He has all the girls fighting for his attention, but he can’t take his eyes off me.
Evangeline
I may be good at art, but I fail big time when it comes to driving or dating. I’ve avoided both ever since my ex dumped me while I was recovering from a car accident. My ego and heart can only take so much bruising. But when my cousin dares me to face my fears, I decide to take on the challenge. Trading driving lessons in exchange for tutoring sessions sounds like the perfect plan.
Except now I have to spend all my free time with the one guy I try to avoid—the school flirt.
Max
After my parents’ sudden divorce, playing the field seems like a safer bet than commitment. The idea of spending time with one girl never crosses my mind ... until I meet Evangeline Evans. Not only because I need her help to pass precal, but also because I like who I am around her. She’s way smarter than me and more interesting than she gives herself credit for.
It’s my job to help her feel comfortable behind the wheel, but I really want her to feel safe in my arms.
Two dares. One bad reputation. And the perfect opportunity to fall in love.

Oh, such sweetness! These Edenvale Arts Academy young adult books keep getting better and better! This is book 3 in the series but can be read as a stand-alone. It was really nice to catch up with Liam and Ava from the second book and to get to know Max, Liam's buddy, better in this story. The characters are so lovable, the plot is cute and engaging, and the dialogue is fun and trendy. I wish there was an Edenvale Arts Academy for me to attend!
Max is a drama major who is the extroverted school heartthrob, always flirting with all the girls without settling for a relationship. He, of course, has a deep fear that makes him relationship-phobic but has a bigger problem with needing to pass precalculus to stay on track at school. Angel is a visual arts major, shy and introverted, who is also relationship-phobic for completely different reasons. I loved how these two polar opposites got intertwined in each other's spheres and how great they were together even though they resisted for a good while. Another fun, heart-warming happily-ever-after story that is great for young adults.. I can't wait for Angel's cousin Juliet's story that should be releasing next!
I received a copy of the book from the author and was under no obligation to post a positive review. All comments and opinions are solely my own.
I enjoyed this cute flirty book about over coming fears. Both Angel and Max have issues. Max may not recognize his at first since he has found a way to deal with his life. He avoids being hurt by being the class flirt. Girls love him and he loves the attention. Angel is the opposite. She likes her quiet life where she immerses herself in her art. She has no desire to be seen by the school flirt. Hey, he is good to look at but that’s about it. She can appreciate his beauty because she appreciates art. When she has to draw Max in class one day, things change. Max and Angel have a chance to help each other overcome the fears they both harbor and get to know the real person behind those fears.
Another fun story in this series. Angel is such a sweet shy girl, but with a backbone. I was really impressed with her. Max is quite the flirt and definitely the type I would steer clear from. Luckily we get to see a different side of him. It was fun to read Angel and Max's story and see the growth and change that came over them. They really are a cute couple. This book can be read as a stand alone, but I suggest starting the series at the beginning and if you really want a back story, read the Spark brothers series as well.
What a surprise I didn't know that Nolan was Max's brother. Well, stepbrother, and been saying I can't wait until Nolan gets his book. I see why Nolan's book is going to be last since Max is his stepbrother. Probably more friends are coming in before him. Hence, Nolan and Seth are best friends, and Max and Liam are best friends. Interesting!!
With that being said... I liked this book I wasn't disappointed at all. To know who the girl that Max chased in the book with Liam and Ava, which was Angel. It was interesting to know.
I was glad that he figures things out and stopped trying to be a player (well more so running from his feelings) Angel helped him with that and he helped Angel with her fears of driving. I think they worked well together. Not only did they work together. But even though they were opposites, they were meant to be.
Even with everything that they said to each other when it came to their feelings, you could tell both of them liked each other. Even Evan and Emma, the founders of the school, saw that in them, especially Emma. I was surprised how Seth never popped up in this book since Evan is his cousin. I'm trying to think was Ava the one that got adopted by them.
Was probably didn't I can't remember if it was this series or not!!! But I liked the fact that they both liked Angel and Max... and to also give Max a chance at the acting gig was great for him. I can't wait until I read the next book to this series about Juliet and Jaxson. I know it's about to be good and interesting!!!
While You Were Flirting is just a fun book to read. Angel and Max seem like an odd couple, but actually are just perfect for each other in more than the practical math tutoring for driving training exchange. They are able to help each other in deeper ways too. The over-the-top reactions of the other girls to Max adds a lot of humor to the book. There's a sweet ending for Max and Angel with just a tiny teaser for what I hope are the couple for the next book in the series. I enjoy Liwen Ho's writing style and look forward to reading more of her work. I received a complimentary copy. I chose to write a review and share my opinion of this entertaining romance.
I LOVED this book! I, along with Angel, was pretty skeptical of Max. Big ego, huge flirt, yuck. But I really enjoyed getting to know him! I especially loved how Max was drawn to Angel in a way he’d never been with any other girl. It was so sweet, watching the growth and development of both of them! Love, love, loved it! I’m so excited for this series to continue!
Oh how I loved this! Popular flirtatious guy falls for shy girl, a teen thing!! It’s so full of emotion, hope, it’s fun & heartwarming & so so sweet. Well written there are lessons to be learned by both teens and adults and once started you will not be able to put this down!
Once again this series delivers…. a good standalone book that doesn’t shy away from real life issues. There’s the pain children suffer when parents divorce. The insecurities it produces and how those insecurities form scars that turn into walls of protection.
Here we have Max, a guy who plays the field. A steady relationship is not in his vocabulary. His parents' divorce made sure of that. His player mentality is his way of hiding from fears of abandonment, of being left alone in life. . He saw the agony, the hurt, the pain, his dad suffered when his mom left. Max is determined that won’t happen to him. Max is two different people, he’s hard on the outside but soft on the inside. His outside flirtations are there for his protection. They are a shield for his insecurities.
Angel also has been hurt, both physically and mentally. She almost died in a car wreck. It took her a long time to heal. During that time her friends forgot all about her, and, the only boyfriend she ever had dumped her while she was in rehab. He didn’t like the scars left behind…. the scars on her body … scars that eventually healed. At least those on the outside healed, but not the ones on the inside. She became reclusive, almost invisible and shied away from any type of social gathering. Her best friend was Netflix.
It’s interesting to watch how Max and Angel help each other heal and to become whole again. It doesn’t happen overnight, it’s a journey to truths and revelations.
LIKES and WISHES:
Love the talk Max and his dad had about letting go and embracing life. Sharing his thoughts on love was perfect advice for Max but also for readers, young and old alike.
Would like to see how Angel’s ex deals with what he did. Teens do mean and questionable things, but they have to grow up eventually. Did he ever think about Angel? Did he ever see the devastation caused by his callous cruelty? Now that Angel is healed, in all ways ... physical, mental and emotional, does he ever pass her on the street and have regrets? Modern day verbiage will call it Karma, but that's just code for Reaping What You Sow.
This series continues to be perfect! While We Were Flirting is a wonderful read. I’m 30 years removed from high school but I still remember the experience. Liwen captures the world of high school so well. Max is a incurable flirt. He makes every girl feel good and hopeful but he never starts a relationship. Evangeline aka Angel, is shy, introspective and grade A, high achiever. She’d rather veg out on Netflix and popcorn than put herself out there with others. Sound familiar, alumni? Both of them have a reason for the way they are. Good reasons. Max, for all his bluster, is alarmed to feel a spark of attraction to Angel. Angel feels the same but doesn’t think it’s possible Max would be attracted to her. So they both act accordingly towards one another. Until they needed each other.
I just loved this story. Liwen takes a typical trope (the popular boy falls in love with the shy girl) and makes it special with great character depth and details. One detail that charmed me is when Angel’s dad finds his daughter crying after a devastating confrontation with Max. He hands her a tissue from his pocket and carefully rolls the other tissues back up to return to his pocket. You find out that Angel’s dad had picked up the habit of keeping tissues in his pocket four years before when his daughter was going through physical therapy after a devastating car accident. He always had a tissue for her to wipe her sweat and her tears. He kept up the habit. That little tidbit didn’t need to be in the book. Liwen could have explained the severity of Angel’s injuries in a more perfunctory manner. But this detail shows such emotion and texture that’s present throughout the story.
Max and Angel are absolutely darling together. Their path to an HEA is realistic with some cute embellishments along the way. If you’ve read the first two books in the series, keep reading. If you haven’t, I recommend starting at the beginning but you certainly don’t need to, to enjoy the story (but you should :-).
This story follows Max and Angel. Max is the school flirt, no way ready to settle down with any one girl. Angel is the smart, shy student who is not going to settle down with the school flirt. After meeting in Angel’s art class, Max realizes she isn’t the kind of girl who falls for his charms and gets intrigued. Angel is equally intrigued by the fact that he is taking notice of her. Angel’s friend dares her to either learn how to drive in a week or go to the Winter Formal and kiss Max. Angel doesn’t want to drive because she was in an accident that really damaged her in a way that she might not have been able to walk ever again. Max’s friend dares him to ask Angel to the Winter Formal. He can’t say no as it is a tradition to complete any dare given by the other.
I have no idea how Ms. Liwen does it. Her books are cute, trendy, and inspirational. Both Max and Angel grew through the novel and learned a lot. They made mistakes but also made up for them and finally ended up together. The story is devoid of mature scenes and language. The characters have a complete background with no loose ends. The book is super intriguing and captivated me in on the first page. Excited to read the next one!
I wrote this voluntary review in exchange for an ARC copy.
A sweet romance I enjoyed reading! Great if you want a feel-good story or a relaxing read.
Angel is an artist and Max is a flirtatious drama student and aspiring actor. Max and Angel first meet each other when Angel has to draw him as a model in art class. But things don't develop until he needs a maths tutor or else risk getting kicked out of school for failing a class. So in comes Angel who gets asked to help tutor him.
Both characters had developed personalities with their own back stories that made them easy to understand. I usually don't like switched 1st person perspective novels because sometimes it doesn't work so well (e.g. character voices sometimes aren't distinguishable enough between each other or guys end up sounding too feminine) but I didn't have those problems with this book.
It wasn't a complicated plot, but I expected as much and it didn't detract from my interest in the story. The writing flowed well too. Nothing bugged me, and I'm usually very picky so that's saying something.
Overall I'm very happy I picked up this book and read it. Sometimes I just want a simple cute romance to read and this hit the mark spot on for me. Now I might go snooping around the author's other books sometime for my next read :)
This is the story of Max, the ultra handsome, super charming, popular with the ladies, always flirting high school senior and Evangeline (Angel to her friends), a shy gifted artist who has no interest in being Max’ latest conquest. When Max is the model for Angel’s portrait class she is forced to look at him—really look at him—and she likes what she sees but there is something there in the expression in his eyes that makes her wonder if there is more to Max than he appears to be. Meanwhile Max, who is majoring in acting at their performing arts academy, has been playing a part in his real life for so long that he hardly knows how to be genuine anymore; Evangeline sees right through him and won’t settle for less than the real Max. I really loved this story and the characters in it and I wish we could have been given a “ten years later” view of Max and Angel. Highly recommend! I was entrusted a copy of this book by the author and this is my voluntary and honest review.
A sweet Young Adult novel. This is the first book by this author that I have read and I though it was really sweet. I liked how she brought us back to High School and helped us remember what it was like. I liked how the shy girl got the popular boy and I loved how they were able to show their real sides to each other. This was a really emotional book as well since you were reminded of how it felt to be in high school and to be so vulnerable and trying to find your place in the world. I did like this book and I would like to read the other books in this series.
I received a complimentary book from publishers, publicists, and or authors. A review was not required and all opinions and ideas expressed are my own.
This book captures all the angst common in young love. The will he, won't he kiss her and the can l really believe his pretty words. This sums up Max the school flirt and Evangeline (aka Angel) in a nutshell. Trouble is they are very hard to get to know underneath the shell they have both placed around their hearts. It take a teacher asking her to help tutor him for the first inkling to emerge of the person he really is deep down. She still doesn't trust him, because they run in different social circles, but she bargains with him to teach her to drive in one week!! The more time they spend together, the more they notice changes in each other. True love doesn't always run smoothly, but it is sometimes worth the trouble.
Like pretty much all the girls at Edenvale, my inner sixteen-year-old is totally crushing on Max. :D Having "met" him in previous books in the series, I was curious what his story was going to be like, and who would be the girl to capture his attention - and his heart.
It was so easy to fall in love with Angel (yep, Max, I totally get it!) and to root for her, feel her fears and her frustrations, but also swoon right along with her...
I loved seeing both Angel and Max work through some pretty serious issues - on their own, and together - and grow up quite a bit until they get their happy end.
I really enjoyed this book. Both of the main characters personalities had such depth. I loved that Evangeline had no idea how beautiful she truly is. Max sees her completely different from how she perceives herself. She believes that there is no way Max can like her.
Max is the most popular and the biggest flirt at school. He has all the girls attention, all except the one he wants. With all of his flirting and sweet taking he does to the girls he has never had a romantic relationship. His fear of commitment runs deep from experiences in his life.
This story and characters touched my heart. Maybe their vulnerability spoke to me.
This is my favorite book in the series. I liked how the characters had to face their fears and overcome them in order to move on and become a couple. I liked how Max was finally able with Angel's help to make peace with his past. I thought the scene with his father was so poignant to the story. I also enjoyed that Angel was able to see Max's beauty on the inside and learned to trust him. They both learned that with each other's support they could face and do hard things. I cannot wait to read the next book about Angel's cousin, Juliet and Jaxson. I received an advance copy of this book and I willingly chose to write an honest review.
I really enjoyed this book about the flirt who refuses to settle for dating one girl and the shy girl with mega anxiety after her bad car crash. Their friends challenge them to dares, his was to ask her to the winter formal (she said NO!) and hers was to drive to school and back home within a week or kiss the flirt under mistletoe at the winter formal. Then the precal teacher got involved and pleaded for her to tutor him. The squiggly line from point A to point B in this novel was really great. I highly recommend this book. So far, it’s my favorite from the series.
This clean high school romance was absolutely delightful! The main characters were extremely likable, and it was fun reading from dual points of view as their relationship progressed, and being inside their heads as they faced and overcame their insecurities. The author is very talented at storytelling, and I will look forward to reading about more colorful characters at Edenvale in future episodes. I received an advanced copy of this book from the author, and am voluntarily giving my honest review.
When I first started this story I was not too crazy about Max and felt bad for Evangeline. But in order for the story to come together we have to see Max at his worst, an insufferable flirt and the sensitive Evangeline. When they share things with each that they typically don't share with others things seem to be great. But silly Max just can't seem to commit and now he may lose the only girl who truly understands him. A grand gesture is what it will take to get Evangeline back. I received a complimentary copy and I am voluntarily reviewing.
Such a fun read! To be honest, ya romance novels are not my go to choice of reading material. I’m not sure why since I’ve been married to my hs sweetheart for 33 years.😍 But this book was good. So much so that I want to read the next one in the series AND the previous books. I also like how the author pulled in characters from another series. It was sweet and clean and believable and I’m finding this author keeps getting better and better. I was given an advance copy and I’m so glad. I will absolutely purchase the rest of the series.
Wonderful and Clean Young Adult Romance In this episode of the series, two of the teenagers overcome serious fears to open themselves to romance. This book stands alone well, but you will want to go back and read the other episodes. The book is very realistic and is well written. It will hold the interest of any age of reader. I have read other books by this author and have enjoyed them all. This book exhibits the fine quality I have come to expect. I received this ARC book for free from the author and this is my honest opinion.
This is actually the second time I read this book. The first time was part of a collection, and I hadn't read the first 2 books in the series. While this book is great as a standalone, it is even better knowing who the other people in the story are. Max is a returning character, and it is so nice to see him get more depth and reasons for who is and becomes. Angel is a new character as she has been hiding in the back of rooms and is in a different grade than the other characters, but her story is relatable. It is wonderful how they come together to overcome their fears.
I received an ARC of While You Were Flirting from the author and I'm voluntary leaving my honest review
I didn't know if i was gonna like Max's story because i didn't care for him much in book 1 and 2 of this series but Ms.Liwen Y. Ho gave Max his redemption story because I fell for him just like Angel did.
This story is fun to read and will give give you all the feels of young love. I couldn't stop reading it.
I think many readers can identify with falling for the Blush-inducing smile of that one guy in high school, the guy who smiled that way at everyone. The moments captured in these books bring back the sweet butterflies of young crushes and the real world hardships that even teenagers have to face. Max and Angel are so sweet and swoons. Two thumbs up! I received an ARC of this book, and I am leaving a voluntary review.
Most people have had something happen in their life that has hurt them. Their reactions to those events are all different. So it’s not surprising that Max and Evangeline have hurts to overcome. Those hurts get in their way when trying to build a relationship. Liwen Ho did an excellent job of building the drama and keeping me excited to find out how Max and Angel finally work things out.
This is my favorite book in the series so far! It felt a lot deeper than the first two (which were good, but this is even better). Ho does a great job illustrating why people may act shy or be the life of the party, depending on things that have happened in his/her past. I liked the interactions between the two main characters. I’m looking forward to the next one!
This is an enjoyable YA story with strong characters in Max,high school romeo and Evangeline the shy artist. The author does a great job developing their relationship , bringing them closer as they overcome their issues. It's well written, moves fluidly and is a sweet romance.
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book. All opinions in this review are my own and freely given.
A very cute story about 2 kids with problems only each other can help with. She has to get over her fear of driving and he needs to pass precal. The language was easy to follow and the storyline was interesting. The characters are fun and I did not want to put this book down. Book works as a single read. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.
This is the first book in this series I've read. It certainly is typical of teenage love with Evangeline & Max not understanding each other & not believing they like each other. It is good in that when they need something the other can help with, they help each other. I received an ARC. This is my voluntary opinion.
