Ready. Set. Sparkle! Mario Kart meets My Little Pony in Glam Prix Racers, first in a full-color graphic novel series full of speed, glitter, and teamwork from Deanna Kent and Neil Hooson!
It’s the start of a new race season on Glittergear Island! Mio the mermaid, her monster truck Mudwick, and their team want to win the magical Glam Prix Cup.
But the Vroombot Crew of robots plan to cheat in the race! Can the Racers sparkle across the finish line first?
This full-color adventure is the first installment in a young graphic novel trilogy about a team of fantasy creatures and their magical vehicles who use speed, smarts, and friendship to race their way to the top!
This was a really cute graphic novel for kids who like Mario Kart and My Little Pony. This is the 1st in a 3 race tournament so I am assuming that this is a start of a series and the illustrations were really nice and the story was really easy to follow. There are 3 teams we follow the Glam Prix Racers VS Vroombots VS Cyclops Camper Crew and the Vroombots team is sabotaging all the sparklecharge stations because they want control of all the sparklecharge on the island for themselves since it lets them transform into multiple vehicles and which is used to power the other team’s racecars.
Thanks to Macmillan Children's Publishing Group and Netgalley for the complimentary copy of this book in e-book form. All opinions in this review are my own.
This fun, colourful, beautifully illustrated graphic novel is destined to be another kidlit hit from the creative team of writer Deanna Kent and illustrator Neil Hooson, the genius couple behind the Snazzy Cat Capers series. The Glam Prix Racers, are a terrific team of 10 - five vehicles with five drivers - who set out to beat the competition in order to take home the Glam Prix cup. Each character duo has a motto such as "Unleash the twirls" and "Three cheers for everything"(my personal fave), as well as ratings for qualities such as speed, engineering skill, tricks, energy, and creativity. Creativity is something this book has in spades. There are shimmering shadows, glitterschrooms, robot ogres, Vroombots (the obvious baddies), pirate puffer caves, and ghost garden gnomes. There's also adventure, challenges, drama, and a healthy dose of humour and supportive, positive messaging. After encountering the Vroombots for the first time, Flipp remarks, "There's an excellent chance the Vroombots are dangerous," to which Furie replies "Well, they're 100% not good about cleaning up after themselves." When the big race is about to start, and Mio and Mudwick agree both feel "Like there's a mud monster sloshing around my stomach", Mio says "I'm nervous too. Remember what my mom said? Every race is a chance to show up and do our best. It's all we can do." Do yourself a favour: Buy this book for the young readers in your life, and take the time to enjoy it with them. And don't be surprised if, like me, you find yourself wanting to join the Glam Prix Racers hanging out in the Fancy Forest.
Glam Prix Racers is (presumably) the first in a series about various creatures compete in a motor race. The plot is fun, but not overly complex. The illustrations are cute and add to the story. It will appeal to my younger graphic novel readers, especially those who like the pink and sparkly books.
I will add this book to my library's lengthy graphic novel wish-list. It is not a must-buy, but would find an audience in my library.
Thanks to the publisher and to Net Galley for providing me with an ARC in exchange for my honest review.
My children haven’t put this book down since we received it last week. They read it and then immediately started back at the beginning. They now carry it around and point out fun things in the book and quote their favourite characters. The writing is so fun, we love that all of the characters have their own strengths that they bring together to work as a team. The illustrations and colour have us all wanting to go back and look at each page over and over. We already can’t wait for the next one!!
A great graphic novel for younger readers that features teamwork and problem solving! Oh, and glitter! Definitely can’t forget the glitter! The illustrations are beautiful and the characters are fun favorites like a mermaid and a unicorn! Enjoy!
I want to say this is TOO cute?? Like, the style is so cute-focused as to be too much, somehow! I don't know.
I'm also not TERRIBLY familiar with actual Grand Prix racing, but it seems like a bad idea for the race to include SIDE QUESTS (like they have in this book), plus numerous unstaffed refuelling stations (that ) owing to the length of said race.* I get that it's fiction and can do what it wants—I just don't really understand it, and I like races more than battle sequences, since it's very obvious what the goal is (beyond "don't die").
*I do know that in more controlled races, refuelling is common to keep the car weight down but also is handled by a racer's team specifically to PREVENT mischief like .
I mean, there MUST be a target audience for this book. I just don't happen to be in it. It's definitely not a BAD book, and I can see younger readers liking it just fine. I hope one of said readers who checks out the free library where this is going appreciates it!
Really cute graphic novel about a race of course with some evil robots trying to unfairly mess up the race. Lots of cute illustrations and fun characters to make this book even more enjoyable to young readers.
