Stoneheart

Rate this book
A heart of gold for a heart of stone.

As a cop, my motives are clear: uphold the law, preserve justice, and protect innocent lives, but when you throw gargoyles into the mix, all bets are off. Add in grieving your past mistakes, and it’s nearly impossible.
I should’ve known better than to find solace in the arms of Damien Viridios, an Emerald gargoyle known for philanthropy and his huge… helicopter.
Sure, he showed me a good time. Then he cut out my heart and replaced it with a chunk of living stone, making me a gargoyle, too. Worst. Hook-up. Ever.
Now my skin is almost bullet-proof and I can lift a car overhead, but there’s a huge target painted on my back. That’s the last Ruby stoneheart of House Kyrillian beating in my chest, and one of the gargoyle Orders wants to crush out its magic. Permanently.
Gio Onyarai, an Onyx bodyguard assigned to me by Damien, is sworn to defend my life, but it’s impossible to get anything done while he’s taking over my apartment in his birthday suit; my partner on the force, Sawyer Hawkins, blames himself for my new inhuman heart, refusing to let go of the mortal I once was.
I never asked to be made a gargoyle, but now that I have a stoneheart of my own, I’ll do anything to defend it from those who want to destroy it… I’m just not sure if I can stop these three from stealing it.

Stoneheart is a fast-burn standalone reverse harem romance, with plenty of steam, action, a strong heroine, and a guaranteed HEA where she doesn’t have to choose.

I liked it, but the FMC's attitudes flip-flopped a bit too much for me; her character didn't feel consistent throughout. There were also details I would have hoped would be explained further at the end, but they weren't. Likewise, I didn't particularly care for the format of the story with jumping backwards and forwards in time. Sometimes that felt natural - she was flashing back in a moment of panic - but others it really didn't seem to add to the story at that particular point. I would still read follow-up stories in this world, though, as the authors clearly set that up at the end.

The MC is a cop with... well she’s racist, we see the way the world is and how she really fears the gargoyles but a flashback towards the end of the book would have been better in the first third and earned her a bit of understanding from the reader. She is somehow still a decent human being who’s in an abusive relationship. After she gets out of that situation she then gets violated by a gargoyle that she sleeps with despite feeling the way she does about ‘pebbles’ which is a derogatory word for gargoyle. She forgives him for the home surgery, quite quickly without much conversation, and carries on making some unbelievably daft decisions that gets her in trouble and furthers the plot. I just lost any sympathy for her. Her motivation twists and there’s just no logic to it. There are some interesting side characters, and the men were likeable but there doesn’t seem to be a series in the making. I get the feeling the next one would have been better if her other books are anything to go by.

I just couldn’t go any further. I already feel like this book should be over. Everything happened pretty much immediately. She slept with two of the guys already and is saying I love you to one of them. She is already a gargoyle, and there is so much plot development I don’t know what to do. I would also like to add in that I had no idea that this was an RH or if it will turn into one so I was thoroughly surprised with the multiple lovers.

Thank god i finally finished a book that healed my reading rut & helped push the icky feeling of previous shit books out of my system. Now i might be able to actually open a new book with excitement instead of trepidation. 😍😍😍 i love this world. I love gargoyles in general and this one lived up to and even surpassed the gargoyle trope/vibes and even though the next book seems to be focusing on a new set of romantic characters making this story standalone im glad the series in world is continuing and have a feeling well be seeing the og characters and im soooo sooo glad that crystal babies are a thing i assumed since it wasnt addressed til the very end that either they couldnt with a stone heart OR it was a plot device and wed find out during the book that she was pregnant and theyd address it at that point and clarify etc. Im praying to the gargoyle gods that i see some cutie babies in the next book!!! 💖💖💖

"Just because it didn't penetrate my skin didn't mean taking a bullet to the nip didn't hurt."

Well, this was...a story I didn't know I needed, much less enjoy. All I knew about gargoyles was from Disney's version of the Hunchback of Notre Dame, lol. And I've read all other manner of fantasy/PNR/UF romance, but none with gargoyles. But this was a great take on a world where they tensely coexist with humans. The history behind them is touched on, and I loved the stones' different powers and qualities. Plus, brings the humor (as seen above) that I've come to expect.

Zara was a tough, no-nonsense heroine like Cate's other leads, so I liked her off the bat. Kinda would've preferred her past experience with gargoyles to be at the start of the book; otherwise, the pace was good. Fast burn, high steam. ("I was just a dick repository at this point, and it was so fucking good, I was actually a little jealous of myself." LOL)

Enough hints dropped that you think you know what's coming, but it isn't obvious. I liked Sawyer, loved Gio (he's mine, mmmk), but Damien? Eh. He was such a douchecanoe at how he went about transforming Zara and how unapologetic he was about it, I really couldn't get into him. And if I were her, I sure would've never forgiven him. Talk about a traumatizing experience.

I'm glad we're not done with this world, because I want to hear more about the other gargoyles introduced and hopefully more about their origins.

Prefer some of Corvin’s other books. The main character in this felt pretty weak - she has some strong emotions for people she’s barely spoken to (and forgives way too easily), then spends most of the book in denial about what she wants and feels. Also makes stupid decisions throughout. She’s a total bigot, which would be fine if she actually spent some time changing her mind for valid reasons rather than just “I used to hate gargoyles but now I basically am one so I guess I’ll just stop feeling that way”. No real character or relationship development.

Stoneheart Goodness

Stoneheart by Cate Corvin and Melora Francios was a really enjoyable read! I actually haven’t read anything of Ms Corvin or Ms Francois much to Bunny’s disgust but I think she’s on to something, this team can write! It’s a RH stand-alone full of gargoyles, some nice smut and lots of action. A good back story lends itself to some unexpected twists and turns and their characters are vibrant and full of life (Gio!). And if you read the last few sentences, one could easily interpret that there may be a book 2. Great read!

This was a very interesting book. A good cop breaks her engagement to her abusive partner. They go on as n emergency call and he ends up dead, she goes in and saves the life of a baby gargoyle which turns her into a hero. A couple of months later she's at an awards ceremony with her new partner the same guy her ex accused her of messing around with. Damien is the playboy rich gargoyle who set up the awards. He asks her to come to his penthouse where they end up having sex and she awakens to find him cutting out her heart, literally. He places a ruby stoneheart in changing her into a gargoyle. By doing so hes placed her life in danger as someone has systematically wiped out the ruby gargoyles.
He brings in his close friend an onyx gargoyle warrior to her protect and train her. Her partner becomes her lover and wont be left out.
A bunch of action, a mystery and love keeps you glued to this book.

Interesting idea

I read that this is a stand alone novel but it could easily become a series. Zara's world is very interesting. Although there isn't a lot of history explaining how gargoyles were made a part of Zara's world, but it sounds like they are segregated quite a bit. I like the idea of making a gargoyle through by putting their gem hearts into a human or laying eggs (the story doesn't say if that was a joke). The symbiotic relationship was also a cool idea.

First off, I just want to say I LOVED THIS BOOK SO MUCH. It is so unique and original. I read a lot, tons actually, and I have not read anything remotely close to this book before. The story is intriguing, it pulls you in and keeps you guessing. I had no idea what to expect in this book and I loved that feeling. I'm so glad I gave this book a chance.

The men in this book are amazing, hot, and I love them. I really do. But that's not why I love this book so much. While there is romance and everything with that, that isn't the whole story. It's just a small part of it. The FMC, Zara, is a police officer and she loves her job. She loves helping people however she can, and that doesn't change despite her not being fully human anymore. Despite the changes she goes through and with her life on the line, Zara is a cop first and foremost. She's determined to figure out who wants the stoneheart in her chest. The book mainly revolves around this mystery they are trying to solve, which Order wants the ruby stoneheart in Zara's chest and why. The mystery and intrigue are compelling. As much as I loved Zara and her men, I really wanted to find out who wanted her dead. A lot of books nowadays have one of these, but not always both. This book has both. Plenty of hot moments between Zara and her men, and plenty of action and mystery as they rush to solve this case and save Zara's life.

This book is full of action, witty comments, an intriguing mystery, and lots of romantic moments with the extremely attractive men that want to protect Zara at all costs. It's an enticing mix of romance and action, and it had me hooked from the first page.

How do Gargoyles makes babies?

Alight I genuinely enjoyed the outline and story behind this book. The interaction between Sawyer and the FMC was great a descriptive and 🔥. The interaction with Damian seemed almost non existent.
They really only seriously talked like 1x after her change.
Gios interaction with the FMC was more but it still lacked background.
The storyline itself was good! I really enjoyed the story and all the different aspects that came into the story. The relationship development needed way more work. I understand fast-burn but it literally just happened their wasn’t really anything their but sex.
The epilogue left me confused. Was this a stand-alone cuz that basically just opened it up to a series based on different characters? But it left me wanting way more with the main characters. How do Gargoyles makes babies? I want all of that. I want them 5 yrs later, declaring their love.... lol.
It just left me with questions and wanting way more than I got.

Stoneheart was an enjoyable read. This book was written a bit differently than others I’ve read from this author, It took me a bit to really start to connect with the story and the characters but once I clicked with the flow and style, I really got into the story. I loved the idea of gargoyles and I really enjoyed the creative and unique twists that were added to the traditional idea of gargoyles. I wasn't too sure about the FMC at first, but by the end, she had totally won me over. She had been through a lot and dealt with it all the best way she could and we got to see a lot of growth from her. I loved Sawyer from the start and the other guys slowly proved themselves as well. I thought the characters were pretty well developed. There is a lot happening in the story, with plenty of drama, steam and action and as a standalone it ties up fairly well at the end, but definitely leaves it open for a spin off. I look forward to reading more!

I hope there is more.

I really enjoyed this spin on gargoyles and how they fit into human society!

The world was well put together. Plenty of thought put into the gargoyle lore being twined with humans. The book starts out with the two species already cohabitating for some time but does a good job of making it easy for the reader to understand. In fact, the flashback scenes weren't burdensome at all but helped educate us on the background.

The men were all plenty different. Their common denominator being that they were protective and not in a stifling way.

The epilogue makes me believe that there will be more following a secondary set of characters we meet and I really hope that is the case! This however was a stand-alone that wrapped up nicely.

Someone complained about the use of "pardner" and I thought it was cute and personal and explained in the story.

AMAZING! All I can say is that this is a new favorite! This captured my attention from start to finish. This is a must read if you like suspenseful books with a little(lot) of sexiness. Zara is a witty cop who has had a lot of pain in her past. After she has been given a great award for her bravery she is invited up to the penthouse for a special treat. There her life changes forever and she’s thrown in a high stakes situation that she never asked for. She has a choice give into her new life and have the possibility of finding love or give into her anger and sadness. But with a new life, and new start comes great danger like she has yet to face. If you like action and sexy gargoyles (plural) then pick up this book. You won’t regret it!

Decent

I like the idea behind this book and how the gargoyles have been part of society for a while prior to the fmc story. The romance was ok, a bit rushed and I didn't feel there was much chemistry between her and two of her guys, but it was still ok. My biggest problem, was the grammar; sentences were missing words, causing the pace of the story to falter because I had to guess what words were missing, and some added commas would have just made some sentences easier to read. Also, why all the unusual words? I understand not wanting to be repetitive and use the same words, but when the substituted words make me pause in my reading to look it up, that messes up the story for me.

3.5 stars for me. There were parts I really enjoyed and other parts that had me saying WTF?!? Good points - a different take on gargoyles and humans being able to be turned into the stonehearts (not quite a gargoyle but stronger than a human), Zara's relationship with Sawyer (he's the best character there), different types of gargoyles and their abilities. The not so good points - how quick Zara was to forgive Damien for turning her into a gargoyle, Damian in general as his character was bland and not overly likeable, Gio needing to be naked all of the time (didn't really drive the plot), Zara putting herself into TSTL situations DESPITE being a cop. With all of that said, I'd read another installment.

Unexpected

This book took a few chapters to get into. The formatting is uncommon, with chapters dedicated to the present and a select few dedicated to the past. Push through the first few chapters and whats going on should clear up a lot.

This book was entirely unexpected, and I loved it. The world building is good, relationships develop over time, the characters develop and the plot is not too much or too little.

RH: 1 FMC, 3 guys. Little trigger warning, but there is a large instance of someone not getting a choice to become a gargoyle (she is given a paralytic and her heart is forcibly removed) its pretty hard to read knowing she wasn’t given a choice.

I love reading books from Cate Corvin, so I was excited to read this. It has been a while since i read a gargoyle book and this one is interesting to say the least. You have Zara who has become a gargoyle. Now there are differences with these gargoyles. One is that there are full bloods and half bloods. So how does she become a gargoyle? So now we have mystery and oh yeah 3 extremely hot guys. So the heat factor is a five. Then you have some action. So if you like gargoyles and reverse harems, then you need to read this! You will not be disappointed.

Okay, so this is the first reverse harem story I've read. I'm no expert, but friends, it is so. good.
I'm not normally a huge fan of stories with police officers as the main characters--but I love this one.
I tend to lean more girls-than-guys, if you catch me, but I'd take a roll in the sack with these dudes. (Maybe not all at once... Or maybe exactly all at once? What's happening to me??)
And gargoyles. Like, sexy, living stone hotties. Who knew gargoyles could be hot? But they totally are!!
Super fun read with super hot sexy scenes.

One of the best reads

It is one of the best reads I've had for a while now. I enjoyed the flow of words and the plots. Although they are predictable, I still enjoy the journey of reading it. One thing I had complains for is probably Zara leaving every so often and being alone because it gets too much for her. I mean she could be somewhere in the house to chill or somewhere close, especially when she knows she's in danger... But to each their own. I very much enjoyed this book, thanks for the fill!

Cate Corvin has become one of my all time favorite authors very quickly. Gargoyle books are far and few between and not all of those books are good. Zara is a take no crap kind of FMC and as a cop she has seen some things in the line of duty. One night saving someone from a fire changes things for her and introduces her to a world of stone, heat, and changes. I can only hope that Cate and Melora decide to continue this on as a series. Enjoy!

I don't normally write reviews but this book made me feel like it wouldn't hurt.

I normally love everything Cate Corvin writes but I feel like this is really bad as a story.

Things that bothered me:
1) Speciesism (?) coming across similar to racism.
2) This line burns my soul: "upholstering my weapon". Umm, sorry, no. Unless she was carefully covering her gun in red velvet, no, no, no, that is not the right word.
3) The MC flip-flops a lot, which I put down to having 2 authors.

Stoneheart

Great book really loved the story line. Love the Gargoyles and how the authors have them set up with different precious stones for the different houses. Honestly loved all three of the guys Sawyer gio ,and damien ,these men were hot, hot, lucky zara. With all their different personalities they were able to have a relationship between them. Looking forward to Nolan's story and Angelique. And they rest of the hybrids story. Really a great weekend couch read!

This book flowed absolutely flawlessly. I was drawn in, from the very beginning, to a story that touches on love, heartbreak, and moving on. I loved how all the characters and relationships developed through out the book. I was honestly left wanting so much more! I hope Cate Corvin & Melora Francois jump back into this world of gargoyles not only for Zara and her guys but also for Angelique!

Wow! What a book!!! I love reading a book and that is so unique that I have never read anything like it before. The FMC is honorable, courageous and sassy. Pretty much the perfect heroine. The MC’s were all different as well but strong and honorable as well. This book was well written and I’m so glad i picked it up ❤️

This is a new take on gargoyle characters and has a very creative plot. In this world, gargoyles may be made of strong material, but they also have certain powers depending on the type of House they come from... and most of them are exceptionally sexy beings as well. Zara's life is irrevocably changed one night after saving someone from a burning building. All part of her job as a cop, but she ends up with more attention than is wanted, and her entire world is upended because of it. At least she has her hottie "pardner" still to lean on and two other mouthwatering men who rarely give her room to breathe.
The characters are dynamic, the plot unique, the steamy scenes leave you fanning yourself, and the mysteries Zara must contend with - those of her men, her future, and how to bring justice - will keep you engaged. I was excited to learn that this is part of a series, and I look forward to finding out what will happen next in the next!
