This is a nice paleo cookbook but does not contain nutritional information, which is a serious drawback in any cookbook for me. My hubby and I are currently eating keto for health reasons, and this cookbook relies heavily on high carb foods like potatoes, dates, coconut sugar, arrowroot powder and maple syrup, so a lot of the recipes are out for us, though I could make them for my kids. Not a lot of them really struck me as great fits for any of us. There are photographs for about 1/3 or 1/4 of the recipes. The beginning goes into a lot of detail about the paleo diet and the author's back story, which will be helpful for those who are new to paleo but redundant for those of us familiar with paleo eating (though her personal history is interesting). It will be a nice addition to your paleo library if you don't mind the lack of nutritional information.

I read a temporary digital ARC of this book for review.

I do not like it when cookbooks do not include nutrition facts with their recipes, but I can overlook that somewhat because I got so many recipes from this book that I want to try. I especially like the soup section. #CleanPaleoComfortFoodCookbook #NetGalley

My family and I have been eating mostly paleo for about 7 years now. Paleo has come a long way in that time, going from a relatively fringe buff-dude version of 'clean eating' to a well-known and established foodway. I recommend anyone who struggles with their weight, juggles multiple food allergies or sensitivities, or just wants to eat a more easily digestible diet gives it a try, even for a little while, if it's medically safe to do so. Even if you don't have any health problems, paleo really does make you feel more energetic and less lethargic.

As anyone who's searched for recipes online can attest, search results can be dicey - and then some. I was very excited to review 'Clean Paleo Comfort Food Cookbook' by Jessica DeMay as I've found that cookbook recipes are usually more reliable - and with some of the ingredients on the expensive side, you do want some reassurance that you won't just end up with a gooey mess of wasted ingredients.

I was curious what DeMay meant by 'clean' paleo - the word 'clean' is a bit of a knee-jerk at times, and can smack of a judgmental attitude to anything not considered, by whatever arbitrary standards, clean. Luckily, in this context DeMay simply means that most of the recipes are made from scratch (that is, from their constituent ingredients, and not pre-packaged foods or sauces) and several are low-FODMAP.

This is an American publication, and it shows - there are recommendations for products you really cannot get outside the US, such as 'coconut whipped topping' (I presume this comes in a squeeze tube like faux whipped cream?) and grain-free tortillas. There are recommendations for US-only brands, but these are almost always couched with 'or other [sugar-free/nitrate-free etc]' item. I'm very happy to see both volumetric and weight-based (metric) measurements offered, and temperatures in both Fahrenheit and Celsius - thank you!

Even as an American expat myself, I was confused by at least two items mentioned: 'stuffing mushrooms', a term I'd never heard before, but which appears to imply simply the de-stemmed caps of small brown / 'baby bella' style mushrooms (I'm sure good-sized white mushrooms would be perfectly fine as well); and 'frozen hash browns'. Hash browns have always implied the completed product - that is, little lumps of shredded potato held together by G-d knows what combination of industrial additives to become a perfect crispy puck when fried or baked. I'm sure there are some paleo-friendly frozen hash browns out there, but I realised by about the third recipe that DeMay meant 'frozen shredded potatoes' rather than actual hash browns. That's a pretty important distinction!

I was a little baffled by the use of, specifically, garlic-infused olive oil in so many recipes - I dig the time-saving idea, but is this something we can make ourselves, or are there things we should look for on the label to ensure it's paleo-friendly? Can we substitute some regular olive oil and minced fresh garlic? etc. DeMay never uses unflavoured olive oil in any of the recipes. I don't know if that's a Midwestern thing, but almost every single Mains recipe uses garlic-infused olive oil.

I was also surprised that, counter to well-loved paleo gut health recommendations, there weren't any fermented foods involved, either as recipes or as ingredients - things like kefir (coconut for those who do dairy-free), sauerkraut, and kimchi, just to name a few. They're great flavour-boosters and help with digestion.

Aside from those little quirks, the recipes read as very solid. DeMay seems to be particularly good with sauces, with her home-made ketchup recipes (one low-FODMAP, one not) very promising.

Sections include: Introduction (to the author, paleo, kitchen staples and tools); Basics (sauces); Breakfast; Appetizers and Sides; Mains; Soups; and Desserts.

Some of the breakfast offerings (Chocolate Chip Muffins, Chocolate Cereal, Butter Pecan Granola) are definitely sweetener-heavy and indulgent, but then, the title is 'Comfort Food' - and there are plenty of non-sweet breakfast offerings as well, such as Breakfast Sausage and Broccoli and Ham Crustless Quiche. Appetizers and Sides includes a no-corn cornbread recipe that sounds excellent. Mains are a mixed bag; Pecan-Crusted Chicken Tenders sound amazing, Ham and Pineapple Chicken Salad (yes, as in mayo-based chicken salad) less so. Still, there are a lot of familiar American favourites in here and things that are pizza- or takeaway-adjacent are helpful when transitioning to paleo eating.

The soups are somewhat less enticing; 'Taco Soup' looks like watery tomato juice with add-ins, and Hamburger Soup doesn't sound like an enticing combination of ingredients. Carrot Ginger Soup looks and sounds much better.

This being a comfort food cookbook, the dessert section is huge and includes everything from brownies (three recipes) to ice cream to cookies. DeMay's Banoffee Pie, Mike's Favorite Chocolate Chip Cookies, and Butternut Squash Pecan Crumble all sound absolutely wonderful.

Recipes are laid out neatly and the font is comfortable. I do wish that there were photos of every recipe - there are times you roll past six or seven recipes before getting to another recipe with a photo. I understand that these increase the printing cost, but if you're not used to paleo cooking, you do want some reassurance that what you've made is, indeed, what the recipe should look like, as the results are often far from identical to their non-paleo versions.

Still, this is a very nice paleo cookbook for anyone needing a bit of comfort, particularly those readers based in North American who may have easier access to some of the brands mentioned, and would make a lovely gift for anyone experienced with paleo cooking who wants to try some new, tasty recipes.

Originally published on my blog: Nonstop Reader.

Clean Paleo Comfort Food Cookbook is a lifestyle/diet guide with lots of varied recipes for paleo friendly food developed and curated by Jessica DeMay. Released 12 Jan 2021 by Quarto on their Fair Winds Press imprint, it's 192 pages and is available in paperback format.

The introduction includes a very good overview over the paleo diet, what it includes (and doesn't) and some theory behind the food selections. There's also an introduction to basic cooking equipment and ingredients. This book's angle is the addition of hearty nostalgic comfort food emphasis. Everyone has those special comfort food recipes and the author has made an effort to incorporate that emotional nostalgia into the mix. There's also an emphasis on "clean" paleo... there are no non-compliant foods, and no "reintroduced" ingredients, so readers looking for strictly paleo recipes won't have to make any substitutions or adjustments to the recipes included here to be paleo.

The recipes are grouped by category: basics, breakfast, appetizers & sides, chicken turkey & pork, beef, soups, and desserts. The recipes have their ingredients listed bullet style in a sidebar. Measurements are given in US standard with metric measures in parentheses (yay!). Special tools and ingredients are also listed, along with yields and cooking directions. Most of the ingredients are easily sourced at any moderately well stocked grocery store. Nutritional information is not included. Tips and variations on each recipe are included in a text box at the end. Special dietary comments (low FODMAP, nut-free, egg-free, etc) are included in the headers.

The book also includes a short author bio and index (not included in the eARC for review, so I can't comment on those aspects of the book).

The photography is clear and attractive. Roughly 25% of the recipes include one or more photos which are easy to follow. Serving suggestions are attractive and appropriate.

Four stars. This would make a superlative selection for busy cooks wanting a simplified way to test the paleo diet and make a real effort to give it a genuine try in an accessible and logical manner. I would recommend it highly to cooks who are trying to incorporate healthier choices for their families without sacrificing taste and "family friendly" presentations.

Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.

Disclaimer: I received this book in exchange of my honest opinion.

I had problems with this book from the beginning - I also quickly learn that I have problems with the entire paleo diet.

Firstly, the author calls her diet not restrictive - excuse me, if you remove food groups from a diet, it becomes a restrictive diet. Also, the reasons for excluding some things were... bullsh*t: dairy is not allowed because lactose (not all dairy has lactose - like hard cheeses or kefir, just to name a few), grains are removed because gluten - but gluten-free grains are also removed (for no reason stated), soy is being hated on, legumes are removed because lectins (you get rid of lectins by cooking your legumes, I am sure nobody eats raw beans), and so on. So yeah, lots of nutritional mambo-jambo without any scientific evidence, just that the author feels better on this diet - I really thought that we got past the idea that what works for one individual, will work for everyone. Simply adding a disclaimer that you are not a dietician and that you should consult a medical professional, doesn't excuse you from making ridiculous claims.

And then we get to the recipes... 1/4 of the recipes in this book have pictures and in my book, this is inexcusable for a contemporary cookbook (sorry, not sorry, but it's not that hard to take pictures of food). The few pictures we had were pretty much the same colour - which might just showcase how boring the diet could be, but also might be the reason why we don't have that many pictures in the first place.

The actual recipes offer no nutritional details - which if you call yourself clean, you should, and I do not mean just calories. It also uses a lot of hard to find ingredients or expensive ingredients. This is also just a personal preference, but I like cookbooks that are affordable and available to everyone.

All in all, did not really enjoy this book.

Many of us eat keto or paleo (or other) due to health reasons; others because they want to just eat better. The author tells her story at the beginning of the book which is interesting. It's great to read personal success stories like this, especially in these troubling covid times. She also discusses what paleo actually is and why people choose this lifestyle (I am keto due to medical necessity so can relate). She then lists what foods to eat and what to avoid then delves into label reading, kitchen tools and FODMAP.

I like that some of these recipes are new to me. Though I often use crushed pork rinds as breading tonight will be the first time for pork chops (one of her recipes). The Greek Meatballs look mouthwatering. So do the Spaghetti Pie, Buffalo Chicken Soup, Banana Blondies and Banoffee Pie. Heck, all the recipes look great! Why am I typing this at lunchtime?!

Nutritional information for each recipe would be wonderful, though I know it can be variable and difficult. This book would be ideal for anyone paleo or keto, really, including beginners and experts. It does inspire. Many of the recipes would be easily adaptable to your needs/tastes, too, which I appreciate.

My sincere thank you to Quarto Publishing Group - Fair Winds and NetGalley for providing me with an ARC for this delicious book in exchange for an honest review. Much appreciated.

I was excited to discover the recipes of that book. I don't know much about paleo cooking but to me it seemed close to what I grew up with (basically a low carb diet, heavy on meats and veggies instead). The recipe in this book are really catered to family meals, simple and practical and can be done in almost any family kitchen. It also is carful to make sure most recipes are IBS friendly, which is a nice thing to know and be able to do when you know some fragile people are coming to eat.
The pictures are good, though there is only about 1 picture for every 3 recipe. The directions are clear. You will find all the classics from the chicken soup to the meatloaf and how to replace typical carbs like pasta with vegetable alternatives such as zucchini noodles, spaghetti squash, all kinds of potatoes or cauliflower rice... There are lots of neat ideas like the use of pecan nuts for lots of crusting, and I particularly liked the dessert section, as it offers choices while never using typical wheat flour. Sadly, I don't think this book was for me. I'm afraid that while I could see the value of this book for a beginning cook, there was nothing that wowed me and that I absolutely wanted to make. I would recommend it for someone leaving home and needing one of those first cookbooks to learn the basics of healthy home foods from.

I've been eating a gluten-free diet, by necessity, for around 10 years now and I'm always looking for clean gluten-free recipe ideas. Clean Paleo Comfort Food Cookbook: 100 Delicious Recipes That Nourish Body Soul is right up my alley. This time of year plus all of us with our stay-at-home isolation (close to the refrigerator) pounds we've packed on makes this clean eating cookbook more welcome than the author can ever know.

Much of the Paleo theory and ideas behind clean eating are not new to me but may be a welcome primer to those looking for a different way of nourishing their body. A lot of recipes are also pretty standard for my diet as of now but there are a few recipes that simply made my mouth water alternately with the savory (French Onion Soup with Meatballs) and the sweet (umm, hello Butternut Squash Pecan Crumble and Cashew Butter Swirl Brownies. Welcome to my recipe box. Yum!)

Definitely a great starter for those looking to get into the Paleo/Clean eating lifestyle without sacrificing taste and comfort.

This gave me a delicious introduction to the paleo diet! I am always trying to eat healthier but I have been following mostly low-carb dishes with protein and vegetables. But I am always looking for new and interesting recipes that will keep healthy eating fun.

I loved that this cookbook educated me on the paleo diet and even gave me a list of foods that are recommended as it allows me to customize the recipes in the book to my personal food preferences while sticking to my diet. I loved the options for sweets in this book.... something I feel I have to limit myself on but there were a variety of dessert recipes I could see myself trying.

Breakfast I find to be the hardest meal of the day to substitute healthy choices for because breakfast is a grab and go type of meal for me. But I loved both chocolate chip muffins and butter pecan granola something I could see myself making time and time again.

I liked the variety of dishes but also that they are all reminiscent of the types of foods you want to enjoy when it is cold out. I think this is a good introduction to people who want to eat healthier but don't want to quite give up all their comfort foods yet.

Also LOVED the food photos, so simple and elegant.

I don't eat only paleo but I try to eat as many clean, whole foods as possible - so I thought this book would be perfect to add new recipes into our rotation. If you are new to Paleo, I think that the beginning of the book gives a great introduction and helps explain to those who are unfamiliar and why people choose this lifestyle.

I wanted to make a few recipes before reviewing this book and I loved every single one of them! I can be a picky eater sometimes and I think these recipes were great and easy to follow, but also easily customizable.

Overall, I definitely recommend this book for all people trying to eat cleaner, not just those who are strictly paleo.

Clean Paleo Comfort Food by Jessica DeMay is a great introduction into the Paleo lifestyle. The recipes are fairly easy and sound quite good. I don’t know that I will be able to live a completely Paleo lifestyle but I will definitely start incorporating these recipes into my meals.
The cookbook is sectioned by courses, which is very nice. I prefer pictures for every recipe and wish this cookbook had those. It also doesn’t contain nutritional facts which is somewhat disappointing. The section on soups would probably be my favorite and I look forward to trying them soon.
I would recommend this cookbook to anyone new to Paleo, looking for simple, delicious recipes!

Thank you to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing for the opportunity to read this book

This is a well put together, and well-organized cookbook on the heath benefits of paleo. She gives her own personal story and offers a great starting point for going paleo. But these are great recipes for expert paleo enthusiast as well as beginners. Great recipes, most of them with photos, and most of them super reasonable to make. I love that it offers clean recipes for the introductory paleo cook so as not to be too intimidating. I admit that I have often run fast and far away from paleo recipes if they get too complicated, and I even love to cook. A recommended book for a keeper shelf for those interested in cooking clean paleo meals.

Clean Paleo Comfort Food Cookbook by Jessica DeMay was full of delicious paleo recipes (that also fit some other diets.)

I loved that there were a mix of recipes. Some were old favourites with a twist and some were completely original and new to me. The photos made everything so appetizing. I appreciated that the recipes were easy to follow and pretty simple.

If you are looking for some delicious, simple paleo food, I highly recommend Clean Paleo Comfort Food Cookbook.

I received a copy of this book through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

This book has a lot of recipes, but not a lot of pictures. I like to see what the finished recipe should look like in cook books so that's a bummer to not get to see them. This book has a variety of recipes that sound good. Some are time intensive and there's a lot of meat included but some of these do come pretty close to their non-paleo alternatives.

Overall it's a pretty straight forward cook book.

Great recipes using ingredients I already have in my kitchen. I've already picked out 4 recipes to try this weekend. I bought this book on sake for $5 and it looks like something I will use frequently!

The best thing about this book, is that most of the things here described are sweets and desserts, which is usually something I do not associate to Paleo, so that's a nice surprise!

La cosa migliore di questo libro é che la maggior parte delle ricette sono di dolci o desserts, che sono cose che di solito non associo alla dieta paleo, quindi una bella sorpresa!

THANKS NETGALLEY FOR THE PREVIEW!
