‘“Wouldn’t sex be the main course?”
“I prefer to think of the meal as a whole event. Kissing is the amuse bouche to entice our palate.” He proves his point with a nip to my bottom lip.
“And what’s dessert?”
“The sweetness that follows everything else, made more enjoyable by the delicious satisfaction of the previous dishes.”’
Stranger Ranger is a truly beautiful, slow-burning, oddball-celebrating, laugh-out-loud romantic comedy, written with tremendous heart, punctuated with impressive comical timing from both hero and heroine.
I don’t know what it is about quirky, off-beat protagonists but they never fail to keep me entertained, bewitched and captivated. Maybe it’s a vanity thing and I see a lot of myself in them? Whatever it is, Stranger Ranger has an abundance of that character charm and plot appeal. There isn’t some overblown storyline, hyped up and exaggerated so we lose all sense of realism, it’s character driven, full of emotion, good intentions and some wonderful descriptive language, that is able to transport the reader seamlessly in amongst the romance and mishaps, the trees and the wildlife, showcasing The great Smoky mountains, the people that call the area home.
Odin Hill is a complicated and very romantic hero. He’s more than one thing. He’s a little strange, he’s sensitive but tough, brooding yet sweet, he’s lonely and a little sad and defensive but the conglomeration of all those things makes him into one mesmerising and seductive hero. Add in the protective and nurturing elements within him and you possibly have the most perfect Thor-like man on your hands. His pet pig just adds another key ingredient to love about him. Odin is super sexy and unique without really trying. He’s just himself and that is the most attractive thing of all about him.
I loved Daphne. I thought she was incredible. I would have liked to know so much more about her upbringing, that kind of thing fascinates me on a whole other level but I really admired her strength, her convictions, her innate kindness and loyalty. She was equally as mesmerising as Odin, with a cute naivety and sweetness underneath her badass park Ranger exterior. A stickler for rules and structure she also is wonderfully funny and a little bit lost herself. Together, she and Odin make a seriously beautiful couple.
Stranger Ranger is very romantic, incredibly funny and packed with some terrific Green Valley quirk. If you’re looking for a lovely slow-burn love story, with plenty of laughs and heat and heart, then you’ll definitely want to add this book to your list.
