This was “eh” to me. It went on and on with not much happening. There is a lot of talk about war but that was about it. Nothing really happened until the end and that wasn’t much.

I didn’t connect with the characters much and Adara’s negativity was never ending. This one just wasn’t for me.

I think this book is a lot better suited for a younger audience. For me, there was just too much amiss. There was too little world-building and too much focus on just one super-duper special girl, whom I fear will eventually turn into a Mary Sue. Other than that, nothing really happened. There was a lot of talk of war, but that's about it. There's some attempt at creating at least some historic background for this fantasy world with mages and battling kingdoms, but the heart of it is never really brought together. There are too many missing pieces. As if the author needed to hurry through any world-building only to get to the super special Adara, to then spend an entire book just talking without anything really happening. I had trouble connecting to any of the characters and the story.

Well written, but I struggled with the main character a little - her negative motivation dragged at the story horribly. I felt as though if she’d just spoken up we could have lost a lot of drama - which just made said drama feel forced by the author.

Overall I found this story somewhat disappointing and a little immature/angsty (which I’m sure many enjoy but I wasn’t in the mood for). This is a YA book so I don’t feel like I can mark it down too much for being angsty.

I’d recommend trying the authors other published work - unseen beauty - it’s fantastic.

DNF. I probably could’ve finished this book… but I just wasn’t interested. I didn’t connect with any of the characters, and there wasn’t enough tension to keep me hooked. Also, there was unnecessary cursing, a rather uncomfortable scene concerning the lowness of a woman’s dress, and Adara’s ravings over handsome Shamino became a bit much.

My first book of 2022 and it did not disappoint! I love Adara and Shamino and their compilacted past and finding a way to be together. The story was great and I enjoyed her writing. I loved the magic and Dragon Mages, it's a world I want to visit and have my own dragon.

Engaging!

A smart, sweet but somewhat foul-mouthed heroine takes matters into her own hands. I love the fact that the main character's active choices moved the plot along; this isn't a character who just lets things happen (much). Worth re-reading, my highest accolade.

This story had a lot of heart and was fairly entertaining. I liked it over all but it felt really slow for over half the book.
The lack of communication between characters was infuriating. The misunderstandings between Shamino and Adara were repetitive and the ending was, in my opinion, extremely unsatisfactory. It wasn’t an unhappy ending, but I personally wanted there to be a little more for the couples relationship in the end. They don’t even get a reunion when she wakes from injury…….
Also, maybe it was just me not paying enough attention, but I got a little lost in explanation of the Gift and the gems. I was thinking maybe the explanation could’ve been better, less vague, made more sense, idk.🤷‍♀️
The world building could’ve been cleaned up a little. It was very decent for a middle grade standalone book though! People have to realize that standalone’s don’t need too much info dump.
I gave it three stars but it didn’t completely dislike it. I’d still recommend especially to someone who hasn’t read a billion fantasies already. Someone who doesn’t like committing to a series.
It was enjoyable for the most part.

This entire review is quite spoiler-y... Love love love the dragons! There were a few things that bothered me, though.

Adara is a blue mage, a kind of mage that is only born once in a century. In that case, she's super rare and probably the only blue mage alive at the time. So why did everyone take the news of her being a blue mage so... calmly? Not that I like a special snowflake character but it doesn't make sense for her to be so rare and then have reactions be so underwhelming.

I feel like a lot of the character building and world building was very weak. I didn't personally feel very connected to the characters, and I didn't particularly care what happened to them. Usually, I always root for my favorite characters and am the self appointed captain of the main characters' ship, but I just felt no attachment. Also, Mettalise? She's great and I love her but she literally made like one or two not very long encounters with Adara and then she becomes bonded. It was as if the author suddenly decided that she wanted to bond the two but needed to quickly insert a scene with Mettalise beforehand so it wouldn't seem too abrupt. Additionally, the world building kind of sucked. We see maybe two kingdoms mentioned in the entire book, TOPS and it's as if no other places exist. They're not even mentioned in passing. Maybe this might seem nitpicky but its something I noticed.

Last thing that really bothered me (and then we're onto the good stuff, promise): the insta-love. Adara laid eyes on Shamino and PRONTO fell in love with how he looked. I can handle acknowledging that he's good-looking but the constant descriptions and gawking when Adara first met him had me putting down the book so many times from second hand embarrassment LOL. Adara guurl, get your act together. I did end up liking Shamino a lot later on though, and I was happy that they could be together. Sucked that we never get to see Shamino after the fight, though I can understand the artistic choice I guess.

Now. Onto what I liked.

Adara can hold her own in a fight, but the book portrayed her realistically and she did not suddenly become the best fighter ever after only training her magic for a few weeks. She dealt blows but also took some. Oh, and did I mention I love the dragons? So cute. Books with dragons are something I don't get enough of. I really enjoyed reading about Adara caring for the dragons and genuinely caring about them. I love me a kind heroine who also loves animals.

I’d like to first state that this book has a very good plot and a lot of interesting characters. Plus..who doesn’t love DRAGONS?!

But there were a lot of things that can be hard to look past. First off, I’ll start with Adara. She’s likable and relatable and enters a dangerous world that she truly knows nothing about and has to learn without asking the wrong questions. But her romance with Shamino is filled with stunted, awkward phrasing and rapidly evolves in a way that is not quite believable. And her connection with Mettalise baffles me. The dragon is known to be the most aggressive and yet willing to be directed. Mettalise shows an aggressive nature towards Adara, yet when Adara unlocks the key to her magic and is capable of bonding…Mettalise is just suddenly there and bonded? And then when Mettalise speaks to her, she is sooo fluffy and empathetic that it truly doesn’t match the original descriptive behavior of the dragon she is. I just couldn’t get behind the immediate kinship between the two of them. Especially when the author described dragons as highly intelligent, majestic, warriors. Would a warrior just start crying with a girl about a boy that she only knows for a few days? Sorry, but no.

The plot line is good, a lot of the twists are predictable. But I gave it 4 stars because it’s an easy read aside from some awkward scenes and I can’t get enough of dragons.

3.5 stars - an interesting world, with unique magic, and hey, who doesn’t love dragons? Some interesting plot twists at the end, but I was annoyed at some of Adara’s choices, and her passivity, especially for how intelligent she was supposed to be. I also wondered why powerful dragons would find nothing better to do than to focus their life on their humans, and fight in the humans’ wars. They felt more like a convenient vehicle for the plot line instead of their own characters, although I still did love them. Minor swearing, which was unnecessary and felt out of place - I liked the “ox brain” comments better because they felt more authentic to the setting.

Positives: I enjoyed Adara’s journey of learning magic, and how to take care of the dragons. I did like the romantic interest, even if I wanted to shake her sometimes. And the magic was interesting, I would have enjoyed learning even more of it. Overall, an enjoyable read, and I’m curious to see where the story goes.

May seem long, but it is a really good read

Though it felt like forever to get to the fight, the story is full of so much good stuff from the beginning to the end.

I love that the dragons have emotions and thoughts similar to humans, instead of only being beastly giants who fly and breathe fire. I am of the opinion that dragons are complex creatures of intellect and emotional awareness. The magic is presented as multi-layered in power and ability, which is far more interesting than the boring generic wand magic found in other fantasy books. There is intrigue thanks to the social structure of the world, and it really brings the tension into everything that happens throughout the story.

The main character, Adara, is full of flaws and strengths, making her likeable and relatable.

My only complaint is that I want more from this world. The story ended well, but I would love read a continuation of Adara's story.

This book was fantastic. I'm already ready to listen to it all over again.

When Adara shows hints of magical ability, she is offered a place among dragons and students, something as close to a home as she's ever had. Unfortunately, she has some pretty big secrets to keep in order to stay safe and welcome. And it's hard for her to know who to trust.

What I loved about this book, other than the dragons, obviously, was that the characters felt so real. They all had stuff to work through, to hold on to, to let go of, and they were also all such unique interesting people. There was also good worth fighting for. And good people who chose to do hard things, things that cost them dearly. I hadn't realized how much I longed for the good until I read this book. And good did win, though at a cost. I was satisfied. And now I want to read it all over again.

Good!

This ya, Magic academy in a cave with dragons in a S&S borderline epic background tries and mostly successfully does all of these things at once. The characters are all of their 16 years but the magic and unveilings were fun and interesting. I don't always love dragon rider books (fur no clear reason besides raging jealousy that dragons don't exist) but I liked this one.

I really wanted more out of the end, either a chaotic, satisfying resolution, or a book 2. I know how it's all gunna be ok but I wanted to see it in "real time". Yet it's a good book, worth the read, and fun.

It's a true YA but with curses which was a bit surprising given the youthfulness of everything, but that's ok. The curses were used gloriously in the second half and ending

I loved this book! The concept was so unique and creative! I felt like this book outshines some of the others' when it comes to creativity.
I also thought that the romance added perfectly to the story. There wasn't so much romance that it completely shifted the reader's focus from important points in the plot, but it wasn't bland romance. It added to the story and weaved itself into the story like a beautiful tapestry.
The acknowledgments at the end warmed my heart! It was inspiring to read about Amity Thompson's life when it came to this book. (I am also writing a book, and your life story gave me a huge boost in determination!)

Not for me...
I think a lot of elements were done superficially and in a too juvenile way
As in Beauty Unseen, Adara is in a dire situation but the writing doesnt communicate that

The author really needs to work on giving more depth and stepping up her angst
Emiliana\s character in this regard is still superior

I knew I wasnt going to like this book when already in the beginning we see Adara tell this unknown man everything about her life ....
not the best way to paint the character\s background and completely dissociated to her supposed situation
(running away from everyone)

I will also agree with some other readers that the worldbuilding was lacking

Amazing story & characters, writing almost as good

4.5 stars. The story was fantastic. Any "magic-academy" type books automatically get compared to Harry Potter as the standard and this one measures up as being unique. I can't give the full 5 stars because the writing doesn't quite measure up to the story. It was just rough in places. But in my opinion the story and characters overcome that and so I rounded up to 5 rather than down to 4 stars. The story wraps up nicely with possibilities for more, so not a cliffhanger but there could be more to come.

Part Dragonriders of Pern (Anne McCaffrey), part Dragon Jousters (Mercedes Lackey), with some magical schooling taking place in a cave, this book tried hard to be too many things at once. Everything was rushed (the magic, the schooling, the training, the romance, the rivalry, the Game/politics, the parentage reveals). Each of those plot points could have been fleshed out more for depth and to spend more time in this interesting world. I have a lot of unresolved questions about this world of dragons, mages, nobles and foreigners.

Pleasantly surprised

Things I liked: Beautiful cover art. Excellent writing. Interesting characters. Good character development. Not the most original plot, but very well written and with an unexpected twist.
Things I didn't like: plot occasionally felt rushed, and a bit too quickly concluded in places.
Overall, I quite enjoyed this book. I felt invested in the characters and I look forward to the sequel.

You have to read this one!

Okay, I loved this book!!!! I can’t say it enough, love that it had romance and mystery and action. The main character was amazing, she is so strong and vulnerable at the same time. I loved her talks with her god and herself. I laughed every time she used her (peasant swearwords) they were so cute. I really really hope there is another book I NEED to know what happens next!!

I loved this story and the situations. I loved the descriptions of the venue, reminiscent of Anne McCaffrey and J.K. Rowlings stories. What I did not enjoy was the lurid details of violence, particularly in a young adult book. Maybe the intended audience eats it up? I read books like this to escape from a world gone crazy - and I prefer fantasy violence to stay a bit more hazy.

This would have been a 4 or 5 star book for me, but I can't separate out the violence.

Great

I really loved this book. I just stumbled across this book and decided to check it out on a whim. I have no regrets. This book kind of reminded me of a book I loved as a teenager. It was similar, yet completely different.
I really liked most of the characters. This story really sucked me in.

Lucky pick

This was one of those books I just randomly chose. I am so glad that I picked it up. I am excited to see what comes next. The characters are well thought out. I actually felt more than just the MC was developed, not fully, but enough. The story has a nice flow to it. I will definitely be eagerly awaiting the next book.

Great story with great characters

I really enjoyed this book. The characters seemed real and had great development. Nothing was forced and for once, I didn't immediately see through all of their motives- which was delightful and, even better, they actually made perfect sense once revealed! This was a fun read and a book I can see myself rereading in the future.

This was a good book. I liked the relationship between humans and dragons. It seemed like the book was setting up for a possible sequel or series but could also be a stand alone. I wish there was just a bit more at the end to provide more closure but if there will be a sequel then maybe that is why it wasn’t all nicely wrapped up. Contains: mild swearing, fighting/violence, kisses.

Couldn't put it down

I really really loved this book! Another book I read praying there is already a sequel to binge-read, but alas, not yet. Characters are well developed and the dragons are amazing. I found it to be written much more imaginative than the cookie cutter " kids with magic at a school" books that are everywhere. Definitely hope a sequel is on the way!

Enjoyable Coming of Age Book

I enjoyed the book. It had enough action to satisfy and didn’t get bogged down with minute details. Adara is a strong character with all the angst of a teen, but easily swayed at times. I look forward to more of her adventures. Her relationship with the “First One” resonated with me.

Loved it

I chose this book on a whim and I’m glad I did. I fell in love with the characters and really want to know what happens next. This book reminds me of Eragon and The Last of the Firedrakes and a bit of a fairytale. If you like dragons and magic and the commoner who becomes something more and saves them all, you’ll like this one.

Fun interesting read

It’s funny reading more about how this book was created explained a lot about some of the roughness... but despite my reservations at the beginning the book came together in a fun and exciting story. The love interest had me hoping, the powers were exciting and felt fresh. And who doesn’t love a good dragon book??? Thanks for a fun read!

Generally liked this. Wasn’t a fan of her being 16 years old, but I never like teen MCs. The 19year old handsome Seneschal setup wasn’t great either.

The whole Thorkel-is-your-father bit was obvious and hackneyed and the happy ending/love bit in the finale felt rushed—there needed to be clear communication between characters and there wasn’t ever.

Intriguing and convoluted

This book is for anyone that loves dragons! Adara is thrust into a world she knows nothing about with only Tressa as a friend and guide about court life. Or is she? It seems everyon has lots of hidden secrets. This is one roller coaster ride! Very strong heroine.
