Forensic anthropologist Maggie Turner happily works as an assistant professor at her local university and lives a quiet life near campus. That is until Jackson Lockhart enters her classroom. Then a cyclone of emotions erupt as she remembers the tragedy that once tore them apart. She’s often thought of him, but they’d agreed never to see each other again and so far they’d kept their promise. But today…Jackson has a good reason for breaking his promise. Maggie’s life depends on it.
Will it now bring them back together?
In an ongoing investigation, Jackson has learned that university officials secretly videoed her classroom in a study on attendance. The recorder was supposed to run only during the class session, but it malfunctioned and recorded an entire week, which includes a shocking murder that has now put Maggie’s life in danger. Can Jackson unravel the lies surrounding this incident before the killer unleashes his fury on Maggie and takes her life?

She writes romantic suspense novels that are clean with inspiring messages of faith. Readers love her series for the well-drawn characters and edge-of-your-seat action. She graduated from the FBI and local police citizen academies, so her research is spot-on and her characters are real.

I'm totally addicted to this series now and really love that it comes in audible editions since the books are no longer available in paperback on Book Depository. Reading...er...listening...to one every week or so is giving me a greater appreciation for those of you who like to wait until a series is completed before diving in....but I'm still not patient enough to do that with every series out there! :-)
While Cold Fury is the third book in the Cold Harbor series, it can be read as a standalone. Sleeman does a super job of introducing the Blackwell Tactical members. Team building is something this author really excels at and I love the way she writes the camaraderie and banter. Great scenes that showcase the heart of these amazing men and women and makes each one lifetime friends material.
But -- be prepared to have your heart skewered with Jackson and Maggie's story. Their history is so devastating! They are both still overwhelmed by their past -- burdened to the point of not being able to let it go.Though they are both successful in their chosen careers, they've closed themselves off from living life to the fullest. Their conversations are insightful and the way they grow in their faith is inspiring.
"God always gets things right and when we worry or question Him it's like we think He's gotten it wrong." -- "We thank Him for the good things and blame Him for the bad. God is consistent so we're just tormenting ourselves by fluctuating as circumstances change." (sorry I don't have page references, but I was listening to the audbile version.)
And the suspense is action-packed and danger inducing! Absolutely love the details Sleeman has added to the various technical aspects of the story -- from the forensics to the police procedural to the armed forces tactics the team use in their operations -- all fascinating and add authenticity to the story.
I'm three books down with four more to go before I finish the series. I'm excited to get back to Cold Harbor and thrilled that I don't have to wait long to do so. I have Cold Case in my sight-lines -- Eryn's story -- double woot!!!!
'Our sniper will sever your brainstem, and you won't have a chance to even flinch, much less get off a shot.'
Susan Sleeman once again proves her mettle as a suspense writer with this third installment in her Cold Harbor series, featuring the Blackwell Tactical team, a group of men and women who fight crime the hard way.
She has crafted super believable characters with suspense that is practically off the charts, keeping the reader hanging until the end, which she delivers swift and hard. I am a forever fan! And there are more books in this series! Hooray!
*I was given a complimentary copy of this book and my opinion stated here are honest and entirely my own.
The Blackwell Tactical team is back and better than ever. When Maggie Turner is thrust back into Jackson Lockhart’s life, he’s determined to keep her alive—and to keep his distance. The history—and shared loss—between Maggie and Jackson reaches deep in both of them, and in Cold Fury, author Susan Sleeman touches on the topic of grief amidst the hunt for a murderer. With plenty of unanswered questions and creeping danger, Jackson and his team must work to solve the case. But there may be more to it than they ever expected. Sleeman is at the top of her romantic suspense game with the latest white-knuckling, keep-you-guessing, high octane installment in the Cold Harbor series.

Six years ago heart-break caused Jackson and Maggie to agree to never see each other again. But when Maggie's life is in danger Jackson, who is now working for Blackwell Tactical, insists on taking lead in the case and protecting Maggie. With their past will Jackson be able to maintain a professional demeanor or will his feelings for Maggie deter him from doing the best job possible to keep her safe? Why is Maggie the target of someone's fury and how will she ever survive being this close to Jackson once again?
I absolutely love the Blackwell Tactical team! They care for each other as a family and they also want to see each team member excel at their expertise. They have each others' back whether it be in danger or in their relationships. Jackson and Maggie have a past, there is no doubt about that with the team. But what that past is, none of them know. I love the way that Alex, another team mate, always has something funny to say to Jackson to try and get him to confess his attraction for Maggie. He made me laugh and I hope that we get to see his story soon. Cold Fury was exciting and kept me on the edge of my seat. I couldn't put it down and stayed up way to late to finish it up. I raced through it and loved every minute of it! I'm very much looking forward to reading the next book in the series. If you are a suspense/romance fan like I am then you will definitely want to pick this series up, I guarantee you will not want to put them down until you finish every last exciting page!
Once again, the main focus is on one of the Blackwell Tactical military men. This time Jackson Lockhart is featured. Maggie Turner is happily working as an assistant professor at the Criminal Justice Department when Jackson breaks into her classroom unexpectedly. They had promised to never seen one another again, but now Maggie's life depends upon it. In a videotape, Maggie is seen walking by a man who is now suspected of murder; and if he learns of it, will he kill again.
Fast paced, action filled as 2 people who once were completely devoted to one another can find a connection again or will murder take place first.
I am SOOO loving this series and am so glad I have all of them to read! I think the thing I liked most about this book, is the author dealt with a very difficult subject. Don't want to give too much away in the review since that piece isn't on the back cover.
But it is safe to say it's a situation that too many couples have faced and it's torn them apart. I love how Susan digs into the emotional baggage that comes with this type of hurt.
This has been an amazing series and this addition only adds to that! I love the men and the lone woman of Blackwell Tactical! They are former law enforcement or military who have had an injury that is significant enough to keep them from returning to their job but still able to perform the job they love on a civilian level. In this book, Blackwell is tasked with solving a murder of a college student. When video is reviewed on the college campus, it is discovered that the murderer brushed up against a teacher and that teacher was Jackson's (a member of Blackwell) former fiancé, Maggie! An incident happened between Jackson and Maggie six years prior that had them separating and vowing to never see each other or speak to each other again. Now that it is determined that Maggie is in grave danger, Jackson is put as the team leader for this mission. Imagine Maggie's surprise when she sees Jackson again? The feelings for both of them come back almost instantaneously! As the case moves on and danger is around every corner, Maggie and Jackson are forced to speak about "the incident" and try to resolve their feelings while a murderer chases them and the team. Susan Sleeman KNOWS how to write riveting suspense! It comes on every page! The reader has a hard time putting down one of her books! The characters come alive because she writes such great, real people that could be your friends, your neighbors, your family! I loved this book! It takes such twists and turns that you are always left with "what will happen next?" Even if you haven't read the other books in the series, you can easily read this book. The other characters are "explained" in each book! Blackwell Tactical is such a great "family" and I can't wait to find out who is next! I highly recommend this one first though!!!
My review today is on the thriller, Cold Fury. This is the third book in the Cold Harbor Series. I really enjoyed this book. Every time I read one of Susan's books I think this is the best one she's written and this is no different. It is well written, action packed, and you will not be able to put it down. It is excellent!
Former Green Beret Jackson Lockhart is a member of the Blackwell Tactical Unit. Even though he considers the team members as his family he has never shared about his engagement and the tragedy that changed his life. He has a history with Maggie and when he sees a video that shows she saw a killer and her life is endangered he knows he has to be the one to protect her whether she will accept his help or not. He has failed this woman once he would not fail her again. Can he keep his feelings out of the picture? If his boss finds out how much he still loves her he will take him off the case.
Maggie Turner is a forensic anthropologist. She teaches at a small college and volunteers to help find closure for those who are involved in disasters such as the forest fire that just destroy so many homes. She is working on site when she is attacked by a man telling her he will not go to prison for killing a man. The he proceeds to try to strangle her. She is rescued by the long lost love of her life. They had agreed never to see each other again. What was he doing here? Why is this man trying to kill her?
A journey of survival of two people that were meant to be together but moved to fast and missed God best. Now they are struggling to find a killer and stay alive; both want a future together but there was too much hurt in their past. BUT GOD has a plan for these two, a plan for good and not for evil. God has a plan for you too. Did you ever move out before you knew God plan? Go back to God repent and watch Him turn your life around.
Cold Fury, book three in Susan Sleeman's Cold Harbor series, follows forensic anthropologist Maggie Turner and Blackwell Security Specialist Jackson Lockhart as they attempt to find a murderer before he kills the only witness to his crimes.
When Maggie unwittingly bumps into a murderer, an action captured in video, Jackson recognizes he must protect the woman he use to love. Perhaps still loves. If only their lives hadn't been torn apart so many years ago by a tragic accident.
Maggie realizes she needs protection, but hesitates as the flood of emotions at seeing Jackson again nearly overwhelms her. They'd sworn never to see each other again, yet here he was to keep her safe.
During each twist and turn of the investigation, Jackson and Maggie battle their feelings for each other and their feelings about the past. Will they be able to overcome their hurdles or will the murderer keep them apart forever.
I always enjoy Susan Sleeman's books and Cold Fury kept me reading until the end. Though, unusually, the late middle lagged as Maggie and Jackson thought they caught the bad guy, but still couldn't resolve their personal dilemma.
At times emotional due to Maggie and Jackson's loss and other times funny because of the banter between the team members, I love revisiting the Blackwell team and their various adventures. Hoping you do, too.

"The screams tore through his body. Maggie. He was too late, and she was in trouble."
A heart-wrenching tragedy had driven them apart. It had been six years since Jackson Lockhart had laid eyes on Maggie Turner, but it didn't matter. Her life was in danger and Jackson was determined to protect her, although it seemed that his timely arrival had been a minute too late; a dark figure had his hands around Maggie's neck.
Maggie. Once upon a time, she had been his Maggie. But they had promised to go their separate ways, and separate ways they had gone. Jackson, back to his Special Forces unit and Maggie pursuing her career as a college professor and forensic anthropologist. Now in his role as an operative in Blackwell Tactical, their current contract and Maggie's safety had intersected; had God seen fit to bring them back together under these kinds of circumstances, where Jackson could "be there" for Maggie when she needed him most?
" . . . you never get used to losing someone you love so deeply . . . Memories will come flooding back at the oddest times, and you have to continually remember that God will work it all out for good. . . . God always gets it right. When we worry or question Him, it's like we think He's gotten it wrong."
This story unpacks so many burdens of the heart. Yes, there's a race to the finish line of a complicated criminal case, but there's also a well-spring of spiritual truth that every reader will find mutually convicting and uplifting. Who doesn't need to be reminded that God is good . . . . . all the time. . . . God is good.
This talented author once again manages to give us a story that is not only engaging, but also has a very complex plot. We get a chance to meet up again with the Blackwell Tactical group. A group made up of f courageous former military individuals who due to injuries had to give up their military service but have found a calling in another form. This time it’s Jackson Lockhart’s story an that of his former fiancee, Maggie Turner. They suffered a terrible loss six years ago and promised to never meet again. But fate has them meeting up again when Maggie, now a forensic anthropologist, is in danger. One of her students at the college she teaches, has been murdered and she might have seen the murderer. Blackwell has been hired to find out who killed the student and Jackson is the lead investigator. From the moment they reunite, you feel their devastating, longing , and sadness. They both have questioned God’s reasons for what happened to them and their faith has suffered. While the suspense, whodonit, etc keeps you guessing and on the edge of your seat, it’s the complexity of these individuals that really drew me into the story. Faith is questioned, what ifs are always in their minds, and feelings of guilt might hamper a future with happiness. Another winner in this wonderful series. Can’t wait to see what else Ms Sleeman has in store for us. I was gifted a copy of book. The opinions expressed are solely my own.
This is the third in a series and it sure does take off with a bang. I love how the author has developed a series that follows a group of people and their lives. Each story is packed with action and I love getting to know the team members better.
Maggie is a very smart woman who has had to overcome a great loss in her life. Her past comes back to greet her in a way that will impact her thinking and safety. I enjoyed getting to know Jackson and how his life intersected with Maggie's. What I really enjoyed was reading about computers and hacking. I'm somewhat of a geek and find programming intriguing. The author does a great job of giving details about how computers can be hacked and the danger it can cause.
Maggie is in danger when she happens upon a crime. Now she must rely on Jackson and the Blackwell Tactical Team to keep her safe. There are many twists in the story that keeps readers engrossed. I loved the unexpected chemistry between Maggie and Jackson, but I'm not sure she has forgiven him for the past. Will she be able to trust him as he risks his life to find out who is after her? Don't miss this story filled with intrigue and danger. I did like the theme in the book of forgiveness and trust. You will have to read for yourself what happens as the team takes on a dangerous cat and mouse game that will have you turning pages as fast as you can.
I received a copy of this book from the author. The review is my own opinion.
It was wonderful to return to visit the team at Blackwell Tactical. I loved getting a look at how life is progressing for the main characters from the first two book in the series. In this story though Jackson Lockhart steps into the spotlight. His past is revealed along with some things that helped form his character. All of the characters in this book are very well developed and presented in a way that I can just picture them in my mind’s eye while reading.
It was great getting to know Maggie, Jackson’s lost love. They are both holding deep heartache from a tragedy that tore them apart. I thoroughly enjoyed the emotional journey that they each took. They had to learn how to trust God with their pain and move past it.
The plot for this book is fantastic. It is filled with lots of twists and turns. I was fascinated by the details given about the tactical ops the team carried out.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author. I have chosen to write this review to express my personal opinion.

Each book in the COLD HARBOR series keeps getting better and better. Filled with fast paced action, buried secrets, and not one but two mysteries this is a story you will not want to put down. I enjoyed once again catching up with the members of the Blackwell Tactical team, but one complaint is that Coop and Kiera were hardly in this story at all. Yes, I realize that their story was in the last book, but I still would have liked to have seen them more in this book than we did. I love how the entire team works together and how they treat each other like family. Alex is a riot and is constantly on Jackson's back about his relationship with Maggie...this is exactly how brothers would treat each other. One of my favorite things about this entire series is the fact that every one of the team members has some sort of injury that ended their careers. Instead of letting their injuries totally destroy them, they have found a purpose and duty with the Blackwell Tactical team. I love how Susan Sleeman has written these characters. They are not your typical heroes and heroines, and that makes them even more lovable. I cannot wait to read the other books in this fascinating series.
I received a complementary copy of this book from the author in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own.
Cold Fury (Cold Harbor Book #3) is chilling from start to finish! Sleeman doesn’t disappoint with this latest installment in the series. Maggie Turner is an Assistant Professor of Anthropology at her local college but her real passion is being a Forensic Pathologist. She doesn’t care to be around death and dying but she wants to bring peace and closure to families. Maggie’s normal life has suddenly turned upside down when she unexpectedly witnesses a murderer running away from his victim. Ironically, she didn’t even know she saw him! Blackwell Tactical has been hired to work on the case. Team Member Jackson Lockhart takes this case personally as he and Maggie were once madly in love. This is a story of a consuming personal relationship that is stretched to the breaking point because of internal spiritual conflicts, old wounds and heartaches, not being able to forgive oneself, outside pressures, continual death threats and trying to decide what to do about this strong sense of love that they both still feel. Intense!! I was provided an ARC of this book by the author. The opinions expressed here are completely my own and without influence.
Cold Fury, the Cold Harbor series book #3, was as amazing as the first two. So amazing that I want to read book #4 already, but it's not quite out yet. These books are realistic, dealing with real life issues in an entertaining, suspenseful, yet with a hint of romance way. I love how true to life the characters are. I can see myself in them; yet, I'm not nearly as brave. It takes a special person to be highly trained like these characters, yet the author gives them vulnerabilities and imperfections to keep them believable and real. I feel as though I'm a part of the team just from reading about them. I can't wait to read more about the other members of the team that we've been introduced to. The author is very knowledgeable about the topics she writes about – things that readers need to be aware of but things we don't normally think about. This book in particular got me thinking about the safety of the world we live in. These books are entertaining, suspenseful, high energy and "can't put them down" action. I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author but was under no obligation to review it. All opinions in this review are strictly my own.
This is book three in the Cold Harbor series, however it is a stand alone book. There are characters that you meet in all the books so you miss some of the history, but you will understand what is going on. I would recommend you reading them all in order though because they are all great books.
Maggie Turner has a unique job and is as happy as she can be living it. Yet when her handsome ex-boyfriend, Jackson Lockhart, comes smashing into her world, she is not sure she is up to the challenges that will follow.
Jackson Lockhart is a handsome complicated man who works with the Blackwell Tactical team, that the series centers around. When he learns Maggie is in need of protection he is willing to risk everything to help her.
This book is full of mystery, suspense, some twit and turns and of course romance. I love the writing style of Sleeman, she always keeps me interested. Sometimes you think you have it all figured out then something changes. I always look forward to the next book in her series, to catch up with old characters and learn more about new ones.
Wow!! This book was very riveting, fast paced, and exciting! This is the first book I’ve read in this series so I definitely plan on going back and reading books 1 and 2 of the Cold Harbor series. The characters from book 1 and 2 were mentioned in this book but every book can be read as a stand alone.
I really liked the team unity, protectiveness and loyalty to each other. I also really liked the main characters Maggie and Jackson. After parting ways after a terrible tragic accident, they are brought back together so Jackson can protect Maggie against a killer who is targeting her. They have great chemistry and trust and work together really well in this book.
Lots of intense action, drama, romance, forgiveness and faith. Clean, christian fiction-highly recommend if you want a thrilling, edge of your seat, suspense!
I received a copy of this e-book complimentary for blog and social media review. All opinions are my own.
If you enjoy nonstop action, intrigue, and suspense with some romance thrown in for extra measure, you’ll like Cold Fury by Susan Sleeman. Creating realistic, flawed, but engaging characters is one of Sleeman’s strengths along with her obvious research skills. This story drew me quickly and held my attention until the end. Jackson and Maggie had baggage from a shared history but were still drawn to each other when a crisis occurred and Maggie needed Jackson’s protection. I liked the thread of forgiveness that ran through the story and the hope and trust that was developed between them. This can be a stand-alone book, although it is part of a series. It’s fun to see appearances of characters from some of the other books in this story. For clean Christian suspense that will keep you reading late into the night, Susan Sleeman is a go-to author. I’m looking forward to the next book in this series.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy. All opinions are my own.
"Cold Fury" is a Christian romantic suspense. Though a part of a series, this worked as a standalone. Maggie's working on identifying human remains after a wildfire when they come across a murder victim. Jackson's team is working on solving the murder of one of Maggie's students when they discover that Maggie actually saw the murderer. They rush to protect her until they can solve the case, but she insists on working her own case, too.
The suspense was created by constant attacks on Maggie. Jackson and Maggie had a relationship in the past, but Jackson wasn't ready to commit to marriage and a family. Then tragedy struck, both blamed themselves, and they figured there was too much hurt between them to heal the relationship. But things have changed with time, so they explored if there was a possible future together.
There was no sex or bad language. Overall, I'd recommend this suspenseful mystery.
Cold Fury by Susan Sleeman is the third installment in the Cold Harbor series. Here, we find the story of Jackson Lockhart, a member of Blackwell Tactical. He is on a mission to find a killer and to keep his ex-fiancé alive. Maggie is a forensic anthropologist and an assistant professor at the local university. Unknowingly she may have ran into the killer right after the murder. With Maggie and Jackson’s past coming back to haunt them the tension runs high. I loved how Ms. Sleeman worked to show us the struggle of forgiveness, not just forgiving themselves but each other. Sometimes tragedy pushes one away from or closer to God. When they both realized that God hadn’t forsaken them but had been there all the time they were able to move forward in their lives; knowing that God was in control. The action in this story was top-notch, non-stop!
I received this e-book from the author in exchange for my honest review.
3.5 stars I haven’t really been a fan of Jackson in the last books and so I wasn’t sure what I’d think of his book. I definitely understand him more but I didn’t warm to him like I usually do to characters.
The other thing that was odd was that the drama didn’t really seem to connect. I can’t say too much but I’m used to things being more connected to our characters. It’s almost like the suspense had to be there but the story is really about pain, loss, healing, and forgiveness after loss. This was more of a character growth story than a suspense story. Which is not a problem or bad in any way.
It’s funny because I’m a huge fan of friendship reconciliations in stories but second chance romances are harder for me. I think part of it is when the couple parted badly. I struggle to see them getting over it so easily. And man, what a last these two have to get over. That’s some intense pain.
Sometimes I get frustrated at characters stubborn refusal to accept comfort or hope or let go of things but then it hits me that I do the same exact things so I can’t get too mad at them :)
There isn’t anything wrong with this book, it had really good parts, but it just didn’t grab me the way the others did. Maybe I’m just reading too many of these kinds of books right now. I don’t know.
This is another great story about the Blackwell Tactical Team members! These characters feel very real to me, especially when we get to dive deep into the heart of another tough warrior. Jackson and Maggie had a traumatic experience that ended their close relationship six years prior, and now a murderer who is after Maggie forces Jackson to enter her life again. Not only is the tension of finding the elusive criminal increasingly stressful, it constantly triggers the old wounds between them. There is no simple happy ending--they have to work extremely hard both to catch the physical killer and to deal with the killer of their souls so they can finally live in freedom again. The ending makes it all worth it! (I am so eager to read the next book in this series!!)
Another amazing addition to the Cold Harbor Series! Susan Sleeman’s writing draws you right into the lives of her characters and allows you to feel you are right there with them!
This book is about Jackson one of the Blackwell Tactical Team. The team is hired to find a killer. He finds out that Maggie his ex Fiancé actually saw the killer and immediately feels the need to protect her. Maggie is an Assistant Professor for the Criminal Justice Dept at a college. Things go into overdrive as someone seems to not want Maggie to talk… then there is the mystery of why Maggie and Jackson aren’t together anymore!
*”I received a complimentary copy of this book and was under no obligation to post a favorable review.”
Jackson and Maggie's story is not one I will soon forget. As a Blackwell Tactical operator Jackson can barely hold himself back when he discovered the woman he once loved, Maggie, is in the midst of an investigation they've been hired to solve. He is chomping at the bit to get the bird in the air and rush to her side to ensure her safety. Sleeman does a good job of showing the tough military side of these heroes while also uncovering their not so tough sides that battle with the same faith struggles many regular civilians face. I enjoy the layers she gives her characters and how she shows things just don't always go the way you've planned. I'm really enjoying this series but Cold Fury is definitely my favorite so far.
Many plot are woven into this third book,of Cold Harbor series. A murder of a student who took a class from Maggie, is that the connection of why the killer is after her. Learning about hacking into computers, and how they can get controlled of a car, was something scary. As the Blackwell Tacktical come to protect her, they are trying to uncover the why, the answer isn’t coming. Yet, the killer is determined. Amidst the twist, is the side of grief, that Maggie and Jackson share, from five years before, a little too much, of going over and over it, I thought. This is another page turner, and will definitely kept readers reading, and looking for more in the series.
Jackson Lockhart and Maggie Turner had a past together. But, that didn't mean the current dangerous situation Maggie faced was going to deter him from protecting her. Murders have implied that Maggie is in danger, however, she's refusing to stop living. Things continue to happen around Jackson's bubble of protection. However, as an Assistant Professor at the nearby college, she refuses to allow the life she's built without Jackson to crumble. Whatever danger she faces, Maggie's heart needs to choose wisely, and to follow her faith, as well as her heart!! I give this story 4 out of 5 stars. It's an easy, well-written suspenseful read!!
An exciting story. Maggie Turner is an assistant professor in the Criminal Justice Department at a campus nearby and works freelance as a forensic anthropologist. Then Jackson Lockhart comes back into her life. He has discovered that her life is in danger. Will Jackson be able to protect her and his heart? Will they be able to find out who is trying to kill Maggie before it is too late? Can they work out the issues between them?
Maggie and Jackson vowed six years ago to never see each other again, but when she is in danger he goes to her rescue and they realize there are feelings there they need to work through. She is working on a burn site looking for skeletal remains to identify the victims and finds a murder victim. Lots of action and they think they have the person that tried to kill Maggie only to find out they don't. That leads to another good chase and rescue. Good book all around .
