剥かせて! 竜ケ崎さん #1

Shed that Skin, Ryugasaki-san! Vol. 1

Rate this book
Ryugasaki-san is a lizardgirl. Her tongue is like that of a chameleon's, her hands are like that of a gecko's, and she even has a third eyelid! Due to her unique biological makeup, she sheds her skin multiple times a year. This wouldn't ordinarily be an issue, but she suddenly finds herself (or rather, her skin) the target of a classmate's affections. The peculiar Yugami-kun has a particular interest in reptiles, and Ryugasaki-san's unique physiological features have caught his inquisitive, meticulous eye. Thus begins the story of a budding romance between two very unusual individuals. With a bit of luck, Ryugasaki-san can show the hapless Yugami-kun that there's more to her than her reptilian anatomy!

A girl who is half lizard and a boy who just loves lizards and them molting. It sounds cute.. but it got real creepy.

I fell in love with the cover, and then especially with the girl's eyes. They are quite stunning. But I also liked the blurb as I was kind of interested about the girl and why the boy loves her shedding her skin so much.

But this one just mostly creeped me out. Oh, and pissed me off to no end. The guy is just a disgusting dude. From the first chapter alone I already had a big NOPE when we saw what he was building from the molt/skin that Ryugasaki threw away (later we learn she did it on purpose as she saw him drooling over the fact she was about to shed). How did the girl react? Oh, she didn't mind apparently. What the hell girl? I would be super pissed off at the idea that someone build THAT from my skin. And then probably reporting him.
And for the rest of the book he mostly cares about her leaving a molt as his previous molt (again stolen from the trashcan, ewww) kind of fell apart. It goes so far that the girl even waits with shedding so he can have her skin. Which ends in her having terrible pain as she should have shedded already.

Then later it seems things go better... but then they don't. At times I see that he can care about her beyond what she is (aka a lizard who can shed its skin), but at times he is just such a dick.

I do love the girl though, she is sweet and caring, though she needs to have better taste in guys. For real. If you pick a guy who is mostly interested in your skin. And does those things with it. I would say run run run fucking run. I totally doesn't get why she is in love with him, but I guess love makes blind (and stupid).
I loved seeing the various lizardy things she has, from molting to gecko sticky hands. It is quite interesting what we learn about her throughout this volume. Plus, her eyes were gorgeous.

I do have questions. Are there more people like her? Are there also other animal/humans wandering around in the world other than her family? I would like to see this explored a bit further so that we can get a better idea of the world and the people in it.

But yeah, with that horrible guy.. I am just not sure if I want to continue.

2020 Read #496

What the hell did I just read?? A reptile and molting kink is...uh...something that could only come out of Japan. The art is pretty at times, at least!

Highly disturbing, yet oddly fascinating.

I've never really thought much about lizards. I've never really liked them. I'm not scared of them, they just aren't my thing. However, if there really were lizard-girls as cute as Ryu-chan, I'd certainly want to get to know a few. Such a weird fetish. And he likes being slapped around, too. Yikes! Yet she still loves him. And he finally admitted to her that he's not just after her most. No, he loves her too. This 1st volume was interesting enough that I plan to pick up the next volume. Art, excellent. Such detail. Dialogue, a little weird at times, but good. Characters, likeable, & in Ryu-chan's case, completely adorable.

Delightfully endearing, this comic is a collection of short stories (like 5-7 pages each), detailing the budding relationship of two high schoolers. As the main characters are a demi-human lizard girl and a human boy with near obsessive interest in her molting, it might not be a story for everyone.

However, if you're into a cute rom-com with a little bit of a freaky side (featuring egg thieves, figurines made from molt, and the beginnings of what may be a BDSM fetish) then you've found the right comic for you.

On a 10 star scale, this feels like a 3.5 out of 10 for me. Sure, there is fan service in here, that is setup decently. But that is already done better from other manga, think Ayakashi Triangle. The competition is tough out here and "Shed that Skin, Ryugasaki-san!" needs to spice things up some how.

The entire premise is a kid who has a reptile girl fetish. The end, there is no real story, or nothing wanting a reader to stay for more. Besides the fan service pictures.

At first, I was wondering if I could even get past ten pages. Not sure if this is considered a spoiler so marking it anyway - Only downside is how annoying Yugami-kun is and his persistence in trying to get her skin/wanting to see her molt. I understand one having a fetish/kink, but jeez. The story didn’t really seem to go too far in plot but, the art is very pretty so it kept me entertained.

Shed that Skin, Ryugasaki-san! is a story about a lizard girl named Ryugasaki-san and a boy that is in love with her molting skin.

I didn't really like the story that much but it had great art.

Thanks to Edelweiss and Kaiten Books for the ARC.

Read this one today. It's on the weirder side of slice of life / romance, kind of like Discommunication, Vol. 1 from J-Novel Club, the male character having weird fetish like demands and the female character wanting love, and the two meeting in the middle emotionally + needs wise.

The main character here has a history of being into oddities like bugs and lizards, it's ostracized him from his classmates. Similarly, the female character, Ryugasaki-san, is welcome into the social clique only because of her looks, but her reptilian traits (yes, you read that right) keep her ever so slightly in the "abnormal" territory (she has a nightmare of when she was little and the kids made fun of her for having a lunch packed with crickets, which are a dietary need of lizards I guess). So these two sort of outcasts end up finding common ground in a very bizarre give and take, which is that the male character loves Ryugasaki's molting skin and gets it in exchange for a date (Ryugasaki noticed him stalking her like a man interested in a woman can do according to her classmates and falls for him cause he shows kindness to a lizard... Again, bit odd). The skin is then taken, and glued together to form his own privately worshiped molted figure of the girl... Creepy! But she sees it early on after climbing to his balcony with her webbed like fingers and comes to terms with his weirdness for the sake of love.

There's some sweet scenes in here between the weirdness, and there's some really funny exchanges (I love the Ao-Chan style over imagining that Ryugasaki has when she searches to see if people that worship figures do stuff with them). The author also includes the occasional detail about lizards to explain Ryugasaki's actions / personality traits (for instance, Lizards needing Ultraviolet Rays to explain why she loves the beach + sun tanning, or how lizards that overexert themselves with physical activity need to cool down in the shade). There's some harrowing stuff involving molting too that you wouldn't necessarily think about if you aren't a lizard lover.

The story is a lot more focused on school life, home life not as much. You get to see the main characters mom ever so briefly, so parents do exist in this. I'd really like to see each of their home lives. In particular, I'd be curious if the demi-human lizard in Ryugasaki has a human parent on one side.

Creepy and Cute

I feel sorry that Ryugaski, being a girl with lizard DNA, falls for a boy, Yugami, who is obsessed with her skin which she sheds several times a year. Now certainly his love for all things reptiles is not creepy in and of itself but the fact that he uses her skin to create (a very fragile) life-size model of Ryugasaki in the nude makes me wonder if he sees her as less than human and therefore acceptable to create this strange taxidermy model or if he is just a typical horny boy who doesn't quite understand what is inappropriate and happens to fall on the scale side of the furry spectrum (considering there are more than likely other Demi-humans with animal features in the world it might be common enough.)

In the end as Ryugasaki and Yugami hang out together she tolerates his intrusiveness due to his affection for her (see lizards) and how he shows her kindness regardless of being fairly oblivious and a bit perverted. In the mean time it seems he starts to realize he is developing deeper feelings rather than just friendship though being a social outcast he has a lot to learn so maybe someday he will get his act together.

As an additional note if you are interested in this series I should warn you that it is put out by one of the lesser known groups (Kaiten Books LLC) and although it has 2 volumes so far the last one was released in 2021 so there could be a whole assortment of reasons for not releasing new volumes even though the series is up to at least volume 4 in Japanese right now. Being a smaller company with few manga titles under their banner it is always possible any hardship might see future translation to English for series stalled or halted altogether. I wish you the best of luck in your future reads with you enjoy the series that eventually more will be translated. :)
