Meet Cute Romance #7

Once Upon A Rescue

Rate this book
As director of the local animal shelter, Brooke Redding is used to being the one doing the rescuing. But when a freak winter storm endangers her animals with sub-freezing temperatures and enough snow to constitute a Mississippi blizzard, she’s in the market for a miracle.

Hayden Garrow wants nothing more than to be her hero. With four-wheel drive, an empty barn, and a crush on Brooke that goes back to junior high, he’s got a plan to save all her furry charges. They’ve just got to survive icy roads, canine labor, and a pair of matchmaking octogenarians to get there.

What’s the worst that could happen in this snowbound Southern romance?

This story is a crossover with the Wishful series.

"Meet cute" is a term used to describe a situation in which a future romantic couple meets for the first time. Meet Cute Romance is a series of romantic shorts celebrating the possibilities of that first meeting.

Short and sweet, there really wasn’t any time for anything to go wrong between this couple (novellas are like that, for better or worse!).. And I thoroughly enjoyed that! I get that angst and drama is what makes the romance genre “exciting” but sometimes it’s nice read a story about a couple who gets to know each other, falls for each other, and gets to happy ever after without things going sideways a couple times.

Romance and Puppies
I love the premise of a “meet cute” - something that can fill in over a lunch hour or a wait at the doctor’s office - and one that offers adorable animals is a huge plus! And set in Wishful is just an added bonus. The fact that the hero has had a longtime crush and seemed to need the weather “assist” to get to his HEA, just makes it that much better in my eyes. A story full of smiles!

I'm a big fan of small town reads, add in some familiarity with the town due to other reads by the author and I'm sold. Kait Nolan gives all kinds of great in this meet cute, that technically isn't a meet cute - it's more of a the start of something lovely. It's short, sweet and lovely with a dash of cute animals and Christmas theme. Vet technicians ftw!

I love all things Wishful, so when we’re caught waiting for the next novel to come out, I adore having these little nuggets of perfection to tide us over. Hayden is a hero looking for a place to happen and he’s chosen Brooke, source of his childhood crush. This quick little read is a perfect example of the Wishful fountain at work, providing a miracle just when one is needed most. I can’t wait to see this pair get a full length story of their own because they’re just the cutest, most precious thing together.

These meet cute romances are usually sort of like favorite snack. Quick, tasty and satisfying, but they aren’t a replacement for dinner. I tend to love these as a super quick pick me up on a break at work, or to lift my mood quickly on a stressful day. Depending on how fast you read, these are usually 15-30 minute reads, and they’re NOT intended to be novels or even novellas. They’re essentially short stories with a romantic element in them—usually truly a “meet-cute” like in the movies...the first time a couple meet and make a connection and you just know that there’s going to be a story there...and sometimes the story is something you can go on to read in a full length novel and sometimes, its left up to your imagination. But like I said they are usually quick little snapshots or snippets. This one is different—it’s a more complete full story. It’s still a short story and a very quick read (fell perfectly into my lunch break, thank you Kait Nolan!) but we have not just a beginning or a tease—we have a beginning, a middle and an ending. Sure, this isn’t as meaty and full of deep content as Nolan’s full length novels—and she does tend to spoil us with riches in her full length novels—but there, she’s got the luxury of time and length. For a short story, this one hit every note for me! I really liked both these main characters a lot—and I think the storm was an excellent device to get them alone together—they knew each other already, and he’s been harboring a crush, so it wasn’t a big stretch to see the romance blossom. No love scenes, there’s not enough time, haha, but we got some kissing and I felt the chemistry and didn’t mourn too much not reading about what might have been happening offscreen during the last few pages. I always enjoy Kait Nolan’s work, her stories are warm and cozy and romantic, and this one is no exception—it’s really amazing to me what she accomplished in a little more than 100 pages! I keep these meet-cutes in their own folder on my kindle so I can quickly find them when I need a quick “hit” of romance and can’t afford to get in trouble with my “just one more page” tendencies...and this one just moved to the top of my list as my favorite. Highly recommend!

The Rescue Was Heart Warming And Adorable

This Wishful, Mississippi based short novella, Once Upon A Rescue in the Meet Cute Romance Series by Kait Nolan, was overflowing with sweetness, kindness and cute animals!

Animal Rescue and Shelter Administrator, Brooke Redding, is dedicated to her cause. She is willing to do anything from reminding people of favours they owe, guilt tripping and even bribing to find a forever home for these abandoned animals. However, an incoming snow storm might force her hand into making some difficult choices. Maybe a gentleman in shining armour could come to her aid?

Volunteer Firefighter, Farm and Feed Supply Employee and Overall Nice Guy, Hayden Garrow has a very easy going and helpful personality. By no means is he a flake, he would be found in the dictionary near the word 'reliable'. However, his shyness and obliging nature makes him invisible to others. Although, a fast approaching winter storm might give him the opportunity to make his mark with a certain someone in his humble way.

I know I definitely have cavities after reading this story! Both protagonists are hesitant about their feelings due to past experiences but they are extremely caring. It was lovely and warm to read about the animals who were caught in the cold. There was so much detail involved regarding the setting and situation, that it felt like the reader was present during the entire ordeal. Of course, despite the warnings by the authoress, Kait Nolan, it felt too quick and short.

Compared to the other books in the Meet Cute Romance Series, this one seemed very close to the writer's heart. I hope for the readers, that these characters make an appearance in the Wishful Romance Series tales, it would be an absolute bonus.

If you are looking for a clean romance with a lot of feels, the most endearing pets that again tug at your heartstrings and lessons of generosity and selflessness, you have found your next read!

Awwwww! This story is adorable. How can you not love a fine, caring man, who loves puppies, and kittens, and, apparently, all other living creatures. Especially Brooke, the director of the Wishful animal shelter. Hayden comes to the critters rescue in the face of a huge, for Mississippi, snow storm. I’ll be honest. I’m a northerner. A few inches of snow is no big thing to me, but I have friends who live in the south. I never believed them about how a few flakes of fluffy white could shut down everything. Then, a couple of years ago, I was in North Carolina, and witnessed how eight inches of snow did just that. We were in a hotel. We figured we’d clean off the car and go to a movie, get some food. Ha! Not possible. The theater, the mall, the restaurants, they were all closed. We drove around, and drove around, and found nothing open. How is that a thing? In Once Upon a Rescue, it’s made clear. No one knows how to drive in snow and ice. Everyone goes a little nutty as they attempt to grab food and fuel from the stores. Then, everyone hunkers down for the duration, hoping that the power doesn’t go out.

It was fun to watch Brooke and Hayden work together to save the animals. It was also steamy watching them get to know each other. This getting to know each other is, relatively, clean, mostly just a couple of kisses, but it definitely exudes heat. My favorite scene was the one where they played in the snow.

This is a novelette, a long short story. It whets the appetite with the romance beginning between Hayden and Brooke, but doesn’t show you the whole of the relationship. Perhaps that will come later. For what it is, it was a lovely read.

My thanks to the author who provided me with a free ARC of this story. Her generosity is appreciated, but it had no influence on the opinions expressed in this review. Those show my honest reactions to reading this book.

I found myself cracking up about the opening scenes of this story depicting snow in the South - how people can't drive, school closings amidst a minor sprinkling of flurries, the thought of putting snow in a jar for show-n-tell, the inevitable grocery store chaos fighting over bread and milk as if the sustainer of all life, and could also so relate to the struggles parents face with homework & the hair-pulling challenge of having to learn "new math" vs. good old-fashioned long division. It was as if the author was in my hometown!!! I so loved the analogy about driving Grandma to church (won't explain so as to not be a spoiler but sooo cute!). Kait Nolan consistently captures the special nature of small town Southern living while bringing to life the very people that make small towns the special places that they are. In Once Upon a Rescue, Brooke has sworn off men having committed to a "man diet" and instead pours her heart and soul into finding homes for rescue animals at her shelter. Things heat up in more ways than one when Hayden comes to the rescue to offer the use of his barn since the shelter isn't properly insulated amidst this severe winter storm and the animals might otherwise die. Kait allows things to slowly percolate between Brooke and Hayden who has had a long-standing crush on Brooke dating back to their days in school together while leaving you wanting for more but in the best way. As always, Kait delivers the best of romance, this time in the midst of some cuddly, playful friends who are sure to touch your heart as well! I now want a puppy-wuppy and can't wait for Kait's next book!

This is a sweet little novella that will warm your heart with its cute animals as well as the town of Wishful. I have been provided with an ARC copy of Once Upon A Rescue: A Wishful Meet Cute Romance for an honest and impartial review. This is book eight in the “Meet Cute Romance series” to which it is also a part of the “Wishful Romance series”, so if you have been following my review on my blog you with know I am a lover of all things Wishful and Kait Nolan.
Brooke Redding is in a desperate need of the Wishful magic wishing well when as a freak winter snow storm is about to hit the town and cause havoc at the animal rescue shelter she runs. She has called in all the favours and is running out of time to protect the animals from the cold and freezing weather on its way. She needs a hero or a miracle either will do anything to rescue the animals from the snow.
Hayden Garrow is a volunteer firefighter how works at the local feed store how has moved back to Wishful to take over his Grandparents farm. He first met Brooke in junior high and since returning to town he has helped out at the animal shelter, with the storm approaching he seeks to be her hero and delivers some dog food before the storm snows everyone in.
Brooke may get her wish in the form of Hayden his 4wd and his grandparent's empty barn, but she might just get a bit more than she needed.
A small town winter romance with but puppies, dog, cat and cute fireman what more do you need.

Once Upon a Rescue is a wonderful meet cute romance set in the southern town of Wishful, Mississippi. As always, Kait Nolan does a great job of using enough descriptive language to allow the reader to truly visualize the eclectic town of Wishful. She included many of the much loved characters from the Wishful series and of course the center and heart of the town, the fountain, and its seemingly magical power.
In this feel good novelette, Brooke is trying to find temporary homes for the animals in the shelter that she runs. Now, more than ever, she needs to house the animals because a rare snowstorm is heading for Mississippi and the shelter is primarily an outdoor space - one without protection from the storm.
Hayden, a volunteer firefighter who has had a crush on Brooke sine middle school, continually shows Brooke his thoughtfulness and helpfulness. He has a plan to save the animals from the impending snow storm that may also work to finally show her his true feelings for her.
This was a quick read and one that just made me feel good. I caught myself smiling on more than one occasion - a sign that I really enjoyed this book. Kait does not disappoint!

This was a very sweet, clean read from Kait Nolan that tells the story of Brooke and Hayden. Hayden is just gorgeous and, other than being a bit shy, the kind of guy most women dream of! Brooke is lovely - determined and so passionate about keeping her animals safe - and she really does deserve a guy like Hayden. An inconvenient snow storm allows for these two to realise that there is definitely something between them and it leads to the HFN. While definitely a standalone, this is a long short story and so, while there is definite character development and an intense connection between the 2 MC, their story ends quite quickly. Other than a selfish need on my part to have the book end, this does not any way detract from Brooke and Hayden's story at all. If you're looking for a quick but sweet read for when time is short, then this is definitely the book for you.
As always, Kait Nolan delivers a beautiful romance with characters you can't help but love and root for! I would definitely recommend this book, actually any book by Kait, and I look forward to her next release.

I just love, love, love heading back to Wishful and getting to be a part of the lives of the residents as they find their great loves. This return trip just so happened to be one of my favorites because it included an animal shelter. How can you not enjoy reading about 2 people falling in love while surrounded by animals.

Hayden and Brooke both liked each other. Yet, things in their lives held them back from communicating this to each other. It takes a winter storm breaking out to crack the door for these 2. When Hayden goes the extra mile to help the animals, and Brooke, things begin to come out in the open.

I got lost in this book. The only problem that I had with it was that it ended. No, not how it ended. The fact that it ended at all. I wanted to keep reading about Brooke and Hayden's great love. I wanted to know what happened to the dogs. I wanted to hear about those storm puppies growing up. I'm sure they'll show up in more of the future Wishful books. I just hated having to leave them for now.

I received an ARC of this book. I chose to leave my review in support of both the book and the author who wrote it. Opinions expressed are my own.

Once Upon a Rescue is the latest Wishful Meet-Cute romance, a novelette that’s all about the magic of the beginning of a romance! Brooke is the director of the Wishful animal shelter, but with a huge winter storm coming, she needs a miracle to keep all of her animals safe and warm. After making a wish, will Hayden be the one to fulfill their dreams, or will the storm dash all of their hope?

This little story just gave me this warm and cozy feeling inside that I just loved! Brooke and Hayden were so cute together, plus adding in firefighters and brand new puppies, you can’t help but to fall in love with these two! Brooke has this ban on men and has been so busy with taking care of the animals that she doesn’t notice Hayden’s attention. Hayden is such a genuinely good and nice guy, and I love the lengths he goes to help out Brooke and her animals! These Meet-Cute romances are a great way to introduce one to Ms. Nolan’s writing, to the magic of Wishful, and to the beauty and possibilities of a new relationship!

With winter coming rather quickly along with the holidays and all the stress that tends to come with them, you will enjoy snuggling up with "Once Upon A Rescue" and seeing there are many happy endings, all are safe and sound, and Hayden and Brooke are on their way to building a happy life together.

As an ARC reader, this is my honest opinion. Ms. Nolan is an amazing writer who draws you in and makes you part of her stories. This takes seriously good writing ability. Whether you are visiting Wishful or any of the other places she writes about, you won't leave without feeling the joy, the sorrow, the community spirit, and pleasure of seeing love unfold. This "Meet Cute" isn't lacking anything especially since it isn't a full novel. Too often short stories fall short. Not enough time to build characters, let alone build between them. You won't find that here. Enjoy this five-star story!

Brooke and Hayden have a mutual attraction to each other; what Brooke doesn't know is that he has liked her since junior high school.
A big snowstorm is barrelling down on their town, and Brooke needs help, see she runs a animal rescue shelter, and the outdoor pens won't be warm enough. As if a gift from above, Hayden appears with the food she needs for the animals - but suggests for warmth they move the animals to his farm - he gets a big trailer, they load the animals and head out. On the way they help some old ladies (the casserole brigade - that's a whole 'nother story) out of a ditch.
Time goes on, the storm hits - they really enjoy themselves. He's a nice guy, and she is a kind and giving girl - they're perfect for each other.
Hayden finally comes clean with his affection for afar - and she agrees that she might feel the same way - needless to say they begin a relationship.
More stuff happens in the book - should I mention 'hot firefighter calendar'...…...

Rcvd an advanced reader copy from the author for giving my two cents. I love kait's books and this one was super sweet. We meet brooke, a caring woman who loves animals and it's a blizzard out there and shes trying to find rescue homes for the dogs in the cold weather. We meet Hayden, all around jack-of-all-trades and all around nice guy who is a volunteer firefighter
He has had a crush in brooke since junior high but his family moved before he could ask her out. Hayden delivers the unused animal food to the shelter and sees a frantic brooke trying to help her animals. He opens up his barn for them and brooke is beside herself with happiness that she hugs him. Brooke I seeing Hayden in a whole new light. Will being in close quarters bring these two together? Will Hayden tell her his feelings for her ?

Once upon A Rescue is a short story evolving around a love story that begins in the desperate throes of a snowstorm and two people needing one another for two different reasons, yet come to gather to find they are not that far apart. This short story gives one a glimpse into the charming town of Wishful. After reading this cute novella, if it is your first, it will not be your last read!
Kait Nolan has put her heart into yet another story, about the heart and why, what and how two people look at each other. Learn from each other, and find out how to live with each other. The heart is always at core of Ms. Nolan’s stories and Once Upon A Rescue shows once again, how the heart wins. If you care for animals and love in the air, read this short story. Gives you faith in humanity!

Amelia runs the animal rescue facility that needs lots of work. Hayden works in the feed and farm store and has a farm with a barn. He is also a volunteer fire fighter. And volunteers at the rescue facility. They live in Wishful where the winters are usually mild. Except this year there is a record snowfall coming.
Having lived in the south with such winter weather, I know how much fun rain, covered with sleet, and then snow followed by more sleet can be, especially when driving.
If you like puppies, dogs and cats. IF you like firemen. If you like saving cute animals. If you like watching a couple investigate their feelings for each other while caring for the animals in a big barn. This is the book for you!!!

I love the Meet Cute series, where we get a glimpse of new characters and the wonderful tale of their first meeting.

It isn’t a full novel, with all the in depth interactions, other characters and the HEA tied up in a bow... you get the initial meeting, the first sparks of romance and the joyous hopeful future for this budding romance.

The characters are wonderful and whilst I would happily read a full novel on these beautiful people... this was fun, romantic and inspiring, just as it was written!

Thanks Kait for another great couple!! x

Once Upon a Rescue is book 8 in the Wishful Meet Cute romance by Kait Nolan. Love seeing old friends from the town of Wishful and finding new friends too!

When an unusual winter snow storm blows into Wishful, Mississippi, Brooke needs to find temporary homes for the rescue animals in the shelter she runs but isn’t having much luck. Until Hayden comes to the rescue...he has a crush on Brooke and will do what needs to be done to help the rescue shelter and get closer “hopefully” to Brooke.

Rescue animals, newborn puppies, a big barn, being stranded are just a few of the things happening in this short, sweet read!

Having returned to Wishful after many years away, Hayden a volunteer at the animal rescue shelter realizes that his grandparents old barn will make a perfect place to hold the remaining dogs from the shelter in the threatening winter storm. Unbeknownst to Hayden, Brooke who runs the animal shelter makes a wish at the infamous well in Wishful where hope springs eternal to find a way to take care of all the dogs that have not found foster homes in the upcoming storm. While Hayden has always known who Brooke was and is, Brooke sees him as just one of the volunteers until the dreaded and powerful ice and snow storm begins. Learning about each other and taking a chance is all what the storm is about.

If you are looking for a cute, sweet romance to read on a leisurely afternoon , this is the one for you.
Hayden Garrow has had a crush on Brooke Redding since middle school.
When Brooke, Wishful’s animal shelter director, is in a bind when a snowstorm hits town, Hayden comes to her rescue by offering his barn for the dogs, as well as heaters for those left behind and shelter for her and her dog.
It was cute watching them “discover” each other.
As a holiday story , this one will leave you with a smile on your faces.

Brooke Redding and Hayden Garrow it’s times for these two to have their happily ever after. Hayden liked Brooke in high school but she really didn’t know him. He helps her with walking dogs for her shelter. Brooke is on a man break and is focused on her animal rescue. A snowstorm hits Mississippi and she has no where to bring the animals.

Hayden being the perfect Southern gentleman agrees to house all the dogs temporarily until the storm is over and Brooke starts to really see Hayden and she starts to fall for him in the midst of the storm.

This story is short and sweet. When things were getting good the book ended. I hope to see more of Brooke and Hayden in future books.

When the sleet/snow storm hits Wishful, Mississippi folks don't know how to cope. Between the run on the grocery store and the need to make sure the rescue animals at the local shelter are safe for the duration of the storm, Brooke is struggling to find foster homes for the animals who are sheltered in an open uninsulated area. Enter Hayden, volunteer for the shelter, volunteer firefighter, and all around resourceful man. Soon, a plan is in place, the Casserole Patrol rescued, and love begins to bloom.

This novelette has a funny start with the panic in the grocery store when 3 inches of snow is expected. With the cold and icy conditions, Brooke's animal shelter will no longer be safe to shelter the dogs. Hayden fell for Brooke when he was in junior high. Now Hayden has a chance to come to Brooke's rescue. I received a free copy of this book from the author through Booksprout. This is my honest and voluntarily given review. This is a sweet romance and a quick enjoyable read. Living in the South, I can relate to the grocery scene. This is a light amusing story, which I recommend.

I love all things Kait Nolan and was lucky enough to join her ARC team and get this one before release. This is a cute and sweet story about two people who kind of knew each other and have reconnected during a freak snow storm in Mississippi. (I live in the South and understand completely! Southerns that don't drive often have no idea how to handle it!) Snow, rescue dogs, and the beginnings of love all make this a great story. It can be read as a stand alone. However, I highly recommend anything in the Wishful universe, especially if you enjoy small town stories.
