and it was good to see Jake again.
Same as the other two this is heart heart-pounding investigative thriller with unexpected turns all the way through.

Susan and Eric are not together but they still maintain friendly relationships. Eric is busier than ever and has changed geology teaching to unusual investigation. Jake is working with him as an assistant.
Susan accepted the FBI after and is enjoying, most of the days, her new special agent status.
They both start a new investigation and discover that there could be a link but no one can explain what kind of link! Or probably is just wishful thinking and reason to communicate?

3.5 stars

Campus Bones, was the book I picked up after reading a very slow-burn thriller. I wanted something light, mysterious and fast-paced. I’m glad to say that it was just I wanted it to be.

Although Campus Bones can be read a as a standalone. I found myself wishing I read the first two books in the series first. I felt like I would have been more connected to the characters and their history between one another more if I read them together. However, don’t let that steer you away from a solid mystery!

This one was creepy in all the right places and most definitely brought that chilling, college murder aspect to life.

Great Story, but Weak Ending

This third book in the "Dead" series was hard to put down; I wanted to keep reading to the end. However, when I finally reached the last chapter, I was extremely disappointed in the ending. It felt like Ms. Barz was tired of writing and just wanted to end the story by writing the shortest, most simple ending she could devise. If not for the lack-luster ending, I would have rated "Campus Bones" with five stars.

Do not hesitate to pick this book up and enjoy the read. I just felt the ending lacked depth. Although the ending was not, in my opinion, as thought provoking as the rest of the book, I am glad I chose it to read and would definitely recommend this Book 3 in the Series.

I really liked the characters in the first 2 books. I feel like you don't get as much in this book for whatever reason.

The story is good.

What is SO WEIRD is the way the characters speak in perfect edited English, like it's being published in a Scientific Journal;

.....EXCEPT the fact that no journal would publish such a derogatory and discrimatory term as "junkie". It's 2021. We have Science that explains it takes less than 72 HOURS for your brain to be completely rewired. I noticed that alcoholics get the 'respect' of being called that; although the proper term is Alcohol Use Disorder. (Opioid Dependence NOT "junkie". Not to mention the fact that most users never use needles or smoke opiates). Which was exactly what happened in this story when they drank the opium.

So-so murder mystery w supernatural touches.

After reading the synopsis, I expected paranormal crime fiction with some supernatural. The book starts slowly, as the author catches us up w her characters. I liked following FBI agent Susan Marlan investigating employee deaths at a nearby dam. I was intrigued by geologist Eric Evans’ new uni professorship, and by several student murders. When the emphasis shifted to violinist Jake Bergman investigating an ecoterrorist group, it felt like a reboot to the 1990s & early Aughts. As the author merges three storylines, there are inconsistencies, plot-holes, and unbelievable situations. Plot became more important than characters—resulting in confused motives, questionable actions, and irrational behaviors.

Example: I can believe a student Eric once met is haunting him. But then an unknown dead girl seizes control of his mind and body—like demon possession—leads him four miles to a river, makes Eric drown himself, then releases his mind, and as a fisherman is saving the dazed/confused Eric, the ghost yanks him down by his legs. How? What is she? After his miraculous rescue, Eric goes home. No hypothermia, no trip to ED, no doctor, no nightmares, no PTSD. Really? I think I’ll stop here.

Exceptional quick and intriguing series

The third book in an easy but intriguing read. I enjoyed the details of the main characters. I also was impressed that mental illness was addressed strongly in book one, but lesser in book two and three. I felt that was a great asset to the series. The development of each character was equally intense and highly realistic. This was a great short read that held my interest until I read the last book. If you enjoy quick reads that are well written, highly addictive, and hard to put down, I highly recommend this trio of books. Hopefully there may be more books with Susan, Eric, and Jake. The ending just makes you want to know what this unlikely group of friends will get into next. Hope you give this series a try. I believe you won't be disappointed.

I liked the continued storyline of Eric, Jake & Susan until the ending - it seemed a bit flat. I read the 1st in the series as well so I guess I was hoping for more suspense, a twist or something left to the imagination. I was hopeful the ending would have the strength of the narrative that comes about when Eric is having visions, it really pulls the reader into Eric’s experience and feeling. I prefer the unexpected and the ending in this 3rd book didn’t do that for me. Overall genuinely good read. The author makes it easy to read each independently of another or all in the series.

I was gifted a kindle copy during August 2021 Goodreads giveaway sponsored by the author, thank you!

Another Good Read

My third foray into the (mis)adventures of Susan, Eric and Jake.
After surviving the insanity that took the lives of their two friends in Hidden Bones the trio find themselves once again involved in more murder and mayhem.
Eric's psychic ability was more toned down in the book, which was a bit of a loss since that twist was one of the things that attracted me to the first book, but the author still spins a very good story about how dedicated environmentalists are so easily blinded by their cause that their actions become far more damaging than any other threat to life.
All in all an easy to read, but spellbinding book.

After being drawn in by The Forgotten Bones and on to The Hidden Bones, reading Campus Bones felt like a must—but unfortunately, it didn’t live up to the promise of the first two books. The pacing lagged, and much of the narrative was bogged down by excessive self-reflection and self-explanations, brought on from Suzanne’s point of view.

It felt as though the author may have lost some of the spark or vision that made the earlier installments compelling. I finished it out of commitment to the series, but truthfully, this one didn’t resonate with me. A disappointing close to what began as an engaging thriller series.

There are times when stress flips a switch in me and I read with urgency instead of leisure. Fast. Ferociously. Almost by inhalation.

That’s how I tore through Forgotten Bones, Hidden Bones, and Campus Bones — not slowly, not delicately, but in one of those rare stretches where a series becomes a pressure valve.

I logged only “review coming soon” back in March 2025 because I didn’t yet have language for what these books did for me. I still don’t, fully — except to say they carried me through a moment when my nervous system needed momentum more than poetry.

Full review to come, when I can return to them with steadier breath.

This book was an excellent continuation of the series, and it kept me on my toes until the very end. The first quarter of the book started off a bit slow (it took me a beat to recall where things left off from book 2) but halfway through things began to really ramp up. This book had just enough of the supernatural without being over the top, and it was interesting to see how Eric, Susan, and Jake have settled into their new roles. I am looking forward to seeing where this series goes next, and this is by far one of my favorite authors.

I’m really loving this series and the paranormal mystery aspect! I feel like it just adds to the mystery!
Well Susan, Eric and Jake have their hands full again with another mystery! With two mysteries going on you know this won’t be easy. A student asks Professor Eric Evans for help when he’s accused of brutally murdering his girlfriend, but when he’s later to have been discovered to have committed suicide by jumping off a building. Eric begins to investigate and when his ability to see the dead show him there’s more going on he’s soon lead down a dark path.
FBI Agent Susan is trying to solve the disappearance of two employees of San Francisco Dam, soon their cases begin to intertwine and they both try to uncover what the connection is and they team up to stop any further crimes. I truly enjoyed this book I finished it in a day! I love this trio and cannot wait until the next book!! Five stars!

Keeps getting worse

I gave the first book in this series a 5-star rating. The second, 4-stars. This one gets 2.
There is way too much unnecessary filler in this book that takes away from the story itself. The best example I can think of post-reading it the author’s decision to waste 4 pages talking about cooking. It was bland, boring, disappointing. It even read as if she was bored with her own story line.
Do better, or don’t do it at all.

I'm not her audience

Excited to get this book through a Goodreads giveaway. The prologue was promising but when I began reading the story, it was like slouching the mud - not engaging to me at all. And I tried numerous times to finish the book. I had to abandon it. At my age I don't waste my time on anything I don't enjoy. The fact that this is book 3 of this series indicates that its popular but I'm not the audience.

Incredible threequel!

This gripping third book in the Dead Remaining series finds Eric, Jake & Susan a year after the events in Clancy, WA. Susan has joined the FBI, Eric is a professor at Lamount University, and Jake is his teaching assistant. While Eric & Susan have broken up, the trio finds themselves having to work together to solve random, yet seemingly connected, crimes surrounding a group called DOTE. Don't miss this one!

Not a bad read

If your looking for a heart pounding, hold on to your seats thriller this isn't it, but it does have lovable characters and a storyline interesting enough to hook you in to wanting to see it through till the end. I enjoyed the other two books in the series and the first is still my favorite.

Campus Bones (Dead Remaining Book 3) by Vivian Barz

An unusual read with paranormal, FBI, small friends and a lot of evil happenings. A group of so called environmentalists lead a shady business and the lead players must figure out what is really going on. There are deaths, evil conduct, missing persons and how to tie it together. It is a good read.

so. good.

I love that this story was a little less about Eric’s “visions” (though I do love that aspect of the series) and more about real life.
The shock the book started with turned out as a happy ending so I’m happy about that. These three have been through ALOT. Hopefully they now catch some peace.

not too many ghosts in this one.

I really enjoy(enjoyed) this series. I gave it 4 starts because I felt it was a little on the slower side and there were only 2 ghost encounters in this book.

It’s just ok

After reading books 1 and 2 I was so excited to read 3,. For me this book was just boring with none of the excitement of the other 2 books. Sometimes author’s don’t know when to stop writing a series.

Final

The third book of the series was well-written. However there were areas that were very predictable as being the third book the team a disband. I did enjoy the book and felt it kept my interest through the plot.

Disappointing

Expected interactions with ghosts or spirits being involved in the story line but in the whole book there were only 2 small parts. Just the seeing of two who died, then no other mention

I enjoyed the third book in this series. I have really enjoyed learning more about each of the three main characters, Eric, Susan, and Jake. Eric’s ability to communicate with the dead, although at first completely a surprise to him has become more developed as the series has gone on.
