“The two sisters loved all kind of sports: basketball, street hockey, and of course… soccer. It was their brother Brian’s favorite game. Chasing the ball like a wild animal, Megan ruled the soccer field.”

Megan Rapinoe was born in California eleven seconds before her twin sister, Rachel, and I’ll bet she never lets her little sister forget that she’s older! The twins I know always tease each other about their different ages.

The tee-shirts of the Rapinoe kids have the initial of their first names

She loved her sport, but she had a hard time fitting in at school when the girls were all talking about boys.

“Megan felt different from most of the other girls. She preferred sweatpants to skirts, and short hair to ponytails. But she knew there were lots of ways to be a girl. She just wanted to be herself.”

Megan on her own – note the trophy above the lockers

But she was a popular soccer player, and her parents did all they could to help their girls excel.

Megan and Rachel with their team, while their parents cheer from the sidelines

She and Rachel both trained hard and were so talented that their parents made long round trips to training when they began playing in the Women’s Premier Soccer League. They both won scholarships to the University of Portland. While Megan was there, she realised she was gay.

She played soccer around the world, and before she went to the London Olympics, she decided to announce that she was gay to help support other gay athletes.

Megan making her announcement

The US team won the Olympics and later won the World Cup, prompting New York City to give its first ticker tape parade to women athletes.

Megan and some of the players in the ticker tape parade

This is a good celebration of a talented athlete and a brave young woman who chose to share a very private part of her life to a worldwide audience in order to help other people. As well as being an elite athlete, Megan Rapinoe seems to be a very special person, and I’m delighted to see her featured in this series. I’m also pleased that her sister gets some credit, too.

“Megan was always ready to defend the causes she believed in: from equal pay to equal rights for everyone. Together with Rachael, she ran a camp for kids, based on the values that made her great: working hard and having fun.”

Thanks to NetGalley and Quarto’s Frances Lincoln Children’s Books for the preview copy.

Great first look at one of the great athletes of our time. Really admire Megan because she stood strong; not only on the field - but off the field as well. There are so many professional athletes that are just into what they can get for themselves; they really don't care about their team or their teammates. Megan set a great example for future pros to follow!

Part of the Little People, BIG DREAMS! bio series for young readers by Maria Isabel Sánchez Vegara, from Spain. I saw this at the library and thought maybe it was the first kid bio of her, but no, it turns out there are a lot of them already! This one is fun, for younger readers, and inspiring, about the glbtq activist football player much of the world knows from the World Cup and the Olympics. That amazing goal she scored from a corner kick at the Olympics??!! Unforgettable. And oh, yeah, she has done it now twice at the Olympics:

https://www.insider.com/video-megan-r...

Plenty of conservative people seem to dislike her; it sort of amounts to "shut up and kick the ball!" such as what some crowds said to the Dixie Chicks: "shut up and sing!" which only seems to keep her playing and speaking and smiling, with style. Equal pay for women? She's a central spokesperson for U.S. women's soccer as this continues to not happen!? This little book tells us about her soccer-crazy family, including Megan's twin sister Rachael. Both of them got college scholarships for football by playing in the Women's Premier Soccer League and have run camps for girls. Cool book illustrated by Paulina Morgan.

This series is always a joy to read, its a really nice introduction to well known people for little children. Of course the plot is always a little bit fast but thats to be expected and its totally understandable.
This one here is about Megan Rapinoe, a very talented and famous American soccer player. I know how good the US National Women's Soccer team is and if it is that good, it's also thanks to her. She's such an inspiration for people all around the world and I'm so looking forward to seeing her future soccer career and just her future in general.

The exceptional Little People, BIG DREAMS series prides itself on providing child-friendly biographies of renowned public figures and celebrities and in this, the fifty-fifth book in the series, we explore the life and times sportswoman Megan Rapinoe, Olympic gold medalist and two-time Women’s World Cup champion and a galvanising force for social change where she urges all of us to take up the mantle, with actions big and small, to continue the fight for justice and equality. Rapinoe is one of the most important voices in sport today and who will no doubt inspire a whole new generation of girls to follow their dream and take up sport regardless of whether it has traditionally been played by a certain gender. She teaches and reminds us that sport is gender less. The sports world, and in particular the football sphere, takes a huge step forward in terms of inclusion when Rapinoe stood up and advocated for sport for EVERYONE and her legacy does and will live on.

This potted biography runs from his birth, early years and the beginning of his love affair with football/soccer. It’s written in such an empowering fashion that gives children the message that they can achieve their dreams whatever they may be. What's impressive is there is just enough here to enable a child to become curious yet not enough to overwhelm, and the colourful, fun illustrations complement the text perfectly. It's an educational and entertaining read that empowers young ones to pursue their dreams without limits and inspires children to dream bigger and realise their fullest potential, by introducing them to extraordinary people throughout history. It's a wonderfully engaging and simple to understand book that also helps kids with literacy and fosters an enjoyment of reading. You simply cannot go wrong with this series in general as everything is executed perfectly and tailored beautifully to youngsters. Highly recommended.

I received an advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.

Megan Rapinoe is one of the latest editions to the Little People Big Dreams series by the amazing Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara.
In this book children learn that it is okay to be who you are and to embrace being an individual. It points out that not everyone likes the same things and this is not a bad thing. Megan Rapinoe is a positive role model for children, especially girls, and I like the fact that the series is focusing on role models who are still alive as well as ones who are deceased.
The illustrations are bright and will draw the reader/audience into the story.

I’ve read most of the books in this series, and I think this one might be my favourite! The artwork is appealing, with unique characters design and an attractive colour palette. The text is easy to follow, with well-chosen language. I didn’t know much about Rapinoe before reading this, but it gives a great overview of her background, sports career and also her charity work. Also, importantly, it holds her up as an LGBT trailblazer using language and concepts that children can easily understand. I wish books like this had been around when I was a child.

Another fab addition to the Little People, BIG DREAMS! bio series for young readers by the talented Maria Isabel Sánchez Vegara, a writer and creative director from Barcelona.

I love this newest on soccer star Megan Rapinoe, with such inspiring text, illustrations and photos. You get a real sense of her early gift for the game, as well as the courage it took to come out gay. As Megan accepted herself more, her game and life flowed more easily too. Offers moving insight into one of soccer’s greatest players.

Another fine example of what makes this series, Little People, Big Dreams so relatable for young people. Some of the mini biographies are of individuals who bestride consciousness from the twentieth century and others are a revelation and a delight to become familiar with.
Megan Rapinoe is a American soccer star, her career coinciding with the rise of women’s football where the USA has led the way in professionalising the game.
Yet her contribution isn’t a tag on but more a principle role. Her attitude, advocacy for change and above all her talent on the pitch has cemented her celebrated status as an acknowledged role-model.
Born into a sporty family she excelled in organised ball games and learned to be competitive and be her best. Ideally living in California she was able to access organised soccer leagues and competitive football. Her skill and talent were recognised and the collegiate system enabled her to be win a scholarship in soccer which ultimately led to a professional career.
I have always followed football in the U.K. and within the last couple of years the women’s game has achieved an elevated status with a professional structure and leagues across Europe. I have no doubt that this is partly due to the National side’s success in tournament football. Not withstanding the standards set by the USA side and the pivotal role played by Megan.
Her struggle for equality also impressed me as some professional sportspeople can focus solely on their careers. Megan placed that all in the balance when she came out in 2012 to declare her sexuality.
It might not seem groundbreaking today but within the men’s game, there has be a series of poor treatment in areas of race and sexuality. Gay footballers are historically reluctant to expose their sexual orientation.
Megan is a new name to me, since I haven’t followed women’s sport directly but she is a worthy entrant in this series and a name I am unlikely to forget.
The artwork and colour palette beautifully compliment the text this author manages to always find which tells the story and elevates the subject to someone you and any child would like to meet. The simple writing in short snippets with lots of action illustrations ensures each story is well told and memorable.

Do you love non-fiction? Do you love picture books? Do you wanna learn about some truly awesome people in a biographical picture book? This series is perfect for you! It makes learning fun.

Megan Rapinoe is a famous soccer player and has one interesting story to tell! She's a twin, she's headstrong and wants to be herself, and is one incredible athlete. She ws apart of the US Olympic Soccer team and is apart of the LGBTQ+ community. She's one powerful woman who can easily inspire anyone! If you want to empower young soccer players (or even just young girls), then this book is a great way to inspire and motivate.

Little People, Big Dreams is a must read series for those looking to add some non-fiction, biographical, picture books to their shelves.

Three out of five stars.

The publisher provided the ARC of this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

The ‘My First Little People, Big Dreams’ series provides informative and inspirational biographies about people who left a mark on this earth, no matter what difficulties they have encountered.
These stories are concise, but that’s because they’re books for children, so it’s totally understandable.
I think they are a brilliant and wonderful way to introduce little children to such important figures.
This one here is about Megan Rapinoe, the famous Olimpic footballer. Her life and achievements indeed are great examples for every single one of us. I'm so glad children have the opportunity to read about her and to learn to embrace their own identities and to follow their dreams.

Yes! Another picture book in the Little People Big Dreams series! This one focuses on all star soccer player Megan Rapinoe who helped lead the US Women's Soccer team to victory. Like the other books in the series, this one is filled with fun, colorful illustrations that highlight various moments. We see Megan as a child playing with her sister and then developing her talent and passion for soccer. The book is also LGBTQ positive in that it discusses Megan's pride in being part of the LGBTQ community. This book is perfect for girls who feel like they don't quite fit in and want to follow their own path.

While I think it's still a majority of this series of books for young people that concern dead subjects, the number of volumes about positive role models who also happen to have the advantage of being alive is growing. And few could count for more than Megan Rapinoe – or so it appears on this evidence, for women's football really doesn't float my boat. That aside, the fact she was a world's best, one of the few notable homosexual sports players, and someone who sticks up for being true to yourself, all go to qualify her as inspirational. It's a shame then that this isn't a very attractive volume – she looks a punky sort of creature, until 'Boom' she outs herself and there she is in full-on purple La Roux hair, despite all the evidence to the contrary from the photographs on the teachers' notes pages at the back. I think you can correctly infer I had no idea who this woman is, beyond being able to match sport to name, but I was glad to have this quick introduction. These books are all about the positive messages, and the majority succeed. While this tried its best to fail when it comes to the visuals, it's another win for the series.

This is such a good series of short picture books about famous people, and I love how often we have contemporary and living people. This one, on Megan, the huge soccer star is wonderful. Nicely done, and shows her life and trials and such.

This is a good introduction for kids that might be interested in knowing more, or even in knowing about sports figures. Good introduction all around.

Until the 2019 Women’s World Cup I had never heard of the name Megan Rapinoe. And then she burst onto my radar for many reasons; her football talent, her colourful hair and her honest and outspoken views.

From an early age Megan loved sport. Whilst her classmates were chasing the boys, Megan was chasing footballs and dreams of football stardom. Megan’s footballing journey would see her go from a young child playing ball sports with her siblings to playing football while at Junior high before getting a college scholarship which ultimately led to professional contracts that would see her play in three different continents

Her hard work, determination and talent led to many successes on the pitch - winning numerous trophies including Olympic gold, the World Cup and personal accolades for the scoring the most goals at a tournament and being the tournament’s stand-out player.

Megan’s talents went beyond the football pitch and I love her honest views. Being a gay athlete is something that has often been discussed in the media and it is something that many athletes choose to keep to themselves but Megan wanted the world to know that she liked women and wanted to be an example to other athletes. This is such a wonderful message to young children - be comfortable with who you are and celebrate it. Even as a child Megan knew she was a bit different from the other girls - she preferred to dress differently and wear her hair in a different style - but she didn’t shy away from these differences, she embraced them because Megan knew, “There were lots of ways to be a girl.”

Megan worked tirelessly both and off the field. Whilst she was winning on the field she was also winning off the field too. She has passionately spoken about seeing equality for men and women in sport and set up a football camp for children where they could have fun and work hard, just like she had done when she was young.

Megan Rapinoe is a true inspiration to young children and gives all the right messages. Adults often tell children to follow their dreams and to be proud of who they are but at times it may feel that these words are simply being said without conviction. Rapinoe is the proof that children need, the words mean something and are one hundred percent true and achievable.

Delightfully illustrated with bright and bold artwork and with a story told in short and simple sentences, this is a great read for aspiring athletes. At the back of the the book there is a short overview of her life so far which includes key facts and dates and a historical timeline featuring photographs.

Recommended for 5+.

Originally published on my blog: Nonstop Reader.

Megan Rapinoe is a new biography for young readers in the Little People, Big Dreams series. I've reviewed a number of these titles and all of them are delightful and exuberant little books which cover the lives of famous cultural, science, arts, and innovation icons while maintaining an age-appropriate level of detail. Due out 2nd Feb 2021 from Quarto on their Frances Lincoln imprint, it's 32 pages and will be available in hardcover, and ebook formats.

Written by Isabel Sánchez Vegara it's well written in clear accessible language. The whimsical and energetic illustrations were well done. The art by Paulina Morgan is full of fun - appealing and colorful, they just bounce off the page. The illustrations are bold and full of bright contrasting colors and simple lines and lots and lots of energy.

Well written and appealing, I am really enjoying all of these little books. This one is a worthy addition. The author has included a timeline at the back of the book with some photos and highlights from Ms. Rapinoe's life, as well as a very short bibliography including books to explore further.

Five stars. This would make a superlative reading circle book, classroom library book, or gift. I like that these books cover arts, sports, science, historical, and entertainment icons. There's something for everyone.

Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes

Author: Maria Isabel Sánchez Vegara
Illustrator: Paulina Morgan
Age Recommendation: Early Primary
Topic/ Theme: Football (Soccer), Identity, LGBTQ, biographic.
Setting: America
Series: Little People, Big Dreams

One of the core themes of this entry into the Little People, Big Dreams series is being loyal to who you are. Rapinoe is a lesbian, has been on some level aware of that since she was young and has been out since 2012. It is uncommon to hear of queer sportspeople, those that exist are nearly all women. Rapinoe aims to be a leader among them and an example that you can be a top-level athlete and yourself at the same time. I think this is quite a well-balanced book. It balances the aspects of Rapinoe's life, sport, success, self and community work. It's not my favourite in the series.

Something in the art feels a bit off like maybe Morgan's art style wasn't the best choice. Colour choices maybe I don't know. Megan Rapinoe has a twin sister, Rachel both are featured heavily. In the early pages, they are identified by M and R on their clothes, later by their hairstyles. I do like the choice to keep her hairstyle the same even when the colour changes. It was inevitable that the colour has to change but the style means young readers know exactly who they are looking at or for. The end pages are not quite what I expected. I expected footballs but the choice to add confetti was a brilliant touch given Rapinoe's long-running success. Both personal and as a part of a team.

Megan Rapinoe is book in the Little People, Big Dreams series and is a children's picture book written by Isabel Sánchez Vegara and illustrated by Paulina Morgan. It is a cursory biography of Megan Rapinoe from her humble beginnings chasing a ball in Redding, California to become the captain of the US Woman’s team, leading them to Olympic Gold and World Cup Victory.

Megan Anna Rapinoe is an American professional soccer player who plays as a winger and captains OL Reign of the National Women's Soccer League, as well as the United States national team.

Vegara's text is rather simplistic, straightforward, and informative. It starts off with a young Megan Rapinoe growing up in Redding, California and her love for sports, which would eventually lead her to win Olympic Gold and a World Cup Victory with the team she lead. Backmatter includes a concise and informative biography timeline of Megan Rapinoe's life. Morgan's illustrations are drawn well, albeit a tad simplistic, but depicted the narrative rather well and apropos to the target audience.

The premise of the book is rather straightforward. It depicts Megan Rapinoe's childhood in Redding, California, where she does not fit in except on the field and through hard work and passion she became a profession soccer player, who led her team to win many awards. She also used her platform to advocate for women's, LGBTQ+ rights and their representation in sports.

All in all, Megan Rapinoe is a wonderful biography of not an amazing soccer player, but an advocate for women's and LGBTQ+ rights.

WoW! Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara books must be one of the best little books to purchase for children, these are the best-selling series of books and educational games that explore the lives of outstanding people, from designers and artists to scientists and activists. All of them achieved incredible things, yet each began life as a child with a dream.

So, this latest book is Megan Rapinoe about by Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara and is just brilliant throughout.

" Growing up in Redding, California, Megan discovered her calling chasing a ball on the school playground. Even if she didn’t always fit in at school, she was a star on the field—and her teammates thought so too. Her passion, skill and leadership took Team USA to Olympic Gold and a World Cup victory, while she continues to champion women’s and LGBTQ+ rights and representation in sports, in the US and across the world."

This inspiring book features stylish and quirky illustrations and extra facts at the back, including a biographical timeline with historical photos and a detailed profile of the US co-captain’s life."

It's one book, you should definitely buy for your little readers so they can learn about this wonderful artist.

I am so glad these books are being published and I highly recommend all of these books

I love the books in this series and always find something new in them. I wasn't sure if I had heard of Megan Rapinoe, but once I started this book, and looked at the photos at the back, I recognized her right away. This book, like the rest in the series, focuses on a young girl who followed her dreams, went against the expectations and succeeded. Megan Rapinoe is a famous soccer player with an interesting story. She's a twin, she's headstrong, has a lot of athletic skills and interest and she wanted to become an amazing athlete. Megan worked hard and became a member of the US Olympic Soccer team. She is also part of the LGBTQ+ community and works hard to promote acceptance and normalcy of its members. She is an inspiration to many with her drive, high expectations of herself and her achievements. Normally, I enjoy the quirky illustrations in these books, but this one fell a bit short for me. First, I had no idea who Megan was until I looked at photographs of her. The illustrations did not come close in my eyes. I do enjoy these books and recommend them to families, schools and classrooms to show how Dreaming Big can have amazing results. I was gifted a copy of this book upon request. The rating and opinions shared are my own.

Feisty, talented, outspoken Megan Rapinoe is the latest little person with a big dream in thisseries of short biographies for young children. Kids will hopefully be inspired by this amazing soccer player and activist. I know that I was!

There are interesting facts for kids here. For example, Megan is a twin and she had a brother with whom she loved to play soccer. Readers will also learn that Megan felt different from others growing up and that soccer was a refuge for her. It also provided her with a college scholarship. This book also touches on Megan’s identifying as gay and her belief in rights for all.

The illustrations in this title are sprightly and fun. They add to the accompanying text. All in all, an excellent entry in this long running series.

Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this title. All opinions are my own.

Megan Rapinoe is personally one of my favorite humans and I have been looking forward to this addition to the Little People, Big Dreams series for awhile. Rapinoe is an excellent role model--many would say a role model for girls, but I find it just as important that my young son thinks she's awesome and pretends to be her when he plays soccer.

This book, similar to the others in the series, provides a brief bio with engaging illustrations. Her story is well-rounded and celebrates many aspects: family life, bravery, athleticism, work ethic, and advocating for others. It's beautiful.

Beyond my love for the subject matter, I think the execution of this narrative is excellent for this LPBD series! One of my favorites.

Review to be added to Amazon UK and US on 2nd February 2021 - publication day!

I really love the books in this series and this book on Megan Rapinoe, one of the most famous footballers currently playing in the game, is a great addition to the series!

I loved how the book focuses on Megan's sexuality to a degree and shows that she did not let that get in her way, she was a brilliant player because of it as she embraced who she was and was determined to succeed - it is a really positive story.

The book has some lovely images and it was well written and easy to follow - it is 4 stars from me for this one, it is another great addition to this seres - highly recommended!

I'll be completely honest and say as someone based in the UK I knew very little about Megan Rapinoe before reading this book with my daughter. As with many of the books in this series, it's a colourful and beautifully illustrated book charting Megan's life so far both on and off the field. It gently discusses sexuality and gender equality which promoted a chat about these subjects with my young daughter. The great thing about these books is that they can serve as an introduction to the subject for a younger audience and be truly inspiring to slightly older children on the cusp of teenage years.

The Little People, Big Dreams biography of Megan Rapinoe, written by Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara, and illustrated by Paulina Morgan, tells the story of Rapinoe so far, from her childhood growing up in Redding, California, to her lifting of the World Cup trophy.

The book is short and cute, if a little generic. It is a lovely introduction to someone I have long admired, and thankfully does not shy away from Rapinoe's sexuality, handling this topic identically to her soccer playing and activism, and every other element of her life.

A great addition to any soccer kid's bookshelf.
