Cold Case Detective Harriet “Harri” Harper has done what she swore to do almost twenty-years ago: find her sister and bring her home. But, she hasn’t brought her sister’s killer to justice and that keeps her up at night. Now back at work at the Los Angeles Police Department, she works her caseload while hunting her sister’s killers at night with the help of Jake Tepesky, a former FBI profiler.
When a grieving father brings the case of his missing daughter to the Cold Case Unit and her missing friend is found in a wall in a Hollywood Hills home, Harri is assigned to the case led by Detective Tom Bards, her colleague on The Creek Killer task force. As she begins to uncover the secrets of the young woman and the world that she ran in, Harri stumbles across a link to the Eugene, Oregon case that she barely survived.
As the case bumps against the rich and powerful in Hollywood, Harri pushes the boundaries in order to find the missing girl. And then another girl is taken.
When the case takes a dangerous turn, Harri must decide what sacrifices she’s willing to make. Her career is on the line and it's not the only thing at risk.
The Broken Trail is the third Detective Harri Harper crime thriller, and perfect for fans of Michael Connelly, Gregg Olsen, and James Patterson.
Its a fast moving book as I've come to expect of the author. There are triggers I had with this book, but to a large extent it managed to cover the subject matter and keep it fast paced at the same time.. Looking forward to the 4th book.
I found the two previous books in the series to be little more than mediocre but this one has certainly slipped in to that category for me. It's reasonably enjoyable but it all seems so dragged out; so many words devoted to painting a picture of of the L.A. film industry. Who cares? I just want mystery/suspense thriller that keeps me engrossed without what seemed liked lectures. The human angle to the series is getting somewhat implausible. The heroine LAPD detective lands s a case that is connected to her sister's death years previously. Yeah, right. As for the heroine her self, she's becoming irritating. Her general outlook seems more in keeping with a social worker rather than a police officer, never mind some of the misguided actions she takes. Gripes aside, overall the series has interested me enough to put the fourth instalment in my to-read list.
This is the third Detective Harri Harper book. Having solved the mystery of her sister's disappearance that happened many years ago and having located her grave, Harri is exhausted, frustrated and angry at the web of shadowy, powerful men behind so much misery. She is given a case about a missing Hollywood teen and her friend. She sets about chasing down powerful people, risking her own life to save at least one young woman. Are there more books to come? Maybe, keep a watch out!

These Harri Harper books are hard to put down, despite multiple typos and missing words.
In this one Harri & Detective Tom Bard work together to find missing very young actresses...and to solve a sex trafficking ring in the Hollywood scene.
Suspenseful. There were a few inconsistencies from Book 2, but they did not detract from the plot.
A teenage starlet disappears along with her friend. Once the starlet's body is discovered inside a wall, wrapped in plastic, the other missing girl's parents insist Harriet 'Harri' Harper be assigned to the case based on her success in finding her sister's body after 25 years. What Harri discovers can unravel a carefully woven group of wealthy movie industry and political moguls who have preyed on underage and young starlets all thinking they have found their lucky break in the film industry. Body counts rise, girls continue to go missing,, threats are made, and Harri and Tom Bards are onto a career making--or breaking--case. A great read. Starting book 4!
From book 1 the Creek Killer, to book 2 The Hidden Grave and now Book 3 The Broken Trail. Each one is exciting, well written and keeps you guessing the out come. The fourth instalment is the Night Binder which just came out this spring. Fifth book the Skin hunters came out and of June. The Little Deaths comes out Sept 25th 2021. I suggest reading the books in order since they are all connected. This is a terrific series. Highly recommend it.
My first book from this author. I thought it was pretty good. It certainly paints a disturbing picture of Hollywood which I am pretty sure is true. It was a fast read with not too much filler that lots of books have. So many books of today seem like the author wants you to know that they know wine and the latest gourmet food. So many movies now are full of the same thing plus a bushel basket full of four letter words. I much prefer a good book than today’s movies. Super Hero’s and science fiction are 90 % graphics and 10% acting and story. This book would make a better script that 80 % of today’s junk movies.
The Harriet Harper series randomly popped up on Amazon as something I might like. I'm so glad it did! This is the 3rd book in the series. I like how there is a mystery that has spanned all of the books so far but then each book has it's own case to be solved. While the lead is a woman, the author doesn't make it over the top. I think Harriet is a very strong character and always goes the extra mile to solve the case. I'm excited to read the next book! I have read the first 3 books in maybe a weeks time. You definitely don't want to put the book down!
Another really great read. The characters are very well done. Depressing at times. The young actresses go through so much horror. Don't want to give way the story. There were times I had to take a break from reading but I always went back. Don't feel bad if you need to do the same. Although it's fiction I believe things like this story do take place on a smaller scale. Highly recommended 5 stars.
LAPD Detective Harri Harper finds out the dead body of her missing sister after 25 years. Two girls missing and many more suspected to be, come to the notice of Harri & Detective Tom. The common thing in the two girls missing is that they were passionate about acting. Harri & Tom are in for a thunderstorm as they start digging deep into the missing girls case. This novel will hook you up right from the start. Superb thriller.
This is the last book I will buy by this author. She has a terrible habit of leaving enough of the crime not solved to force the reader into buying another book. If you are that insecure in your writting ability that you have to force a reader into buying your next book to get the answers, then you're not an author I care to follow. She still hasn't written the solving of the crime from book #2.
The plot and characters are well developed, the action quick paced. It’s just for such a richly created story the ending leaves to many threads hanging once again, this is the third book by this author and I’m getting a little tired of the undone storylines. I’m sure it’s supposed to be an overarching story line but it’s getting a bit annoying.
I read this book because I like the Harri Harper character. The Broken Trail was not as suspenseful or spellbinding as the two previous books of this series but is still a good read. Harri works with another detective to follow the trail of missing young girls.
I read her first The Creek Killer and was hooked! 3 days, 3 books and looking forward to the next! I really enjoy her characters and the style of writing. Others have mentioned the editing issues and I’d be glad to proof read her manuscripts😄. Highly recommend this series to anyone looking for an interesting suspenseful story!
I really enjoyed the fast moving, action packed plot in this story. I appreciated the strong and likable heroine, Harri, as well as the character development among all the main characters. I was so anxious for a great ending and that it was! I am looking forward to reading book #4 with Detective Harri.
This was the first book I have read with Harri, but I don't think it will be the last. The story was told without a lot of gory blood and explicit sexual scenes. I thought it was well written and believable. I would recommend The Broken Trail to any friends that like a good, fast paced, intelligent mystery. A surprising ending.
This the third book in this series and the first one I am posting a review for. I am so amazed at the characters and the story line in these books. I am enjoying the journey Harriet Harper is navigating with allies and posers. I can only suggest that you go back and start the series at the beginning. Dominika Best has incredible talent in weaving a page turning journey
I've heard stories of too many girls sleeping with Hollywood big shots to further their careers. It wouldn't surprise me if this book hit closest to the truth! Sorry Hollywood big types, but Harvey Weinstein made you mess your ever shifty pants! Really good story!
The 3rd instillation of this series leads Harri further into the web of finding her sister's killer. The books all sorts of intersect with each other in a predictable way that moves towards finding Laurens murderer but, I am enjoying the variety of cases and the different POV's throughout. This has been a nice easy thriller to read during a really busy week.
This is a continuing story and it help is this series is read in order. Harriet Harper is a captivating character and becomes more complex with each novel. This has become my favorite series at the moment
I enjoyed the book and read it in two sittings, but this was not really as much of a mystery as it was a suspense thriller. Several editing errors (using inferred when they meant jmplied).
Teenage girls turn up missing or dead, or both. Two detectives dive into the case turning up hundreds of girls kidnapped, assaulted and held prisoner. A little too much of the "casting couch" for me.
I rarely give a five stars rating but think this book deserves it. It involves a realistic plot and characters. The mystery is complex. I didn't stop reading until the end.
Even if it's a fictional story it looks like true facts. Thanks God for the good cops and wonderful job they do. Mrs Best your narrative is superb. I'm waiting for your next book.
Harri rescues 2 abducted young women only to barely survive being killed by the monster who'd taken them. A serial rapist/killer meets his just end at her hands while he was attempting to kill her. A great read.
My girls will love this series because it has all the things that make you want to keep going to the next one. Love the characters and the interaction between them.
I am mildly curious how the villain got into Harriet's house after it explicitly said that she set her house alarm. I get wanting to have a showdown, but consistency is key. There were a few other consistency issues in the book, as well.
This story was quite revealing as to what goes on in Hollywood and politics and the wealthy. Epstiens island only confirms that these atrocities are a reality. These poor girls who are trafficked are never going to be normal. Loved the main character Harri.
This very intense police procedural / thriller was very hard to put down. This covers the continuing case of Harper’s sister as well as a new case about a hard subject all too prevalent in today’s world. Best to start from the beginning of the series.
