Todd does a great job of utilizing the archaeological knowledge that was on hand at the time, while also incorporating Tacitus with a critical lens. At times it was a bit dry, but had great insight into the peoples of northern Europe encompassing many facets of daily life such as types of pottery, brooches, touches upon mythology and funerary rights, and much more. Many pages are focused on the types of communities these people lived in, and the nuances between them.
