It’s my own silly fault for getting my authors mixed up 😖. When I saw this on Kindle Unlimited I was thinking - hmm, I didn’t know he wrote psychological thrillers as well. Of course I was thinking of Daniel Cole and it didn’t help that the book I was thinking of featured Fawkes and Baxter. So my mind added Daniel Cole and Fawkes & Baxter and got Cole Baxter. It pays to check!

So this was not a great book. It was slow and quite formulaic and predictable. I saw the big twist as soon as Helena arrived. Helena is the perfect nanny of the title. If you want a plot summary, read the blurb. It sounds good. But the dialogue was quite wooden, the mother (Cynthia) was predictably always in a flap and starting to doubt her sanity (sigh, not this again). The husband (Michael) didn’t really believe his wife until the evidence was overwhelming and they both overlooked so many red flags with this nanny. Any normal person would have run a mile. There were also some editorial errors and, early on, a time line that just didn’t work. There’s not much else I can even say. I really did not enjoy reading it.

Badly written

Who edited this book? The first few pages had me reeling from the time line inconsistencies. The couple had been married ten years but the daughter was born early in the marriage and she was only 2 yrs when the story opens. Was the opening all a flashback? Completely unclear. Grammar is terrible. Language is unimaginative. Characters unrealistic. Dialog unbelievable.

It’s ⭐️🌟🌟 if you have a sense of humor !

Spoiler Alert!
I didn’t find this book suspenseful at all. With some reach you might call it domestic noir. I am thrilled to read new authors and this was my first by Cole Baxter.
I found the book formulaic at best..
Overwhelmed wife Cynthia and her wealthy husband Michael hire a Nanny, also referred to as the hot nanny from the beginning. Their son was born using a surrogate after Cynthias near death giving birth to their daughter, Anna. Unfortunately their son Grant, develops childhood schizophrenia & the overwhelmed parents start hunting for a nanny. Michael who has had problems keeping it in his pants in the past, can’t conceal his lust for the Nanny.
Within a month the nanny and her twi sons move into the basement apartment and soon after Cynthia starts (or appears) losing her grasp on reality.
The Nanny befriends Michael, tries to isolate Anna and has Michael and even her children questioning Cynthia’s state of mind.
Etc. Etc..
A few laughs with a plot that was as predictable as it was awful (at least in an amusing way). The author deserves an A for effort but should hire an editor that isn’t afraid to edit and Beta Readers to tell him that he had too many plots going and they aren’t cohesive or suspenseful.
In all honesty I have a great deal of respect for anyone who writes publishes a novel. Better plot lines, backstory and setting are essential. This one was a miss but I’ll try one more.

Determination....

....got me to the end. In the first 50 pages, how often did we need to be reminded Michael made a lot of money? That Michael and Cynthia were millionaires? That Michael ran a multimillion dollar business? TOO many times. What boss confides in his employees that he is lusting after the "hot nanny"? Why would a mother who doesn't work need TWO drivers to take her kids to school? She couldn't at least take one, even switch off from one week to the next?

Michael was a horny jerk. Cynthia had no self-esteem; you'd never think she had been a confident, competent nurse.

Overall not horrible, but certainly not great.

The Perfect Nanny

I felt like I was reading a book written by a child. Everything about this book was bad. The author left nothing to the reader’s imagination at all. Every little detail was included as if the reader couldn’t put two and two together and wouldn’t be able to figure things out on her own. Do not waste your time reading this book it is awful and a child could predict the entire book. To make matters worse the scenarios were so unrealistic that even if you wanted to sway the reader into believing it the predictability of the story line ruins it completely. I’m an avid reader and I read a lot of books from many different genres every month and I must say this is the first time I left a bad review and the reason being is because the book is that bad!

I dont know, thats about all I can say is I have no idea what the fuck this author was thinking when he wrote this book, it was so predictable, like no joke I guessed the ending by the end of the first chapter. There was literally no surprise or twist or anything to this book, just 500 hundred pages of pure and utter bull. And lets not forget the ending, where do I even begin, so I get the whole way to the end of the book and think thank the lord its finished, only to be left with more questions then I had at the start of the book, like what happened to baby Olive???, what happened to Helena's husband??? So yeah I didnt like it all that much and would certainly not recommend it.

I don't normally write reviews... However... The fact that I stayed awake for about a half an hour last night just thinking about how remarkably bad this book was, motivated me to write this review. So, here we go.

I mean, like someone else said.. the mere accomplishment of writing a whole novel.. it's something to be proud of I suppose. It's not something I think I could ever sit down and do; certainly not something I could ever do WELL. Having said that; you would think that a published novel such as this one would... be something of decent quality.

The first thing I noticed was that the dialogue was incredibly simple, unimaginative, and stiff. The characters therefore were not too well developed, although we were reminded many times that a) they were rich, b) the wife had low self esteem and c) the husband had a wandering eye. We are also reminded several times that the husband has cheated, but curiously we never find out for sure with whom.

The STORY... I found the premise to be very interesting, and truly I did get into it, somewhat, for the first 60-70 percent of the book. After that, things started getting disjointed. Lots of unanswered questions. Sometimes, in a better novel, it's good to leave some things unanswered... But this was not a great book and too many questions went unanswered, like the author forgot? The biggest one is WHY Helena went to so much trouble to snag Michael. It doesn't make sense. There's too much story still missing. I think the author was trying to come up with something more imaginative than, poor woman with kids applies for nanny position with rich family, then tries to steal the husband. But that would have made more SENSE. There are pieces of the story missing. Also, again, who did Michael cheat with? What happened to Amanda (I suppose we can assume that Helena killed her)?

I'm also bothered by the mental illness story, specifically the childhood schizophrenia story. I don't think the author did quite enough research; Grant is really WAY more lucid, sweet and well behaved than a child who truly has this disease would be. A pill does not magically make symptoms go away. Helena was able to completely hide the fact that Terrance had the disease? Uh, no. Would not happen.

All in all, just BAD. I gave two stars only because I was actually into the story for a good chunk of the book, and then it just fell apart.

I was initially quite prepared to give this 5 stars as it was well written, and page turner. They were hiring a nanny to help with their young son who had childhood schizophrenia. He was born by a surrogate with what they believe are eggs/sperm from the parents. They decide to hire Amanda who fits all the criteria. She disappears and cannot be traced. Olive the surrogate after giving birth disappears, presumed dead after a month. Helena comes on the scene, she seems the perfect nanny. One thing that really irritated me, and was a clear red flag : The parents never checked her references, or indeed anything about her. They took her on living in their home with her twin sons because, 'She seemed nice and knew what she was doing'. I can still never understand how some parents in real life let their children be looked after by any person because they seem 'nice'. There are thousands of abusers out there parents. Please think about your children. Some crazy things happen, but it is put down to one thing, or another until nanny tries killing Mum by poisoning her. It was at this point in the book that it took on an almost comical tale (Was it a comedy, not a psychological thriller). I actually laughed out loud because, some of the things written were funny (They were not meant to be but came across like that). I read the book until the ending I had lost interest at this stage, as it was making me smile I carried on until the unbelievable ending. Hence my 3 stars. 2 of the stars are for giving me a good laugh. Who actually writes these books, and finds a printer willing to print it????

Whilst it was an ok read I could see what was coming and some of the grammatical errors really pissed me off. If you’re going to write a book and edit it at least do it properly. It’s put me off reading any more by this author. There was too much “babe” “baby” etc for me. Maybe as I’m British it was too Americanised for me. I can usually overlook stuff like this but it really annoyed me. It was just too much. Not my thing.

Did a 12 year old write this? I got through the first few pages and wanted to bang my head against a wall. I did read to about 25% and then skimmed to the end of the book to find out what I already knew. The characters are shallow, the dialogue between the characters are absolutely horrid and I just could not bring myself to finish this book. Would not recommend. At all.

Ignoring the spelling/grammar.

There are tons of obvious clues pointing you towards what happened/what will happen. I continued reading somewhat hoping to be surprised, but nope. No twists or turns, no red herring - it's exactly what you think.

I’m sorry. Terrible book. Most of the way through, I just kept saying “who talks like this?”. It was poorly written, poorly edited and completely predictable. I didn’t like any of the characters. And like, we get it, you’re rich! Geez

Someone send an editor

The Perfect Nanny by Cole Baxter has great potential- but honestly where the hell was an editor or proofreader?
The writing is cringeworthy and incredibly redundant-

Example: “I couldn’t believe that Helena would say something like that unless there was really something that I didn’t know about Helena. I didn’t think she would say that, but I was sure there was some things about her that I didn’t know.”

This type of repeat happens so often in this book I wanted to DNF it early on, however the meat and potatoes of the story is intriguing, if not terribly predictable.

The fact that I enjoyed Michael and Cynthia as much as I did, was this books only saving grace. And my need to see how long it took them to figure out the obvious is what kept me reading.

I think with a good proofreading & strong editor this story could easily be a 4 star book. But as it sits now, it’s getting a generous 2 stars.

Don't waste your time

I can't believe I read through to the end, although I skimmed much of it. The husband and wife were juvenile and simplistic with their decisions, which constantly strained credulity. The story, as implausible as it was, could have been told in less than half of the 540 pages. Laborious, stilted dialog comprised most of the book. Developments were farfetched, unbelievable and predictable. Much of the plot and dialog reminded me of a very bad B-movie. I gave this author a chance but ended up wasting my time.

This has to have been one of the worst books I’ve ever read. The dialogue is like it was written by an 11-year-old boy who couldn’t keep his thoughts beyond what’s in his pants. If you like a good mystery and suspense, then look elsewhere… This book was just dumb.
Also, it was filled with grammatical errors in the blurb at the beginning of the book was completely inaccurate!

The Perfect Nanny by Cole Baxter is a psychological thriller about a seemingly perfect hire who becomes the ultimate nightmare. The story follows the lives of a couple, Cynthia and Michael, who, overwhelmed by the challenges of parenthood and busy careers, decide to hire a nanny to help with their young son Grant. Enter Helena, a charming and highly qualified woman who seems to be the ideal solution to their problems.

Initially, Helena integrates seamlessly into their lives, taking care of their child and helping maintain order in their home. However, cracks soon begin to show as Helena behavior becomes increasingly erratic and manipulative. The couple starts to question her true intentions and fears that her presence might put their child in danger.

As secrets unravel, Cynthia and Michael discover chilling truths about Helenas past and motivations, leading to a tense, edge-of-your-seat climax where trust is shattered, and survival becomes paramount. The novel explores themes of deception, vulnerability, and the lengths people will go to protect their loved ones.

This gripping book keeps readers guessing until the very end, with twists that make it hard to put down.

A good thrilling read

Cynthia & Michael wanted to expand their family but Cynthia was unable to carry another child. So they found a surrogate to help them and they were able to have a beautiful boy. But their son is ill and they are looking for answers as to why. They decide to get a nanny as Cynthia is finding it hard to manage their two children. Everything seems normal in the beginning the nanny Helena is perfect but strange things start happening and no one believes Cynthia. Michael knows that he can't act on his feelings for the nanny as he will lose his family but can he really believe that his wife never took an overdose? Will they find out the truth about their nanny & her past?
I feel for Cynthia as all she wants is to be a good mother & wife. She tries so hard to keep her family together. Michael seems like a weak man that seems to want to cheat on her. He never learns from his past mistake.
A good thrilling read.

I enjoyed this book andit was an easy read. You get some background at the start which was really helpful and quickly get into the main story. Micheal and Cynthia, come across as caring parents, who are trying to do the best they can for thier children. Money is no issue, so hiring a nanny primarily to assist with their youngest child Grant who has childhood schizophrenia seems to be a good idea. When Helena comes along, she seems to be the answer to the problem. It's clear right from the outset to readers that Helena is not who she appears to be. What follows is a well orchastrated set of events, of which each one in isolation might seem trivial, but together add up to a sinister picture. It's not until these events get more serious that the pieces start falling into place. Have to admit that I did see the ending coming but that in no way detracted from a well written book.

This is my first time reading something by this author. The summary of the book definitely caught my attention and I was intrigued. This is a wonderfully written psychological thriller that kept me on the edge of my seat pretty much throughout the whole book - a definite page-turner for sure! There were many great plot twists throughout that I was anxiously turning the pages to see what would happen next. Towards the end, I could see where the story was headed, but that in no way took away from the suspense of the story. Great characters, well-developed, that really pull you in to the story. This was a really great read and I will definitely try something from this author again.

Review of The Perfect Nanny by Cole Baxter

To me personally, this book was mediocre at best . Unfortunately, I figured out way too soon what was happening with the main character, which tended to take seat from the thrill. The premise of the plot was believable, and well put together, but perhaps, I have read far too many thrillers. I don't enjoy writing anything less than stellar reviews, but felt that Cole Baxter might use some constructive criticism. There was a part near the end where there was part of the dialog that was stated as spoken by Cynthia, when clearly, it was a quote from her husband. The proofreaders should have caught that for the author. All in all, it was an enjoyable book, but a bit too predictable for me!

Cole Baxter has done it again. I've read every book pf his and each one keeps me guessing till the end. You can figure out part of the mystery, but there is always a "Baxter Twist". Michael and Cynthia are a wealthy couple who had a child through a surrogate that has special needs. Cynthia needs help to take care of not only their son Grant, but their daughter Anna. They hire Helena who seems like a god send, but turns into their nightmare. The author weaves a suspenseful, twisty tale that is a page turner from start to finish. Well paced, great characters, this is the perfect "edge of your seat" read.
I received an ARC and this is my honest review.

I had to stop after about 40% the characters were whiney and unlikeable. The plot was actually ridiculous, rich peaple who don't hire a nanny until the kid is 7, because wife couldn't handle it, I mean come on, you hire a nanny when he is still a baby and keeping you up all the time, not after he has started school, special needs child. And what kind of live in nanny brings her own children along. Noy very realistic. The husband and wife did nothing but complain and whine about everything. Wife oh I can't trust him around the beautiful nanny. Well, I simply did not find the book readable, so I only read about 40% and then I jumped to the end and it was what I expected, very predictable.

Oh. My. God. What an absolutely amazing book! Cole Baxter has delivered a shockingly terrifying book that literally grabs you by the throat and has you gasping for breath! The book has an “in your face” storyline; characters that are frightening yet crazy; plot twists and turns that will keep you up at night; and a true shocker of an ending. This book is just plain scary...you really need to grab a copy for yourself. (I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book and was literally scared out of my head. It’s really good!!) ❤️❤️

This book was so poorly written. The internal and external dialogue was so simplistic and unnatural; it actually seemed to be written by a child. The main characters were so unbelievable and frankly, quite stupid. And then there are the massive plot holes, abundant typos and other editing errors, generously sprinkled over a weak and predictable story. The only positive I took from this book is this: if this guy got this book (and lots of others that I won’t be reading) published, I am good enough to finish and publish the book I’ve been working on!
