It's been quite awhile since I last visited this series, but I was cleaning my room, and in one of my to-read piles, I discovered I'd picked up volume five at some point. I wasn't sure how easy it would be to hop back in after so long, but a bit of violent fantasy sounded good. And while I'd forgotten a few of the plot points, Orcbolg's adventures were still accessible--that's indicative of a simplistic plot, but I still contend that the characters are more likable and fully realized than anyone with the placeholder name of "Priestess" or "Elf" has a right to be. Seeing them get put in an actual life-threatening situation didn't lose any of its dramatic impact, despite the time that's passed.
That said, they don't really cover a lot of ground in this volume, when all's said and done. After the big fight, there's a lot of regrouping, and flat-out relief from the characters at still being alive. Even so, it isn't long before they're back in the action, and we get to see that the goblins are in league with some heavier hitters than it seemed. There's some creative strategizing and a decent cliffhanger toward the end, and it really made me miss my old D&D campaign--my players in that came up with some pretty inventive solutions to their predicaments, too.
Anyway, this is a solid volume with some good action, team building, and a bit of progress in the overall plot. I have a feeling volume six will push most of those elements even further, given the way this one ends.
