He's not the marrying kind...

The Duke of Rathmore is not the sort of man to indulge in a happily ever after. Chase gave up on love, and even affection, a long time ago. He spends his days managing his dukedom and his nights in far less wholesome pleasures. Which is why he can't believe his luck when a spring storm lands him on the doorstep of the Moorish family. The Honorable Thomas Moorish has five stunning daughters, each more delectable than the last. And most beautiful of all, the eldest, Miss Ophelia.

She's certain love is the answer...

After the death of her mother, Ophelia has spent much of her youth helping to raise her four younger sisters. At nearly two and twenty, she's yet to have a season or even any romance of her own. But what she's lacked in real life excitement, Ophelia's imagined through the pages of all her favorite books. And when a handsome duke lands on her door, she's certain this is her chance for a real-life fairytale. Except after their magical first kiss, everything goes wrong. She knows the plot, and he isn't following it. Instead of asking for her hand, Rathmore gives her a polite but cold, thank you. And rather than professing his love, he announces he'll leave first thing the next morning. The man's not her prince at all but a complete rogue.

Ophelia's tempted to give up romancing this rake. But he hints at a past filled with so much hurt, she's certain if she broke through that hard heart, she'd find a man in desperate need of her affection.

Is it possible he is the one who needs to be saved?

Did Mother Nature and Cupid conspire together the night the jaded Duke of Rathmore found himself at the home of Thomas Moorish and his five beautiful daughters? Was the oldest daughter an angel from heaven or a siren who doesn’t even know her own powers? Two hardheaded souls will play a game of emotional ping pong in Tammy Andresen’s WHEN ONLY AN INDECENT DUKE WILL DO is a delightful romance that jumpstarts the new series Romancing the Rake as, once again, the more rakish they are, the harder they fall!

A love that almost never got started, verbal sparring, words left unsaid, you have to love a romance that balances history, heart and humor along with just enough heat to be swoon worthy! As always, Tammy Andresen gives us a happy ending after a journey well worth escaping into

I received a complimentary edition from Tammy Andresen! This is my honest and voluntary review.

There were some really cute romantic moments for me in this Fairytale'ish short story. And then there was some eyeroll-worthy moments to bring it down to a 3-star.

Ok, so the heroine, who is a country gentry miss with no eligible bachelors in sight, is determined to never accept a marriage proposal unless it is uber romantic and filled to the brim with love. Well, the somewhat man of her dreams shows up in her corner of the world, and within 24 hours she manages to get this Duke to propose marriage to her. Alas, he forgot to use the L-word in the proposal, so she is gonna need to sit on it and mull it over before accepting.

Her sisters were super annoying, selfish and mannerless, the heroine was a super emotional inconsistent hot mess, the hero was 'ok' and had some good cute banter with his little lady, I actually think this story would have been much better if it was longer and the author was able to give the story more time to develop.

My review :

Will the duke be the knight in shining armor or the villain for her damsel not-so-in-distress self ...

Yes, a new series!
I always love Mrs Tammy Andresen first book in her series as she introduces all her characters and my game is to see who will be matched with whom.
The opening reminded me of How to Reform a Rake with a duke paired with the eldest daughter and them setting the pace for the youngest siblings of the heroine.
Ophelia is a dreamer, she mostly lives in the fantasy of her books, so much she enters this story with a very naive view of the world.
The duke kissed her after one evening of acquaintance, but why did he not propose marriage!
Chase has reached the end of an arc, he is bored by his own pursuits, he is seeking something but he does not know what or who.
So stealing a kiss to the his host’s elder daughter appeared like a fun way to end a day gone wrong.
Like most Tammy Andresen, it is love at first sight as in the short span of a two days time, they meet and fall in love.
As I often says, it is too fast for me, yet the author adds dents and holes to their journey making it looks longer than the real length.
This one is sweet and fun with a dash of fairytale in Chase courting of Ophelia.

I must admit I did enjoy the strengths of the H/h. The h held out in the temptation the H presented and I so appreciated how she was strong and chastised him for leading her down the path of ruin.

I admired her strength/spirit and how she put the H in his place. She protected her sister's and wasn't afraid to speak her mind no matter what your rank. I liked she wasn't like all the other h in stories and succumbed to an H. She did hold off til over the 2/3rd's mark and I was disappointed. The H is a rake of the first order, and his reputation with women is like a notch on the bedpost. I wanted her to be different - no didn't happen.

This story ends at the 90% and rest if blurb of the next story in the series. The author has set up an interesting relationship with the sister's and the father is loving and caring.

There is lovemaking etc., prior to marriage, heat level 3.75 out of 5. I did like that the h brought up fidelity with the H knowing his past. I always admire an h who does this.

No cheating, no cliffhanger, HEA, romance is quick and some spice. (ljb)

Jaded and disgruntled with life, Chase, the Duke of Rathmore is on his way to a house party that promises to give him the diversion he thinks he needs. That is until a storm forces him to request the hospitality of the Moorish family where he meets the host's five delightful daughters. However, it is only the oldest daughter, Ophelia, that catches his interest. Ophelia had to grow up quickly when her mother died, leaving her with the care of her father's household and the nurturing of her four younger sisters. The unexpected arrival of a duke on their doorstep is the subject of all her fantasies and he certainly has the looks and the charm to make her heart beat a little faster. Escaping her responsibilities by reading and entertaining daydreams, Ophelia is easily enchanted by the Duke, but her dreams come crashing down when her Prince Charming proves to be a rogue. Chase realises that he has disappointed Ophelia and much to his own surprise he finds himself longing to set matters right. This book is the start of a new series that promises to be every bit as enjoyable as the author's previous Regency books. The story is well written, entertaining, and witty and comes to a warmhearted conclusion.

I've come across Ms. Andresen's name many times when reading historical romances so I picked up my first in A Rake's Ruin series. Who wouldn't love an indecent duke who happens to be in danger of falling in love?

First of all, this book was much shorter than I expected at a mere 174 pages, but it packed in enough character development to meet Ophelia's family and future rogues to be led to ruin.

Ophelia is a strong young woman being the eldest of 5 sisters and raising them without a mother and no opportunity to have her season in London due to her father having to work to provide for his family. She knows what she wants which is a fairy tale with a great love. What she gets is a handsome duke who may have entirely different intentions.

Chase, The Duke of Rathmore, hates the sea and is rethinking his plan to attend a party near the sea filled with debauchery and indecency. He's become bored with his rogue life and during a stormy night seeks refuge at a home filled with a father and his five daughters. It's one daughter he is drawn to, but she's not like other women who throw themselves at him. She's innocent, yet headstrong. He wanted to leave her alone, but she bewitched him and made him think illogically. So the kiss he gave her in the library was as far as he planned to go until he wanted more.

I wasn't sure I liked Chase at first. After all, he wasn't called the indecent duke for nothing and he seemed a bit predator-like at the beginning. But he showed his more gentlemanly side when he protected Ophelia and her sister Juliet from the indecent lords who were also stranded in the town. I loved the way Ophelia dressed the lords down by telling them she would shoot them if they touched her sisters. Ophelia seemed a bit naive about wanting her fairy tale life, but Chase seemed to resign himself to giving her just that as he convinces Ophelia of his noble intentions of marrying her.

The lords who are mentioned in this book will have some interesting stories of their own so I can't wait to find out how they are bitten by the love bug.  As for Ophelia's father and sisters, they need to learn to keep a secret for heaven's sake.

If you enjoy a quick historical romantic read with heat and instalove, give this book a try.

Can Fairytales Come True? When only an Indecent Duke Will Do by Tammy Andresen is book 1 in her new series Romancing the Rake and what a way to start a series. I so enjoyed this story of romantic adventure and fairytales. Ophelia is a girl after my own heart and a true romantic. What girl does’t want to be swept off her feet. Tammy has a real talent in writing a story and her characters are just so charming. This story has a fear of the ocean, death, morning, loving sisters who can’t keep secrets, stranded in a storm, rogues and rakes, a supposed scandalous house party, protection, innocents and love at first sight. I highly recommend this book.

Sugary sweet with very naive heroine and very little conflict. There is instalove - heroine believes that rakish hero who kissed her after meeting her about 5 seconds earlier will instantly propose. And the hero actually does propose 24 h later because he is already madly in love with heroine.

It was a freebie on Amazon.

The Duke of Rathmore is not the sort of man to indulge in a happily ever after. Chase spends his days managing his dukedom and his nights in far less wholesome pleasures. When travelling to a house party at the Baron of Balstead's country property he's caught in a violent spring storm & seeks shelter at the nearest house & so lands on the doorstep of the Moorish family. The Honourable Thomas Moorish has five stunning daughters, each more delectable than the last. And most beautiful of all, the eldest, Miss Ophelia. After the death of her mother, Ophelia has spent much of her youth helping to raise her four younger sisters. At nearly two and twenty, she’s yet to have a season or even any romance of her own. This is the first book in a new series & once again the author has nailed a short story. Very well written, strong characters & a well paced plot all draw you in from the start & leave you wanting more at he end. I read it in a sitting & loved every page. Chase is the disillusioned Duke trying to get over his guilt, Ophelia is the eldest sister who has had to mother her four younger sisters & likes nothing more than to bury her head in a romantic book, I loved both of them, their attraction was immediate & sizzled & they both fell hard & fast. I wonder if the three other lords will make it to he house party & can’t wait to find out

A delightfully enchanting story that fills this romance reader's heart with all that is to love in historical fiction. Who of us doesn't dream of a Prince Charming, Knight in Shining Armor or a strong hero to rescue us from our regular life? Or at least read about it and find that happy ever after we all love.
Ophelia Moorish is one such girl, having spent most of her youth helping to raise her four younger sisters after her mother passed away. Never having a season of her own, she finds fuels her imagination with books.
Having found himself in a storm and in need of shelter, Chase, the Duke of Rathmore stops at the home of the Moorish family. He cannot believe the five stunning sisters with the most delectable, the eldest, Miss Ophelia.
A magic kiss? Not so magical? What's to happen? Once I started this story I could not put if down until the end. Seeing how Chase's past has put the barrier around his heart and is need of love, the only hope is that Ophelia can break through. Don't miss this first in a series that is certain to be outstanding!

Shouldn't no mean NO?

The scenes of the H preying upon the h are numerous and atrocious. Some seem to think they are romantic and seductive little episodes. But, picture the H as a villain in that same scenario....still makes sense doesnt it??? Cuz that's the more realistic scenario!!!

Or, imagine a guy coming on to you like that in real life. Would you appreciate all the unwanted touches in private places from a person you met the day before?? (Take note: being handsome does not forgive him of his actions)
The H in this story even knows what he is doing is wrong and feels a twinge of remorse. Very noble of him I'm sure....

How this trope has been misconstrued into romance I have yet to fathom, but I am beginning to see how easily men get away with sexual harassment in the "real world." Ladies...if you are trying to figure out if his actions are okay...they are definitely not okay!!! Doesn't matter if you are a virgin and "just don't know how it would feel but he can't possibly mean any harm." Doesn't matter if his actions can not be defined or labeled as sexual harassment, if YOU are uncomfortable, he.should.quit.
(Even if the gasping movement of you bosom tells him otherwise...we all gotta breath people...and in stressful situations breathing gets more intense, hense, movement of the bosom which is located on top of the diaphragm).

Use common sense, speak up for yourself and please do not be complacent is this horrific matter of harrassment that permeates our society so viciously and subtlety.

(May make one think: "Well I am a little uncomfortable with his actions towards me but from all that I have learned, his aggression is romantic therefore I must not protest cuz he just loves me so much so all is well").

***This is especially disturbing in a historical setting because if caught even alone in the same room together the girl's WHOLE LIFE is ruined with 10% chance of salvageability. And if she were to become pregnant...100% life ruined - could be tossed into the street - have to resort to prostitution - die of disease/starvation- never see family again. What changes in the man's life?? Possibly forced into marriage...but they are still accepted into society, can continue to have "fun" with multiple women and pay little to no consequences for their actions. How fking SELFISH are those actions from the man? SELFISH - NOT romantic.***

This needs to be brought to light and spoken of because this trope in pop culture is so pervasive that girls think they should keep their mouths shut about being harrassed or worse.

This scenario might be described as something that starts with an r but it sure ain't the word romance.

**Also the writing is mediocre at best so really this book has nothing to recommend.

In the new Romancing the Rake series by Tammy Andresen, the premise in this Regency period story is delightfully carried out with numerous interesting characters and intriguing situations. A man and woman come in contact when circumstances unexpectedly have their paths cross, and an undeniable attraction quickly develops along with their personal beliefs being greatly affected. I am always fascinated with this time in history, and WHEN ONLY AN INDECENT DUKE WILL DO let me see how one couple chose to respond to not only the rules of society but also their own inner wishes.

When a baron comes up with a plan in 1818, he puts it into motion by inviting several titled men to a party at his home outside of London. One of the men is the Duke of Rathmore, someone who tries to carry out his duties yet also enjoy himself. On the way to the festivities, a storm forces Chase to stop at the home of a man with five daughters, and Ophelia Moorish catches his eye from their initial introduction. She is the oldest daughter in the family, and several events have made it impossible for her to have a season. But perhaps fate has brought a man to her instead of having them meet in London.

Although both Chase and Ophelia have not experienced true love as adults, she has her own ideas about this feeling from all the romances that she has read, while he thinks it is a sentiment which will never be in his life. While he is drawn to her, he at first thinks it is just lust. But when he realizes there could be more between them than he has ever felt for another woman, how he proceeds could either bring him lasting happiness or only add to his desolate existence. I really liked how all played out in this introduction to men and women living in a time when there were different rules each should abide by, and what happened if they decided to follow their hearts instead. Ophelia and her sisters are all charming, and I had a great time getting to know a little about each one. As for Chase, he has suffered much in the past, and now has an opportunity to change his ways and future. Rating – 4.5 Stars

This is going to be a fun and entertaining series if this first book is an example of what is to come! The story was fun and the character, both main & secondary, were all so likable.

Chase, Duke of Rathmore, came into title at the age of six & ten, when his parent were killed at sea during a storm. He should have been with them and blames himself for their death and he has lived his life, full of debauchery since their death. He has become bored with the usual drinking, gambling and womanizing & decides to attend an "unsavory" house party that should help his boredom - but bad weather forced him to stop at a house for shelter. The Honorable Thomas Moorish and his five beautiful daughters offer him food and shelter from the storm.

Miss Ophelia takes one look at Chase and just knows her prince has come. Since the death of their mother and her being the oldest, Ophelia has been the mother figure to her sisters and run the household for her father. She is beautiful, smart, reads a lot and her favorite books are fairy tales.

Chase & Ophelia are drawn to each other instantly. She knows he is her Prince Charming, who has come to fall madly in love with her, ask her to marry him and take her away to live happily ever after. Chase thinks Ophelia is beautiful and knows she is an innocent and even a rogue like him knows not to over step bounds. After fighting his desire for her, he kisses her - her first kiss and his best kiss but that is all. Ophelia finally realizes that Chase will not marry her, even after the kiss, and he leaves. What will happen - will he return - will he come to his senses? I highly recommend this book for a light-hearted, romantic story with a little spice and a great couple you will love!

When Only an Indecent Duke, Book 1 of the Romancing the Rake series, was about Chase Rathmore, the Duke of Rathmore, a man who became a Duke at the age of 16 when he lost both of his parents when their ship sank (for which he felt guilty he hadn't traveled with them), and Ophelia Moorish, oldest of five daughters to the Honorable Thomas Moorish, who lost her mother at a young age and she helped her father raise her four sisters.
Chase, along with several other titled men, had been invited to a weekend house party near the ocean that was expected to be full of debauchery. On his way there, due to the bad weather, he ended up at the home of Sir Moorish and his five daughters. He took one look at Ophelia and the chemistry was off the charts between them. Ophelia was looking for her Prince Charming or Knight in Shining Armor, and she thought she had found him in the Duke. After one kiss, Ophelia hoped Chase had feelings for her, but he told her he would not make a good husband.
The following morning, Chase, continuing his trip towards the house party, learned that the bridge had been partially washed away and, therefore could not leave the village. He also ran into some of the other lords that were now trapped and had to find another way to the house party.
When the other lords met Ophelia and one of her sisters, they decided to "have some fun" with them, much to the anger and jealousy of Chase. He vowed he would protect them all from the other men.
While the chemistry was strong, the passion was even hotter. All the times they spent together, the sparks simply filled the air around them. The drama, a touch of angst, the humor, were all prevalent and complemented the story.
This book will definitely join the other Keeper for the Shelves stories as it was definitely an excellent book. Can't wait to see what the others in the series have in store.

When Only an Indecent Duke Will Do by Tammy Andresen is the first book of a new series called Romancing the Rake. The book focuses on Chase, the Duke of Rathmore and Ophelia. Although Chase the Duke of Rathmore is not looking for a wife, he stops at a manor house and begs for shelter in a horrible storm. Little did he expect that he would show up at a house with 5 unmarried daughters.

Chase hates storms after all it is how his parents died suddenly. Chase was alone and tried everything to feel better including avoiding the ocean. He was on his way to a “house party” with lots of debauched rich young men, when he had to seek shelter. The manor he stopped at was not what he expected, nor was Ophelia. Ophelia is the oldest and has practically raised her young sisters. She is a romantic and is expecting to be swept off her feet. Chase does not sweep her anywhere. He demands and expects and he will have to change.

While I am always up for a new author and a new series, I wasn’t totally in love with the series and main characters. It felt rushed with Chase changing his mind overnight. However I enjoyed Ophelia’s family and the way they can not keep secrets and stay out of mischief. When Only an Indecent Duke Will Do by Tammy Andresen was a pretty good historical romance.

Chase, the Duke of Rathmore and a group of desolate rakes was invited to the home of the Baron of Balstead for a house party. Chase is a rake of the first order. He feels guilt for the death of his parents and lives a jaded life to forget. On the way to this party, he gets caught in a storm and has to seek shelter with Thomas Moorish and his five beautiful daughters.
Ophelia Moorish has always enjoyed reading fairy tales and dreaming of her own Prince Charming. When Chase shows up at their door during the storm seeking shelter, there is an immediate attraction between the two. Ophelia is the eldest of the girls and helped to raise her sisters after their mother died. Reading stories has gotten here through not having an exciting life of her own.
When in town, they come upon two of the other men headed to the house party, Ophelia realizes the kind of man Chase really is and feels her dream shattering.
Chase knows she is the one he wants to marry and asks her sisters to help him with a romantic gesture to propose.
Can a dreamer win her own Prince? Can a jaded rake find true love? Find out in this first book in Tammy Andresen's new series Romancing the Rake. It's a fun read and a great start to her new series. I can't wait for the rest of them.

When Only an Indecent Duke Will Do is the first book in the charming Romancing the Rake series. The book was short and fast-paced but as always, the author was able to develop wonderful characters that touched your heart. The Honorable Thomas Moorish lives in the enchanting town of Seabridge Gate with five marriageable daughters. Mother Nature has worked her magic and stranded Chase, Duke of Rathmore, during a heavy storm that interrupts his travels to a house party. He arrives on the doorstep of the Moorish family, intending to continue to the house party. He was captivated by Ophelia at first glance but after the death of his parents, he had lived a life of debauchery and wasn’t planning on settling down any time soon. Ophelia wanted a storybook romance and excitement. Having never gone to London she was naïve and easily hurt after Chase kisses her, says thank you, and leaves. When Chase returns with three men, Ophelia knows she needs to protect her sisters from the rakes. She refuses Chase’s proposal because she wants to marry a man who loves her. Can Chase convince her to say yes with his romantic proposal?

When Only An Indecent Duke Will Do is an entertaining historical romance by Tammy Andresen. Ms. Andresen has delivered a well-written book, my favorite part being the outstanding characters. The Baron of Balstead has invited a collection of rakes to his home to what they believe will be a party filled with liquor and women. Chase was dragging his feet about getting to the party. When a storm caused him to take shelter at Highland Manor where Thomas Moorish and his daughters made him welcome. Ophelia was impressed with Chase, until they ran into some of the other men that were headed to the party and she found what type of party it was. Chase and Ophelia's story is packed with drama, humor and spice. I enjoyed this book and look forward to my next book by Tammy Andresen. When Only An Indecent Duke Will Do is book 1 of the Romancing the Rake Series but can be read as a standalone. This is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger.

This was a quick read. The description says each story in the series is a stand-alone, which they are; however, you will get much more out of them (particularly as you read each one) if you read them in order.

It was a nice story but I did have trouble with Ophelia basically falling in love after one kiss. This is a nice set up for the rest of the books.

However, one thing that took me out of the story, and partly why I didn't rate this book higher (and as I get further into the series it seems to get worse) is the lack of editing. The most glaring was Lord Crestwood's description - on page 9 he's described as "dark-haired" and then on page 56 of the same book he's running his hand through "wavy blond hair." It actually confused me and I think this is a symptom of trying to manage way too many characters in a series but you'd still expect the author to at least keep them straight within the same book.

A cute quick read

So there’s not as much depth to this novel compared to what I normally prefer, but that didn’t bother me this time because I was looking for something rather sweet and diverting. This fit the bill perfectly in the end and I enjoyed it.

If you’re looking for a fun quick read that sets up what promises to be a whole series of fun quick reads then I highly recommend.

I’m enjoying the characters a lot and it’s definitely insta love happening in these books. The romantic portions are definitely more than fade to black but they also aren’t super explicit either. I’m a fan of that balance.

I think the depth I would normally be looking for will be there in the series as a whole just not in the individual books. As I plan to continue the series I’m okay with that.

A Great Series Starter!
I guess the prospect of landing and wedding an Indecent Duke was the ultimate achievement for a young lady in those days and why not! One might as well reach for the stars!
This is such a delightful story and at times I wasn't sure who was doing the woo'ing, Ophilia or Chase, but she cleverly reels him in with her romance stories and he would just love to bed her. There is such a lovely ending to this tale of love.
Favulous main characters and 5 interesting daughters to the Hon. Thomas Moorish, each with their own little quirks and special personalities.
I really enjoyed reading this story and yes, I do recommend it for it's lightness, fun and enjoyment that it gave me.

I enjoyed the authors style of writing but this book was just too sweet to handle.

The characters are great - maybe to unrealistic for me.

The heroine is a dreamer stuck in the clouds that believes a kiss means I love you, lets get married.

The hero, is your typical bachelor that intends on not getting married due to his past- not a new plot in historical romance.

The difference here is that literally in a few pages he goes from not wanting anything serious to being madly in love with the heroine and must have her at any cost.

The was very little interaction between characters for anyone to realistically fall in love, attraction- yes, lust - yes. In love, no.

If you are looking for a quick, easy read of super sweet, insta love, you'll really enjoy this book.

When a rake feels the need to change, it is providential that he should unintentionally meet the lady of his dreams while on the way to a not-so-honourable ball (actually, a house party). Ophelia and her sisters are sweet, strong-willed and wanting love and romance - I can see them as Rapunzel (although their father is nothing like the imprisoning witch). Chase, on the other hand, is a prince charming in thick disguise; it took him a while to figure out that that was supposed to be his role. This was a sweetly steamy romance, that has elements of a fairy tale retelling without being a fairy tale. It is not as deep as Stephanie Laurens' Cynster series, but Ophelia and her sisters definitely call the Cyster sisters to mind.

She is looking for a fairy tale romance!

Ophelia leads a sheltered life but she is a avid reader. So, life isn’t not a great mystery but she has dreams of having a love that she reads about in romance books. She is the oldest of 5 sisters and is their “Mother” since she was a young girl.

Along came a handsome Duke caught in a severe rainstorm! Chase opens her heart and hopes that she is what he has been searching for since the loss of his parents.

This is a very enjoyable read. This is my honest review. Don’t think you will be disappointed if you want to read a love story.

I enjoy Historical Romances but, don’t often read them!I liked this as the author made the girls & the “Lords” be of that time. They thought differently then the present & there were more classes of people so, they acted differently. The four Titled gentlemen arrived in a small town on their way to a party! They spent the night & met five sisters & their father who was a Widower. What would happen to these girls when they meet these rakes? A very nice story that I would recommend!

If you're looking for a quick brush with some good old fashioned romance, this is for you...

The writing is good, there are some sweet bits. I enjoyed the rendezvous between the Duke and Ophelia and their sweet romance is ideal for its time... but there was no wondering, no real depth. Its a bit like a taster, almost like a first chapter, and I'm not sure it's given me quite enough to want to read the next.
