In Killer Comfort Food, the 5th book in the Farm-to-Fork Mysteries by Lynn Cahoon, someone is trying to take away Angie's farm. Neighbors are selling, but she and one other are the holdout. What's happening behind the scenes? At the same time, a dead girl's body is found and a friend asks Angie to search for missing daughter. One of the chefs at the famed eatery has an ex who won't stop harassing her. Is it all connected?

There are lots of fantastic reasons to read this series. All the wonderful settings. The delicious food. Strong characters. Solid writing. They are prevalent in this latest book, and I recommend starting from the beginning with this cozy mystery series. Cahoon brings a nice balance of levity and seriousness to her work. There are lessons but you're not hit over the head with them. You find lots of great relationships to dissect. And the reality (except the murder part, of course) of everything that happens in the restaurant and farm business is enlightening and intriguing.

As a mystery, this was nicely pulled together. I felt suspense and drama, but I also enjoyed sitting back as Angie did some digging. I found her relationship with the husband of the missing girl (also the lawyer for the company trying to buy up all the farms) a bit strange. Sometimes they liked each other; other times they did not. The husband even hugged Angie at one point, then a chapter later mentioned he disliked her and wanted her to leave him alone, to a degree. It definitely made me suspicious of him.

In the end, I found the scenes with Nancy's children heartwarming. Angie's boyfriend is kinda perfect; he can't possibly exist, right? Idaho is looking like a nice place to check out these days, friends! Start with this series and then decide to give 'em all a shot. Plus, the author writes several other fun series to explore too.

A trip back to small town Idaho outside Boise is always a great time to enjoy visiting with the County Seat Restaurant staff and their farm to fork cuisine. Angie Turner and her gang are a like a family and watch each other's back. In this story, someone is trying to buy up land to build a soybean processing plant and this includes Angie's farm passed down from her Nona. Because she is not interested, it seems to be sparking retaliation from someone involved. Angie is not the only one who is having trouble. Her chef Nancy is revisited by her ex and his new wife one night at the restaurant and scare tactics begin. Barb from the Red Eye Saloon next door wants Angie to find her daughter that she gave up to her sister when she was born, thinking she was not a great candidate for mother. Now that daughter is missing and her husband is an attorney representing the soybean plant, until he is put on leave. Are these events connected and if so, how? It is another time for investigating some strange events going on. Thankfully, Angie has her boyfriend, Ian, along with her restaurant family as they take care of each other. This is another great read in the series with some yummy sounding food too.

I enjoy every moment of the time I get to spend with one of my favorite cast of characters on page—the County Seat restaurant gang! Chef Angie Turner runs the yummy establishment with best friend, Felicia Williams who’s practically engaged to the second-in-command, Chef Estebe Blackstone.

Angie is stressing over a soybean plant that’s trying to strong arm her and her neighbors into selling their properties for the plant to build on. Angie loves her farm and animals—Dom (her St. Bernard), Mabel (hen), and Precious (goat), and doesn’t want to move.

A suspicious death plus a missing person send up red flags to Angie and friends that the soybean plant developers are into some shady business and could be possible murderers, also! There are red herrings throughout this well-written cozy. It’s exciting reading as the story develops and the author drops hints about what may come later in the story. Great read! I highly recommend the Farm-to-Fork series.

I reviewed a digital arc provided by NetGalley and Kensington Lyrical Publishing. All opinions are my own. Thank you.

Killer Comfort Food by Lynn Cahoon is the fifth full length novel in the cozy Farm-to-Fork Mystery series. As with most cozy mystery series each book of the Farm-to-Fork Mystery series can be read as a standalone if choosing to do so as each contains it’s own mystery solved by the end of the book. However, there is always a bit of character building within each read that carries over from book to book for those that follow the series from the beginning.

In this series Angie Turner has moved back to her hometown in rural Idaho after her grandmother’s passing and opened up a new restaurant, the County Seat. Angie’s restaurant has really taken off in the small town offering fresh ingredients straight from the surrounding farms. Angie has also gotten pretty good at solving the murders that keep turning up in the area although she keeps hoping to be done with her crime solving.

This time around Angie is dealing with the fact that a soybean processing plant is trying to move into her small town and buying up all the land surrounding her farm that was left to her from her grandmother. Angie is not ready to give up her land with her animals to think of and her grandmother’s memories all around her. As she tries to figure out what to do Angie is contacted by the owner of the local bar who thinks something is going on with the shady lawyer working for the plant and the coaxes Angie into looking into it.

The Farm-to-Fork Mystery series is another that I have followed from the very beginning and found that it has just the right amount of that quirkiness and humor that I enjoy a great deal. The main character and secondary characters in this one are quite likable and there are plenty of funny moments, a lot of cute critters and plenty of suspects to keep one guessing with the mysteries. As usual I’ll be back for more as long as this series continues.

I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Angie Turner’s main focus should be her farm-to-table restaurant, The County Seat, but the impending chance of losing her home has grasped almost all of her attention. A company is trying to bring a soybean processing plant to the area and they are buying up all the land around her farm but she is holding out. It was her Nona’s farm and she is determined to keep what she has inherited. Adding to her full plate is the death of a young woman and a missing woman who may be connected to the soybean development through her lawyer husband. She knows there is some shady business going on and finding the missing woman may be the key.

I have to start this review by saying I love the book cover. Nothing better than a St. Bernard getting into a bit of mischief.

Ms. Cahoon has her main character juggling a lot of balls in the air in this 5th Farm to Fork Mystery. Thankfully she receives some help from the supporting cast. What I love about these characters is that they are so true to life. People you would meet in any small town. Most with generous hearts and a willingness to help anyone they possibly can. Of course, you have a few bad apples out to line their own pockets and at least one that has resorted to murder but you need those dastardly characters to round out a killer cozy mystery. I really enjoyed how more of that supporting cast played larger roles in this story. It really adds to the development of the series as a whole. Nancy was one of those people and the way the people rallied to help her especially warmed my heart.

The author has written a complicated story with several mysteries to solve within these pages. She intertwines all of them together with a measured hand allowing each the time necessary to evolve and solve. A variety of suspects, drama, and suspense all draw the reader deeper into the story. I was entertained by the wonderful twists and surprised by some of the outcomes too.

Killer Comfort Food takes readers on quite a journey. I was kept engaged from the first page to the last. Family is the strong theme that prevailed throughout the book and I love reading books like this. In addition to a great mystery, there is a positive affirmation. I can’t wait to visit these characters again to see what happens next in A Fatal Family Feast.

This was a good edition to the "Farm-to-Fork" series by Lynn Cahoon. For a series I was not jazzed on when I started it, it has grown into being one of my absolute favorites [and I may or may not squeal out loud when I see a new one is coming out], and I look forward to visiting with Angie and her fabulous dog Dom, her funny goat Precious and the cranky chicken Mabel. Add in her [ever tolerant] boyfriend Ian and her best friend and business partner Felicia and all the crew at The County Seat, and it makes for a good story, even if there is a murder to solve.
This time around the story is a bit different. There is still a body, but there is also a missing socialite, an abusive ex and a startling revelation from someone that you weren't expecting [and I really wish this part of the story had been fleshed out a little bit more]. And to say anymore would really ruin this book - you think it is one thing [the buyout of homes and land from the new soybean company] but it truly ends up being something completely different. And even though I had most of it figured out, I was still left rather stunned at some of the reveal.
What I loved most about this one was how everyone seamlessly came together in trials - to help Nancy, to help Maggie, to help Angie. They worked together as a group and as a family and I truly think that if more of us could be like these fictional characters, the world would be a much better place. This was a very good read.

Thank you to NetGalley, Lynn Cahoon, and Kensington Publishing for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Killer Comfort Food is the 5th book in the Farm-to-Fork Mystery series. Lynn Cahoon gives her readers a delicious culinary cozy series set in Idaho with well-developed characters and mysteries that are engaging. In this installment, Angie's farm is at stake when a developer is buying up all the surrounding property to build a soybean plant. While good for the economy, Angie is not willing to lose her home and all of the love and memories made there. The characters in this series are all well written. They interact well with one another and give off a genuine feeling of family. Angie is caring and protective of her staff, who are all like family. Ian, her boyfriend, is a great balance for Angie - he's a bit more cautious and looks at the whole picture before diving into a mystery. I also enjoyed how some of the minor secondary characters who have been more in the background in previous books had a larger role to play in this book. It has been very enjoyable to watch the characters grow from their experiences and life lessons over the course of the series.

There are several mysteries intertwined in this book - a missing person, a dead body, and someone who is trying to scare Angie into selling her family farm. The author does a nice job of building suspense and providing some really good suspects for her readers. All of the various strings of each mystery are pulled together in the end for a very satisfying conclusion.

This is an entertaining cozy mystery series, with wonderful characters and engaging mysteries. Fans are going to want to make sure to add this book to their to-be-read list.

I voluntarily read a digital advanced reader copy provided to me by the publisher, Lyrical Press, through Netgalley. All thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.

A new-to-me cozy series by an author whose works I've read and enjoyed before. The main character is Angie, a chef restaurateur, who lives in her late grandmother's farm house with a dog, a goat, and a chicken. A development company is wanting to buy her and her neighbour's properties to convert to a soy bean factory. But, she's resistant and does not want to sell. Then she was asked for assistance to locate her neighbouring bar owner's daughter, who have disappeared. Of course, as is common in these kind of books, Angie discovered that all these things are connected to each other. It took a bit for me to understand who is who, since I have not read books 1 to 4. Being a chef, there's a lot of talk of food in this book, so be prepared. As for the ending, I can say I did not foresee who the perpetrator is.. The motives behind the actions were not really explained fully though. The focus is mostly on Angie and her friends and not so much the mystery. Overall, an average cozy read, but maybe not the best one I've read from this author.

I love all of the characters and it was fun to feel like I was visiting friends. As always a great addition to this series.

Chef Angie Turner has her hands full with all sorts of problems. Her friend Barb wants her to help find her missing daughter, a company wants her home/land and they seem to stop at nothing, a employee's ex is in town and causing trouble and then there is the missing woman's creepy husband. Also, there was a dead body found in the park. There do not seem to be any clues on what is going on but Angie feels some if not all of these things are related. Angie then finds herself in danger and wonders if she should just give up..

There is a lot going on in this story involving a number of characters. This keeps the pace going quickly and gives the reader a lot to try and figure out. Thanks to Lyrical Underground and NetGalley for an ARC. The opinions expressed are my own.

This is the 5th installment in the Farm to Fork mystery series set in Idaho. The County Seat restaurant is owned by Angie Turner and her best friend Felicia who source with food grown on local farms. Angie is getting a little nervous as a soybean processing plant is buying up all the land around her farm the one left to her by her Nona. There are many people in town who are attracted to the idea of a plant as it does provide needed jobs but Angie does not want to be surrounded by it and there is a vacant plant that could be used and not use precious farmland. She can’t move as she has built a nice home with all of pets (including a pet chicken, goat and dog). There are rumors regarding the marital issues of the lawyer who is pressuring people to sell and when his wife disappears he claims she has just left. Susan is the daughter of local bar owner Barb and she asks Angie and her friends to find her. There are mysteries within mysteries in this story and it definitely does not disappoint. The story kept me engaged and I continue to enjoy the local and friendships. This one is a winner.

Killer Comfort Food earns 5/5 Soybean Sagas...Engaging Fun!

The County Seat is a popular business and engrained in the community’s landscape, but trouble is brewing keeping Angie, the owner, up at night. River Vista has blossomed from a farm town to a more budding urban community with a variety of new businesses opening on Main Street, but a big corporation is flexing its deep pockets and buying up some of the small farms in the area for a soybean plant. Nona’s farm is not for sale, but what will she do if the other farms cave to the very well-compensated pressure? Development is often a good thing, bringing in jobs is important, but how will this change the small, close-knit community? To take her mind off those looming problems, Angie has answered the plea by friend and owner of the Red Eye bar. The friend is frantic about her missing daughter and the husband’s story about his wife’s whereabouts doesn’t pass the sniff test. Law enforcement is skeptical there’s anything there, but what would it hurt checking into it?. Are there connections to all that’s going on in town? What about the dead body?

Lynn Cahoon has again transported me back to my family’s stomping grounds in and around Boise, Idaho, with a very entertaining fifth book in her Farm-to-Fork Mystery series. The well-crafted drama entangles Angie and her friends in a typical David and Goliath fight with big agriculture, but Goliath isn’t what he seems. Angie is consumed by her friend’s plea to find her missing daughter who, wait for it, is the wife of the lawyer representing Goliath...clever, a twisty, turny delight! There’s a dead body to add a bit of suspense, and the final reveal was karmic closure. Lynn’s writing style using a third-person narrative keeping readers engaged with descriptive language to paint a small town, the farm, the various characters and dialogue to illustrate the personalities. She does well to make a couple characters act oddly enough to add to my suspicious nature. Family, however defined, is a central theme whether it’s the close knit restaurant crew, a loving boyfriend, or the boyfriend’s family along with a foster teen adjusting, an ex-husband harassing, a birth mother worrying, and a husband distraught-ing. The lives of The County Seat crew, River Vista residents, and the fur and feathered friends are just as enjoyable as all the mayhem and murder.

Lynn always includes a recipe, and in this book, she chooses a childhood treat that, for her, brought up some nice memories. For me, mince pies, Snickerdoodles, or a big pot of stew, even serving these foods on my Franciscan apple dinnerware floods my mind with memories of visiting my grandparents in Boise. Enjoy Lynn’s Quick Cookies, the first cookies she learned to make with which she did suffer a few bad batches, but she offers some tips to make your attempt a success. Oddly, the recipe seems to mirror some “no-bake” cookies my mother would make and stick in our school lunches. There were always extras for sharing, trading, or bribing.

Disclosure: I received an ARC from Kensington thru NetGalley. My review is voluntary with honest insights and comments.

This whodunit raises the bar on this Farm-to-Fork mystery series, one of my favorite “foodie” cozies. I love how the characters make the series, except they are more than mere characters. Angie and Felicia have put together a family of co-workers at the farm-to-fork mystery restaurant, County Seat, in River Vista, Idaho. Ian, Angie’s boyfriend, is part of the family, also. This mystery has many things going on at once, like real life can sometimes be.

Since moving back to town, Angie has been involved with several mysteries. She tends to get in them when someone she loves is a suspect or otherwise involved with situations. Angie lives on the farm that has been in the family for several generations, and if a developer has its way, she will be the last family member to live there. Her Nona had raised her there after her parents died, and she has memories in that farmhouse that she isn’t willing to let go of for any amount of money. If the proposed business, that will bring many new jobs to the area, succeeds in rezoning, she will have no choice but to see to them. The farm is also home to Dom, Angie’s lovable Saint Bernard, and Precious, an adorable goat.

Barb, owner and proprietress of Red Eye, a nearby country bar, knows how Angie and her friends have solved cases in the past. Her daughter has gone missing, and she suspects the husband is involved with her demise. Barb’s surgery for lung cancer is imminent and she would like to see her daughter Susan, nicknamed Sunny, before the surgery. Susan’s husband just happens to be the lawyer handling the needs of the buyer of the farms in the area, including Angie’s. When the dead body of a woman is found, it is a mixed blessing that it isn’t Susan.

Nancy, one of the chefs at County Seat, had a shock when her ex-husband and his new wife show up at the restaurant. She works three jobs to pay off the bad debts he left her with and raise their children. He is now a developer with a thriving business. Nancy’s home is broken into, they receive prank phone calls, and will move so he can’t find them and try to take the children. The County Seat family goes all out to help her as well as help find Susan.

This mystery invited me in at the beginning and held my attention throughout. I was definitely rooting for Angie being able to keep her farm, and if Susan was still alive, that she be found and reunited with Barb before her surgery. Nancy’s husband needed an escort to the state line! Learning more about Bleak, the teenager who works part time at the restaurant, was a delight.

The pace is steady in this novel; there were no dull moments! It moves along quickly and finishing it was a mixed blessing. Whodunit was a complete surprise; it was not someone I seriously considered. Despite the many challenges going on concurrently, all loose ends were tied up. I highly recommend this to those who appreciate well-written cozy mysteries, unique restaurants, and lovable characters and pets.

From a thankful heart: I received a complimentary copy of this novel, and this is my honest review.

Killer Comfort Food by Lynn Cahoon has us readers returning to River Vista, Idaho to tag along with Angie Turner and her friends. A big-agri company is trying to buy up all of the land near, and including, Angie’s farm to develope a Soy Bean Processing Facility. And they want the land cheap! Angie is determined not to sell her Nona’s farm so she can keep her memories and her little zoo intact.
Barb, the owner of the Red Eye Saloon asks Angie to help find a missing woman. The police have gotten nowhere with the disappearance. Angie discovers the missing woman is married to the lawyer who is representing the developer trying to get Angie’s land.
This story is a great addition to Lynn Cahoon’s Farm to Fork Mystery series. There is an unidentified body discovered, a missing socialite, some underhanded dealings and Angie is trying to figure out which puzzle pieces fit and which don’t before it’s too late.
I really like the characters in this series. The friendships are strong, like family. The characters are growing and moving ahead in life and there are a couple of romances in the works.
All in all a good cozy mystery.

Killer Comfort Food" the 5th instalment in the Farm to Fork Mystery series by Lynn Cahoon. I really enjoyed this story, and I love Angies Zoo as she calls them Dom the Saint Bernard, Precious the goat and Mabel the hen. One thing I enjoy with this series is the sense of family even if not blood, we choose who are family is by the people we trust and have in our lives. Angie has surrounded herself with a good group of people, Ian was such a calming presence for her.

The mystery is interesting and well plotted. I kept guessing and second-guessing myself on whodunnit right to the very end. I can’t wait for book 6 and find out what’s in store with Angie and her friends.

I recommend this book to all my cozy lover friends.

VERY quick listen! I got sucked into the mystery and had to know the ending! I wasn't sure if the case of the missing, the murdered, and the land-takeover would overlap or not. I think the way the author wrote the story was good! The ending was a little quick-ish and not too much actiony, but I'm not mad 🙂🙂 The relationship between the restaurant family is envious! I love Angie, Felicia and Estebe (and all the others)! It was a little weird listening to this because I listen to another series with the same narrator and the sidekick is named Angie in that one. I kept trying to put this Angie as the sidekick!! I know there's another novella for this series coming soon, but I hope we get more full length novels too!

Angie Turner is busy with her restaurant, The County Seat, a farm to fork restaurant in Idaho. When a soybean processing plant is trying to buy local farms, including her own, she is determined not to sale. When Angie is asked to look into the disappearance of an attorney's wife, she agrees. KILLER COMFORT FOOD is the fifth book in the Farm-to-Fork Mysteries by Lynn Cahoon. One of the strengths of this series are the characters. From protagonist Angie Turner, to her best friend, Felicia, who is also co-owner of their restaurant the County Seat, to the animal characters, each are well-developed and grow with each new book. I adore Angie’s pets: Dom, the adorable St. Bernard, Precious the goat, and Mabel the chicken. Each has their own individual and charming personality. Also central to the story is Ian, Angie’s almost-too-nice boyfriend. It’s been enjoyable watching their relationship unfold over the course of this series. That said, Killer Comfort Food can be read as a stand-alone but for the full effect of the characters, starting at the beginning is worthwhile.

There are several subplots that weave together in this cozy mystery. Tethering the mystery is the soybean processing plant that is pressuring homeowners to sell their property, including Angie. While most townspeople are all for the plant coming in, Angie does not want to lose her small farm bequeathed to her by her beloved grandmother. Could the disappearance of the wife of the attorney representing the processing plant have anything to do with the grab for land? Could the Jane Doe murder victim be connected? Why is the local bar owner begging Angie for help? And who is threatening one of Angie’s employees? Ms. Cahoon writes a well-paced plot that ties incongruous clues together into a cohesive story. With a heartwarming wrap-up, the author will have fans eagerly awaiting the next release in this charming series!

Angie Turner finds herself still fighting alone to prevent the soybean plant from building on her land. While everyone in town is excited for the jobs, Angie has a “Just not in my backyard” take on it. Selfish? Maybe, but the house is the only thing she has left of her family and it holds so many memories for her. As the corporation gets more aggressive it looks like Angie may be in danger and Ian has taken up residence in the house to keep her safe.

When the wife of the attorney who keeps trying to get her to sell goes missing, Angie is asked to help find the missing woman. Not sure whether the woman left her husband or was killed by him, Angie digs a little but doesn’t find much. Between the soybean corporation and looking into the woman’s disappearance, Angie realizes she may just need to give up and keep herself and her animals safe. But Ian, Felicia, and the crew always have her back. But will that be enough to keep Angie alive?

I adore this series! Mabel, Precious, and Dom have won my heart ten times over. Add to that the writing of the very talented Lynn Cahoon and I am hooked! You cannot go wrong with any book from this author. She writes solid whodunits that keep you going back and forth through the suspects with all the red herrings. Be sure to check out the recipe at the end.

All the usual characters appear prominently, one brought further into the storyline than her normal position as line cook at the County Seat.

The author weaves several storylines together, managing to make them all interesting and not distracting from each other. The restaurant’s crew’s sleuthing is mostly left to the professionals (for a change) but ongoing threats to Angie’s home and property throw the group in the midst of investigating. A friend’s missing daughter, unscrupulous land developers and nasty ex-husbands all play roles here.

If I had to find fault it would be the lack of explanation for the crime. As readers we’re expected to determine for ourselves the perpetrator’s behavior. Jealousy? Revenge? Just straight-up crazy-cakes?

It’s a nice addition to the series and written with more thought and care than some in this series. But still left some unanswered questions.

Lynn Cahoon
5 Stars

If Angie doesn't sell, she'll be surrounded by the plant and the congestion that comes with it. On the other hand, it's Nona's farmhouse. What is Angie supposed to do without it? Move into a condo in town with Precious, Mabel, and Dom—respectively, a goat, chicken, and dog. Worse, a troubling rumor is circulating about the lawyer who's heading up the development: His socialite wife seems to be missing. When Barb, owner of the local bar, asks Angie to look into the woman's disappearance, she's hesitant—until Barb reveals her surprising connection. Now it's up to Angie to find the woman, uncover a shady plot, and hang onto her home—before she becomes a criminal's final course …

Review:

The writing style flows smoothly and the book is an easy read. The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and this helped me get into the story from the very beginning. I could picture things very clearly in my mind’s eye and helped me stay engaged throughout the whole book.

The characters were well developed and well defined. Angie and Ian are getting along really well, their relationship is moving along nicely. Angie and Felicia are hard workers and all the people that work at the County Seat are like family to Angie. Which is just how she likes it. There is a mystery to solve, and Angie and Felicia are all over it. Angie also has to try and figure out a way to save her Nona’s farm and the animals that go with it. She has her work cut out for her.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery. These books just keep getting better.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book provided by the publisher, Kensington Books, and NetGalley, which I greatly appreciate.

Even though I have only read two other books in Lynn Cahoon's Farm-to-Fork Mystery series set in a restaurant, 'The County Seat' in Idaho, I still jumped at the opportunity to read this one, Killer Comfort Food as I enjoy a well written cosy, and this looked like it fitted the bill.

Angie Turner runs her own restaurant alongside her best friend, Felicia. In this story, Angie has a few problems when she learns that a soybean processing company, Taylor Farms, plans to buy the land surrounding the farm. If she sells, she will lose the farmhouse her nana bequeathed to her, but if she doesn't she will be surrounded by the plant and everything else that comes with it. When Susan Ashley, the wife of the solicitor in charge of development goes missing, Angie is called upon to delve into the disappearance...

Although there is some character building in these stories I had no difficulties keeping up with characters and events, and this book can be enjoyed as an individual instalment. The plot was fun and lively and Mabel, Precious, and Dom, Angie's hen, goat and St Bernard dog have really won my heart. A compelling tale, there was a very strong family theme running throughout, together with a heavy focus on other relationships and friendships. Events moved along at a comfortable pace and the mystery itself was fantastic with the ending turning out to be something of a surprise. I had a blast reading this highly amusing and entertaining cozy mystery and I'm already looking forward to catching up with Angie and her cohorts in book #5.5, A Pumpkin Spice Killing, as well as grabbing copies of the books I've missed.

I received a complimentary copy of this novel at my request from Kensington Books via NetGalley. This review is my own unbiased opinion.
