Re-reading the most recent arc of Blue Exorcist in preparation for it coming off of hiatus next month. It's almost been a year since the series went on break. It feels good going back over this amazing arc knowing I'm finally gonna be able to continue it. 😭
Finally we are getting to the crux of the problems between Rin and Yukio but these boys are terrible at talking to each other. Now that they have realized that they can't kill each other maybe they can let their real feelings show. I was heartbroken by Rin's face when he found out Yukio had attempted suicide. Poor boy. I am also wondering what Shiemi will be like when she gets back from her training. Still so much exciting so many explosions.
trigger warnings for possession and talk of attempted suicide and suicidal ideation, sibling violence.
Aboard the Illuminati airship, Rin and Yukio face one another, while Satan is out of control and baiting them both. Sir Pheles has slipped a hapless Miwa onto the same ship in order to give something to Rin, and he is freaking out when he runs into Shima. Prior to Rin’s arrival, Yukio was prepared to take out his own eye… the one Satan is peeping through. Rin immediately tries to persuade Yukio not to join the Illuminati, telling him what a bad idea that is.
Miwa and Shima come upon the two brothers as they face off, hiding and biding their time while they bear witness to their conflict. Rin is determined to bring his brother back to the fold, alive, while Yukio wants Rin to kill him and put him out of his misery and out of Satan’s control. Meanwhile, an announcement comes over the ship’s intercom system informing everyone to prepare for Serafim pulse in five minutes. Shima explains that it’s a blast from the ship’s power source, but they should be safe where they are… hopefully.
As Rin and Yukio go toe to toe, Rin is waging his own internal war with his other side, and it’s anyone’s guess how this will turn out.
This volume is largely the wildly fluctuating battle between the two brothers. Even as they fight, I think each is learning a new appreciation for the other. Rin has always looked upon Yukio as the weaker younger brother but he’s finding out otherwise. And Yukio is gaining a new understanding of Rin’s strength. In the meantime, we have an over the top Satan. Without Yuri to keep him in check, Satan is a nasty piece of work. She was what kept him even remotely human. Will he destroy everything, or can he be overcome?
And just where is Sir Pheles hiding?
Another great volume, looking forward to more. Although to be honest, I’d like to see the plot move forward at a slightly faster pace, and I wish there wasn’t so long between volumes.
For once in the entire series we actually have a fight! Not a monster of the week, not a playful scrap while the larger plot unfolds, not some big group thing, a proper one-on-one fight between Rin and Yukio! And it's incredible! Massive explosions, a combination of Rin's ferocity and Yukio's strategy, emotionally charged and allowed to have a massive scale that destroys everything around them. No city to save, no friend to rescue, just one big brawl. It's hype as hell and breathtaking, delivering on the whole massive flashback arc of build-up to who these two really are and why their bond is so important.
After weeks of having bought this volume I finally found time to read it! And honestly it was okay, not bad, but still good. So, a pretty decent volume.
This whole volume focuses on the fight and rencounter between Yukio and Rin. Even though for us the readers it has felt and probably been a long time since the last time they met; according to Yukio only 5 days have passed since he left with the Illuminati.
With tears and happiness Rin exclaims how happy he is too see his little brother. However, Yukio as suicidal as ever and determined to die because his life feels meaningless to him, he is determined to make Rin kill him by any means necessary to save everyone from Satan. While Rin is determined and constantly fights against his demon self to save Yukio even if it means finally fighting against the person he loves so much.
Obviously this volume has a lot of action. I enjoyed the funny banter and moments between the siblings. Truly did feel like a sibling spat as anyone with siblings will know. I like how Rin just cares so much for Yukio and while Yukio is full of so much hate towards himself and nearly kills Rin with his ruthlessness; idk that's just Yukio at this point. Despite everything, every word, every action there is no doubt he loves Rin, always.
This volume wasn't nearly as good or as emotional as I thought it would be considering this long awaited battle. Maybe it's because I had spoiled nyself a while back with how the fight ends and a lot of the huge moments, so they simply weren't impactful as they may have been had I gone into this blind. Lol. Though, the first time I saw the spoilers they really did HURT, especially for me, who adores and loves the twins sibling bond. So, for anyone new and reading this blind the volume probably will feel better. Lol.
All the while Satan continues to observe the fight through Yukio's eyes and continously mocks Rin calling him weak and parhetic, unable to bring himself to kill his beloved brother. Such a bastard of a father let me tell you, urgh. We could have had it all.
Anyways, Konekomaru was definitley me as he screamed, 'Rin no!!!' everytime his demon side came out and did try to kill Yukio, ahh.
I also thought this volume would begin and end the fight between Yukio and Rin, but I was wrong. It will continue up to the next volume. Feels a little long, but makes sense because Yukio is in such a bad place getting it though his skull that he is loved and valued won't be simple and easy. It's a good thing he has such a good and loving older brother who will never give up on him ♥️
I really hope Kato gives us sibling bonding and fighting together against the enemy in the future. Gods know the Okumura twins need it and deserve it. Please give us cute sibling bonding Kato!!
Overall, as always look forward to learning more about the characters and getting questions to answered questions. Who knows when the next volume will release in English since in Japan the manga is in break until April of next year. But either way I look forward to it and hope for the best for my precious Okumura twins!!

Why do I want Rin to beat up Yukio now? Somehow the start of their brotherly quarrel felt a little lame, but at the end of this volume, they finally have a real fight.
Rin's feelings are justified. I'm 100% on his side. Yukio needs to understand that Rin has always looked out for him and that he should've never had kept everything from Rin. He believes Rin can't handle the truth. Like he wouldn't be able to handle knowing about their mom and Fujimoto. Ugh, I just want Rin to knock some literal sense into him.
Weirdly enough, I laughed a little when Rin went "huh? Huh???" after Yukio told him that he attempted suicide so many times. But then he called Yukio a liar and I remembered it was a serious moment, lol.
When Yukio said to Rin, "Could you and your tiny brain have solved anything?" I honestly wanted to punch him myself. Yukio needs to stop treating Rin like an immature child. I feel like Yukio underestimates Rin's maturity and his smarts, and Rin underestimates Yukio's physical strengths and abilities as an exorcist.

We are finally seeing Rin and Yukio figure their shit out, so thank god for that.
I want to say that Rin’s reaction to finding out that Yukio tried to commit suicide multiple times was so visceral to me. His shock that morphed into despair, and then anger, hit me real hard.
The action was great in this one. I like that Yukio, if on an even power level with Rin, is more powerful, as he is the one who has been trained since he was a kid and not the other way around. I don’t want to go too much into the emotional stuff, as this entire arc has been fabulous and you should read it just for the development between these two brothers who have been on different wavelengths for a very long time.
I honestly had no idea what was going on in this volume, plot wise and visually. I remember where it continues from but I still don't get the whole Rin/Yukio fight (at least in its severity) and Yukio's personality change seems even more forced/untrue in this volume despite him later revealing the truth behind his actions and emotions. I almost stopped after this volume but because of where it ended, and I already had the next volume on hand, I decided to at least finish the segment. There is so much going on on the airship that it's hard to tell who is talking and to whom, and a lot of the dialogue between Yukio and Rin in particular seems choppy and not entirely like they're actually talking to each other about the same thing.
So the reasons for the fight was really special as we get Yukio who believes that his only fate is to die as he believes that as long as he lives then he will cause danger for the rest of his friends and family but Rin cannot accept that so he is the one who is trying to create an alternative choice for his brother. It is well done, the fight itself is nothing special at least until it becomes a battle of wills between Rin and Satan as Rin figures out how to burn him out of Yukio's eye and that part was really well done.
This is good good shit. I stayed up too late finishing this. Yukio got two punches to the face in this volume from Rin and that shit was deeply satisfying. Literally cannot believe where this manga started and where we're at--the character relationships and their drama is so well realized and so fucking good. Devastated the author is on hiatus for this series rn but I do have one more volume to read before I'm caught up.
Ohhh man I can't wait for this fight to get animated, it's /so good/. It's not only cool with all the Satan technicalities they have to fight around, but it just goes to show what Rin and Yukio do and don't understand about each other. I worry about these damn brothers constantly and Yukio isn't making it any easier. Plus oh God, his confession about all of his suicide attempts at Rin's heartbroken reaction to it? Genuinely tragic.

Rin and Yukio battle against each other using their powers full out.
I like this series the most when it's focusing on friendship, or teamwork, or small pieces where they exorcise a demon here and there. An entire volume of fighting was not great for me. And it looks like the next volume is the same battle, minus powers? Hopefully this title gets back into its found family and support groove.
3.5/4 stars up to this point! Veryyy fast paced but I guess we're finally getting details? This def. wasn't how I expected the story to turn out -- in fact, I like the first arc the best, but it's still good! I love Mephisto & the quotes I get from this story are also really good ahahah
Yukio and Rin fought the whole time. First with Satan egging them on and then starting just between them. I know siblings fight but Yukio wants Rin to kill him and I feel so bad for Rin for Yukio using him like that.
So awesome how Rin used the Koma sword like that!!!
