This book went in to avenues I have not thought about related to overthinking. Very interesting read as it relates clutter, abuse and toxic people surrounding you to the way your brain functions. It also explains, my lifestyle way, on how food effects the brain and why it’s important to maintain healthy eating.
This is a must read for anyone who has any questions is they might be an over thinker… however, don’t over think it, just read the book. ;)
One of my favorites that I have read this year so far! This book gave a lot of insight on things related to over thinking that I never thought of. It also goes into depth about different kinds of emotions and how to “master” them!
✨️It's basically 2 books in one. The first talks about controling you mind (mostly overthinking), and the second part talks about mastering your feelings (talked about sooo many emotions and how to control and if they need to be controlled in the first place)
🧠I love it when books like that talk about the brain. This one talks about how a healthy brain should be, and how it gets affected with various emotions and so, ans how it rewires to whatever you are going through, and how to break the vicious cycles to get back to normal
🗣The author doesn't sell the book in a way that it will solve all of your issues after reading this book. Rather, it's more like if you commit to give the methods mentioned in the book a shot, THEN you will see a difference!!
📃There is no fluff, no unnecessary paragraphs, and chapters! It gets to the point right away!
📖I enjoyed it so much that I want to own a physical copy of it to always be able to go back to it!
✍️🏻The author also has the chapters named very clearly (named after a specific emotion/feeling) that going back to it would be so easy!
I spent a lot of time with this book. I listened to the audiobook. While I do tend to overthink, and the first book was someone helpful to me, I feel that I have greatly improved in this area later in life. Where I still struggle is with my emotions. This book was spot on. Many parts of it, I felt as if I were in the room with my therapist and he was talking directly to me. I gained so much knowledge and this book was so incredibly helpful to me. I took 37 pages of notes. I rewound and rewound and listened to some chapters multiple times. I finally just bought the hard copy to keep on hand for rereading and reference. If you feel you struggle with your emotions and self regulation at all , I cannot recommend this book highly enough. I am so grateful for this information.
Interesting to hear about the link between technology/social media use and overthinking.
- limited technology/social media use, building better habits, stress reduction, positive thinking, mediation, healthy diet, exercise, minimalistic lifestyle , not hanging out with the dark triad type, etc are all mentioned for reducing overthinking.
These tips are obvious, but still good reminders. While reading, I had many “duh” moments, and most of the information wasn’t new to me. Still, the book reminded me of things that are important for my mental health and that I need to practice consistently with discipline.
Got a few things and practical tips out of it but otherwise it was very repetitive. Do you struggle with overthinking, anxiety, depression, anger etc? Here's why you shouldn't (xyz list of the negative effects). So don't do that. "Find inner enlightenment' oh was that the goal this whole time?
If you've never read a self help book before, it's maybe a decent place to start to make you aware of thought patterns but if you've already done any work it's incredibly frustrating. I lost track of how many times I rolled my eyes.
This book was recommended to me from my therapist and very grateful for it. This was not an easy read. Times I had to stop to feel emotions and let them out. Lots of retrospect on my mistakes and things I can improve on. This isn’t a guarantee on anything, but tools to master your emotions and making better decisions. After finishing, I realized just how low my emotional intelligence was and actions I need to take to better myself and be there for others around me.
Overall a great book that provides great insights into your brain and your emotions, their purpose, and the overall dangers of overthinking. Along with suggestive exercises along the way, and all the useful information, i feel i grasped a better understanding of the consequences of overthinking and how it impacts your life and brain - and how to start redirecting your brain.
Control Your Mind and Master Your Feelings by Eric Robertson ** Control Your Mind is not written by a physician, and so I did not find it very rewarding. It gave all of the arbitrary mental health help tropes that anyone would give: work out, combat intrusive thoughts, deal with your trust issues. Etc
For a while now, I’ve been on a journey to improve my mental health, and part of that journey has involved diving into various self-help books. While I appreciate the insights these books offer, I often find myself in a bit of a paradox. Many of the concepts resonate with me, and I recognize the answers to the challenges I face. However, knowing the answers doesn’t always translate into action.
This just wasn't for me. I found some of the tips in the first included book very helpful and informative but I felt like I spent more time being told I would find out more in a later chapter than actually learning anything.
As for the second included book, I couldn't even focus enough to listen to it well.
If this book helps you, that’s wonderful, but it read like someone copy and pasted from a ChatGPT google search. Telling someone to “just let it go” and “go exercise” is pretty common knowledge. I did laugh at the bit where he said “don’t multitask, just accept being scatterbrained.” Ummm, okay. There are better books about managing emotions and overthinking.
The writer has done a good wor k with some chapters. Others, however, do not have much to provide. You'll enjoy this book in some parts but the fact that it's pushing a lot of new-age material I give it the stars I have given it.
This may be a helpful book if you are an overthinker & easily worry. This book isn't particularly fun or inspiring; it's more straight to the point. Even if you're not an overthinker, there's still some good info in here.
Audiobook. I felt like someone was reading from an encyclopedia of mental disorders and emotions. Didn't really provide me with anything new or guide me on how to control or master anything. Gave vibes of, "Do you overthink? Have you tried not overthinking?"
I read about 10% of this book before I had to put it down. I was unimpressed with 1) how generic the advice was and 2) the abundant use of the word "disorder" In a culture that is so self focused, this felt like another source of media that perpetuated that focus
It’s a good book to start with but as you go through it is depressing and gives you an idea of “how to overthink about the stuff you are probably leaving behind “,
If you are really going through something harder and seeking comfort .. this is not the book to start with
The book is really impactful. It has a lot of good and practical advice. The concepts were explained in a way that's easy to understand. It's such a good read. I listened to the audiobook, and I loved the narrator's voice.
Very insightful information on how the brain works and things we can do to help better ourselves. Some things were a bit repetitive, but I’d recommend as a self-help book for someone wanting to understand the mind more!
I found portions of this book interesting, but the majority of the book was repetitive and common knowledge in my opinion. I would not read again or recommend to others.
Helpful in some of its suggestions, though a bit pedestrian in its prose, and sometimes feels like it’s overpromising in terms of its possible effects.
