When a great assassin is reborn in another world, he finds himself the heir to a long line of killers from the shadows. With both his modern-day knowledge and experience and the special magic and techniques of this new world, he could very well become the most unstoppable assassin in history...!
I am never getting back the time I spent reading this. That's the sad thing.
When I was a mid-teen, I wrote a book. Home computers didn't exist then; I typed it manually. It's terrible. I still have the manuscript in a blue folder. I would die a thousand deaths before allowing anyone else to read it. I think it might be better than 'World's Finest Assassin.' Someone published this burning pile of putrid biological waste. They are making an anime. They have scraped the bottom of the isekai barrel so hard, noxious chemicals buried beneath to keep them from destroying society have seeped through and become this book.
Hyperbole aside, I skimmed huge sections because they were just repeats (verbatim) of text I'd already read, or they were just suffering porn, or such dreadful purple prose I couldn't cope. The protagonist is a complete bastard. If you can empathise with him, seek professional help. The characterisation is all over the place. The illustrator is good, and that is good because there's no description of more or less anything. The characters have a hair colour, maybe an eye colour, and they're beautiful (except for the evil ones, who are stereotypically ugly). The magic use is clever, but the author's research was poor and half the stuff which is meant to be 'real world science applied to magic' wouldn't work, even with magic. The protagonist has memorised the entirety of Wikipedia. He was hyper-competent before reincarnation; now he's just plain broken. He's a Gary Stu of the worst kind.
The last ten percent of the book was such a remarkable improvement, that it almost could've been written by someone else. It wasn't, because it has a lot of the same flaws as the rest of the book, but it is carried out with more competence than I'd become used to. If I could've just skipped to that part, I might have given this 2 stars. As it is, I'm annoyed I have to give it one.
Strangely, I have a bit of hope for the anime. With a competent scriptwriter (ignoring this novel almost entirely) and a good animation studio, this could be turned into something entertaining. That last ten percent, assuming some competent animators, will look spectacular! The trailer suggests they might pull it off, possibly. It is possible to make this kind of character work ('Misfit of Demon King Academy' Give me season 2 NOW!). The main problem is that people might watch the anime and think the book is worth a try. It's not.
I honestly felt as though I'd lost a small part of my soul after reading this book. I don't even believe in souls.
Kind of a bland male fantasy fic where the main character is monstrously good at everything he does, and the girls he runs into are all both indebted to him and love him unconditionally. There's a kind of cool focus on science as the MC reverse-engineers modern-day weaponry to create more powerful analogues in this fantasy world with magic, but with the exception of the final conflict, there's not a lot of urgency or danger involved in the challenges the MC faces.
I was incredibly amused at how hard Tsukiyo leans into that male power fantasy angle, though. The story gives the MC several absurdly dedicated female companions and peerless business savvy pretty quickly with little effort on the MC's part. It's very gross, honestly, but also very silly.
So I'm interested in the assassin reincarnation and general plot. Not so much interested in the fact that he want to marry his cousin and has two (basically) adopted sisters who are both in love with him. Is this what happens when you're an Isekai/Light Novel protagonist? Clearly a newbie to the genre.
I recently binged watched the whole first season of the anime. I was beyond pleased and delighted by the adaptation and how well developed the assassin character is. There are a lot of cute aspects that make the story fresh despite being an overused genre. I think the anime does a better job of organizing some of the events and really adds a lot more action and tension to the story.
So what would I like better? I think that most of this story has a very passive voice, almost a dull monotonous rhythm. In addition to this there is a lot of internal monologue explanations that just translate much better to a sequence on screen. Despite that, I really like the story and the characters and I'm more than happy to continue reading the series to know their story.
For those of you who know the anime, the entire first season is covered in this one volume. That actually impressed me quite a bit, one of the things I like to do is read novels and then theit various adaptions. More often than not the light novels are superior and it's just a matter of deciding whether the manga is better than the anime or vice versa. I have not read the manga yet, but so far the adaptation to anime only required one novel for the whole season. In other series that I have read and watched the anime either covers multiple volumes or doesn't finish the volume it's on at all. I was pleasantly surprised to have a one-to-one ratio for this one.
I only gave it three stars because I would be more inclined to recommend the anime than the novel. I think the novel is a reasonable option, and I do not regret reading it. I just think I'm more likely to rewatch the anime than reread.
I enjoyed the the story but it was just too short it only took me 4 hours to read and I have read other books that were just as good that cost last and lasted longer. So I found myself a little bit disappointed. I would only read the next book if it is less than $5
A strong opening chapter of the story. The main character is fun to read and the story uses the assassination theme as the core part of the story and not just a small part that is easily ignored. There is a manga adaptation of this but after reading both, the book has far more detail and character development than the manga. Overall, it has a very strong premise from the get go and has a firm grasp of the worlds rules and premise. Best of all, very few of those anime cliches right now.
The story of this book has a lot of potential, unfortunately the way is delivered is quite bland. The first volume is mostly worldbuilding and character development, so at the beginning is quite boring. The author tries to explain a magic system that is so overpowered for the main character that doesn't make sense. He literally can create any metal, including gold and silver, and still he looks for ways to have his house/domain economically stable. There are not fun moments or comic relief situations, and the few ones are just uncomfortable. The only battle is boring and so few action scenes that ends in just a couple of parragraph.
Overdoes it with the fanservice. It’s also a little weird given he’s mentally a grown man being flirted with by young children. Everything else was awesome. Looking forward to seeing how this former pawn puts his new social power to work in conjunction with his murder skills. And curious about the hero that the goddess insists must be killed.
It's an isekai with a male MC, you tell me what you'd expect.
I'd usually ignore the harem side to comment in reviews as they're usually the same thing but seriously, the author couldn't have provided a better roster? Perhaps it was hard to justify women liking the MC if not for spending ¾ of their lives where he's the only decent (gag) man their age. Seriously cousin or siblings, take your pick. Atleast two of them aren't blood related but ofc it seems he's choosing the only one who is! Perhaps I should mention the mom is perfectly totally not incestuous to a disturbing degree either..
The story tragically doesn't do justice AT ALL to its title and genre. The quarter before the MC reincarnates was actually amazing, I loved the characterisation even if he was a bit of a douche. The anime executed the introduction well too (just wish the "young adults" didn't still look like the children they were before, but I digress).
Most sadly for this novel is that the MC, supposedly continuing into his second life with the same memories and all but I found that it was really hard for me to justify his decisions as the story went on. I started leaping through chunks and to my unsurprise I didn't miss much at all. At one point I found the stories of the girls far more interesting, and I don't think that's a good thing.
It would've been one star if the girls were as boring as they were brain-dead. Luckily the progression of their back stories were clearly thought out, eventhough it's all for naught and their brains turn into mush after being "saved" by the MC.
Also, fetishes. So many fetishes. As far as male power fantasy novels go though, it's close to the bottom due to the lowkey disgust I felt on how the r@pe was handled, but still not the worst (That's for Mutsoku Tenshit).
Entering about 10 years later to the vast and even cliché Isekai (reincarnated to another world) market, the main character is highly motivated, highly over powered and an over achiever. The light novel is well written, the main plot is clearly stated. Everything the main character (0-7/9-12/12-14/14+ years old in this volume 1) does is masterly made. His contacts and future growth is strengthened in this volume. My only worry is that with this extreme tunnel vision of only having one objective, one mark, one specific assassination in his new life, in this alternate reality world, this story would be kind of flat and finish rather soon. So in how many volumes will the author complete the 17 years needed to reach the possibility of his only life-objective? I hope the author does not fill the later volumes with irrelevant and uninteresting side stories and characters. Other than this I don't have any other complaints or worries. I did not feel the content short or missing anything. This light novel already has one season of it´s anime. I feel the anime's explanations and episodes are better developed than this first volume. In the light novel there is no morbid emphasis in the rape, sexual assault and statutory rape of minor orphans. The author mentions it, but fortunately spends very little of the LN Vol 1 on this. This is super positive from other Isekai LN from authors with low emotional intelligence and an erroneous idea that in minors (rape, statutory rape, sexual assault sells - even though it is illegal to promote crimes, especially against minors to minor readers.)
Been waiting for this to come out for a while and it didn't disappoint. The story was well written and I know it will be a favorite series for me to follow. If I had to give one con it would perhaps be the illustrations. Not sure but I believe the manga had better character drawings. It's been a while since I seen it but that's the impression I have.
While the MC is reincarnated by a goddess with his ideal skills and past memories he is not fated to live a carefree and easy life. Instead he dedicates himself to rigorous training from an extremely young age. His goal is simple, convert the hero to a respectable person post demonlord or assassinate him before he causes untold sorrow in the world. Despite this ominous goal in life and being raised by a noble family of Assassin's
The good: interesting concept, likable protagonist, and good translation.
The bad: there are a lot of time skips, there's a lot of weird ecchi stuff, and the world building leaves a lot to be desired.
With that said, I did still enjoy this one and I think I will continue reading in hopes the other volumes are better. I'm not jumping straight into volume 2 though.
So 3/5 and I do recommend if you can look past the weird ecchi stuff.
I found out about Rui Tsukiyo through their other work Redo of Healer and was not disappointed to learn that they had another great story with World's Finest Assassin.
I think the translation could use a grammar pass, but the story itself is intact and got my imagination firing
I’m really enjoying this series… Yes, it’s an Isekai trope, but his mission his experiences. His reflections on his life are all new to the ones I’ve read… It makes him more real more interesting and definitely makes the story more compelling. Looking forward to reading the rest.
The World's Finest Assassin Gets Reincarnated in Another World as an Aristocrat, that's the whole story in this volume we get the start of the series , the world building and the character introduction , its not good but not bad novel so i might not read vol.2 soon
Another very rote isekai yarn that does little to distinguish itself from the pack. The anime provides greater nuance for the characters and their motivations, but also has been quite mediocre.
